• Bobby Kopas : [Lundy is driving Frank, Wiley, and Kopas past the melon field with migrant workers Larry Mendoza hired]  We're up to it, now, Mr. Renda.

  [directs Frank to the field] 

  Bobby Kopas : Sir.

  Frank Renda : I thought you said nobody was working for him.

  Bobby Kopas : Oh, no crews. Just some migrants he hired, that's all.

  [They drive past a crew of road workers. Frank grows suspicious and leans towards Lundy] 

  Bobby Kopas : Go up a ways and turn around.

  [Lundy circles around and they drive back past the road construction zone] 

  Frank Renda : [to Kopas]  How long's that been here?

  Bobby Kopas : Oh, they're always patching up the road, getting in the way, you know what I mean?

  Frank Renda : How LONG?

  Bobby Kopas : [growing nervous]  I don't know, two, three days, sir, I think.

  [Frank discovers one of the road workers is actually Deputy Harold in disguise. An angry Frank yanks Kopas backwards] 

  Frank Renda : Don't you know cops when you see them?

  Bobby Kopas : [playing dumb]  Cops? Are you sure? I never thought about cops being around.

  [Frank lets go of Kopas] 

  Frank Renda : [to Lundy]  Pull over.

  Gene Lundy : Hmm?

  Frank Renda : Pull over... and stop!

  [Lundy stops the car] 

  Frank Renda : [to Kopas]  Okay, asshole... get out.

  Bobby Kopas : [scoffs]  What, right here? My car's all the way over in Edna. That's about a four or five-mile walk.

  [Lundy impatiently opens Kopa's door and he gets out] 

  Frank Renda : [signals Kopas]  Come here, you.

  [Kopas leans down near the door's backseat] 

  Frank Renda : You know, I ain't known you for a half-hour and you're talking shit to me out of the side of your face. I say I want nobody working for this guy and he's got a dozen people living here! The cops set up a grandstand to watch the show...

  [angrily clenches Kopa's hat as Wiley almost starts to laugh] 

  Frank Renda : ... and you don't even know that they're cops! I don't see where you're doing me any good, at all.

  Bobby Kopas : But I watched him for you, didn't I, so he wouldn't run, huh?

  Frank Renda : Yeah? Well, YOU better run off, now, and you better do just like Lundy says and don't you, ever, EVER talk no shit to me, again. Do you hear?

  Bobby Kopas : [uneasily]  Yes, sir.

  [He scrambles to get his hat after Frank lets it go] 

• Frank Renda : [Lundy is showing Frank and Wiley the inside of their new, spiffy camper]  A regular vacation, huh?

  Gene Lundy : Yeah.

  Frank Renda : Having a good time?

  Gene Lundy : I could use a rest. That stunt, hitting that bus, it took a couple years off me, man.

  Frank Renda : Where is he?

  Gene Lundy : [to Wiley]  Got a couple of beers?

  Frank Renda : Where is he?

  Gene Lundy : [directs a can of beer to Frank]  Want a beer?

  Frank Renda : WHERE IS HE?

  Gene Lundy : He turned himself in. They're holding him in Edna, last I heard.

  Wiley : It's kind of a tight fit, but it's got all the comforts of home, huh?

  Frank Renda : We're not home, my love, he is.

  Wiley : Frank, he's in jail, you're free. We can go anywhere you want.

  Frank Renda : There's only one thing I want.

  Gene Lundy : So, he gets out of jail, you have somebody kill him. It's the same difference, the dude's dead.

  Frank Renda : I said I want him, you understand? I want to look him in the face, hold a piece against his gut, and when I know that he's sure, I'm gonna kill him.

  Gene Lundy : Can I ask you a question? What, you just gonna walk up to that jail and ask those cops for a visitor's pass? How are you gonna get close to the dude?

  Frank Renda : You find that sucker he hit. Tell him to drop the complaint. It was all a mistake.

  Gene Lundy : Mm-hmm, suppose he doesn't want to do that?

  Frank Renda : I SAID TELL HIM, NOT ASK HIM! Then, you get a couple of our people. You find him, you call me, I come up, I'll have a talk with him, and then it's done.

