The producers at New Line Cinema had the opening fatality of Final Destination 3 in their back pocket well before the movie’s 2006 premiere. In fact, talks of a deadly theme park ride made the rounds before creative partners James Wong and Glen Morgan returned to write the script. After the disappointing return on 2003’s Willard, New Line wanted something thrilling for its next horror project. A “roller coaster” movie, as New Line founder Robert Shaye put it. Like-minded Richard Brener is also owed some credit; the executive producer apparently was on the same wavelength after brainstorming ideas — initially anything big and transportational, such as boats and trains — for the intended conclusion of this franchise. However, the overwhelming box-office numbers steered the original plan off course and Death lived on to kill another day.

Mikey (1992)
Director Dennis Dimster-Denk’s Mikey had the tagline “Remember, Jason and Freddy were kids once too”, and the movie does its best to make sure the titular creepy kid (played by Brian Bonsall) is just as deadly as any adult slasher. Mikey does some really nasty stuff in this movie and racks up an impressive body count… and Dimster-Denk certainly wasn’t afraid of pushing the envelope. The movie begins with the murder of a five-year-old and proceeds to show Mikey obsessively creeping...

One thing that all the great, iconic, landmark Hollywood films of any era have in common is universality. As Clint Eastwood’s iconic serial killer thriller “Dirty Harry” turns 50 this week, the Don Siegel film’s rocky critical reception back in 1971 only temporarily obscured the pic’s primal pull and lasting (not “Sudden”) impact. Like “Casablanca” and “The Best Years of Our Lives,” both powerfully relevant to World War II survivors, or “Grapes of Wrath,” which spoke to Depression era audiences, or “In the Heat of the Night” with its relevance to the Civil Rights revolution, “Harry” was the man of the Nixon/Law and Order moment, which we now see was much a bigger harbinger of tumultuous social change than just Tricky Dick and the transitory winds blown up by a single political figure.

Over three decades after its release, "Back to the Future" remains one of the most beloved films ever made. Many look back fondly on the time-traveling adventures of Doc Brown and Marty McFly, including the cast and crew. However, that definitely isn't the case for one person in particular: Crispin Glover.
The actor who would go on to star in such films as "Willard," the 2000 reboot of "Charlie's Angels," "Hot Tub Time Machine," and "What's Eating Gilbert Grape?" first gained recognition in Hollywood for his breakout role as George McFly in "Back to the Future." But this part also gave him...

Sometimes a successful sequel requires the filmmakers to tear apart what made the previous entry work, and piece together something new; perhaps just keeping the engine and the chassis, and other car stuffs that I know nothing about. What I do know, however, is that when you rebuild a clever psychodrama like Willard (1971) and turn it into a Rats Gone Wild meets Disney Lonely Sick Boy flick, the result is Ben (1972). And that result is a model so endearingly odd I’m amazed it made it off the assembly line at all, yet so glad it did.
Released by Cinerama Releasing in late June stateside with a worldwide rollout in the fall, Ben was viewed by critics at the time as a laughable follow up to a film that didn’t exactly win over reviewers. They simply found the premise and execution unfrightening and silly, and moved on. They’re not wrong,...

With a relentless delivery of some of the most head-turning lines in cinema, R. Lee Ermey had a commanding, unparalleled screen presence in films and television, and we're sad to share the news of the iconic actor's passing at the age of 74.
The news of R. Lee Ermey's passing was shared on Twitter by his manager, Bill Rogin, who posted:
"It is with deep sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey ("The Gunny") passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us.
Semper Fi, Gunny. Godspeed."
A Us Marine, Vietnam veteran, and drill instructor in real life, Ermey brought that same military intensity, determination, and passion to the big screen in 1987 for his standout role as Gunnery Sergeant Hartman in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.
Although he's perhaps best known for his award-worthy work in Full Metal Jacket,...

I recently received Blu-ray copies of both Willard and Ben, both out on May 16 from Scream Factory. I feel that these releases would have been better as a pair released in the same package, but I'm not not a distributor and can't really tell them how to run their business. While Willard is regarded as a classic in certain circles, Ben is much more geared to children with its child protagonist/new leader of the rats, Danny. Both films are PG-rated schlock that I can only recommend to purists or families looking to introduce their wee ones to gentle horror. In Willard, the titular character, played by Bruce Davison, is at his wit's end as he's further pushed out of the company his deceased father helped found by his boss (the always-great...

