James M. Cain’s 1941 novel Mildred Pierce offers a venal and self-destructive view of America not with a story of respectable bourgeois society, not the criminal underworld. A de-classed, suburb-dwelling nobody fights her way onto the social register by using men and by hard work… and then watches as her obsessive goals blow up in her face In Cain’s worldview it’s every woman for herself. He drags in an odd personal theme,...

Read More: Discover the Brothers Quay, Identical Twin Animators Who Inspired Christopher Nolan, on New Blu-Ray
These four films and their synopses are as follows:
“Rehearsals For Extinct Anatomies” (7/26): Oscillating hands each hold a pen; a man made of wire has a malevolent look and an oscillating eye as he pokes at a bump on his forehead. Op-art stripes are in the fabric. Lines become jumbles that become balls that oscillate, bounce, or stay suspended in air. “The Combs” (7/27): A woman dreams of a fairytale landscape populated by ladders and sinister puppets. “Anamorphosis” (7/28): An exploration of the optical phenomenon of anamorphosis, whereby the eye can perceive images differently if viewed at an appropriate angle.

How would you program this year's newest, most interesting films into double features with movies of the past you saw in 2015?Looking back over the year at what films moved and impressed us, it is clear that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, the annual tradition of our end of year poll, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2015—in theatres or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2015 to create a unique double feature. All the contributors were given the option to write some text explaining their 2015 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative film programming we'd be lucky to catch...

Hello again, dear readers. I’m guessing a lot of you got out to see Jurassic World this past weekend, considering how much money it made, and I hope that you enjoyed it as much as I did. And as the summer movie season continues, the Trailer Trashin’ column is back from its recent absence, with a look at the international trailer for director Werner Herzog’s new film Queen of the Desert.
Premise: A chronicle of the life of Gertrude Bell (Nicole Kidman), an English traveler, writer, archeologist, explorer, cartographer, and political attaché for the British Empire at the dawn of the twentieth century.
My take: German filmmaker Werner Herzog is a fascinating figure in every sense of the word. He has directed dozens of films, both fictional stories and documentaries, and established a style unlike that of anyone else in cinema. In the process, he has gone all...

The BBC's coverage of the raid on Sir Cliff Richard's house has been nominated for Scoop of the Year at the Royal Television Society Television Journalism Awards 2013/14.
The singer's home was searched by South Yorkshire Police in August following allegations of historical sex abuse - claims that have been described as as "completely false" by Richard.
Both the BBC and South Yorkshire Police were criticised over the coverage, prompting a Home Affairs Select Committee inquiry. The report stated that police should not have cooperated with the BBC after a journalist discovered information about the search.
The coverage is up against Panorama's Fake Sheikh Exposed documentary, along with BBC Northern Ireland's A Woman Alone With The Ira.
The Panorama special centred around Mazher Mahmood, who had exposed various individuals in the tabloids while posing as a fake sheikh. The documentary arrived after he was accused of "serious misconduct...

A woman alone at home hears a noise in the other room and goes to investigate. She finds a window open that she thought she had closed and soon discovers why — an intruder is in the house and armed with a knife and malicious intent. But as she’s races in fear from one room to the next another man becomes visible to us while she runs right past him. What the what? John Washington (Mark Strong) is a memory detective. With a combination of hand-holding and a little bit of coaxing he can enter a person’s memories, whether they be formative or traumatic, and while he can’t interact with them his observations reveal information that can be used later in therapy or criminal trials. It’s a good gig if you can get it, but John is forced onto sabbatical after his latest trip down someone else’s memory lane finds his own recollections...

Looking back at 2011 on what films moved and impressed us it becomes more and more clear—to me at least—that watching old films is a crucial part of making new films meaningful. Thus, our end of year poll, now an annual tradition, which calls upon our writers to pick both a new and an old film: they were challenged to choose a new film they saw in 2011—in theaters or at a festival—and creatively pair it with an old film they also saw in 2011 to create a unique double feature. Many contributors chose their favorites of 2011, some picked out-of-the-way gems, others made some pretty strange connections—and some frankly just want to create a kerfuffle. All the contributors were asked to write a paragraph explaining their 2011 fantasy double feature. What's more, each writer was given the option to list more pairings, with or without explanation, as further imaginative...
