Netflix is reportedly spending $5 billion for 10 years of WWE programming; the streaming giant might want to avoid fighting the NFL for viewers.
For essentially the whole of its over 30-year reign as one of cable television’s most popular programs, WWE’s flagship show “Monday Night Raw” has lived on Monday nights — but now that sports entertainment's marquee show is moving from cable to Netflix is a move to a different day on the table? In all of Netflix’s press materials announcing the move, the show was only referred to as “Raw,” removing any reference to its traditional air date. Does that mean that when the WWE moves to the world’s largest streamer in 2025 that “Raw” could be on a new night?

One of the greatest plays in sports isn’t taking place on any athletic field.
Walt Disney Co. and the National Football League are said to be in earnest talks, according to two people familiar with the matter, that could have the league take a stake in ESPN while putting its NFL Media unit, which the sports body has been trying to monetize in better fashion, under the media company’s control. Such a move would further align Disney with the NFL, making it difficult for the company to lose valuable sports rights to show top-rated football games, and could put such NFL assets as the NFL Network and RedZone under Disney’s aegis.
Disney and the NFL declined to comment on the talks, which were reported previously by The New York Post and The Atlantic. Disney has been seeking partners for ESPN as it faces declines in one of...

“Both men met for over four hours and by all accounts they really hit it off,” the “Tonight Show” host said Thursday night. “That’s great news for Biden, because usually when something lasts for over four hours he has to immediately call a doctor.”
Fallon then used his opening monologue to play footage from President Xi’s press conference following the meeting. True to form, the late-night host’s take on the conference was a bit sillier than what really happened.
“I had a productive meeting with President Biden. The U.S. and China have the world’s more important bilateral relationship,” a subtitled version of President Xi said in the clip. “Well, second most important, after Travis and Tay Tay.”

CBS’ game show Loteria Loca, which has been airing Mondays since Oct. 2, is coming off the schedule effective immediately after five low-rated airings in the Monday 9 Pm time slot, sandwiched between The Price Is Right At Night at 8 Pm and an NCIS rerun at 10 Pm.
The game show, based on a Mexican format, was slated to move to 8 Pm on Nov. 13, with back-to-back NCIS reruns from 9-11 Pm. Instead, CBS is switching to a lineup of wall-to-wall NCIS encores Monday from 8-11 Pm on both Nov. 6 and Nov.13, leading to the Nov. 14 debut of NCIS: Sydney, the Australian spinoff of the venerable crime drama.
CBS has mounted a big promotional effort for NCIS: Sydney, the only scripted series on its strikes-impacted fall schedule, which has not been previously available in the U.S.

CBS takes the crown for Week 7 of the NFL regular season, with a little help from the Kansas City Chiefs.
The NFL on CBS late national window hosted the team’s defeat of the Los Angeles Chargers in a majority of markets, averaging 24.38M viewers. Not only was it the most-watched NFL game this week, it is also the most-watched Week 7 game window for CBS in a decade.
In the earlier regional game window, led by the Bills-Patriots game in about 50% of markets, CBS scored 15.7M viewers. That’s the network’s most-watched Week 7 regional game since 1998.
Overall, the doubleheader averaged 19.73M viewers, which is also a Week 7 best for CBS (since 1998). According to Paramount Global, streaming viewership on Paramount+ has continued to register double-digit year-over-year growth each week this season (though the company did not provide any data).

Entertainment fans woke up to fantastic news on Monday: the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) had agreed on a tentative deal for a new contract on Sunday night.
There are still lots of details and procedural moves to take care of; for instance, the WGA’s members have yet to officially ratify the offer. But historically, once WGA leadership has agreed to a deal with studios, the guild’s membership usually ratifies the new contract without much delay, and by the end of the first week of October, many of these final hurdles will likely be cleared.
Talk shows will be some of the first batch of content to return to airwaves once the new deal is officially in place for WGA scribes, just as they were some of the first shows to be pulled once the writers’ strike became official.