  Gene Lundy : Frank, there's a dozen guys who would do it, guys who the cops aren't waiting to bust!

  Frank Renda : [enraged]  I SAID I WANT HIM! ME! Hey, I never killed anybody for free before, you see, but this one, I'm doing this as a special favor to myself and that's before I go to Matzatlan or lie on any beach! Am I getting through to you?

  [he goes to the back room and slams the curtain shut] 

• Bobby Kopas : [Vince goes outside the bar to see Kopas sitting on the hood of Lundy's car]  Hey, I hear you're looking for a crew. Maybe I can get you some winos.

  Vince Majestyk : [agitated, walks towards Kopas]  Maybe I can fix it, so you'll never smile again.

  Bobby Kopas : You touch me, you'll be back in jail before noon.

  [Kopas points across the street, where Vince sees Deputy Harold disguised as a road worker, sitting in a work truck and smiling at Vince. He walks towards his truck, but turns around to Kopas] 

  Vince Majestyk : Hey, what did you drop the complaint?

  Bobby Kopas : I'm being a good neighbor. And you think I'm pulling something, huh? Now, why would you think that?

  Vince Majestyk : [shrugs]  See me lose my crop?

  Bobby Kopas : You know, I think you're mixed up. Standing there in deep shit.

  [chuckles] 

  Bobby Kopas : And all you're worried about is losing your melon crop.

  Vince Majestyk : [walks towards Kopas again]  You've been talking to somebody, huh?

  [Kopas quickly walks toward the passenger door of Lundy's car] 

  Bobby Kopas : Yeah, like who you got in mind?

  Vince Majestyk : He get you to drop the complaint?

  Bobby Kopas : [get inside the car]  I'm tired of talking to you, but I'll tell you one thing. Somebody's gonna set your ass on fire and I'm gonna be there to watch.

  [Lundy speeds away] 

  Gene Lundy : [sarcastically, to Kopas]  Real nice, big mouth. Real nice.

  Bobby Kopas : I had to give him one. The son of a bitch.

• Gene Lundy : [Kopas and Lundy meet up with Renda and Wiley, coming back from a plane from Mexico, and gathers their luggage]  Hey, Frank. Smooth flight?

  Frank Renda : [getting out, mildly sarcastic]  Yeah.

  Gene Lundy : Rough, huh? Okay. Hey, Wiley, how you doing?

  [to Renda] 

  Gene Lundy : Your lawyer says he had to put up a bond, you gotta appear at some kind of hearing, but there's nothing he can nail you with.

  Wiley : [laughs]  God!

  Frank Renda : See?

  Wiley : Nothing like a little dumb luck, huh?

  Frank Renda : What do you mean, "luck"? The secret is, never run until you know you're being chased.

  Wiley : And have a fast lawyer available at all times.

  Frank Renda : Real fast.

  Gene Lundy : Hey, your lawyer, he's waiting at the lodge he rented for you.

  Frank Renda : Hey.

  Gene Lundy : He wants to talk to you.

  Frank Renda : Hey.

  Gene Lundy : Huh?

  Frank Renda : What about my melon picker?

  Gene Lundy : They turned him loose. That's the question, now, what the cops have in their minds.

  Frank Renda : No, the question is, what's he doing?

  Gene Lundy : [sighs]  He's around. We just saw him.

  Bobby Kopas : Probably at home, waiting on you. Uh, Mr. Renda, I was wondering if, when you finish him off, you let me put a couple slugs in him.

  Frank Renda : [unimpressed]  Who's this asshole?

  Gene Lundy : This is our friend, Bobby Kopas, the fellow Majestyk hit. He's been making sure nobody works for him, so there won't be a crowd hanging around there.

  Frank Renda : You know him good, huh?

  Bobby Kopas : Well, I know he's a stuck-up son of a bitch. He's got a few melons and think he's a big grower.

  Frank Renda : How long has he lived here?

  Bobby Kopas : Too long, huh?

  Frank Renda : [annoyed]  You know, it seems that I ask you questions and you don't answer them. I'll try you again. Would you like to show me where he lives?

  Bobby Kopas : Why, yes sir, any time.

  Frank Renda : Right now?

  Bobby Kopas : You bet.
