I grew up in the time of the Chuck Norris joke. I didn’t even really know who he was apart from the Walker, Texas Ranger guy who Conan O’Brien would pull a lever to get just the most random, out of context clip. I remember seeing the Chuck Norris joke book in a Barnes and Noble store and leafing through it only to find a bunch of absolutely absurd and comically over the top things that Chuck Norris could and would do to you or what he kept behind his beard. It was enough for me to start looking at his overall contribution to film and much of it was action. I found him teaming up with the likes of Lee Marvin in The Delta Force or going up against the great Christopher Lee in An Eye for an Eye. There’s also a great fight he had with...

Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.

Rina Sawayama makes her acting debut in the brand-new John Wick: Chapter 4, and it sure would’ve been a waste if she hadn’t contributed to the soundtrack as well. Ahead of the film’s theatrical premiere this Friday, March 24th, the Japanese-British pop experimentalist has shared the anthem “Eye for an Eye.”
“Eye for an Eye” was produced and co-written by Tyler Bates, who’s also composed the futuristic-sounding scores for all four John Wick films. It begins with a funky, heavy-hitting synth riff that definitely feels a little reminiscent of Nine Inch Nails’ “Closer,” and the ’90s industrial vibes only get stronger from there as the instrumentals layer more and more, culminating in a pretty explosive chorus.
Lyrically, Sawayama’s narrator is on the prowl for revenge: “An eye for an eye, a life for a life/ I’ll see you in hell on the other side,...

Eliza is sleepwalking and it’s only the timely arrival of her boyfriend Roe that stops her from walking into a lake. The main theme of this year's Breda-based B-film, Underground and Trash Film Festival Butff was called "An Eye For An Eye", and it featured films about people taking the law into their own hands. Vigilante stories, rape-revenge, they were all there. And as the Scottish actress Pollyanna McIntosh was a guest of honour this year (though she unfortunately had to cancel at the last moment), one of the films in the program was Revenge Ride, in which Pollyanna plays a major part. In Revenge Ride, we see a young student get drugged and raped at a college party by some jocks. As the football team is a source of pride for the town, and she was senseless, the student doesn't go to the police as...

Running Jan. 14-Feb. 14, this year’s MyFrenchFilmFestival, an online fest organized by France’s film-tv promotional body UniFrance, will mark its 12th edition with a more diversified slate and a greater international push.
Showcasing festival gems, animated crowd-pleasers and outré genre fare – all subtitled in 15 languages – the 13 features and 17 shorts of this year’s selection will reach home viewers via 70 partner platforms as well on MyFrenchFilmFestival.com, where all the shorts will be available to screen free of charge.
Though ranging in presentational style from horror-comedy to bittersweet drama, the 10 films in this year’s feature competition often share similar thematic through lines, with nearly half of them looking at youth struggles from one angle or another. While Ludovic and Zoran Boukherma’s werewolf thriller “Teddy” tackles late teen growing pains through a more genre prism, Kamir Aïnouz’s “Honey Cigar” does so as a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age tale; when exploring young adult malaise,...

It’s a brand new month, and though it might seem like all hope is lost for 2020, at least streaming services have kept us occupied with plenty of stuff to watch. And like most platforms, Amazon Prime is dropping a ton of new movies on day one of July so that you can fill up your list and stay glued to your television. Not every flick releasing today is a winner, but you’re likely to find at least a handful of things you’re going to be dying to see.
For starters, Buried is an underrated Ryan Reynolds thriller launching on the service today, and if you can manage to sit through an hour and a half of a film that takes place entirely within a coffin, you’ll find a hell of a riveting experience. This extraordinarily tense pic tells the story of an American civilian truck driver...

As we get deeper into the summer, entertainment offerings are bound to start slimming – particularly in this pandemic era. Perhaps there’s no greater example of the oncoming drought than Amazon Prime’s list of new releases for July 2020.
Though the new options may be few and far between on Amazon this month, at least they pack a bit of a punch. In the case of Hanna season 2, that punch is quite literal. Esme Creed-Miles returns as the titular precocious super soldier. You can check out our review here. Beyond that, there are two intriguing Amazon original movies. The first is the Rosamund Pike-starring Radioactive and that arrives on July 24. Then there is the Dave Bautista film My Spy on July 26.
With HBO Max now on the scene, Amazon Prime is sure to lose some of its library titles. That can already be seen in the relatively sparse offerings for July.

