The dystopian sci-fi film "Logan's Run" is set in a supposedly idyllic future society where residents above 30 mysteriously disappear. The hedonistic metropolis is enclosed by a dome, and those who choose to explore the world outside — and the secrets that it holds — are labeled "runners." Michael York stars in the film as the titular protagonist, an undercover police officer who infiltrates the runners only to find that he, too, opposes the laws that he once worked to uphold and helps them lead an uprising.
"Logan's Run" was nominated for its cinematography and set decoration in the 1977 Academy Awards. It even received a special achievement award for its visual effects. The futuristic set and costume design were almost identical to the smash-hit sci-fi adventure film "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," which was released the following year. It's possible that "Star Wars" even drew inspiration from the 1976 film. However,...

Donald Trump announced his next piece of memorabilia last week, this time coming in the form of golden sneakers, priced at almost $400. And though “The View” hosts were gobsmacked at the price, Joy Behar did guess at one perk of the shoes.
“Well, maybe his supporters who buy them will be able to run faster from the Capitol Police in these sneakers,” she joked.
The shoes came up as part of the first Hot Topic of the day, in which the women discussed how Trump was ordered to pay $355 million in the verdict of his New York civil fraud trial. But, looking at the footwear, host Sunny Hostin couldn’t help but notice that they looked awful familiar.

Things once again got physical in Congress this week, so “The Daily Show” decided to report straight from the middle of the action on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for correspondent Desi Lydic, that meant some torn clothes and a clear black eye, because you “can’t report on congressional fight club without joining it.”
Before Lydic entered the scene though, guest host Leslie Jones shamed the near-brawls, and specifically called out Kevin McCarthy, who purportedly elbowed a Republican congressman who voted him out in the kidneys.
“Oh my God, you guys are such children. You act like 5-year-olds, this is insane,” Jones scolded. “Listen, I know what it’s like to want to fight a co-worker. But don’t do that at work! You wait for them in the parking lot like a responsible adult!”
From there, Jones handed things over to Lydic, reporting from the halls of the Capitol. But the moment she appeared on-screen,...

Copycat movies have been a thing forever. You can look at the broader scope and consider that most slasher movies became copycat in one way or another. A supernatural killer, excessive gore and nudity, and even the high body counts. That style of horror movies could become a dime a dozen. Twin films are similar, but they are made at roughly the same time and actually trying to release first to beat the other to market so as to not be seen as an attempted clone of the other studios idea. Boiling it down even further, some copycats go beyond just the themes and even try to take direct elements from the previous movie that made money.

“Morning Joe” slammed the GOP’s “deeply unserious” calls for a red state secession, calling it a money-making ploy to appeal to far-right donors.
On Monday morning, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) tweeted that “We need a national divorce. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government,” drawing furious responses from the left and more moderate right.
“This is so laughable because blue states as we all know are the donor states, or the states where taxpayers take it on the chin to take care of districts like Marjorie Taylor Greene’s, to take care of districts across taxes where Ted Cruz talks about secession,” host Joe Scarborough said on Tuesday’s episode of “Morning Joe.”
“What is it that so deeply offends [Republicans], like three trans athletes in Utah want to swim? Is that real?” he asked guest commentator Charlie Sykes.

One year after the fact, the uprising that took place, before millions of horrified and amazed eyes, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021 — a protest, an insurrection, a riot, an act of mass vandalism, a piece of made-for-the-media guerrilla theater, and a primal assault on democracy — looks, if anything, even scarier now than it did then.
A group of anarchists posing as freedom fighters, busting into the Capitol, threatening and committing violence, taking cues (one almost wants to say orders) from on high — that is, from the President of the United States. However ramshackle it may have been in execution, this was an attempted coup, and the meaning of it should never be far from our minds. The reason you could say it’s scarier now is that the riot, at the time, was contained; it was a slipshod coup that failed. But with a year of hindsight,...

Lt. Michael Byrd, the U.S. Capitol Police officer who shot and killed Ashli Babbitt during the Jan. 6 insurrection, is telling his side of the story.
Byrd sat down with NBC’s Lester Holt for a revealing interview that aired on the network on Thursday. In it, he recounted the events of the fateful day a horde of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol and opened up about the fallout he’s faced afterward.
Byrd said that the shot he fired at Babbitt’s shoulder was the first in his 28 years as an officer.
“I spent countless years preparing for such a moment. You ultimately hope that moment never occurs but you prepare as best you can,” he told Holt. “I know that day, I saved countless lives. I know members of Congress, as well as my fellow officers and staff, were in jeopardy and in serious danger and that’s my job.

