So many actors have their beginnings on the stage, doing routines that might seem cringe but are 100% part of who they are: a pre-teen Ryan Gosling with those retro dance moves and Mc Hammer pants, Rodney Alcala smoothly winning over the ladies on The Dating Game and – Ok, maybe that second one doesn’t quite qualify. But here’s another that does: Alan Ritchson on American Idol. That’s right, the star of Reacher once tried to make it big by wooing Paula Abdul.
While Alan Ritchson moved onto Hollywood during the third season of American Idol, he was ultimately cut, with the eventual winner being Fantasia Barrino, who we should note is not a small screen action hero. Ritchson’s standout moment came when he stunned judge Paula Abdul just by being in the room, bringing a smile to her face. He would subsequently personally serenade her with Stevie Wonder...

Why Mark Harmon and the Woman He Chose on ‘The Dating Game’ Stopped Dating: ‘She Was a Bird Trainer’
NCIS star Mark Harmon married his wife, Pam Dawber, nearly 40 years ago. But before he met her in 1986, he had trouble finding the great love of his life. While in college, Harmon tried his luck on The Dating Game twice, and he left the show with a woman he met. Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t last. Here’s what Harmon said about it.
Mark Harmon and the women he met on ‘The Dating Game’ didn’t last long
Before Mark Harmon was married, the NCIS star was a contestant on The Dating Game twice in college. The Dating Game aired from 1965 to 1986, and it first involved Harmon sitting next to two other bachelors hidden from the view of the bachelorette star. The bachelorette asked questions to the hidden men, and she chose the winner. She didn’t choose Harmon, but he later starred in the show as the bachelor choosing...

It seems as though the past few years have brought a resurgence of game shows, which were once a staple of both daytime and primetime television viewing. As a kid, I relished snow days and sick days when I could miss school and curl up on the sofa to watch all my favorites – “Pyramid,” “Family Feud” and “Password” were just a few. Every day after school I rushed through my homework so that I’d have time to watch “Tattletales” and “Tic Tac Dough.”
Game shows go all the way back to the days of radio, with one such program becoming the first game show to air on broadcast television – “Truth or Consequences” debuted on July 1, 1941, and before long the genre became a popular form of entertainment. All “Big Three” networks carried a variety of game shows on both daytime and primetime schedules until their popularity began to fizzle in the ’80s and ’90s.

Chuck Barris, who hosted such gleefully trashy TV hits as The Gong Show and The $1.98 Beauty Show back in the 1970s, was an interesting man, to say the least. He once worked on American Bandstand. He wrote a song that made the Top 5 during the peak of Beatlemania. He created The Dating Game and The Newlywed Game in the ’60s. And the rumor, of course, was that Barris had been a CIA assassin at various times in different parts of the world. That claim was part of his autobiography, Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which George Clooney turned into a movie in 2002. Though Barris was still alive at the time (he died in 2017 at the age of 87), Clooney told us he never asked Barris whether the CIA claims were true. Queer reality dating shows, unfortunately, have been few and far between. The genre has existed since the first reality dating show, The Dating Game, debuted in December 1965. ABC had a monopoly on the format for a long time with The Bachelor and The Bachelorette, and the genre has continued to grow at a relentless pace as networks and streaming services jump on the dating show bandwagon (Netflix alone has enough dating shows to air year-round). But the majority of these series only center the dating lives of straight, cisgender people. Why? The queer dating shows are so much better. I don’t say this just because I’m queer. I’ve had to watch reality dating shows for work for years, much to my chagrin most of the time. The genre is just not my thing (nor is reality TV in general), but I’ve been known to enjoy some of these formats.

Netflix has acquired the rights to “His Three Daughters,” a drama from director Azazel Jacobs that premiered last month at the Toronto International Film Festival, the streamer announced Monday.
The film stars Natasha Lyonne, Carrie Coon and Elizabeth Olsen as a trio of estranged sisters who try to maintain their frayed relationship while taking care of their dying father in his small apartment.
The three actors are also executive producers on the film alongside Maya Rudolph, Danielle Renfrew Behrens, Peter Friedland, Neil Shah and Sophia Lin. Jacobs produces alongside Alex Orlovsky, Duncan Montgomery, Lia Buman, Marc Marrie, Mal Ward, Matt Aselton, Tim Headington, Jack Selby and Diaz Jacobs.
“His Three Daughters” is the third Netflix acquisition from this year’s TIFF. Previously, the streamer acquired Richard Linklater’s “Hit Man” for $20 million and Anna Kendrick directorial debut “Woman of the Hour” for $10 million.