Mel Novak is an action star who is best known for his performance as Stick the Assassin in Bruce Lee’s final film Game of Death (1978). Having starred in more than 60 feature films, he has given no indication that he is slowing down and following on for the success of Syndicate Smasher (2017) Mel has several new projects which are due for release soon. I got a chance to ask Mel as few questions about how he got into acting, doing his own fight scenes, stunts and whether there are any characters he like an opportunity to portray on screen again…
How did you first get into acting originally?
I had initially acted in some plays in school and a couple in local theatres. In La, I got a job with an insurance company as a bodily injury claims adjuster. It was there that I met a gal that set up...

Vida Ghaffari is an award-winning actress and voiceover artist who is best known for her appearances on the television comedies, Mind of Mencia on Comedy Central, Jimmy Kimmel Live on ABC and The Mindy Project formerly on Fox. However, after completing a supporting role in Nation’s Fire and the much buzzed about Holy Terror she is really starting to make an impact and recently won the Trailblazer Award at the Universe Multicultural Film Festival (pictured below).
I got an opportunity to ask Vida a few questions about how she got into acting and voiceover work, working with Mel Novak and her various upcoming projects which she is working on.
How did you first get into acting and voiceover work?
I actually got my start as a reporter for an international satellite Persian TV station. I voiced their promos in English and Farsi and then put together my first demos from that.

Action movie vet Mel Novak (Samurai Cop 2, An Eye For an Eye) has completed work on his latest film, the supernatural thriller When It Rings.
For the first time since the death of his sister, Zach (Martin) returns to his childhood home to get it ready for sale. While there, he uncovers an old toy phone he once used to “talk” to his dead sister. Years of counseling convinced him it was all in his head until an unexpected call comes through the plastic phone, setting off a series of terrifying events, and making him question what, and who, is real.
Novak, whose many credits also include Game of Death, Holy Terror and the upcoming Steve McQueen: American Icon, joins Golden Globe Winner Sally Kirkland and newcomer Gonzalo Martin in the film – which is directed by Ty Haisten and David Rivers – whose short film “Chatter,” inspired this movie.

On Monday, August 28, 2017, Turner Classic Movies will devote an entire day of their “Summer Under the Stars” series to the late, great Louis Burton Lindley Jr. If that name doesn’t sound familiar, well, then just picture the fella riding the bomb like a buckin’ bronco at the end of Dr. Strangelove…, or the racist taskmaster heading up the railroad gang in Blazing Saddles, or the doomed Sheriff Baker, who gets one of the loveliest, most heartbreaking sendoffs in movie history in Sam Peckinpah’s Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid.
Lindley joined the rodeo circuit when he was 13 and soon picked up the name that would follow him throughout the length of his professional career, in rodeo and in movies & TV. One of the rodeo vets got a look at the lank newcomer and told him, “Slim pickin’s. That’s all you’re gonna get in this rodeo.

“An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind” may be something of a cliché, but especially in these toxic and vindictive times, its a truism of divided tribalism that is leading civilization to ruin. Intentional commentary on modern culture or not, Matt Reeves, the thoughtful director behind “War For The Planet Of The Apes,” explores the tragic cycles of violence with gripping results. It’s glib to say it, but let’s get it out of the way: audiences eagerly awaiting “The Batman” should feel excited — Reeves is the rare blockbuster filmmaker that can creates epic scale without abandoning the intimacy of characters and relationships.

The franchising of the very popular Keanu Reeves-starring puppy-centric actioner “John Wick” continues apace, with a much-hyped sequel on the way early next year, buzzing rumors that studio Lionsgate is already prepping a third film in the series and a brand new virtual reality video game in the works. That game — a first person shooter called “John Wick Chronicles” from Starbreeze — hit up New York’s Comic-Con this weekend, revealing an early look at what players can expect when it arrives in February (just in time for “John Wick: Chapter Two”!).
The character of John Wick has already dabbled in the video game world, thanks to an introduction in Starbreeze’s own 2013 game “Payday 2,” and “John Wick Chronicles” looks to only further expand out that little nugget in terms of both style of game play and actual storytelling. At Comic-Con, Starbreeze and Lionsgate offered up an immersive preview,...