The human condition. It is a tricky and complicated concept for us mortals to grasp in terms of our ugly, unpredictable behaviors. However, when one applies a revealing spotlight on the animal kingdom and takes a look at their on-screen aggression against humans it becomes a whole new ballgame. Occasionally, the source of frustration embedded in these wayward creatures is often times triggered by the psychological prompting of the bad seed humans responsible for their behavioral tirade against nature and man.

Writer Lee Gambin calls them Natural Horror films, other writers call them Revenge of Nature or Nature Run Amok films and writer Charles Derry considers them a type of Apocalyptic Cinema.
Of course we’re speaking of one of the great horror subgenres for which we’ll employ writer Kim Newman’s tag: The Revolt of Nature.
Since the end of the 1990s, lovers of animal attack films have been subjected to copious amounts of uninspired Nu Image, Syfy Channel and Syfy Channel-like dreck like Silent Predators (1999), Maneater (2007) Croc (2007), Grizzly Rage (2007) and a stunning amount of terrible shark attack films to name a few that barely scratch the surface of a massive list.
These movies fail miserably to capture the intensity of the unforgettable films they are imitating and the recent wave seems to carry with it the intent of giving the Revolt of Nature horror film a bad name.

Let's give Rob and Sheri Moon Zombie, the Sonny and Cher of sadomasochistic horror, the benefit of the doubt and assume they set out to make "The Lords of Salem" some sort of instant bad cult film about witches.
That still doesn't excuse how dull this one is, how slowly those dull things happen, how the heavy metal rocker-turned-horror director Rob seems to have forgotten how to make even his simplest sand jolts pay off.
And it doesn't explain how Sheri could have made as many of these movies with her husband (the high mileage shows in her tattoos) and not learned a damned thing about acting. Sleeping nude in the opening scene, yes. She's got that down. And sleeping with her jammies all bunched up down her thighs.
But from the moment her character, Heidi the recovering addict late-night DJ, stands in front of a neon cross, holding her...

The sequel to the 1959 "classic" Attack of the Killer Shrews is well on its way, and whether you like it or not, we have a new trailer and one-sheet for you to check out. No, this is Not an April Fool's joke. Steve Latshaw’s Return of the Killer Shrews is serious business.
Steve Latshaw’s low budget tongue-in-cheek sequel to an even lower budget 1959 bad movie classic has wrangled a few name actors, including “Dukes of Hazzard” star John Schneider, Transylmania beauty Jennifer Lyons, all-purpose character actor Bruce Davison, and original Killer Shrews star James Best, who is probably best remembered for his turn as the Wile E. Coyote-ish Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane on the “Dukes of Hazzard.”

Actor and comedian Fred Willard, best known for his work in Christopher Guest’s comedies, was arrested at adult cinema (for you youngsters, this was the internet for your grandparents, and also where your father was when he had “late meetings”) the Tiki Theater for allegedly holding his penis. THR is reporting that Willard and his lawyer, Paul Takakjian, are contesting the charges, with Takakjian noting that he will be “working vigorously to clear [Willard’s] name” in relation to the allegations that Willard was working vigorously. Fight fire with fire, guys.
Officers allegedly found Willard during a “routine police search” of the theatre, which is surely the hardest beat those cops could be on, considering what they must be exposed to daily. For his part, Willard called the whole thing a “big misunderstanding” when interviewed by TMZ, which is better than when the same thing happened to me and it was...

Andy Griffith and Ernest Borgnine were early, trend-setting examples of stars who made the transition from movies to television, often (in Borgnine’s case) oscillating between them. And because they both jumped mediums, Griffith and Borgnine, who died within a week of each other (Griffith on July 3, Borgnine on July 8), had fans of every phase of their career who didn’t necessarily overlap. Yet during this last week or so, as I thought back over the many, many decades of pleasure that both these actors had given us, I kept returning to what were, for me, their two greatest performances.

