Sony’s animated “The Garfield Movie” scratched up $22 million in its international box office debut. It’s currently only playing in 18 markets, roughly 35% of its eventual overseas footprint, so those ticket sales represent a promising start for the family film.
“The Garfield Movie” doesn’t open in the U.S. and Canada until Memorial Day weekend on May 24. When it does land in domestic theaters, it’s projected to earn $35 million over the long weekend and will compete for first place with director George Miller’s “Mad Max” prequel “Furiosa.”
Overseas, “The Garfield Movie” enjoyed the biggest start in Spain with $3.2 million over five days, followed by Brazil with $2.2 million, Italy with $1.6 million and Peru with $1.3 million. According to the studio, revenues for the film are pacing 76% above fellow kid-friendly film “DC League of Super Pets” (which eventually earned $113 million internationally) and 41% higher than “Puss in Boots: The Last Wish...

Chris Hemsworth and Anna Taylor-Joy posed at the Australian premiere of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga in Sydney on Thursday.
Taylor-Joy stole the show in a spiked-filled gold dress from Paco Rabanne’s spring/summer 1996 collection. Hemsworth wore a plaid suit and a silky black shirt.
They both star in Furiosa, a post-apocalyptic film directed by George Miller, which is the latest installment of the Mad Max series.
On November 22, Hemsworth found out that he has a high risk of Alzheimer’s on the National Geographic series Limitless.
“The idea that I won’t be able to remember to live the life I’ve experienced or my wife, my kids, this is probably my biggest fear,” he said on the show.
Hemsworth is known for his role as Thor in the film series and is the older brother of Liam Hemsworth.

Drifting into the theatres with her car-stunt-heavy Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga on May 24, Anya Taylor-Joy once again brings her versatility and range to the big screen, to captivate her audiences. Playing the younger version of Imperator Furiosa in the Fury Road prequel film, Taylor-Joy proved herself to be a force to be reckoned with.

We’ve still got a few more weeks to go before the release of Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but if you’d like a little appetizer from the Wasteland, Tom Holkenborg, aka JunkieXL, has released the first track from the soundtrack for your listening pleasure.
Titled “Dementus Is Gaining,” the track from the Furiosa soundtrack definitely leads me to imagine one of the franchise’s epic chase sequences. You can have a listen below, and the track is also available on Apple Music, Spotify, iTunes Store, Deezer, and Tidal.
Tom Holkenborg also composed the soundtrack for Mad Max: Fury Road, so it’s great to have him back for Furiosa. I look forward to being blown away on all fronts.

Moviegoing remains in a sling, evident in Universal’s The Fall Guy currently coming in lower than expected with $28M this weekend. Perhaps Furiosa and Garfield can bring some zing over Memorial Day weekend at the end of the month.
Both hit three-week tracking Thursday, with the Warner Bros/Village Roadshow Mad Max prequel eyeing a $40M-$50M domestic opening over the Friday-Monday span of May 24-27 with Sony/Alcon Entertainment’s Garfield at $35M.
Earlier this week, some box office prognosticators believed it would be a closer race between the two at $30M+ apiece over four days, with the orange cat voiced by Chris Pratt having the edge. But George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Prequel, starring Anya Taylor-Joy, has the firepower of Imax and PLFs and a Cannes Film Festival world premiere as a global loudspeaker.

There's a case to be made that Chris Hemsworth is the most talented of the Marvel Studios Chrises. He's got great comedic energy and leaned into that with his later performances as Thor (even if he admittedly went overboard in "Thor: Love and Thunder"). His vengeance-driven God of Thunder is the highlight of "Infinity War" too.
He's also making interesting career choices. I'm a Captain America fan, but Chris Evans has not challenged himself as an actor since "Snowpiercer." ("Knives Out" was just him dusting off his pre-Cap screen persona of a cocky a-hole.) Chris Pratt has waltzed his way into being Hollywood's leading voice actor despite his anonymous performances in "The Super Mario Brothers" and soon, "The Garfield Movie." Hemsworth takes paycheck gigs (see: "Extraction" and his voice acting turn as young Optimus Prime in "Transformers: One" this coming Summer), but he shows ambition too. Tom Hardy, keep your phone off silent — you may soon be getting a call from George Miller.
Miller told Entertainment Weekly that he has written another “Mad Max” prequel film set one year before the events of 2015’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” which starred Hardy as the title character.
The upcoming prequel installment, “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga,” which will premiere at Cannes, has Anya Taylor-Joy as a younger version of warrior Furiosa after Charlize Theron originated the character in “Fury Road.” The script for “Furiosa” was birthed out of the pre-production process for “Fury Road.”

