Great and bitter Polish movie abort con-artists
Maziun11 August 2013
Some people might see similarities between this movie "Wielki Szu" – "Big Shar" and Martin Scorsese's "The Color of money " . I want to say that Scorsese's movie is a remake of movie from the 60's ("The Hustler") and is no way a rip-off of "Wielki Szu" ("Big Shar").

Anyway , this is a great movie . Jan Nowicki shines in the title role . His character is burned out , charming , sad , bitter , gentleman who looks for a place in his life . He lost his home once and now is searching for … something . He sees the whole life as a highway , where all the drivers are trying to kill each other . He wants to end with his profession , but unfortunately nothing is easy in life. Soon he becomes tempted by other people to keep on going as a con artist . One taxi driver (great Andrzej Pieczynski) begs him to teach him playing cards and become his mentor . Szu agrees and quickly their fates become intertwined to the very end.

The overall tone of the movie is sad , bitter and grim . It will make you think what in life is really important and it might change your look at other people . I give it 8/10.

Movie about con-man, card player and his student, magnificent performance by Jan Nowicki.

This film is about con-man, great cheater, card player who was making big money, living in most expensive hotels in Poland during 80's. Intriguing plot, good acting. Jan Nowicki, known Polish actor, is great. I think, his best performance until this time. I see similarity to USA movie "Color of Money" from 1986. Well, "Wielki Szu" was made in 1982 !?!?
