When news broke earlier this week that five young up-and-coming actors were in line for the lead Jedi role in Star Wars Episode VII, Google search bars will likely have been working overtime as film fans tried to match faces to names.
Ed Speleers, John Boyega, Jesse Plemons, Matthew James Thomas and Ray Fisher may not be household names, but Star Wars has a history of turning unknowns into big stars.
With the casting cogs turning for Star Wars: Episode VII, we take a look at what Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher were up to before they met George Lucas.
Harrison Ford
Now a bona fide movie icon, it's common knowledge that Ford struggled early on in his career and starting working as a carpenter to support his family between acting gigs. Sometimes Ford didn't even get an acting credit at all, and on one occasion he was...

Jj Abrams now runs the world's two biggest sci-fi franchises. So what's he doing venturing into literature? Stuart Kelly goes looking for clues
The Übergeek. The Boy With All the Toys. The Lord of the Nerds. It might seem as if the most significant achievement of Jeffrey Jacob "Jj" Abrams, screenwriter, actor, producer, director, composer and author, is to have made fanboy culture part of the mainstream. But the publication of "his" first novel – more on those inverted commas anon – also shows that the avant garde and the experimental are in the ascendant. The fusion of popular culture and continental philosophy – works which are as au fait with Foucault as with the Flash, Boba Fett and Baudrillard, Kierkegaard and Kirk – are everywhere, from the novels of China Miéville, Michael Chabon and Scarlett Thomas, to the comics work of Grant Morrison and Mike Carey, to TV shows such as Agents of Shield.

Way Down In Chinatown Exclusive Casting Announcement
Nancy Wolfe (Susan Atkins/Sexy Sadie from Helter Skelter) joins the cast of Way Down In Chinatown
The Way Down in Chinatown production team – being independent filmmaker Eric Michael Kochmer, Angel Corbin, Maria Olsen and Jonathan Haloossim - are thrilled to welcome Nancy Wolfe of Helter Skelter fame to the cast. Wolfe has bagged the supporting role of Lindie in Way Down in Chinatown, the utterly creepy and surprisingly intense noir horror feature that will soon be unleashed on horror fans.
Wolfe caused major waves in horror / serial killer movie circles with her eerily terrifying portrayal of Susan Atkins “Sexy Sadie” in the 1976 made-for-television movie Helter Skelter, which tells the story of the gruesome Los Angeles murders masterminded by Charles Manson. Neither the Tate/Labianca murders nor Manson himself is ever out of public consciousness for long, nor should Wolfe’s portrayal of Atkins,...