Exclusive: In its fourth deal for films that played last month’s Toronto Film Festival, Netflix has acquired His Three Daughters for just under $7 million, sources said. Scripted, directed and edited by Azazel Jacobs, the film stars Natasha Lyonne, Elizabeth Olsen and Carrie Coon.
CAA Media Finance brokered the deal for worldwide rights.
This marks the fourth major deal for a Toronto title by Netflix, which paid around $20 million for the Richard Linklater-directed Hit Man with Glen Powell and Adria Arjona and north of $10 million for the Anna Kendrick-directed Woman of the Hour, a drama inspired by the true story of a contestant on TV’s The Dating Game who won a date with a serial killer who turned creepier and creepier as the date approached. It also picked up Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa, a documentary about the first Nepali woman to completely summit and survive Mount Everest.

Across sexualities and gender spectrums, any modern-day single who desires romance and companionship will likely agree that dating is a shit show. As we’ve become more connected as a society, the expectations around it are increasingly fractured. Adults, especially those living in large metropolises, typically have jampacked schedules, making it challenging to find time for those who aren’t already close friends, loved ones or colleagues. Moreover, people possess varied desires and expectations, which can make things increasingly uncomfortable when trying to find a match. While dating websites gloat about offering endless options, predators, misogynists and everyone in between often use those platforms to prey on unsuspecting victims. Finding love can be a terrifying endeavor.

Netflix spent big at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, picking up Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut “Woman of the Hour” for $11 million and Richard Linklater’s well-reviewed “Hit Man” for $20 million. But other than that and despite an unusually numerous 50 titles for sale, the TIFF market at large was muted.
The lack of activity was in sync with the festival season for 2023 so far, as Sundance and Cannes went off with a smattering of deals compared to years past.
“In this marketplace, the studios and streamers, aside from Netflix, would rather spend big bucks on one or two movies that they are passionate about versus spending a boatload of money to fill a slate or clog up the pipeline with regular content,” a high-level distribution executive told TheWrap who declined to be named.

Plot: The true story of an actress (Anna Kendrick) who, in the seventies, went on The Dating Game and was matched with Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto), who was later revealed to be a serial killer that may have murdered up to 130 women.
Review: The story behind Woman of the Hour is pretty wild, even as far as true crime goes. While the movie takes several significant liberties with her story, a young actress named Cheryl Bradshaw really did go on The Dating Game in 1978 and chose serial killer Rodney Alcala as her match. While the premise is thin, as there wasn’t much to Bradshaw’s interactions with Alcala beyond the show, Anna Kendrick, who makes her directorial debut from a Black List script by Ian MacAllister McDonald, has put together a chilling film.

This year's Toronto International Film Festival was filled with actors turned directors, which is always a big gamble. Not every actor-filmmaker is a Jordan Peele or a Clint Eastwood, and just because you spend a lot of time on set watching the director and the crew do their job doesn't mean you have a vision. Interestingly enough, the best and most confidently made of these movies at the festival was not some prestige drama, but "Woman of the Hour," a thriller and the directorial debut of Anna Kendrick.
Even if the script suffers from some issues — mostly framing and structure — Kendrick has a clear vision for the film, a terrifying stranger-than-fiction retelling of the time a serial rapist and killer went on national TV and participated in a dating show. With some interesting visuals, tense set pieces, and fantastic performances by Kendrick and Daniel Zovatto, who plays the killer, Rodney Alcala,...

