"Knives Out" was an anomaly. The 2019 film was a mid-budget movie with a fantastic cast of recognizable names that nevertheless did not bank on one specific A-lister, became a huge hit with audiences and critics alike, and became a franchise organically rather than planning sequels before the first even debuted. Of course, it helps that the film had a compelling and simple premise, a great comedic tone, a director with a clear vision, and delightful characters, including the once-in-a-decade great Benoit Blanc.
Rian Johnson's murder mysteries take inspiration from Agatha Christie novels, "Columbo," and even underseen 1970s murder mysteries to deliver compelling stories that — much like Christie's work — use archetypal characters to comment on issues of today. After looking at Radiohead for inspiration for the first movie's title and The Beatles for inspiration for the title of "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery," Johnson is rounding out this trilogy by looking at U2.

Hell truly has frozen over, with a movie many of us Beatlemaniacs never thought we’d see (through legal channels) getting an official release on Disney Plus. The movie, of course, is Michael Lindsay-Hogg’s Let It Be. The film original came out theatrically in 1970 and coincided with the release of The Beatles’ final album of the same name. It followed the group as they recorded the titular album, and while it received a home video release in the 80s, it’s been buried ever since.
Rumours have always been that the surviving Beatles didn’t like how they were portrayed, with the documentary famously revealing the frayed tensions within the group that led to their split. As a fan, I thought it would stay buried, especially after the release of Peter Jackson’s epic-length Get Back, which used all the footage filmed for the Let It Be documentary and...

Sean Ono Lennon gave his thoughts on Sam Mendes’ upcoming Beatles movies while chatting with Variety’s Marc Malkin at the Oscars during Variety On the Carpet presented by Directv.
Mendes plans to make four films, with each one told from a different member’s point of view. “That’s the minimum you need to cover the epic story of The Beatles. You need four films,” Ono Lennon said.
As for who he hopes will play John Lennon, Ono Lennon had a very specific (and surprising) actor in mind.
“I’m hoping that Emma Stone might consider it because she did such a good job in ‘Poor Things.’ I think if you’re gonna reach that as an actor, the next obvious step is to really go for it and be John Lennon,” he quipped.
On a more serious note, Ono Lennon reflected on the difficulty of pulling off a...

Ernst Goldschmidt, member of the founding team of Orion Pictures and an international film executive, died Dec. 2 from heart failure in Badenweller, Germany. He was 92.
Born and raised in Badenweller, Goldschmidt started his career in entertainment working across Europe. He began as a salesman at MGM in Zurich before moving on to become general manager of the United Artists (UA) Swiss office. After spearheading operations in Germany, Goldschmidt was promoted to the position of European Sales Manager in Paris and later, President of UA Europe.
In 1975, Goldschmidt made his foray into the United States after UA relocated him to New York. It was the prime place to showcase Goldschmidt’s knowledge of the global market. Ringo Starr said he had the idea for The Beatles’ “Octopus’s Garden” after he asked for an egg dish. He only asked for the eggs because someone first offered him food that was a lot more exotic! “Octopus’s Garden” became only one of two tunes Ringo wrote for the Fab Four by himself. Both of the songs in question have something major in common.
Ringo Starr thought up The Beatles’ ‘Octopus’s Garden’ after he was feeling fed up
During a 1981 interview with Rolling Stone, Ringo discussed a fateful lunch he had. “Things were getting a bit rough, and I’d left The Beatles for a couple of weeks because I couldn’t take it anymore,” Ringo recalled. “So I went on holiday with my family to Sardinia.
“A friend lent us a boat, and one day the captain served us some octopus for lunch,” he added. “Naturally we went,...

The Beatles spent hours in recording sessions, and they had pent-up energy when they got out. They found it fun to speed around in their cars, racing and using microphones to call out to one another. While this was entertaining to the musicians, it was less so for the residents of the towns they drove through.
The Beatles raced cars through villages after recording sessions
Once John Lennon got a driver’s license, he outfitted his Rolls-Royce with oversized ashtrays, a record player, a custom horn, and a microphone system with speakers in the wheel wells. He used the microphone frequently.
“You could ask people to cross the road a bit faster which scared the daylights out of them,” Beatles associate Tony King said, per Rolling Stone.
Lennon encouraged his bandmates to race him in their cars. The Beatles did this after recording sessions, despite the fact that it was often past midnight.

