Sex & Nudity

  • Prolonged full frontal female nudity is shown of a young naked female coming out of a bathtub & kissing the clothed male who is watching her. Full frontal female nudity is further shown of a young naked female's body rotting.
  • There is a scene where the head chef is at his house laying in bed watching tv. On the wall above his tv, there is a portrait of a naked women. When the camera pans away and focuses on the man, above him on the wall is a second picture of a naked woman. Breasts are easily visible in both pictures.

Violence & Gore

  • Violent acts are discussed, plotted, and threatened.
  • An elevator lets out a river of blood. This image is shown several times during the course of the movie. No visible injuries are shown to any characters throughout this scene.
  • Overall not a lot of violence especially for a horror film, and the violent moments which do occur aren't especially graphic.
  • There is a scene where you see two mangled dead bodies of girls in a corridor surrounded by pools of blood, as well as an axe.
  • A man smashes down a wooden door with an axe while a woman hides with a knife in her hand. She slices his hand with the knife; blood is briefly visible.

Profanity

  • A few uses of "fuck" throught the movie.
  • One use of "son of a bitch"
  • There some uses of fuck, asshole, goddamn and hell in the movie.
  • The N-word is used in one scene.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • The protagonist orders a drink twice; in his past he had problems with alcoholism.
  • An entire room of 200+ people are smoking and drinking.
  • A woman smokes cigarettes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • This film contains disturbing depiction of madness and the effects of cabin fever. It isnt that violent or gory, but it is very terrifying.
  • The score throughout the movie is incredibly eerie and over the top creepy. It applies to the atmosphere of tension, mystery, terror and suspense that sets the tone of the film. The soundtrack is meant to be visceral, disturbing, overlapping, loud, unsettling, maniac, and sudden. The music is what also makes the film very terrifying, suspenseful & also very exciting to watch but it might give the audience a headache.
  • Due to its dark atmosphere and creepy tone, this movie gives off an uncomfortable vibe from start to finish.
  • Although not so graphic, the movie implies an intensive atmosphere in many different scenes. Very disturbing for sensitive people.
  • The film is often regarded as the scariest movie of all time.
  • In one scene, a small child is riding down the hall on a toy tricycle and sees two girls' ghosts (and then flashbacks of their bloody hacked up corpses).

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Violence & Gore

  • A man gets lost in a hedge maze and freezes to death the next morning. We see his frozen corpse the next day sitting upright with his eyes open.
  • There is a part when a guest has a bloody cut through the middle of his face

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A man is implied to have been an alcoholic
  • A man is said to have dislocated his son's shoulder upon arriving home drunk. This is referenced a few times throughout.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • While trying to chase Danny in the cold hedge maze, Jack eventually freezes and dies..
  • A man chases after his son, a young child, through a hotel with an an axe implying that he intends to kill him.
  • Jack is shown to be increasingly unpleasant and brutal towards his wife and, as he spirals into madness (pushed by the hotel's ghosts), he attempts to kill both his wife and his son.
  • Danny's mental state slowly starts to deteriorate as the film progresses. He sees several bizarre images and hallucinations. He sometimes has multiple spasms which can come off as scary. The most disturbing scenes of Danny show him constantly saying "redrum" which is murder backwards and he writes it on a door.
  • This movie has a few unexplained bizarre scenes that many people may find confusing and disturbing. Such scenes include the blood elevator, room 237 & the man in bear suit scene. Very weird and creepy.
  • A rotting naked old woman's very loud & very creepy cackling laugh is heard repeatedly for 63 seconds.
  • The Shining exchanges cheap jump scares and instead contains much surrealist and bizarre imagery, as well as a very strong sense of dread and suspense and psychological terror. We watch a man turn into an abusive father and husband, he then goes insane and tries to kill his family. This can be very disturbing to some.