Twin screenwriters Aaron and Jordan Kandell have sold an original comedy pitch to Robert Zemeckis’ production company ImageMovers. The project is in early discussions with Apple Studios as a distribution partner, sources said.
Zemeckis will develop and produce the film, titled “Mr. Lucky,” which sources compared to emotional and comedic romps like “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”
The film, inspired by a true story, is described as a high concept rom-com that explores luck, and how tragedy and triumph, disaster and fortune are all in the way we choose to view them. Jack Rapke and Jackie Levine are producing for ImageMovers.
The Kandells, who just signed with Range Media Partners, are the writers behind the Oscar-nominated Disney pic “Moana” and the 2018 film “Adrift,” starring Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin. They have a number of notable upcoming projects through their banner Twin Ink.

Warning: This interview contains minor spoilers about tonight’s first episode of Disney+/Marvel’s The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
Dropping at midnight, the Kari Skogland directed Disney+/Marvel series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier opener picks up not long after the events of 2019’s Avengers: Endgame blockbuster with the world and its superheroes trying to come to terms with the reemergence of billions of people who mega villain Thanos had seemingly killed in Avengers: Infinity War. Specifically, the less than one hour first episode profiles Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier trying to move on with their lives following the loss of Captain America and its ramifications for them and the nation. While Captain America has left the shield for Wilson to take up, he finds it rather heavy initially compared to the flair of his wings. More on that...

We’re eight days into 2021 — that seems like a reasonable length of time to crown the highest-rated entertainment series of the year. Ok, so of course it’s not, but let’s have a little fun anyway. Setting aside football — which dominates the airwaves — we’ve got a few contenders for the top spot among adults 18-49, which is the group that most advertisers target via TV commercials. Also Read: Ratings: 'The Masked Dancer' Episode 2 Tanks vs Capitol Coverage On Sunday, Mayim Bialik’s new Fox comedy “Call Me Kat” initially debuted to a 1.3 rating among adults under 50, according to Nielsen’s first wave of the night’s Live + Same Day numbers. Those are not time zone-adjusted, however. The “Call Me Kat” series premiere, which was buoyed by its NFL lead-in, grew to a 1.4 rating in final numbers — making it the top-performing entertainment episode of the (very) new year.

Three new series debuted on broadcast TV last night — that is, so long as you count “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune” as a new show. The best of the bunch, ratings-wise, was “Celebrity Wheel of Fortune,” which led into “The Chase.” Both ABC game shows left Ted Danson’s “Mr. Mayor” in the dust. The “Mr. Mayor” start was not a disaster, though — Tina Fey and Robert Carlock’s new sitcom was NBC’s top comedy launch in terms of total viewers since 2017. It’s likely “Mr. Mayor” will be more competition for the ABC game shows — and and possibly surpass them — when delayed viewing is tallied. ABC won Thursday’s primetime outright. Fox was second in the key demo and NBC finished third. All of that said, CBS (essentially) aired only reruns last night and ended up in a ratings tie among adults 18-49 with Spanish-language broadcast network Univision. Fox’s new Mayim Bialik sitcom,...

She was 83.

She was a part of the cast right up until the show was canceled.

ABC got some soap fans’ hopes up when they teased the possibility that cancelled shows “All My Children” and “One Life to Live” could get a second life — or third life, if you count their short-lived online revivals in 2013. When Australian singer Troye Sivan first set out to be a pop star as a young teen, he had two potential hurdles in front of him: distance and his sexuality (Sivan came out at the age of 18). But thanks to YouTube, where he first gained attention with a series of viral videos, and an embracing audience, Sivan’s 2015 debut, “Blue Neighborhood,” cracked the top 10 of the U.S. album charts and paved the way for an elaborate build-up to his sophomore album, “Bloom” — which Capitol will release on August 31 — including an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” and duets with famous fans like Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande. Sivan also has acting chops. He portrayed a young version of the titular character in the 2009 film “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” and costars with Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe and Lucas Hedges in Focus Features’ Oscar bait, “Boy Erased.” If there was any doubt, the...

There’s a theory dubbed “nominative determinism,” a fancy name to describe people who gravitate to jobs that fit their names. You could hardly find a better example than the man who has sat alongside a mixing console and vinyl lathe in one of the basement studios in the Capitol Records tower for more than three decades.
“What better name for a mastering engineer than… Ron McMaster!” says Ben Blackwell, the co-founder of Third Man Records, who has worked with the veteran on several projects. “Look up his credit on the Demolition Doll Rods’ first album — it’s my favorite listing on a record ever.” A quick scan of the credits reveals the listing burned into Blackwell’s memory: “Masterfully Mastered by the Master at Tower Mastering — Ron McMaster.”
