Gun-Toting Riders, Western Drifting and Scraping the Barrel, 13 MÁRCIUS 2007

A Western film about a drifter that succeeds in being a drifter itself. Son of a Gunfighter is no masterpiece, that's for certain. But it's got enough grit, grainy backdrops and gun-toting riders to keep genre fans happy.

The main problem is that the film feels empty: it lacks emotion. It's only when leading man Johnny Ketchum (played by Russ Tamblyn) is forced into making difficult decisions about his father that any sense of substantial impact becomes embedded in the film. Despite the odd bandito gatherings and sporadic action scenes, the film only comes into its own at the climax. The acting doesn't really excel either; the Spanish leading lady (playing a Mexican character) delivers her duff English dialogue in an Indian accent.

The story isn't necessarily bad, it just could have been made a lot more interesting and ably produced. Altogether it's a so-so film that those who dig frontier-flicks will accept and tolerate, but for many others it's a 'Paella Western' that isn't hard to pass on.