Fresh out of its world premiere at TIFF, the Anna Kendrick-directed thriller Woman of the Hour has been sold to Netflix for a staggering eight figures, Variety reports this week.
Variety details, “The streamer is paying in the $11 million range for the ripped-from-the-headlines thriller, making it the first major sale of the festival. The deal covers the U.S. and several international territories including France, Italy, Japan and South Korea.”
Meagan Navarro explains in her four-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Anna Kendrick takes aim at the true crime serial killer story in her feature directorial debut, Woman of the Hour. A charming, kitschy ’70s set exploration of gender dynamics quickly gives way to an unnerving, suspenseful stranger-than-fiction tale of serial killer and rapist Rodney Alcala and his bizarre appearance as a bachelor on “The Dating Game.” Kendrick’s incisive vision, blending horror and humor with nonlinear storytelling, makes for an unshakable debut.

Last year, Anna Kendrick starred in Mary Nighy’s disquieting drama of abuse Alice, Darling. The actress played a woman undone by her partner’s psychological manipulations, pulling from her own experiences in an abusive relationship to shape the character. Her performance — sensitive, gripping — sustained the film’s atmosphere of dread.
In Woman of the Hour, Kendrick builds on the work she started in Alice, Darling — but now she is also behind the camera for this unnerving dramatization of serial killer Rodney Alcala’s appearance on a dating game show while in the midst of his murder spree. Woman of the Hour, which premiered at TIFF before its Netflix acquisition, is an ambitious attempt to subvert true-crime genre expectations by giving voice to the survivors and victims of Alcala’s rampage.

Toronto — When the crowd settles in, the lights go down and the movie starts, this year’s Toronto International Film Festival is more or less business as usual.
The rest of the time, not so much.
This is a TIFF with fewer stars, fewer studio movies and more films up for sale but fewer buyers willing to commit during the writers’ and actors’ strikes. That’s a distinctly different beast from the TIFF that would normally host a parade of movie stars on an array of red carpets every day, particularly during the opening weekend that concludes on Sunday.
And yet, this year’s festival has had a familiar assortment of potential awards movies, crowd-pleasers, bold indies, star vehicles, international projects and weirdo midnight romps. And in the theaters when those movies play, the number of movie stars in the seats can be beside the point for at least a couple of hours.

The Toronto International Film Festival has more films for sale than ever this year; a whopping 50 features are trying to make acquisition deals. But sales have been brought to a crawl thus far due largely to the uncertainty brought by Hollywood’s double strike, agents told TheWrap.
“It’s really a frustrating Toronto,” said one top sales agent, who screened a competition film this weekend for industry buyers. “There are too many films, the studios are slow and there’s too much uncertainty because of the strike.”
Two films were in play for a sale, according to one studio insider: Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” a drama about a serial killer who was on “The Dating Game” in the 1970s; and “His Three Daughters,” starring Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne and Carrie Coon as three sisters who come together to prepare for a family death.

Almost every woman has a story: A stranger who followed her through a parking garage. A cab driver who asked uncomfortably personal questions. A date who became frighteningly obsessive. A friend who wouldn’t take no for an answer. The frightening banality of these events is the engine that drives “Woman of the Hour,” the directorial debut from actress Anna Kendrick.
Based on the true story of serial killer Rodney Alcala — who was convicted in 1980 for the murders of seven women and girls, but is suspected of killing more than 100 — “Woman of the Hour” is a more mainstream study of the tension between heterosexual desire and implied violence also evoked in Jane Campion’s “In the Cut.” Unlike that film, however, “Woman of the Hour” leaves the erotics of this dilemma unexplored from the female point of view. The women in this film are not trying to square their attraction...

The logline of a serial killer and rapist taking part in a television dating game show sounds like a high-concept pitch so fabricated it couldn’t possibly be founded in any veracity. Yet, in 1979, Rodney Alcala––whose victims are believed to be as many as 130––was a bachelor on The Dating Game. For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick expands the 30 minutes of airtime into an inquiry of misogyny and the everyday silencing of women, exploring both Alcala’s shocking murders and the story of a fledging actress hoping for a big break. With a careful threading of humor and horror, it’s an ambitious, slightly strained gamble that Kendrick mostly manages with a formally precise vision and script that doesn’t rely on platitudes.

