Dean Smith, who won a gold medal as a sprinter at the 1952 Helsinki Olympics before becoming a top-notch Hollywood stunt performer who worked on a dozen films starring John Wayne, has died. He was 91.
Smith died Saturday at his home in Breckenridge, Texas, after a battle with cancer, his friend Rob Word told The Hollywood Reporter.
Smith, who got into the business with help from James Garner, appeared in seven Paul Newman films, including Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid (1969), The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean (1972), The Sting (1973) and The Towering Inferno (1974).
The tough Texan, who loved to say he could “ride, run and jump,” doubled for good friend Dale Robertson on the 1957-62 NBC series Tales of Wells Fargo, the 1964 film Blood on the Arrow and the 1966-68 ABC series Iron Horse.

Actors John Wayne and Kirk Douglas had their fair share of disagreements over the course of their careers. However, that didn’t stop them from working together a few times. They represented entirely different political ideologies, which caused many of their fans to believe that they must have hated one another. Douglas once spoke about the respect that he had for Wayne, which was reciprocated by the Western movie star.

Hollywood’s last big all-star war epic in Black & White? Otto Preminger took a happy film company to Hawaii for this enormous saga about the Naval push in the Pacific Theater of WW2, with none other than John Wayne as the competent commander leading the charge. Soap-opera scenes aside, it’s a thrilling epic directed with Preminger’s well-known reserve. The star-gazing isn’t bad either — Kirk Douglas! Patricia Neal! Henry Fonda! Paula Prentiss! The finish is a huge naval battle with impressive live-action special effects, and given a moody music score by Jerry Goldsmith.

“Two smoldering women made all the danger worthwhile!”… heck, we didn’t even see ’em catch fire. John Wayne is charismatic and Andrew V. McLaglen’s direction is decent for once in this formulaic ‘easy listening’ pot-boiler from the Wayne school of laid-back ’60s entertainment. After winning the Vietnam War, our intrepid action man extinguishes 101 out-of-control oil fires, which appear to happen every twenty minutes. When nothing’s burning, there are plenty of domestic tangles to straighten out with the womenfolk. In support are Katharine Ross, Jim Hutton, Vera Miles, Bruce Cabot and Jay C. Flippen. It’s old-fashioned but not embarrassing — Wayne still has his charm.

Prolific producer Mark Gordon is setting sail with a new production company, Mark Gordon Pictures.
The venture is backed by Entertainment One, where Gordon served as president until July 2019 in the wake of friction with the group. He then transitioned to a development and production deal with the company, which has since been acquired by toy giant Hasbro. The Mark Gordon Company was fully acquired by eOne in 2018, three years after eOne took a majority stake in the company.

In a virtual press conference for his new film Greyhound, Tom Hanks admitted that he finds most movies concerning the U.S. Navy to be woefully inaccurate.
Part of the inaccuracy, he says, has to do with the technology available. In the 1950s, for instance, this tech “could only do so much just by the relatively primitive aspects of filmmaking techniques.” Movies like Run Silent, Run Deep, The Enemy Below and even In Harm’s Way, the actor concedes, boasted “really great characters,” but lacked a proper understanding of “Naval strategy.” The behavior of these supposed marines, Hanks joked, seemed like it was pulled straight out of Star Trek rather than from studies of actual naval operations.
“I must say, a film buff, and as a guy who reads and pursues history for pleasure, Navy films almost always disappointed me. Because in the 1950s, the technology in order to show them — like Run Silent,...

"I think someone here knows where the Americans are." Signature Entertainment has debuted an official UK trailer for a Chinese drama titled The Hidden Soldier, about an American WWII pilot who survived in rural China. The film has also gone under other international titles including In Harm's Way and The Chinese Widow, but will be released in the UK under that The Hidden Soldier titled. Emile Hirsch stars as Jack, the pilot who survives a crash landing in rural China. A young Chinese woman, played by Liu Yifei (who is starring in the upcoming Mulan movie) takes him in to her home and, of course, falls in love with him while keeping him alive and hidden from the Japanese military. This looks as cliche as it sounds, with all the usual romance and war tropes worked into it. Worth a watch only if you really love wartime romance. Here's the...

Submarine movie evening: Underwater war waged in TCM's Memorial Day films In the U.S., Turner Classic Movies has gone all red, white, and blue this 2017 Memorial Day weekend, presenting a few dozen Hollywood movies set during some of the numerous wars in which the U.S. has been involved around the globe during the last century or so. On Memorial Day proper, TCM is offering a submarine movie evening. More on that further below. But first it's good to remember that although war has, to put it mildly, serious consequences for all involved, it can be particularly brutal on civilians – whether male or female; young or old; saintly or devilish; no matter the nationality, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, or any other label used in order to, figuratively or literally, split apart human beings. Just this past Sunday, the Pentagon chief announced that civilian deaths should be anticipated as “a...

