Private recording of lost TV episode is screened
At BFI Southbank's "Missing Believed Wiped" evening on 2nd November, 2012,this episode of "Thirty Minute Theatre" was screened. The BBC wiped their recording, but author B.S. Johnson had recorded the episode himself on an early 2" tape machine. The sound is poor and there's a constant background buzz, which the BFI is attempting to fix. The largely single set drama is well directed by Mike Newell and features a strong performance by Brenda Bruce. But Hugh Burden seems nervous throughout. The story of a dysfunctional family is hard to interpret. Mum (Bruce) is upset because a man exposed himself to her in a graveyard. Dad (Burden) is unsympathetic. His two grown-up kids dislike him. It's revealed that Dad is a doctor specialising in cancer. It's remarkable to think that such experimental drama once played on prime time TV.