The Lennon-McCartney songwriting credit appeared on Beatles albums for years, even when Paul McCartney and John Lennon primarily wrote songs alone. The partnership was an enormously successful one. They sold millions of records and, at least early in their time with The Beatles, relied wholly on one another to finish songs. They worked more independently in the latter half of the 1960s, but Lennon’s longtime friend Pete Shotton said he still liked the Lennon-McCartney credit. He was too insecure to solely have his name on a song.

The Beatles‘ The White Album is actually just called The Beatles. During an interview, Paul McCartney examined the origin of the title. In addition, John Lennon revealed what he thought of the album in retrospect.
A great artist helped come up with the official name of The Beatles’ ‘The White Album’
In the 1997 book Paul McCartney: Many Years From Now, Paul said he worked on the packaging of The White Album with artist Richard Hamilton. Hamilton is most remembered for his pop art piece Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing? The artist asked Paul a fateful question.
“Richard asked, ‘Has there been an album called The Beatles?’ so I referred back to Emi and they said, ‘No. There’s been Meet the Beatles!, Introducing… The Beatles in America, but there’d never been an album called The Beatles,'” Paul recalled. “So he said,...

Ask a hundred Beatles fans their favorite song, and you might get a hundred different answers. It’s a testament to the band’s songwriting prowess. Even their lousy songs became fan favorites and performed well on the charts. One of The Beatles’ first big hits was so good that Peter Asher called it the greatest song he had ever heard.

The Beatles received a number of Grammy awards, but in 1971, they joined a prestigious group of musicians who have won an Oscar. By the time they won, the band had already broken up, and the relationships between the former members were publicly fraught. They did not appear at the ceremony to accept the award, but the four of them are now permanently known as Oscar winners.

In 1968, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr founded Apple Corps Limited. The multimedia company handled The Beatles’ business affairs. One of the corporation’s early business ventures was the Apple Boutique, a store. It lasted six months and, according to manager Pete Shotton, Lennon and McCartney were at least partly responsible for its collapse. The way they approached the store was representative of the problems The Beatles were facing at this time.

While The Beatles are best known for their music, the band also appeared in two movies: A Hard Day’s Night and Help!. Both films are musical comedies that feature the fab four on an adventure bolstered by an excellent soundtrack. Both movies were directed by Richard Lester, who enjoyed a successful film career after directing The Beatles.

“They’re gonna put me in the movies,” Ringo Starr sang on The Ed Sullivan Show as the Beatles covered Buck Owens’ hit “Act Naturally.” The 1965 appearance featured songs from the group’s new film, Help!, director Richard Lester’s send-up of James Bond movies and other elements of spymania, as well as a follow-up to the greatest jukebox movie ever made, A Hard Day’s Night (1964). Both films put the rhythm up front. It was natural.
Prior to the nationally broadcast live performance, Starr prepared the audience by introducing himself as “all nervous and out of tune,” and smiled embarrassedly without missing or slowing a beat through his propulsive country swing. Starr was a natural performer, a locally famous beat-keeper in Liverpool before joining the Beatles, whose rhythm patterns had a character which set him apart from other drummers. John Lennon wasn’t afraid to publicly bash Beatles songs, no matter if he or Paul McCartney wrote them. The two were a dynamic songwriting duo, but Lennon sometimes called out McCartney’s Beatles songs he felt were weak. However, Lennon praised several of McCartney’s songs, showing he appreciated his songwriting partner.

Many artists are happy to sing Paul McCartney’s praises, but he has come across as rude and condescending to a few musicians. Here are three times that McCartney insulted another musician with his words.

George replied that it depended. He said some people claimed he was because he admitted liking Segovia’s guitar playing, “and they think that’s all very highbrow and musical.”
George believed he loved his guitar more than the others loved theirs. For John Lennon and Paul McCartney, songwriting was essential. Guitar playing was “a means to...