George Kennedy has died, the actor passing away yesterday at the age of 91 according to a Facebook post from his grandson Cory Schenkel.
Kennedy mostly played gruff characters in various genres. He appeared in all four of the 1970s "Airport" films, he's known to a whole generation as Frank Drebin's boss Ed in "The Naked Gun" films, and he won an Oscar for co-starring with Paul Newman in "Cool Hand Luke".
Other notable film credits include the original "The Flight of the Phoenix" and the war time classic "The Dirty Dozen," the disaster epic "Earthquake," the Clint Eastwood mountain climbing spy thriller "The Eiger Sanction," westerns such as "Bandolero" and "The Sons of Katie Elder", the all-star Agatha Christie adaptation "Death on the Nile," Otto Preminger's post-Pearl Harbor tale "In Harm's Way," and Michael Ciminio's "Thunderbolt and Lightfoot".

The Legend Of Korra needs to pick up the pace this week. Here's Kaci's review...
Review
This review contains spoilers.
3.4 In Harm's Way 3.5 The Metal Clan
The first half of this week's new episodes of The Legend Of Korra is something of a disappointment. I hate to say it, especially after praising the pacing of last week's opening three episodes, but this one really felt like it dragged on forever. There's really only an "A" story to work with, with the "B" story such as it is being more of a runner than a storyline in its own right; and the A story is pretty simple: Team Avatar & Friends rescue the airbenders from the Earth Queen's clutches. Meanwhile, Zaheer and his crew break the final member of their group out of prison. That's it. That's all that happens, and it takes an entire episode to tell. The pacing is practically glacial,...

Actor renowned as the machiavellian oilman Jr Ewing in Dallas
On 21 November 1980, 83 million people in the Us and 24 million in the UK watched the TV show Dallas to see who had shot the villainous Jr Ewing. While working late at the office, the boss of Ewing Oil was suddenly fired on by an unseen assailant. Who shot Jr, and would he survive?
Any character who had ever come into contact with the oleaginous Texas oilman had good reason to do away with him, but there was no way he could really have been killed off. If Jr had died, then the series would have died, because Jr was Dallas – and Larry Hagman, who has died aged 81 after suffering from throat cancer, was Jr.
Other actors were at times replaced in their roles, but Hagman was irreplaceable. Nevertheless, just in case, Hagman quickly renegotiated his contract with Lorimar Studios just after...

Actor Larry Hagman, immortalized for his performance as the legendary villain J.R. Ewing in the TV show Dallas, has died from throat cancer. He was 81 years old and had been actively acting until recently, when he appeared in the reboot of the famous TV series. The last few years had been difficult ones for Hagman. Not only did he have to battle cancer but also had to contend with his wife Maj's affliction from Alzheimer's Disease. Hagman was a working character actor when he was cast as the male lead in the 1965 sitcom I Dream of Jeannie opposite Barbara Eden. The show's success helped launch him to star status and he appeared in dozens of TV series and feature films. However, it was his portrayal of lovable cad J.R. Ewing in the 1981 CBS hit Dallas that elevated him to the status of a TV icon. The show ran...

Actor best known for her roles in Exodus and the Broadway musical Cabaret
The producer-director Otto Preminger had an eye for blue-eyed blondes, casting two complete unknowns, the 19-year-old Jean Seberg in Saint Joan (1957) and the 15-year-old Jill Haworth in Exodus (1960), with mixed results. In Preminger's rambling, all-things-to-all-people saga about the birth of Israel, Haworth, who has died aged 65, played Karen Hansen, a young Danish-Jewish girl searching for her father, from whom she was separated during the second world war. She falls in love with a radical Zionist (Sal Mineo), but is killed during a raid and buried in the same grave as an Arab, a symbol of reconciliation between the two peoples. Despite a phoney accent and the fact that she had never acted previously, Haworth was cute and touching in the significant role.

Haworth as Sally Bowles in the Broadway production of Cabaret
By Tom Lisanti
Over the past year, a number of 60s personalities have died, but the one that has most saddened me is Jill Haworth who died in her sleep earlier this week. She was one of my most favorite interviews, as she graciously invited me into her home in 1999. She was just so saucy and honest, holding nothing back. What makes it even sadder for me is that I am reading the new entertaining Sal Mineo bio by Michael Gregg Machaud and Jill is quoted extensively throughout as she had a long romance with the actor.
Petite blonde Jill Haworth made three movies while under personal contract to Otto Preminger--Exodus (where she received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Female Newcomer), The Cardinal, In Harm's Way--before going freelance. After starring in the British horror movie It!

Eva Marie Saint, Jill Haworth in Otto Preminger's Exodus Actress Jill Haworth, who was seen in a handful of movies and television shows since 1960 but who was best known as Broadway's original Sally Bowles in Cabaret, died Monday, Jan. 3, of "natural causes" at her home in Manhattan. The British-born actress was 65. Among Haworth's film appearances are three minor roles for Otto Preminger: Exodus (1960), as Sal Mineo's girlfriend; The Cardinal (1963); and In Harm's Way (1965). Haworth had larger roles in a few other movies, but those were minor fare. Among them were B-horror flicks such as It! (1967), a retelling of the Golem tale co-starring Roddy McDowall; The Haunted House of Horror (1969), opposite former teen idol Frankie Avalon and veteran Dennis Price; and Tower of Evil / Horror on Snape Island (1974), with Bryant Haliday. Considering some of the reviews the inexperienced Haworth received, her Sally Bowles [...]...

