Joe Simon and Jack Kirby created Captain America in 1940 as a symbol of American propaganda. Enhanced by a powerful steroid, Steve Rogers was given over to the American military, given a colorful, American flag costume, and ordered to pummel Nazis. Indeed, on the cover of "Captain America Comics" #1, Steve can be seen punching Adolf Hitler in the face. After WWII ended, Captain America has been adrift in Marvel Comics, only finding usefulness as the leader of a ragtag group of other superbeings. It's astonishing how successful the character has been in the last 60 years or so, given that he clearly exists as a still-living relic of the Greatest Generation.
In 1944, Captain America first appeared in cinemas as the star of a 15-part Republic Pictures serial starring Dick Purcell. The character was altered dramatically for the serial, however. Instead of a weakling soldier named Steve Roger enhanced by steroids, Captain American...

Before Chris Evans grabbed a star-spangled shield and donned the mantle of Captain America, and even before the late, great, B-movie maestro Albert Pyun directed the straight-to-video 1990 "Captain America" movie, there was Universal's failed "Captain America" feature-length television film, which aired in 1979. Now a footnote in the history of superhero cinema, director Rod Holcomb's "Captain America" fits neatly next to the studio's 1978 "Dr. Strange" adaptation as similar attempts at seeing how Marvel's comic book characters could (extremely loosely) translate to low-budget, live-action TV material. Unfortunately for Holcomb, the project was a bit of an embarrassment.
Holcomb had already directed three episodes of Universal Television's "The Six Million Dollar Man" before taking on the task of adapting "Captain America," but the director was frightened that the production ended his career before it barely even began. The film starred Reb Brown, also known in B-movie circles from "Yor, the Hunter from the Future,...

Despite what you may have heard, the 1978 Doctor Strange TV movie is one of Marvel's better early TV efforts...
Marvel's 1978 Doctor Strange TV movie (officially known as Dr. Strange) is admittedly, something of an acquired taste, but there's an undeniable charm and air of mystery about it.
See related Joseph Kosinski on Tron 3 and The Black Hole remake
It's a deliberately paced origin story set in New York City that's light on action and long on exposition and sometimes questionable special effects. The eastern elements of Strange's origin are scrubbed in favour of Arthurian overtones with Morgan le Fay (Jessica Walter playing not necessarily the Marvel Comics version) as the villain and The Ancient One replaced by "Lindmer" a mentor who is, essentially, Merlin (wonderfully played by Sir John Mills). Clyde Kusatsu's Wong isn't a robed manservant, but an ally and student of the Ancient One,...

In the late 1970s, Universal Television optioned the rights to make TV shows based on characters from the Marvel Comics library, and created a number of pilots based on heroes such as the Hulk, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. In retrospect, The Incredible Hulk was by far the most successful of these - it's arguably still the definitive version of the character on screen, outside of last year's Avengers Assemble.
Even though it never led to a series, 1978's two Captain America TV movies came second-closest to success, by the virtue of even getting as far as a second movie. The first, known as Sentinel Of Liberty, establishes a different origin story for Steve Rogers, while the second,...

Indie horror thriller Renovation will now be released under the title Deadly Renovations, it has been announced.
The film centres on a group of property developers who turn into greed-driven killers when they discover their hotel project may contain a hidden stash of millions of dollars.
Renovation was shot in Yuma, Arizona, and directed by Robert Gwinn. It's slated for distribution theatrically in select markets by Nocturnal Features. It will release domestically (North America) with Midnight Releasing and overseas with Acort International, in 2012.
A statement from the filmmakers said: "The adjustment in the title will help audiences cue into the subject matter of this dark, graphic and often disturbing film.
"This decision was made to avoid any confusion that this might be a Sunday morning reality how-to show about home repairs. Quite to the contrary, this film is about deceit, deception and, as the title now reflects, deadly actions."

Let.s go back a few years to Cap.s original glory days. He literally exploded on the comic scene in 1941 with Captain America Comics #1 from Timely Comics. That company had been trying to carve out a slice of the big super hero comics market pie since National Periodicals had caused a sensation with Superman in 1938 and Batman the following year. In 1939 they had a big seller with Marvel Mystery Comics #1 and introduced their two breakaway stars: The Human Torch and The Sub-Mariner. Who would come up with the next great super hero?...

(June 2011)
Arriving in theaters on July 22, “Captain America: The First Avenger” chronicles the initial adventures of a character who first premiered more than seven decades ago. Comic-book creators Joe Simon and Jack Kirby introduced Captain America in December 1940*, one year before Pearl Harbor.
In 1940, war raged throughout Europe, but most Americans saw Nazi Germany and the accompanying atrocities as a strictly European problem. Though U.S. citizens were sympathetic to the plight, polls showed that a vast majority stood against entering the war. The virulent antiwar movement, spearheaded by the “America First” organization and its 850,000 members, hampered Franklin D. Roosevelt’s efforts to aid his British allies, the lone European force against the Nazi tide.
“Captain America Comics” No. 1
Amid this public sentiment, Timely Comics, a precursor to today’s Marvel, published “Captain America Comics” No. 1. Not the first patriotic hero — that distinction belongs to The Shield,...
