This was the first French feature shot entirely in 16mm and then blown up for release in 35mm.
Jean-Luc Godard's segment "Montparnasse et Levallois" originated from the news story that Alfred Lubitsch (Jean-Paul Belmondo) told Angela (Anna Karina) in a restaurant in A Woman Is a Woman (1961).
Since the CNC did not support 16mm, which it considered substandard, for full length filming permits, but only for short subjects, producer Barbet Schroeder did not submit a request with them for a feature, but instead submitted six separate short subject requests, which are shown in the opening credits.