Paul McCartney always seemed to be able to create a song from thin air. Anyone who watched The Beatles: Get Back saw Macca pull the song “Get Back” out of thin air. He proved his genius as a songwriter when he wrote “Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da,” based solely on a slang phrase one of his friends uttered. When inspiration struck, Paul arranged one gentle Sgt. Pepper song without producer George Martin.
George Martin (left) and Paul McCartney | Kevin Mazur/WireImage Paul McCartney could write songs quickly
Paul once said writing songs with John Lennon was easy because they had a pleasabt back and forth relationship (at least for a while). That allowed them to work quickly. Yet Paul also wrote rapidly on his own. The supposedly wistful Get Back sessions and “Ob-la-Di, Ob-la-Da” weren’t the only examples of his songwriting prowess.
Macca wrote Let It Be opener “Two of Us” while on a date with Linda.

‘The Beatles: Get Back’ Director Peter Jackson Bests Judd Apatow, Amy Poehler For Emmy Directing Win
The Beatles: Get Back director Peter Jackson overcame formidable competition from some Hollywood heavyweights tonight to claim the Emmy for Outstanding Directing for a Documentary/Nonfiction Program.
His rivals for the honor included Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio for George Carlin’s American Dream, Amy Poehler for Lucy and Desi, W. Kamau Bell for We Need to Talk About Cosby, and Andrew Rossi for The Andy Warhol Diaries.
It was Jackson’s second win of the night at the Creative Arts Ceremony in Los Angeles, after The Beatles: Get Back won Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series.

A biopic about legendary pop siblings The Bee Gees is being spearheaded by Paramount Pictures.
The Bee Gees are set for an outbreak of their signature brand of night fever at theaters, with the story of the iconic Aussie sibling pop act set to join the recent genre surge of music biopics in the aftermath of Rami Malek's acclaimed performance as Queen's Freddie Mercury in the hit movie, Bohemian Rhapsody.
Indeed, a yet-to-be-titled biopic project centered on the 220 million-record-selling trio, The Bee Gees, will be brought about by a producer trifecta spearheaded by Paramount Pictures, reports Deadline. Paramount acquired the rights to dramatize the story from the Gibb family estate, chronicling the travails of siblings Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb from their beginnings as a rock act, career nadirs and, ultimately, their reinvention as disco kings, culminating with their culturally-ubiquitous smash hits from the soundtrack of 1977 film Saturday Night Fever.

In 1981, ITV screened a celebration of the premiere of For Your Eyes Only from the Odeon Leicester Square. I vividly recall my exclamation of surprise at spotting a familiar face in a shot of the crowded foyer – “That’s Harry Saltzman!” Yet as the programme continued and no mention was made of his presence I began to doubt myself. After all, he and his Bond movie co-producer Albert “Cubby” Broccoli had fallen out some years earlier, so it would be unlikely he’d be there; I must have been mistaken. It was some time later that I learned it had indeed been Harry, invited by Cubby upon the suggestion by one of the film’s stars, Chaim Topol, that he extend an olive branch to his old partner. It would be fair to say that the working relationship between the two men was a tempestuous one. Theirs...

Jon Bon Jovi went home Sunday night (Oct. 27) for the 11th annual New Jersey Hall of Fame induction ceremony. The rocker helped induct Southside Johnny Lyon with the honor at the Paramount Theatre in Asbury Park. Bon Jovi was reverential, telling the audience that without Southside Johnny, there wouldn’t be a Jon Bon Jovi. “I grew up on the sounds of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, but I always wanted to be an Asbury Juke,“ Bon Jovi said.
A clearly moved Lyon, who noted how he never understood why “Tonight Show” host Johnny Carson always made cracks about New Jersey, said he always felt a need to defend the state with an “axe to grind.” Said Lyon: “I wanted to prove that New Jersey was just as good as any other state.”