The Writers Guild of America (WGA) and Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) may have an unexpected ally in their continuing strikes against Hollywood producers: cable providers. John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal reports that several cable executives are hopping mad about Disney’s plan to air significantly more “Monday Night Football” games on ABC this season than originally scheduled.
The industry’s top executives are meeting this week in New York for what’s called “Diversity Week,” an annual gathering of cable brass to discuss the state of the business. Several cable representatives spoke on background to Ourand about Disney’s plans to cover gaps in programming left by the writer/actor strike, which are ruffling some feathers, to say the least.
“This whole double-dipping on the backs of distributors is just ridiculous,” one pay-tv executive said. “This is not going to endear the Walt Disney Co.

“I’m told the replay of Nick Chubb getting injured is not to be seen,” Monday Night Football’s Joe Buck said on the ABC broadcast tonight. In the background just after, you could hear the stadium crowd react to the footage being shown onscreen.
“Yeah, we’re not going to show it. It’s as bad as you can imagine,” replied analyst Troy Aikman.
Chubb, the Cleveland Browns’ star running back, was on a short run near the end zone when he was hit low by Steelers safety Minkah Fitzpatrick and went down at the 3 yard line. He immediately grabbed his left leg and took off his helmet. You can see the play below, without the gruesome close-up.

ABC viewers will be getting a very hefty dose of “Monday Night Football” this year. The channel was originally scheduled to air seven total “Mnf” games in the 2023 season, with four of those being exclusive to ABC. But Sports Business Journal's John Ourand is reporting that the NFL and Disney are adding 10 more games to the “Mnf” slate for ABC this season, all of which will be simulcast on ESPN.
The change reduces the number of ESPN-exclusive “Mnf” games to three. ESPN+ will also get an exclusive game, but the rest will be available to watch without a cable subscription on an over-the-air broadcast channel. This will mark the first time in years that so many “Monday Night Football” games will be available on ABC in a season.
Ourand reports that the move is being made to help Disney fill programming slots that are currently vacant on ABC thanks to the ongoing writer/actor strike.

“Monday Night Football” was for many years a staple of ABC’s Monday-night line-up before it moved to ESPN in 2006. This fall, it will be so again.
ABC will air ten more “Mnf” games than previously expected this season, simulcasting then with Disney TV sibling ESPN in a move that will help the broadcast network as the industry grapples with ongoing strikes by WGA and SAG-AFTRA. ABC said last week that the show previously scheduled for Monday, “Dancing With The Stars,” would launch on Tuesdays instead.
The football stratagem is seen as a one-time-only maneuver made due to extraordinary circumstances. ABC, like its rivals, will have fewer scripted originals this fall due to the strikes and live sports have proven, perhaps, to be the one format still able to lure an attractive, large audience all watching content simultaneously — a dynamic still craved by advertisers and distributors.

For the first time in 17 years, ABC will have a full season of Monday Night Football on its airwaves.
The broadcast network, which had several NFL matchups on its slate already for the fall, will simulcast the remaining portion of the Mnf schedule (10 games’ worth) with ESPN. The move will likely increase Monday Night Football’s overall audience over games that are only on ESPN — the Sept. 11 season opener on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 drew the biggest audience since the franchise’s move to cable — and will also complete what had been a rather fluid ABC schedule for the fall, as it and other networks try to program a full week while writers and actors remain on strike.

Thursday’s kickoff game on NBC (24.75 million viewers), CBS’ late afternoon Sunday matchup (21.35 million, NBC’s Sunday Night Football (20.18 million) and Monday Night Football on ABC, ESPN and ESPN2 (22.64 million) all topped 20 million viewers, the first time four broadcasts have done so on the opening weekend since 2015. Both of Fox’s Sunday games drew smaller audiences than in week one last year, however, as did the 1 p.m. Et kickoff on CBS.