Los Angeles — He was a tubby tough guy with a pug of a mug, as unlikely a big-screen star or a romantic lead as could be imagined.
Yet Ernest Borgnine won a woman's love and an Academy Award in one of the great lonelyhearts roles in "Marty," a highlight in a workhorse career that spanned nearly seven decades and more than 200 film and television parts.
Borgnine, who died Sunday at 95, worked to the end. One of his final roles was a bit part as a CIA records-keeper in 2011's action comedy "Red" – fittingly for his age, a story of retired spies who show that it's never too late to remain in the game when they're pulled back into action.
"I keep telling myself, `Damn it, you gotta go to work,'" Borgnine said in a 2007 interview with The Associated Press. "But there aren't many people who want to put Borgnine to work these days.

Academy Award winner Ernest Borgnine is one of those actors whom you have seen a million times in a million different films. He was the quintessential character actor, and we can honestly say we'll never have another like him. Playful, smart, and unforgettable, the man has passed on at age 95.
Borgnine brought a great deal of honesty and believability to each of his characters. No matter what the role, he breathed life into it like no one else could. Whether it be as Cabbie from Escape from New York or the malevolent Jonathan Corbis in The Devil's Rain, he was there giving it 110%, and Hollywood is all the better for it. Borgnine's other genre appearances include Willard, Deadly Blessing. Gattaca, and much more.

We are sad to report that Ernest Borgnine passed away today at the age of 95. According to his spokesman Harry Flynn, Borgnine passed at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his family by his side.
The acting veteran was known for such movies as From Here to Eternity, The Wild Bunch, and The Dirty Dozen. He also had dozens of TV appearances, including a 138-episode run on McHale’s Navy. In 1955, Ernest Borgnine earned a Best Actor Academy Award for his role in Marty.
On the genre side of things, Borgnine has roles in Willard, Deadly Blessing, The Devil’s Rain, and Gattaca, but I’ll always remember him as Cabbie in one of my favorite films, Escape From New York. Our thoughts are with Ernest Borgnine’s friends and family. There are many that will miss him, but he has left behind an impressive body of work that will be enjoyed for generations to come.

Sharks, dogs, rats, snakes, even earthworms. Any one of them (being big enough, or with enough of their friends) can kill you dead…quickly. The animal world is pretty much a bastard with big teeth and an insatiable appetite waiting to eat whatever lesser life form comes across its path. Piranha 3Dd is the newest reminder of that.
Everyone loves their favorite pet and can't get enough of happy little penguins or otters or other cute creatures, but the truth is animals can be simply brutal. Just keep that little fact in the back of your mind the next time you bend down to pet a strange dog. Snap! Goodbye nose. With that in mind, and with Piranha 3Dd hitting the open waters, isn't it only fitting that we would take a look back at the Top 13 Killer Animal Films of All Time?!?!
Of course we mustn't forget our honorable mentions!

John Carter, based on the John Carter of Mars series written by Edgar Rice Burroughs, was released last weekend with underwhelming box-office results in North America. Expect a more enthusiastic reception for the Warner Archive's release of the late '60s television series Tarzan (season one, in two parts) in celebration of the Lord of the Apes' 100th anniversary. Ron Ely stars, while guests include former Tarzan Jock Mahoney, Academy Award nominee Julie Harris (The Member of the Wedding), Star Trek's Nichelle Nichols, Woody Strode, Russ Tamblyn, Maurice Evans, Jack Elam, and Chips Rafferty. Also coming out via the Warner Archive Collection are several lesser-known titles that should definitely be worth a look, especially considering the talent involved. Released in a newly remastered print, the 1941 drama Rage in Heaven was directed by W.S. Van Dyke (aka "One-Take Woody"), and stars Ingrid Bergman, Robert Montgomery, and George Sanders. Christopher Isherwood contributed to the screenplay.