Creedence Clearwater Revival's performance wasn't part of the Woodstock live album or film but John Fogerty sings its praises.
Lead singers in rock groups all have good voices. John Fogerty has a sound. It's a swampy rasp that tells the history of rock and roll with every passing note. His voice he gave to a generation. "Down On the Corner" and "Up Around the Bend" were happy signposts. "Fortunate Son" and "Run through the Jungle" were working man's anthems for peace and equality. "Who’ll Stop the Rain" encapsulated the experience of a three-day summer music festival which never stops jamming. Celebrating 50 years since Creedence Clearwater Revival played at Woodstock, Fathom Events will project the new concert film John Fogerty – 50 Year Trip: Live at Red Rocks at cinemas nationwide.
The show was recorded at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado, on June 20, 2019, as part of Fogerty’s nationwide “My 50 Year Trip” tour.

An amusing fan-made animated short has surfaced that fantastically reimagines The Beatles, the original Fab Four, as The Fantastic Four.
The video comes from impressionist Stevie Riks and his version of the superhero band consists of Thingo (Ringo Starr), Invisible George (George Harrison), Johnny (John Lennon) and Mr. Fab-tastic (Paul McCartney).
If this animated series existed, I’d watch it!

The Beatles Abbey Road 50th Anniversary celebrates an end of an era, but the album marked the beginning of a new phase.
The Beatles' Abbey Road celebrated its 50th Anniversary amidst a flurry of activity. The band dropped a music video for "Here Comes the Sun." Recently unearthed audio shows the band may not have been ready to call it quits. While it is true they still had the Let It Be album to release, Abbey Road was a step forward and a clue to a new direction. It is fitting the band named the album after the studio, because the Beatles progressed quickly during recording sessions and the Abbey Road sonic staff often rushed to keep up.
The Beatles grew from album to album, musically and lyrically, as songwriters and as musicians. Their voices were freed from the confines of pop as they demolished standards one record at a time.

The Beatles' Abbey Road turns 50 and the new "Here Comes the Sun" music video shines a light on the magic studio.
The Beatles' Abbey Road 50th anniversary celebration dawns with the debut of a new "Here Comes the Sun" music video. George Harrison's song opens side 2 of the 1969 album, which was named for the studio it was recorded in. The sun at the center of the music video, which was directed by Alasdair Brotherston and Jock Mooney of Trunk Animation, was filmed in Abbey Road’s Studio Two.
Harrison wrote the song on an acoustic guitar in the garden of Eric Clapton's “Hurtwood Edge” home in Ewhurst, Surrey, which was about a half hour drive from George's "Kinfauns" home, according to his 1979 book I Me Mine. Sessions for the "Get Back" album (which became Let It Be), were tense, and Apple Corps, the Beatles' business organization,...

This week's new titles on DVD or Blu-Ray are the remake of Child's Play (reviewed), the critically lambasted three generations of Shaft, Luc Besson's latest action flick Anna, and one of the year's true sleeper hits, Danny Boyle's Yesterday. In a freak occurence a failed songwriter (Himesh Patel) wakes up to discover that The Beatles have never existed. He's the only one who remembers their music so he starts passing off their songs as his own and skyrockets to fame. Did you see it? Did you love it, loathe it, or fall somewhere inbetween (*raises own hand*)? Either way there's surely a Beatles song you couldn't ever live without, even if you had to make do with a cover version.

There's a cliche about popular bands that persists to this day: When the (usually male) members begin to pair off, romantically, with outside forces, that's when the trouble begins. Look no further than Yoko Ono and the idea that she singlehandedly broke up The Beatles after John Lennon fell for her. And while we all know now that the Jonas Brothers in 2013 was a result of a deep sibling dysfunction after years in the spotlight tethered to one another, initiated by youngest brother Nick Jonas, who wanted to break free, at the time, there were those who wondered if maybe oldest bro Kevin Jonas' marriage to wife Danielle Deleasa, whom he met while both of their families were vacationing in The Bahamas in 2007...

Daniel Johnston, who died Wednesday at 58, was one of a handful of artists whose work immediately seeps into the soul. Once you’ve heard one Daniel Johnston song, whether it’s one of his hauntingly plaintive unrequited love songs or one of his whimsical earworm bops, you will never be the same. An underground fixture for years, he practically invented Diy recording and the lo-fi aesthetic that dominates independent music and art today. Johnston reached a new level of stardom in 2005 with the release of Jeff Feuerzeig’s trailblazing documentary “The Devil and Daniel Johnston,” which IndieWire recently named the best music documentary of the 21st century.
As a longtime fan, Feuerzeig’s journey with Johnston predates his personal relationship with the late musician and artist. Feuerzeig sees in Johnston’s Diy and punk aesthetic direct parallels to the independent film boom of the 1980s, pioneered by Spike Lee, Jim Jarmusch,...