With Jean-Claude Van Damme hitting the big screen this month in Kickboxer: Vengeance (a remake of his 1989 smash hit) we decided to find out who is the greatest of the legendary Eighties action heroes. Who kicked hardest, fought longest and has the staying power to be the last man standing? Let the fight begin!
Sylvester Stallone
Evidence: Sylvester Stallone is not only an enduring action star of note – from Rambo and Rocky, Cobra to Cliffhanger, right through to The Expendables, Sly has always set the box office cash tills ringing; but he is also an Oscar-nominated writer, a director, and even a painter. There is, it seems, very little he cannot do.
Verdict: Stallone is more rennaisance man than action hero king.
Dolph Lundgren
Evidence: At 6ft 5 and built like a Sherman tank, Swedish powerhouse Lundgren has taken on James Bond and Rocky, played The Punisher, a Universal Soldier and was one of The Expendables.

After three days of consecutive, fatal shootings; the latest being in Dallas where 11 police officers were shot – four of which died – celebrities have been taking to Twitter to voice their concerns.
Singer John Legend, who frequently speaks uses his Twitter account to speak out on social injustices, called the shootings, which occurred during a peaceful Black Lives Matter protest on Thursday night, "counterproductive."
"These Dallas shootings are horrific. Killing these officers is morally reprehensible and completely counterproductive to keeping us safe," he wrote, adding in another tweet, "Being against cops killing is not equal to being for killing cops. We need peace in our streets.

We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in October 2018.
Happy Huluween!
Hulu is blessed to have a name that sounds roughly enough like "Hallow." That means it's basically honor-bound to bring the heat for Halloween. Thankfully for the October 2018 new releases, Hulu is bringing us the spookies that we need. The Blair Witch Project, The Others, and Child's Play all arrive this month. And if you're looking for some more wholesome creepies, The Nightmare Before Christmas should do. And if that weren't enough, Hulu is debuting its own horror show - anthology series Into the Dark.
For those shamefully unable to get into the Halloween spirit, Hulu is bringing in some other fun film options. Galaxy Quest, Music and Lyrics, and Ace Ventura: Pet Detective should help out with that.
Then of course, are the usual and typically deep TV offerings.

No, I didn’t spell that wrong. I just think all Americans should have the right to a free pair of bear arms. For protection. Or something. Ok, I lied. I just like to be coy with my titles. But, as always, I digress.
A while back, in response to the “Religious Freedom and Restoration Act,” I’d likened the right-wing penned law as being worthy of super villainy. Now, I find myself once again questioning how the Grand Old Party has now become the party of Ultron, Lex Luthor, and Dr. Ben Carson.
Somewhere between Donald Trump desiring to build a wall to protect us from Mexican rapists, Carly Fiorina proclaiming Planned Parenthood as a secret fetus-selling black market, and Jeb Bush basically aping a parody of his own brother a la Aaron Sorkin (no, seriously), it’s sad that Dr. Carson’s recent verbal pile-ups haven’t awaken new ire in me,...

Teenage Wasteland: Ellis & Martini Join Forces for Derivative Teen Angst
Check your expectations at the opening credits with The Curse of Downers Grove, a muddled teen scream mix of urban legend meets self-fulfilling prophecy metaphor. Many will be unable to bypass taking a look, however, upon learning the schlocky titled genre effort was penned by Bret Easton Ellis, his first cinematic project following the infamous and ultimately ill-fated Paul Schrader/Lindsey Lohan experiment The Canyons (2013). An ambitious thread of something greater sometimes resonates in this adolescent angst tale spiked with violence and a smattering of watered down sexuality (at least compared to what we know Ellis can imagine), but is ultimately lost in the tonally awkward jumps between genre elements and out-of-touch flourishes as concerns law-enforcement and teenagers.

She’s ‘Not That Kind of Girl.’ But she is a great teacher.
Lena Dunahm’s book, Not That Kind of Girl, is out now! So look at this post in one of two ways: 1) A sampling of what kind of advice you might expect to find in her book (where Lena is willing and able to give it!). Or 2) If you can’t afford the book, the best you’re going to get for free. Pony up if you want the in-depth stuff!
1. The importance of a good night’s sleep.
When I was little I used to get myself to bed by imagining a situation where someone said "fall asleep in five minutes or I'll murder you."
— Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) December 12, 2012
2. Too much of a good thing can also be bad.
Hell hath no fury like a woman who has accidentally napped.
— Lena Dunham (@lenadunham) August 7, 2012
