Up to 100 Hungarian animators needed more than five years to complete the animation sequences for all 52 episodes.

Prior to being made into a TV series, the books had been adapted as audio plays, which were widely available on vinyl and cassette tapes and very popular in German speaking countries. Most of the voice actors from these recordings played the same part in the TV series and film.
While the character Pumuckl was created by Ellis Kaut, the character design was done by Barbara von Johnson in 1963. This was subject to various law suits, but in the end von Johnson prevailed and she is now properly credited for her character design in the opening credits of the show.