In fact, the possible Mad Max-character’s origin story could overlap with the events of “Furiosa.”

Chris Hemsworth is totally unrecognizable in his makeup and costumes in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The actor spent hours in the makeup chair each day, even donning a prosthetic nose and transforming himself into Dr. Dementus. The loud villain is far different from his Marvel character Thor, however, Hemsworth can’t seem to shake off one choice of attire for both roles. His Furiosa character also has to wear a cape, which he finds so impractical.

Hemsworth grew up watching Mel Gibson’s original Mad Max movies and even desired to take over when Gibson moved on from the franchise. While the lead role in Fury Road eventually went to Tom Hardy, Miller was struck by Hemsworth when he auditioned him for the role of Dementus.

It's been close to a decade since Mad Max: Fury Road revved into theaters, and with Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga fast approaching, excitement for the movie is understandably through the roof.

Serving as a prequel to 2015's action masterpiece "Mad Max: Fury Road," director George Miller is finally back nearly a decade later to deliver the long-promised fifth entry in his legendary franchise. Of all the roles Charlize Theron has donned to date, perhaps none comes as close to playing Furiosa in the Mad Max saga. George Miller's upcoming postapocalyptic car chase movie "Furiousa: A Mad Max Saga" serves as a prequel to his 2015 actioner "Mad Max: Fury Road." In the 2015 film, Charlize Theron played Imperator Furiosa, a robot-armed truck driver who rescues a group of women from sexual enslavement. This new film is an origin story set about 20 years before the events of "Fury Road" wherein Anya Taylor-Joy plays the young Furiosa, who is kidnapped from her blissful childhood in the Green Place and held captive by a vicious gang called the Biker Horde. Both films are set in the futuristic car-centric Australian desert wastelands first conceived by Miller in 1979's "Mad Max," with "Furiosa" marking the fifth film in the "Mad Max" franchise overall.

Every passing day brings us closer to director George Miller fulfilling a dream that has been decades in the making, but is that truly the end of the story? Long before he ever unleashed "Mad Max: Fury Road" upon unsuspecting audiences in 2015, as revealed in author Kyle Buchanan's excellent making-of book titled "Blood, Sweat & Chrome: The Wild and True Story of Mad Max: Fury Road," Miller's extensive backstory for the legendary Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron) ultimately led to tentative plans for an entire prequel film down the line. That time has finally come in the form of the upcoming "Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga" starring Anya Taylor-Joy and Chris Hemsworth, giving us a definitive origin for the fearsome and scene-stealing hero while putting a button on what's sure to be one heck of an action duology ... or so we thought.

George Miller "never anticipated" making 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'.The acclaimed filmmaker created the 'Mad Max franchise more than 40 years ago, and George has been amazed by its longevity.George, 79 - who has directed the latest movie in the money-spinning franchise - told Entertainment Weekly: "Here I am making another 'Mad Max' movie, which I never anticipated after the first one ... I mean, as John Lennon said, life is what happens when you're making other plans."The director also revealed that he's learned some important lessons from the earlier films. He said: "'Mad Max 2' came about because of all the things I learned from 'Mad Max': not only how to make films but, despite the difficulty I had in making it, why it was so successful."Why did the Japanese respond to it as a Samurai movie? George Miller has revealed his plans for a second Mad Max prequel – one that will take place between the events of this year’s Furiosa and 2015’s Fury Road.
Mere weeks before Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga rolls noisily into cinemas, director George Miller has revealed his plans for another prequel. This one, he says, will take place after his latest film but shortly before the events of 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road.
The idea for the second prequel emerged in a similar way to Furiosa: while making Mad Max: Fury Road, Miller and his collaborators wrote up backstories for all his characters in order to help his actors get into their roles; those backstories in turn eventually led to the screenplay for Furiosa.
The untitled prequel hasn’t been turned into a script yet, Miller says in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, but indicates that work on it could begin soon.

George Miller’s Mad Max franchise has been around for ages in the form of films, games, and comics. A part of popular culture already, its popularity further exploded when Mad Max: A Fury Road was released in 2015, three decades after the last film. Starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in the lead, it is one of the best-ranked movies of the entire saga.

Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga serves as a prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road; In fact, director George Miller has said that the movie will “butt up directly into Fury Road,” so what does that mean for Max Rockatansky?
Miller has previously said that Max is “lurking there in the background” of Furiosa, but he provided more detail on this “blink-and-you’ll-miss-it cameo” while speaking with Entertainment Weekly. The director confirms that Max and his car, the Interceptor, will appear in the prequel. “In doing what we did in the preparation of Mad Max: Fury Road, we also wrote what happened to Max in the year before we encounter him in [that film],” Miller said. “And as we get towards the end of this movie, the chronology… Basically, we had to see that Mad Max was lurking around somewhere because we do know what happened.” It sounds as though the Mad Max...

Chris Hemsworth felt "reinvigorated" by his role in 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga'.The 'Thor' star went straight into filming the 'Fury Road' prequel after suffering a back injury while making 'Extraction 2' and didn't have time to have surgery to fix the problem but he threw himself into the project and it made him feel better. He told Vanity Fair: "I said, ‘Look, I don’t have a choice [about filming with the injury]'. And as soon as I got to rehearsals, everything lifted. I just got reinvigorated. Suffering without a purpose is awful. Suffering with purpose can be rejuvenating and replenishing. In the Marvel Comics, when All-Father Odin first dubbed Thor as the God of Thunder, it was an ironic moniker, as the young crown prince of Asgard was terrified of thunderstorms as a child. Over time, Thor would go on to thoroughly earn this title after his life-altering exile in Midgard (Earth), explored in a milder capacity in Kenneth Branagh's "Thor," which cemented the character's irreplaceable status in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Chris Hemsworth's rendition of the character, when contrasted to its comic counterpart, emerges as delightfully layered: Hemsworth's Thor is a mixture of sincere self-seriousness and dorky obliviousness, with equal parts strength and vulnerability contributing to an extremely likable superhero persona. Despite the character's godlike status, Thor's presence in the MCU almost had a grounding effect, where complexity and levity went hand in hand to steer stories that brimmed with grit and heart.

Unlike Iron Man and Captain America, who became instant favorites among fans of the MCU, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor initially struggled to land his footing among the MCU greats. While his first film was far from a failure, it was still considered one of the weaker entries in the initial phases. On top of that, the critical failure of The Dark World would finally push the MCU to make some notable changes to the character.
As a result, we got Taika Waititi for the threequel, which not only surpassed the previous two entries in quality, Ragnarok ended up cementing itself as one of the best pre-Infinity War films. Unfortunately, the character once again hit a new low following the failure of Thor: Love and Thunder, and Hemsworth still hasn’t forgiven himself for this debacle.

"Mad Max: Fury Road" is one of the best movies of all time — according to /Film — a masterpiece of action cinema and a masterclass in visual storytelling. It is also a bit of a live-action cartoon. Like the best live-action directors, George Miller pulls inspiration from "Looney Tunes" as much as he does live-action movies in making his post-apocalyptic epic, with a sense of logic, physics, pacing, and fun that feels more outlandish than grounded.
But before the movie came out and became a big hit and an Oscar winner, it went through development hell for literal decades, only to go through actual hell during filming. Development took so long and suffered so many setbacks that Miller looked at alternatives to "Fury Road," including telling a completely different story in animated form. Indeed, we know that in 2009 — between two "Happy Feet" movies — Miller considered making an R-rated 3D "Mad Max" anime instead,...

At one point watching The Invisible Fight my vision started to separate. George Miller’s Mad Max: Fury Road spent so much time in development that its previous star, Mel Gibson, seemingly got too old for the action role. Gibson was replaced by Tom Hardy in the 2015 film, which went on to become one of the greatest action films of all time. Fans always wondered whether the Og Max Rockatansky would meet with the new one in any of the future installments. Miller confirmed that it wouldn’t happen and had a perfectly valid reason for it.

For decades, the Mad Max franchise has brought the outer reaches of chaos and imagination within the audience’s reach. From the brain of George Miller was born an apocalyptic wasteland that can neither be defined as dysfunctional nor dystopian since Mad Max has always existed within a framework of structured madness.

With Imperators, War Boys, Crow Fishers, and Buzzards populating and running wild on the wasteland, the world of Mad Max is devoid of limits. As such, to continue to explore such a world would mean breaking down its mystical elements and essentially making it redundant. The best solution in such a scenario is to quit while one’s still ahead and keep the legacy of Mel Gibson, George Miller, Charlize Theron, and Tom Hardy intact.
