Top 10? Hell, the only 10! Well not quite, but damn close! We’ve actually tallied a solid list of ten horror/thrillers that happened to be set on Valentine’s Day itself. Now, some spend the entire day reveling in lovelorn lethality, some merely glance past the February 14th date, but in just about every case, old cupid’s shooting an arrow in the head, if not the heart. Ah hell, you’ve heard enough. Here’s the Top 10 Valentine’s Day Set Horror/Thrillers!
#10. Lovers Lane (1999)
Before Anna Faris was spoofing Scary MOVIEs and wooing the world as The House Bunny, she happened to stroll down Lovers Lane, a listless paint-by-numbers slasher flick about a man who went on an indiscriminate murder spree on Valentine’s Day 13 year prior, only to return to town to stalk and slash the victims’ children, foully disemboweling them with his hook-handed murder weapon. Lovers Lane...

Us comes from the mind of Oscar-winning director Jordan Peele, boasts an outstanding cast, holds several box-office records, and contains enough hidden meanings to keep us talking until Peele's Twilight Zone premiere. And yet, the elements that continue to dominate the conversation are the relatively simple, but totally creepy old-timey scissors carried by the Tethered throughout Us.
Scissors: typical tool or twisted torture device? That is the question. And it's exactly the terrifying quandary Peele invites us to explore as we follow the Wilsons on their idyllic California beach vacation. After returning home from the boardwalk, the Wilsons encounter a group of shadowy figures standing at the end of their driveway. The beings known as the Tethered are the family's duplicitous doppelgängers. Each figure wears a single leather glove, and their leader carries a golden set of shears that she wields with steely decisiveness.

While the easiest route to success post Halloween was to copy that particular formula, not everyone followed the slasher template; elements to be sure, but some films chose to borrow from their Italian brethren and dive into the giallo pool. Case in point: Schizoid (1980), an effective thriller that leans much more towards whodunit and shadowed menace.
Given a limited release by Cannon Films stateside in the fall, Schizoid was soon relegated to home video for Klaus Kinski Kinky Kompletists only and no one else, it seems. I saw it as an adolescent and took it as just an okay notch on the burgeoning horror belt; a revisit has shone a stronger light on its surprisingly potent themes of manipulation and toxic masculinity. That, and Klaus, of course.
After a quick opening scene of our heroine and reporter Julie (Marianna Hill – The Baby) working on an article in her home at night,...

Menahem Golan. For fans of 80's films the man is nothing short of a legend. It's with a truly heavy heart that we report today that his truly explosive genius is no longer with us. Read on for details, and pay tribute to the man who gave us so very much.
According to Yahoo! Movies, Golan, co-founder of The Cannon Group production company and Israeli cinema pioneer, has died. He was 85. According to multiple Israeli news outlets, Golan lost consciousness while visiting the city of Jaffa with family members in the early hours of Friday evening.
Ambulances immediately rushed to the scene, and following attempts to resuscitate him, paramedics pronounced him dead.
With cousin and partner Yoram Globus, Golan ran Cannon Films for a decade, releasing more than a dozen films a year in its prime. They bought the ailing company, which was launched in 1967, for $500,000 in 1979 and fueled an...

Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, the Israeli titans of the Cannon Film Group, had a huge business theatrically and on home video throughout the 1980’s producing lower budget films. Mainly known for their genre output, Scream Factory presents two of their offerings in a new double feature set.
Shizoid (1980) stars Klaus Kinski as a psychiatrist who runs a therapy group that is quickly losing its members to a serial murderer, while X-Ray finds Barbi Benton trapped in a hospital and stalked by a killer after a routine examination.
Schizoid (1980) plays like a TV movie of the week with a little gore in it. Julie (Marianna Hill) is a columnist for a newspaper who is receiving threatening letters while members of her support group drop like flies. Could it be her therapist, the aforementioned Kinski? A co-worker? Is it the therapist’s daughter (Donna Wilkes)? The murder mystery in Schizoid is void of suspense or interest,...

Scream Factory is just unstoppable this year, with another batch of summer Blu-ray/DVD titles in the pipe. This August, they're rolling out four more cult & horror titles: a double-feature set of obscure slasher X-Ray with the twisty giallo Schizoid; Larry Cohen's comic monster flick Q: The Winged Serpent; and alien action-thriller Dark Angel. Here's the full breakdown on each: X-Ray (aka Hospital Massacre), starring former Playboy Playmate Barbi Benton, was featured in our Be Kind, Rewind feature series, as it's previously been available only on VHS. It makes its Blu debut as half of a double-feature combo pack with Schizoid, a sleazy giallo-style thriller with legendary movie madman Klaus Kinski (as a therapist, no less!). The DVD presents both features in anamorphic widescreen (1.78:1) and Dolby Digital Stereo, and the Blu-ray in 1080p high-definition widescreen and DTS-hd master audio stereo. Bonus features on this set include an interview with Schizoid actress Donna Wilkes,...

Scream Factory has just revealed the artwork for their upcoming double-feature release of X-Ray and Schizoid.
The set is due in August, and as we get closer I am sure we will get all the deets on the special features. Scream Factory always rocks the special features.
From the Scream Factory Facebook Page: "1980's Schizoid (starring Klaus Kinski, Donna Wilkes, Christopher Lloyd and lots of scissor stabbings) is paired with 1982's X-ray (also known as Hospital Massacre and stars Barbi Benton). If you're a fan of the mad killer sub-genre from this time period, you will definitely need this double bill for sure.
"X-ray Fans Take Note: Our presentation of X-ray is the full 89 min version - which is what Hospital Massacre was released on VHS in the 80s - and not the cut version that has, apparently, existed on overseas VHS copies or some cable airings. We did our homework on this one.

At the rate Scream Factory keeps announcing new titles they’re going to singlehandedly make 2013 a very expensive year for horror fans. With Halloween days way they decided to announce three new titles: X-Ray, Schizoid, and The Godsend.
None of the three latest Scream Factory titles announced Friday have ever been released on DVD before. According to Scream Factory’s Facebook posting announcing the trio of Cannon Film horror titles that could be the only format they’re released in since they haven’t even looked at the masters yet to determine if Blu-ray releases are even feasible. Whatever format they get released in don’t expect them until well into 2013.

Shout! Factory has been announcing new movies for their Scream Factory line every week and just revealed the titles of three more cult horror movies that they will release next year:
“Cannon films X-ray (1981 – aka: Hospital Massacre with Barbi Benton), Schizoid (1980 – starring Klaus Kinski) and The Godsend (1980 – starring Donald Pleasence’s daughter, Angela) are on tap for a release late in 2013! All three have never been out on DVD before.
As mentioned yesterday, these films will not show up on our schedule until later in 2013 so we cannot confirm they will be on Blu-ray as we have not seen the masters yet. We say this only to manage expectations. More details on these fun flicks will be presented next year.”
For those who want to keep track, here’s the current list of Scream Factory titles that have been released and/or announced: Halloween II, Halloween III: Season of the Witch,...