Something to Stream Every Day This Week; 'Mnf' Week 1, 'Foundation' and 'Winning Time' Finales, More
What a difference a week makes! In many parts of the United States, summer weather has already given way to fall with plunging temperatures, changing leaves and the proliferation of pumpkin spice-flavored offerings on grocery store shelves from coast to coast.
The carriage dispute that caused Disney-owned cable channels to go dark for nearly 15 million Spectrum cable customers is now resolved as well, though admittedly that took a little longer than a week to sort through. That means Spectrum customers have their service back in time to watch the first “Monday Night Football” game of the season , but what other titles are coming to streaming this week to help viewers bid summer farewell?

Disney is passing the puck to an unlikely player in a bid to pair some of its younger viewers with live sports TV.
On March 14 at 7 p.m. Et, ESPN will make available a live telecast of a match between the Washington Capitals and the New York Rangers on the Disney Channel and Disney Xd cable outlets as well as the Disney+ streaming service — and kids might just see it as another fun program. That’s because the game, the “NHL Big City Greens Classic,” will be animated and feature a few characters from the popular cartoon series “Big City Greens.” A more traditional version of the game will be available on ESPN and ESPN+.

Al Michaels, considered the dean of NFL announcers, will helm Prime Video’s exclusive Thursday Night Football livestreams this fall, alongside ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit.
Amazon made the news official today, though it has been in the wind (at least the Michaels part) for months. The tech giant will kick off its 11-year rights deal on September 15, the first time a streaming platform will have a weekly NFL exclusive. While the company has not confirmed the price it paid for rights, numerous reports have pegged it at $1 billion a year. The weekly showcase of 15 regular-season games will add some potent fuel to Amazon’s burgeoning efforts to scale its video advertising business, across Prime Video, IMDb TV and Twitch.
Michaels, 77, had a 15-year run on NBC’s Sunday Night Football and before that became a national figure during his tenure at ABC, which encompassed Monday Night Football as well as baseball and other sports.

Fans of “Thursday Night Football” will next season hear one of TV sports’ most recognizable voices calling the games for a rather sizable upstart hoping to gain new yards off his play.
Michaels, who has offered play-by-play patter for “Monday Night Football” and “Sunday Night Football” since 1986, will lead a new effort by Amazon’s Prime Video, which has gained sole rights to telecast the NFL’s “Thursday Night Football” in the fall. Starting Thursday, September 15, Michaels will team up with analyst Kirk Herbstreit, known for his college football prowess at ESPN, to lead coverage of the games as Amazon becomes a bigger player in TV sports rights — which have largely been the domain of traditional broadcasters. They will be part of a team that also includes Fred Gaudelli, the veteran “Sunday Night Football” producer who will remain part of the NBC Sports executive team. NBC is collaborating with Amazon in its production.

After stepping into the booth several times last season, Mike Tirico has been tapped as the play-by-play announcer for “Sunday Night Football” on NBC with the legendary Al Michaels heading to Amazon Prime Video to call games for the streamer’s NFL package.
“When Mike joined NBC Sports in 2016, it was our plan for him to become our primetime Olympics host and the play-by-play voice of Sunday Night Football,” NBC Sports chairman Pete Bevacqua said. “We are excited to have Mike join Cris Collinsworth full-time in the booth this season.”
Michaels is coming off his record 36th season as an NFL play-by-play announcer in prime time. Michaels, the recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Emmy Award in 2011, also called his 11th Super Bowl in February to match the most for a TV commentator. ESPN veteran Kirk Herbstreit will join Michaels at Amazon as color analyst.