Game shows have become a weird new sub-genre at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, with Anna Kendrick telling the somewhat true story of a serial killer who appeared on “The Dating Game” in “Woman of the Hour” and the documentary “The Contestant” detailing a truly bizarre Japanese reality show that required its player to live naked in a room for more than a year winning prizes in order to survive.
And because it takes three to make a trend, Saturday night at TIFF brought Jessica Yu’s “Quiz Lady,” a spirited if slight comedy starring Awkwafina and Sandra Oh as mismatched sisters whose fate is bound up in a nightly game show called “Can’t Stop the Quiz.” Both actresses try hard to keep this energetic concoction afloat, although the future of this Disney/20th Century property seems healthier on a streaming outlet than in theaters. Due to the SAG-AFTRA strike, Anna Kendrick couldn’t make it to Friday’s TIFF world premiere of her feature directorial debut, Woman of the Hour.
The film did not have a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement. Kendrick also stars in the movie, which follows Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto), a killer in the midst of a killing spree when he brazenly took part and won a date on the popular TV game show The Dating Game. In the pic, Kendrick plays bachelorette Cheryl Bradshaw, who appears on the dating show.
The producers read the following statement from the Oscar nominee before the start of the pic:
“[This] film festival has proven time and time again that it is an artist-driven festival, and it has been my absolute honor to have TIFF as part of my career for the last 14 years,” read Kendrick’s statement.

Actor makes directorial debut with the frightening fact-based tale of a woman on a 1970s dating show who meets a serial killer
At last year’s Toronto film festival, Anna Kendrick played a woman crumbling within an emotionally abusive relationship in Alice, Darling, an unsettling psychodrama that proved revelatory for the star, typically associated with lighter fare. At the time she spoke about her uncomfortable connection to the material, having once been at the mercy of a controlling, noxious boyfriend, and there’s a similarly specific unease to her follow-up, the fact-based thriller Woman of the Hour, a film also focused on how the oppressiveness of gender dynamics can lead to horror.
This time, the horror is of a more tangible and gruesome kind, shown to us in short sharp bursts, flashbacks to the killings of Rodney Alcala, a charming photographer who preyed on women and young girls in the 1970s.

Had things gone according to plan, Anna Kendrick would be attending the Toronto International Film Festival in support of her directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour”, which is making its world premiere at the film fest.
However, because Kendrick is a proud member of SAG-AFTRA, she’s abiding by strike regulations prohibiting union members from promoting their projects.
“I am heartbroken to not be with you all in this moment.”
As People reported, prior to the film’s premiere screening at TIFF, the audience was read a special message from Kendrick.
“[This] film festival has proven time and time again that it is an artist-driven festival, and it has been my absolute honour to have TIFF as part of my career for the last 14 years,” Kendrick said in the statement, which was read by one of the movie’s producers.

For her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick chose a particularly daunting task in tackling the story of the notorious serial killer Rodney Alcala, who staged a terrifying murder spree in the ’70s in which he is thought to have killed upwards of 130 people. The center of Kendrick’s movie, Woman of the Hour, focuses on his appearance in plain sight on a 1978 episode of ABC’s The Dating Game, in which he was the bachelor that contestant Cheryl Bradshaw wound up choosing to go on a date with, not knowing that this was a period in the middle of his murderous spree.
ABC’s 20/20 devoted a full hour in May 2021 to the story of the cold-blooded killer who died in incarceration, but Kendrick’s film version has more on its mind that just the facts. It had its world premiere Friday as a Special Presentation at the Toronto Film Festival.

Anna Kendrick’s directorial debut, “Woman of the Hour,” is one of the trickiest balancing acts at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival. You could call the film, which premiered Friday at the Princess of Wales Theatre, a black comedy — but that term usually suggests a seriocomic tone running through the film.
“Woman of the Hour,” by contrast, is humorous sometimes and not funny at all at others. It can be amusing when portraying kitschy ’70s pop culture shot through with casual sexism, but it is simply horrifying when sexism turns to rape and murder.
It’s the kind of tonal schizophrenia that would be a challenge for an experienced director to pull off, but first-timer Kendrick manages to make her film both weirdly entertaining and thoroughly disturbing.
The premise itself is completely bizarre, not least because it’s true. In 1978, serial killer Rodney Alcala was a contestant on “The Dating Game,...