The Sound of Silence (Michael Tyburski)
What if our happiness wasn’t solely predicated on our fruitful relationships, career success, or spiritual fulfillment, but rather the sounds around us? It’s this idea that drives music theorist and self-proclaimed house tuner Peter (Peter Sarsgaard) to the point of maddening obsession in The Sound of Silence. The directorial debut of Michael Tyburski has a compelling hook as we go on this journey of aural perfection, but the follow-through leaves something to be desired. In terms of its thematic predecessors, The Conversation and Blow Out set an impossibly high bar, but even the narrative propulsion of those classics...

South Park Season 23, premiering Wednesday, September 25 at 10/9c will include the highly anticipated 300th episode.
“Apparently, our efforts to get our own show cancelled have fallen short,” series creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone said in a statement, in response to the cartoon’s Season 22 #CancelSouthPark campaign.
“Luckily, we love Comedy Central and [network president] Kent [Alterman] and our staff, so we are looking forward to new cancellation opportunities in the next few years.”

Welcome to this week’s Nxt review, right here on Nerdly. I’m Nathan Favel and we have Cat Stevens breaking the morning, because he wasn’t careful and he dropped it like an idiot. We’re close to Nxt moving to the USA Network, which is a momentous occasion that will quickly be eclipsed by the debut of Vince McMahon’s newest competitor, All Elite Wrestling. I like Nxt, but this is still just Triple H’s audition for running the WWE after Vince dies, so I can’t get half as enthused about this as I would like. Anyway, Elton John is stuck in a sky Lucy and her damn diamonds, so let’s go get a ladder to get her down while we review Nxt.

Producer Giles Martin has remixed The Beatles’ song “Oh! Darling” ahead of the 50th anniversary of the band’s 1969 album Abbey Road. Martin, the son of late Beatles producer George Martin, created the new 2019 mix of the track for the forthcoming deluxe reissues Abbey Road, set be released September 27th via Apple Corps Ltd./Capitol/UMe.
The record label has also shared a second version of “Oh! Darling,” this one a previously unreleased “Take 4” version of the song. The take, from the band’s Abbey Road sessions, includes an overdubbed Hammond organ from Billy Preston.

“Blinded by the Light” opened on August 16, and it lands in an interesting position. Following “Yesterday,” it’s the second film of the summer centering on a young British man of South Asian descent whose life is transformed by the music of a legendary artist. In that case it was The Beatles. In this case it’s Bruce Springsteen. So what do critics think of this latest variation on the theme?
Of course, the films take quite different approaches to the artists that inspired them. “Yesterday” was a speculative film that imagined a world where only one man on Earth remembered the songs of the Beatles, while “Blinded” is a coming-of-age story about a teenager (Viveik Kalra) who just really loves Bruce Springsteen. And the reviews are quite divergent as well. As of this writing “Blinded” has a MetaCritic score of 71 based on 42 reviews counted thus far — 34 positive, 7 mixed, and only 1 negative.

Exclusive: Currently in theaters with the Ron Howard-directed documentary Pavarotti, Imagine Documentaries has formed an exclusive partnership with the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation to create a definitive feature documentary on the beloved and iconic jazz musician and entertainer. Imagine Documentaries President Justin Wilkes forged a deal that brings access to hundreds of hours of audio recordings, film footage, photographs, personal diaries and a life’s worth of memorabilia for exclusive use in the first significant documentary dedicated entirely to his life. In addition to Louis’ prolific music and film career, Louis was an avid biographer and kept an almost daily audio diary from the early 1950’s until the day he passed in 1971. He did it all on reel-to-reel tape recordings and all organized meticulously “for posterity” by “Pops” himself.
“I find it difficult to imagine a voice more globally recognized than that of Louis Armstrong,” Wilkes said. “And yet,...