Yes, this is typically a Foy story, but since I doubt he had as big a crush on the subjects as yours truly did back in the day, I volunteered for duty. Feast your eyes on the first stills of Barry Williams and Danny Bonaduce from the upcoming Syfy creature feature Bigfoot.
That's right - Greg Brady meets Danny Partridge in a Syfy Original Movie from The Asylum directed by Bruce Davison (Willard, X-Men, The Lords of Salem). Davison co-stars along with Sherilyn Fenn from "Twin Peaks", Andre Royo ("The Wire", "Fringe"), "Wkrp"'s Howard Hesseman, and rockers Billy Idol and Alice Cooper.
The two former child stars play lifelong rivals (naturally) who both are trying to capture the hairy beast, but for very different reasons. No word on a release date yet, but you can be sure we'll be keep a close eye on this one!

Now here’s something I never thought I’d be writing about in 2011… It seems director Steve Latshaw has put together a sequel to the low budget 1959 B-movie “classic Killer Shrews, and he’s managed to get a few named actors in the cast! Return of the Killer Shrews stars original Killer Shrews actor James Best, who is best known as Sheriff Roscoe P. Coltrane in Dukes of Hazzard, alongside his Hazzard co-star John Schneider, Transylmania’s Jennifer Lyons and Bruce Davison. Check out the trailer after the synopsis:
A TV reality show hires Captain Thorne Sherman (James Best) and his boat to cargo supplies to the deserted offshore island they’re using as a filming location. Thorne would have refused the job because he’s been to that island before and still sees it in his nightmares. Unfortunately, as the boat departs, Thorne is too hungover to realize where they’re going,...

The one sure thing about Steve Latshaw’s Return of the Killer Shrews is that it has to be a better movie than the original 1959 snoozer. God help us if it’s not. But it has to be because the original didn’t have John Schneider, Bruce Davison, or bikini babes. Am I right?
The Killer Shrews seems an unlikely film to warrant a sequel, especially half a century later, but stranger things have happened. Steve Latshaw’s low budget tongue-in-cheek sequel to an even lower budget 1959 bad movie classic has even wrangled a few name actors, including “Dukes of Hazzard” star John Schneider, Transylmania beauty Jennifer Lyons, all-purpose character actor Bruce Davison, and original Killer Shrews star James Best, who is probably best remembered for his turn as the Wile E. Some clarification has come in with regard to Bruce Davison's part in Rob Zombie's upcoming The Lords of Salem, and along with that we have a bit of new casting news that's sure to get the hearts of those of you who grew up in the late 60's/early 70's pumping overtime. Yes, that is indeed Peter Brady whom you see in the latest picture posted by Rob on his Facebook page!
But first things first. Here's what Zombie had to say about Bruce joining the film:
I got some good news and I got some bad news. The bad news is that Bruce Dern has fallen out of The Lords Of Salem due to a scheduling conflict. But fear not! We have some great news.. Bruce Davidson [sic] has jumped in to save the day and we all couldn't be more thrilled!

Reader and contributor Gemma St. Clair returns this weekend with a new list of horror trivia:
1. The Phantom of the Opera: There are multiple versions of this film, including the original silent 1925 release (107 minutes long) and the 1929 re-release (98 minutes long). There was a third version with talking scenes, but it is now considered lost.
2. Cat’s Eye: Stephen King wrote the part for Drew Barrymore in Cat’s Eye because he was so impressed with her in Firestarter.
3. Freaks: This film was banned in the UK for nearly 30 years after its release.
4. Willard (2003): A picture of Willard’s Father in the film is actually Bruce Davidson who played Willard in the 1971 original.
5. House of the Dead: The Sega logo can be seen in the background of the rave.
6. Alone in the Dark (1982): The house that was used for Dr. Potter’s home actually belonged to a psychiatrist.

Almost one year ago, when we launched at Big Daddy, one of our first posts was about 10 horror films in need of a DVD or Blu-Ray release. The Nesting and Twice Dead which both made the list are now either out on DVD or about to be released. Other titles that made the list included The Pack, Night Warning, Massacre at Central High, Dance of the Damned, Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice, Deadly Blessing, The Kindred and Killer Party. With this second annual edition, we hope to spotlight more horror films that have fallen through the cracks. Titles that haven't been released beyond VHS (with the exception of one, that has only been released to VOD) that need the attention of us horror fans and distributors to make these titles readily available for our horror movie watching enjoyment.