“Access Hollywood” executive producer Mauren Fitzpatrick will be leaving the show after four years, two individuals with knowledge told TheWrap.
Fitzpatrick began helming the NBC entertainment newsmagazine franchise in 2019, taking over running both the taped show and “Access Live” as longtime EP Rob Silverstein exited after 20 years in the position.
Fitzpatrick’s departure follows the exit of production executive Justin Batey, who served as senior executive in charge of production.
Fitzpatrick and Batey’s reasons for the exiting NBCUniversal are unknown at this time. An NBCU representative declined to comment for this article. We were unable to reach Fitzpatrick and Batey for comment.
First joining the franchise as a consultant in early 2018, Fitzpatrick helped develop several concepts and pilots for NBCUniversal’s syndication division, including overseeing development and pilot production for syndicated series “Judge Jerry” and managing development and production for Oxygen’s “Crime Time” pilot.

Chicago – When a smart and ambitious California girl moves from her “one horse town” to early 1970s Los Angeles, what better way to break into the show business than being an NBC-tv Studio Page for “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” and other programs of the era. Author Shelley Herman tells “My Peacock Tale.”
Ms. Herman recalls the almost impossible-to-imagine situations behind the scenes amidst a “who’s who” of 1970s entertainment culture. From a trip to see Elvis in Las Vegas that led to Shelley getting into the NBC-tv Page program to literally “breaking a leg” in an encounter that brought her an indelible moment with a musical hero, she also had an insider’s perspective on the historic feud between Joan Rivers and Johnny Carson (when Rivers left her “Tonight Show” gig for her own talk show). “My Peacock Tale” tells all in the interpersonal, professional, and emotional...

Often referred to as The Dating Game Killer because of his appearance on The Dating Game in 1978, Rodney Alcala is arguably one of the most well-known serial killers in recent history. Alcala was responsible for at least eight murders that occurred between the late 1960s and the late 1970s. In addition to the murders he was convicted of, it is believed that he possibly murdered dozens of other women. After being arrested in 1979, Rodney was sentenced to death. However, he would never be executed as he passed away in July 2021 as the result of natural causes. As

Rodney Alcala, the serial killer known as “The Dating Game Killer” after he appeared on the popular game show in 1978 amid his killing spree, has died at the age of 77.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation announced that Alcala died early Saturday morning at a hospital near Corcoran, California; at the time of his death, Alcala was awaiting execution following his conviction in the 1979 murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe.
“That judgment was reversed in 1984 by the California Supreme Court and Alcala was granted a new trial,” the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation added.

Rodney Alcala, the serial murderer who became known as the “Dating Game Killer” because of his 1978 appearance on the game show, died July 24 at a hospital near California’s Corcoran state prison at the age of 77.
Alcala’s chilling story provided an early glimpse of how the growth of unscripted television with everyday people would inevitably have a dark side. He appeared on the 1970s syndicated series, but the “bachelorette” that he chose wound up refusing to go out with him, telling producers after the taping that she got “weird vibes coming off him,” according to ABC News.

Rodney James Alcala, the so-called “Dating Game Killer” who was on California’s death row from Orange County, died of natural causes at 1:43 a.m. on July 24, 2021 at a hospital in the community.
In 1968, Alcala was a contestant on the game show The Dating Game. Host Jim Lange introduced him as a “successful photographer who got his start when his father found him in the darkroom at the age of 13, fully developed. Between takes you might find him skydiving or motorcycling.”
He won the competition, but his “date” refused to go out with him because she found him “creepy.”

In 1986, he was sentenced to death a second time for the Samsoe murder.

Before the days of careful vetting and extensive background checks, Rodney Alcala appeared on The Dating Game in the middle of his killing spree in the late '70s. While Alcala became known as the Dating Game killer, his involvement in the reality TV show was but a brief moment in his deadly history. Investigators believe that he killed at least eight people and some suspect that he murdered more than 100 others. In a recent special, 20/20 took on Alcala's terrifying story, which has often been compared to Ted Bundy's.
