Judge Joseph Wapner, retired L.A. County Superior Court Judge and the first judge to preside over “The People’s Court,” died Sunday at age 97, TMZ reports. Wapner served on the bench in Los Angeles for twenty years before signing on to serve as the first host of “The People’s Court” in 1981. Over his twelve years on the show, he helped turn the syndicated daytime show into a cultural phenomenon, which led to the creation of other court shows like “Judge Judy” and helped established reality TV as a lucrative genre. “The People’s Court” still airs today, with Judge.

Joseph Wapner, the retired judge who literally changed television as the judge on "The People's Court," has died ... TMZ has learned. Wapner became an instant sensation when the show debuted in September, 1981. "The People's Court" was the first TV reality show, and it opened the door to many more, including a slew of TV court shows. He was opinionated, passionate and irascible as he heard thousands of cases during his 12-year run. The show became a touchpoint for pop culture.

In an effort to make jury duty fun, NBC has ordered a live, unscripted spin-off of Law & Order that promises to have viewers serve as arbiters of real cases, according to THR. Dubbed You the Jury, it'll be a one-hour prime-time show focused on civil cases, in which the audience will reportedly determine verdicts and weigh in on witnesses and evidence via interactive voting. (Think The People's Court meets the engagement portions of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire — fun?) The series, which NBC nabbed in May, comes from producers Magical Elves, Wolf Reality's Tom Thayer, and procedural titan Dick Wolf, who has left his mark on NBC with decades of material ranging from the Law & Order series to the Chicago-based series. An air date has still yet to be announced, which is great because this sounds like a lot of responsibility.

"The Silence of the Lambs" This is definitely my favorite Best Picture-winning horror movie featuring Chris Isaak in a supporting role. Let's just think about the glamor of 1991 for a minute: "Point Break" occurred. Kate Nelligan was in whatever movie she wanted. CeCe Peniston was a reigning pop star, which is important because her last name has "penis" in it. And "Silence of the Lambs" was an ominous and unconventional movie that everyone agreed was fantastic. Anthony Hopkins is in "Silence of the Lambs" for less than 20 minutes but his performance lingers far after the credits roll. Jodie Foster is charismatic and august as Clarice Starling, who is no mood for fava beans by the time the movie is over. "Rain Man" I keep pretending I'm incapable of enjoying Tom Cruise in movies anymore, yet "Rain Man" is about as timeless and likable as a 1988 drama is allowed to be.

Michelle Parker and her former fiancé Dale Smith had always had a complicated relationship. The parents of small twins, Parker and Smith had split up - but the acrimony continued. They even haggled over an engagement ring on a 2011 episode of The People's Court. On the day their People's Court episode aired, Michelle Parker dropped off her 3-year-old twins at Smith's home. She planned to run some errands in her Hummer before heading to her to her job as a bartender. She never arrived. Her Hummer was found abandoned. Three weeks later, divers found her cell phone in a nearby lake.

If you thought that Gilbert Gottfried was a great guest, you'll be falling out of your seats tonight. The one and only Jay Leno is on deck to mentor our remaining comedians, and the competition is starting to get pretty tight.
Jb Smoove starts the show by trying to bust into the judges' lounge. Russell Peters has a cup of coffee in hand, as he tries to tell Jb he's not allowed in. "Judges only," Russell recites. Jb then calls him racist, and says he's going in the room for some coffee anyway. Judge Milian from The People's Court comes out for some unexplained reason, and challenges entry once again. Roseanne also spouts out a few lines, and Jb mentions that he just wants some hot cocoa. My gosh, this is a painful and unnecessary bit.

"Dorothy Mantooth is a saint!" Wes Mantooth (Vince Vaughn) declared in "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy," protecting the honor of his mother from the vicious barbs of Champ Kind (David Koechner). But it seems Champ and Dorothy did go out for a seafood dinner after all, and it did not end well. Funny Or Die has the exclusive footage of "The People's Court" case that followed, with Judge Wapner forced to decide between Dorothy's request for $5000 in emotional damage, or Champ's countersuit for $100 for the meal. As far as "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues" promos go, this is...odd...but also sort of makes sense too. Watch below. ...

Anchorman fans may remember the scene from the original movie when David Koechner's Champ Kind insulted Wes Mantooth (Vince Vaughn) by saying he would take Wes' mother, Dorothy, out of a nice seafood dinner and never call her back. Now, we all know that Dorothy Mantooth is a saint, but we never found out if Champ actually followed through on the threat. Now we do. This new video from Funny or Die is an excerpt from an episode of "The People's Court" where Dorothy Mantooth sues...

The previews for Part 2 of "The Real Housewives of Orange County" Season 8 reunion led us to believe this would be a kinder, gentler episode than was Part 1. Wrong. The claws were out as the catfights escalated, mostly revolving, not surprisingly, around Gretchen Rossi.
Here are 10 things we learned as the women, moderated by host Andy Cohen, hashed out their drama:

Reluctantly believing she is dead, the family of Michelle Parker, the Florida mom who vanished after appearing on The People's Court in 2011, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Thursday against her ex-fiancé, Dale Smith, whom they believe was responsible. Parker's family claims Smith knows what happened on Nov. 17, 2011, the day Parker was last seen alive. "The family doesn't want to believe that Michelle is dead, but they believe that she is," their attorney, John Morgan, tells People. "This is a case that has gone cold, so a civil case is the only way that Michelle's family will finally get answers. Given the passing of time,...

Ralph Edwards, the radio and TV pioneer who created such enduring programs as This Is Your Life and Truth or Consequences, died Wednesday of heart failure at his home in West Hollywood. He was 92. Edwards died shortly after 9 a.m. Wednesday in his sleep, surrounded by family members, according to a statement issued by Ralph Edwards Prods. Edwards was well known as the host of This Is Your Life, which debuted on radio in the 1940s and moved to TV in 1952 for a nine-season run on NBC. He later hosted a syndication version from 1971-73. This month, ABC and Fox Television Studios announced plans to revive Life as a series of specials next year, this time with Regis Philbin as host. In later years, Edwards' production company was the home of the syndicated hit that launched the court show genre, The People's Court, with retired Judge Joseph Wapner presiding from 1981-93.
