After the success of his first venture into the spy-thriller genre, Code Name: Tiger (1964), director Claude Chabrol was invited to make another film in the same vein. That film was to be Our Agent Tiger (1965), it was intended to be more of a copy of the James Bond films which were hugely successful worldwide. The only difference was that Chabrol didn't have the resources compared to the likes that were availble to the Bond films, so rather than attempting a straight lift, he opted for something more on the lines of a spy parody, similar to Georges Lautner's The Great Spy Chase (1964) and Jean-Charles Dudrumet's Killer Spy (1965), a genre that was also proving to be popular at the time.
This was the first time that Claude Chabrol had directed Michel Bouquet in a film. Bouquet would later appear in Chabrol's other work, such as The Road to Corinth (1967), The Unfaithful Wife (1969), and Just Before Nightfall (1971).
One of the few times Claude Chabrol would make a sequel to a film he previously made. The only other time would be Inspector Lavardin (1986), which was a sequel Chabrol made to his film Cop Au Vin (1985).