After nine years of generating headlines for CNN, Jeff Zucker is giving new thought to testing his acumen for the world of sports.
The former WarnerMedia and NBCUniversal executive, who abruptly left his job as head of CNN in February after acknowledging he failed to disclose a romantic relationship with Allison Gollust, CNN’s former chief marketing officer, is said to be mulling some offers from the sports sector, according to two people familiar with the matter. None of these conversations are believed to be in their final stages, according to one of these people, and Zucker is said to be having discussions around a wide array of potential opportunities.
Sports wouldn’t be a new area for Zucker. In 2019, he took oversight of WarnerMedia’s Turner Sports, in addition to running CNN. During his time as head of the bulk of the company’s live-programming assets, Turner Sports expanded...

Al Michaels, the longtime NFL play-by-play commentator, has signed an agreement with Amazon Prime video, according to the New York Post, which will see him leading the streamer’s coverage of Thursday Night Football this fall. As of writing, Amazon has yet to make an official statement on the matter. Michaels has been a sportscaster since the late 1960s, most notably providing coverage for ABC Sports for three decades between 1976 and 2006 and with NBC Sports since 2006. There will be a lot of music in Sunday’s Super Bowl Lvi telecast, and no, we’re not talking about the halftime show — rather, the music at the start of the show and throughout the game itself.
John Williams’ “Sunday Night Football” march is expected to open the broadcast. “That’s our theme,” says Super Bowl executive producer Fred Gaudelli. “There’s a grandeur to it, an importance, that lets you know that a big game is about to begin. And there is no bigger game than the Super Bowl.”
But, Gaudelli adds, a great deal of other music will be heard as the Cincinnati Bengals and Los Angeles Rams take to the field, much of it in the tradition of televised sports themes dating back to the 1960s: appropriately muscular music to accompany modern-day gladiators into the arena for battle.

ESPN executives have been trying since 2018 to convince Peyton Manning to join the in-studio broadcast team for their flagship “Monday Night Football.” Now they may be happier that he turned down those overtures.
That’s because the retired NFL quarterback has gained traction with an alternate “Monday Night Football” telecast for ESPN2 that he began hosting with his younger brother, Eli, another former all-star Qb, in September. The stakes couldn’t be higher for ESPN, the NFL or the TV business — even though the decidedly low-tech broadcast, which quickly came to be known as “ManningCast,” feels like a cross between hanging out in a sports bar and a glorified Zoom session.

Disney CEO Bob Chapek said during the company’s first-quarter earnings call Wednesday that ESPN has extended its contract with Peyton Manning and his Omaha Productions that means ESPN2’s alt-Monday Night Football show Monday Night Football with Peyton and Eli will continue through 2024.
The new pact also calls for alternative presentations (with other hosts) for UFC, college football and golf to be produced by Omaha Productions in collaboration with ESPN.
Manning co-hosts the live show with his brother Eli Manning, with both appearing remotely along with a rotation of guests to provide live commentary on ESPN’s Mnf feed. Guests have included former and currently NFL players and other celebrities. Where to Watch ‘Daybreak’: Netflix
Part of what made “Daybreak” an enjoyable season of TV is that it mostly put its zombies in the background. The Netflix adaptation of the Brian Ralph graphic novel certainly had other things on its mind: fourth-wall breaks, telestrated maps, and a few other devices noted here. It’s set in a not-too-distant world where a sophisticated explosive bioweapon has targeted adults, leaving kids unaffected (unless you count the destruction of buildings and the layer of washed-out permadust covering nearly everything in sight). In “Daybreak,” the only zombies are the former parents and teachers and authority figures, grown people reduced to muttering “ghoulies” who just amble around muttering unless they’re provoked.
If the high-school characters in “Daybreak” see themselves as the star of their own story, it’s because they’re pretty much right. But for a world without parents,...

The National Football League is rebounding from several down years and appears to be recovering the audience it lost during the pandemic.
Fresh off the news that NBC’s Sunday Night Football once again was a ratings powerhouse for the National Football League comes word that the rest of the schedule also scored gains.
The Wall St. Journal reports that television and digital ratings for NFL regular-season games jumped 10% compared with last season. That’s the league’s best numbers since 2015, according to Nielsen data.
However, the gains have to be put into perspective. The league has struggled over the last few years, and was particularly hit hard last year.
In 2020, disappointing NFL ratings were forcing television networks to restructure deals with advertisers to make up for the smaller audience, according to a Wall Street Journal report.