Today marks the anniversary of the December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor- which launched the United States into WWII. Fortunately, it's a better world today than it was then and the USA has excellent relations with our former WWII adversaries. However, we should stop and think about the sacrifices made on that "Day That Will Live in Infamy". Some of those veterans are still with us and deserve our respect. Since anyone reading this is a movie lover, maybe today is good day to watch a great movie that commemorates the attack on Pearl Harbor: Tora! Tora! Tora!, From Here to Eternity and In Harm's Way lead the pack.

Some sad news to report today; classical actress Patricia Neal has passed, losing her battle with lung cancer. While perhaps not the best-known actress of the 50's or 60's, Neal provided some great performances, winning an Oscar for her role in Hud. She certainly led an interesting life, being linked with many famous names. Early in her career, she was romantically connected with Gary Cooper while working on The Fountainhead and later on married author Roald Dahl. In the mid-60's she suffered a series of debilitating strokes from which she eventually made a full recovery. After that ordeal, Neal became an advocate for stroke rehabilitation. While I won't pretend to be an expert on Neal's filmography, of the films I have seen, she's been great. There's a world-weary quality to her some of her performances that is rare from actresses of her era. Some of her other more notable...

During her lifetime, she lived through many dramatic episodes including being the lover of the married Gary Cooper. She also overcame a severe stroke that threatened to sideline her career permanently, but she made a stunning comeback. Patricia Neal, the Oscar-winning actress whose life off-screen contained as much drama, tragedy, and inspiration as any of her film or theater roles, died Sunday at her home in Martha's Vineyard of lung cancer; she was 84.
An Oscar, Tony and Golden Globe winner, Neal was just as well-known for the trials, tribulations and triumphs she lived through, including a nervous breakdown, the death of one of her children, and a series of strokes that left her in a three-week coma while pregnant at the age of 39. Her subsequent rehabilitation, with the help of her then-husband, author Roald Dahl, led to yet another chapter of her acting career, as well as her pioneering for the cause of stroke rehabilitation.
Born Patsy Louise Neal in Packard, Kentucky in 1926, Neal grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and studied acting at Northwestern University before heading to New York, where she began her long and illustrious stage career, winning a Tony Award in 1946 for Lillian Hellman's Another Part of the Forest, which attracted the attention of Hollywood. Though she filmed the comedy John Loves Mary first in 1949 -- a film in which she played the Mary to future President Ronald Reagan's John -- it was the second film she made that year which introduced her to audiences with a huge splash: the highly-anticipated adaptation of Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead, where she played conflicted, imperious heroine Dominique Francon opposite Gary Cooper's stalwart architect Howard Roark, already a famed character thanks to the success of Rand's novel. Though actress Barbara Stanwyck championed the project to Warner Bros., the studio ultimately cast the unknown 22-year-old Neal opposite the 47-year-old Cooper.

The Oscar-winning actor Patricia Neal has died aged 84. We look back over her career in clips
Write-ups of the life of Patricia Neal, who died from lung cancer in Martha's Vineyard yesterday, tend to be dominated by two things: her marriage to the author Roald Dahl, and her fall into a coma for three weeks when pregnant with their fifth child (Dahl subsequently oversaw her rehabilitation). But look back over clips of Neal's career and her remarkable talent and intensity once more come into sharp focus. With her deep, sardonic voice, her blazing eyes and pickaxe cheekbones, Neal was a most imposing leading lady. But she was also good-humoured, with a great, uninhibited cackle and a sly sideways glance that suggested a fine sense of fun.
After a spell in the theatre, Neal made her film debut in 1949 alongside Ronald Reagan in wartime bigamy comedy John Loves Mary. Billed in the trailer as "lovely,...

Patricia Neal, the Oscar-winning actress whose life was as dramatic and inspirational as anything she did on stage and screen, died Sunday of lung cancer at her home in Edgartown, Mass. She was 84.
Most identifiable playing characters of strong will and resilience, Neal won her Academy Award for her portrayal of a demoralized housewife in "Hud" (1963), opposite Paul Newman, then earned another nomination for "The Subject Was Roses" (1968), playing the pitiful mother of a returning war victim (Martin Sheen).
In February 1965, after the first day of filming "Seven Women," Neal -- then 39 and three months pregnant -- suffered three strokes caused by a brain hemorrhage as she was bathing to her 8-year-old daughter, Tessa. She was in a coma for three weeks.
She emerged unable to speak, her memory erased and her right side paralyzed. Neal was confined to a wheelchair at first, but her husband, British writer Roald Dahl,...
