Pankaj Udhas earned his first accolade as a singer when he was 11 years old. He sang the patriotic song ‘Ae mere watan ke logon’ at a public event in his hometown Rajkot when the Sino-Indian War was raging in 1962, and he so impressed a member of the audience that he gifted the young singer what was then a princely sum of Rs 51.
Udhas, who passed into eternity on Monday, February 26, at the age of 72, however, had not planned to become a singer. He was training to play the tabla at the Sangeet Natya Academy in Rajkot, where he had been enrolled along with his brothers by his father, Keshubhai Udhas, a government official who had learnt to play the dilruba from Ustad Abdul Karim Khan.

The Hindi-language film industry, popularly known as Bollywood, is displaying its resilience after being hit by yet another Covid-enforced pause.
India is currently in the throes of the pandemic with 330,000 new Covid-19 cases everyday, with upward of 2,200 daily deaths. The western Indian state of Maharashtra, home to Mumbai and Bollywood, is amongst the worst hit with more than 67,000 new daily cases and 568 deaths. Of these, Mumbai accounts for some 7,410 cases and 75 deaths. The state is operating under severe movement restrictions, a lockdown in all but name, and Bollywood productions have paused.
Though the intensity of the pandemic is higher during this wave, compared to last year, there is one major difference – the industry has been through a year of hardship and is now better equipped to deal with the crisis, once the Maharashtra government lifts restrictions.
The restrictions are currently due to be lifted on May 1, unless the pandemic takes a turn for the worse.

New Delhi, March 10: The Ott space is revolutionising the way we enjoy visual entertainment, and it is reorganising a lot of things in Bollywood, too.
Among things in Bollywood that seem to be changing is the concept of stardom. Gone are the days when being a star was about big screen glory. In this context, what is currently going on has been unprecedented. Several top Bollywood stars are headed towards Ott as never before. These are not character artistes or budding stars, but established names such as Shahid Kapoor, Sonakshi Sinha, Madhuri Dixit, Raveena Tandon and Juhi Chawla.
It is something that Television never managed. At the height of superstardom, even though Amitabh Bachchan, Salman Khan or Shah Rukh Khan have appeared on TV, they came as themselves, and not to essay fictional roles. On Ott, it is the roles that seem to be attracting big Bollywood stars.

While we get to watch new films all the time, the lockdown could be a golden chance to catch up with a few classics across genres. Digital platforms are overflowing with them, and you would literally be spoilt for choice selecting some really enjoyable stuff that has come out of Bollywood over the decades. Twenty-one days, it would seem, is too short a time to catch up with what really defines vintage Bollywood and is available in the Ott libraries.
Ians picks a few old films that you might want to revisit, that will let you relax and bust the stress of lockdown. Of course, this is not a definitive list.
* Chupke Chupke (1975)
Directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee, the comedy film is about a man pretending to be a driver and fooling his wife's brother-in-law as an attempt to prove that the brother-in-law is not as smart as he claims to be.

Amitabh Bachchan's journey of five decades to become the Bollywood "Shahenshah" was not always a smooth ride. Indeed, his life is nothing short of brilliant biopic material. Early rejections were followed by a phase when he made his mark as a promising actor, which was soon overshadowed by the kind of superstardom Bollywood never saw before or after. When the superstar tried his hand at film entrepreneurship, he went bankrupt, only to bounce back and claim supremacy as a super brand and respectability as an icon.
The first reaction of the industry all those years ago, however, was far from welcoming. His tall and lanky frame, and the baritone of his voice, were deemed unsuitable for Bollywood's image of a perfect hero back then. These factors were pointed out as flaws, and reasons why he wouldn't be able to make it big in the industry.

Veteran actress and internet sensation Taimur Ali Khan's grandmother, Sharmila Tagore, says the only way for the family to deal with the paparazi frenzy over her grandson is to accept it. If you looking for some naughty fun this weekend you might want to try out this wacky piece of big-screen chortle… provided you can bear with the brainless bacchanalia sheathed in a sexual innocence that the protagonists are able to convey without straining at their collecting leash.
For a film about family planning and vasectomy there is a remarkable absence of vulgarity and double meaning in the conversations. The characters speak to each other loudly and irrelevantly. They don’t know any better.
Sunny and Bobby Deol are in the fun zone doing lowbrow comedy with disarming relish. Shreyas Talpade, with his redoubtable comic timing, joins the Deol brothers. The result is boisterous humour, not all of it funny or even coherent, I am afraid. In fact some of the gags overstay their welcome like bin bulaye mehmaan.

The makers of Vicky Donor are back with 2015’s first family entertainer, Piku starring stalwarts Amitabh Bachchan, Deepika Padukone and Irrfan! Quirky and funny with oodles of situational humor, the film highlights the eccentricities within every Indian family, told in signature Shoojit Sircar style.
If the popularity of the trailer on the social media platform is anything to go by, Piku is amongst the most anticipated films this year. While this film about a crazy father-daughter duo is packaged with ingredients that make for a perfect family comedy, director Shoojit Sircar seems to be bringing back the slice-of-life-cinema which was made popular by filmmakers like Hrishikesh Mukherjee.
A huge admirer of Mukherjee’s work, Shoojit explores a relatable story and human relationships reminiscent of Hrishikesh Mukherjee films like Gol Maal, Mili, Chupke Chupke, Guddi promising clean entertainment to the audiences after a long time.

It's finally happening. A remake of the 1975 Hrishikesh Mukherjee comedy Chupke Chupke. Long in the pipeline the eagerly-awaited remake gets a new lease of life and a completely new interpretation. Dhawan's old favourite writer Rumi Jaffrey says, "That Chupke Chupke was 36 years ago. Times have changed. In those days confusions were created among the characters over the telephone line because people were shouting to make themselves heard over crackling trunk-call lines. Times have changed. It's the era of instant communication and the new Chupke Chupke will reflect that." While the cast for the new Chupke Chupke is yet to be decided, we hear the role of the heroine's suspicious brother-in-law, played with such magnificent comicality by Om Prakash in the original film, is likely to go to Rishi Kapoor. Rishi and David Dhawan are currently working on a remake of Sai Paranjpye's Chashme Buddoor. When asked about the cast of the new Chupke Chupke,...