Can Alex Rodriguez do for ESPN’s baseball presentations what Peyton and Eli Manning have done for its “Monday Night Football”? The Disney-backed sports-media giant is going to find out.
ESPN on Friday outlined a new strategy for its flagship “Sunday Night Baseball,” setting up Rodriguez and veteran sports commentator Michael Kay in a special flanker presentation of eight games on ESPN2 while enlisting David Cone in a new multi-year deal alongside Karl Ravech and Eduardo Perez for the original “Snb.” The plan appears to emulate what ESPN has done in the fall, broadcasting its regular “Monday Night Football” on its primary cable network while setting up the Manning brothers and guests ranging from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to David Letterman in a freewheeling bull session that plays off game action.

“The Cleaning Lady” series premiere didn’t exactly wipe the floor with its competition on Monday, but it cleaned up enough for Fox. Jimmy Fallon’s “That’s My Jam” also officially premiered last night on NBC, just to lesser success — and with a lesser lead-in. (“Officially” there because there was previously a preview.) Monday’s highest-rated broadcast program among adults 18-49 was the Season 26 premiere of “The Bachelor.” The return of the dating competition led ABC to a win in the key demo’s ratings, but didn’t perform nearly as well in terms of total viewers. In terms of other season premieres, Monday saw the start to new seasons of “Kenan” (though there was a holiday special late in 2021) and Fox’s “9-1-1: Lone Star.” The latter one there is what helped out “The Cleaning Lady.” ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” game aired in local markets on NBC and ABC,...

ABC is basking in the primetime spotlight of the NFL as its coverage of the Los Angeles Rams-Arizona Cardinals game on Monday Night Football was the night’s top-rated program.
The Rams’ 30-23 victory earned a 1.5 demo rating in the adults 18-49 demographic and 6.69 million viewers, per Nielsen fast affiliates. However, numbers are set to rise as they usually do with major live events, like sports. ABC’s coverage was significantly behind NBC’s Sunday Night Football coverage the previous night.
Coming in second in the demo Monday was the latest episode of The Voice on NBC, the evening’s most-watched program among the broadcasters. Going up against both Mnf and The Voice was Fox’s Gordon Ramsay’s Road Trip and the CW’s All American.

ESPN’s Monday Night Football ended an eight-week year-over-year ratings win streak when Tom Brady and his Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ clobbered the lowly New York Giants this week.
The 30-10 game drew an audience of 12 million across ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN Deportes, which was down a bit from the previous Monday and by more than a million from the season-to-date average. The latter figure number, however, remains up by double digits over 2020.
Viewership peaked during the first half as the last-place Giants hung with the Super Bowl champion Bucs at Raymond James Stadium. But the home team scored all 13 points after that to stroll away with the win, and many viewers tuned out. The game did manage to be the most-watched primetime TV program on Monday.

It’s been more than a year since Erin Andrews and Tom Bergeron were fired from “Dancing with the Stars,” and while fans may not still be over it, Andrews says it was for the best.
“My schedule has been so crazy with [football commentating], the clothing line, the podcasts, all this stuff, trying to have a baby, that I think it was the best thing for me,” she told “Us Weekly.” “They wanted to go a different direction, and they’re doing that now. So, hopefully they’re happy.”
Andrews, who placed third on Season 10 in 2010, and Bergeron had co-hosted “Dancing” since 2014. They were fired in July 2020 as part of a creative overhaul and were replaced by Tyra Banks in a shocking announcement, but the sportscaster holds no grudges. “I feel like the one thing I’ve learned in this business is that’s show business, right? That’s Hollywood,” she said.
