Sex & Nudity

  • There is a lot of sexual conversation and "Men's Lust" is one of the main topics of the film.
  • Young Garp and Cushie play at being married and sexual imitation is implied.
  • Jenny describes how an injured soldier, who is brain damaged and near death, has a virtually-permanent erection, and she used his condition to conceive Garp by climbing on top of him. This is discussed openly and a man accuses her of rape when told.
  • A sex scene between Garp and Cushie; breasts are displayed and implied fellatio, there is also talk of a condom being referred to as a "glove".
  • A girl in a magazine center picture (breasts displaying, genitals obscurred) is seen by boys with a flashlight.
  • Jenny threatens to put a virus in a pre-teen boy's jockstrap, so he will "have nothing left" if he does a certain thing again.
  • There is a locker room scene in which many naked boys are shown walking around (they all seem in their mid-to-late teens, they are shown from behind or covered in towels from the front. Two guy's genitals and pubic hairs are briefly visible).

Violence & Gore

  • Garp almost falls from a rooftop as a young boy, (his mother saves him) and kicks away the gutter in the process, the gutter falls on the Dean's head in turn causing a slight forehead wound.
  • A boy gets his penis caught in his pants zipper. Not shown, but he is seen crying and clutching himself. The nurse (Garp's mother, Jenny) unzips the pants roughly and he is heard to scream.
  • A man tries to commit suicide, but instead he jumps onto a big cushion the firemen put out. However a piano then comes and crashes on him.
  • A dog bites a part of Garp's ear off, we see some blood. Garp bites the dog's ear off later on, we see some blood
  • We see an animation involving a father and son fighting Nazis in the war. There is gun in the drawing and a swastika seen.
  • There is an assassination attempt on Jenny's life, blood is seen.
  • Roberta tackles a man and later punches a woman.
  • Garp angrily smashes up a man's truck with a baseball bat. He and Roberta are subsequently chased by the man driving wildly.

Profanity

  • A few scattered F-words and some other profanities are uttered. Derogatory terms (i.e. "dyke") are used. The term "bastard" is used in the sense of an unmarried woman having a child. SOB is used several times.
  • Garp is referred to as "the bastard son of Jenny Fields".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Helen and a few other characters smoke cigarettes.
  • Some characters drink alcohol including a scene where Helen drinks champagne with a "gradual student".

  • Garp cheats on Helen in a car with the babysitter and sex is implied yet not shown.
  • Helen cheats on Garp with one of her "gradual" students.

  • Garp accidentally drives his car into the back of a car, in which Helen is performing fellatio on a student. It is revealed that she bit off his penis (not shown). Their children were also in Garp's car and one of them is killed in the crash (not shown).
  • Jenny is shot by a sniper; some blood is seen.
  • Pooh shoots Garp point-blank in the chest three times; some blood is seen

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The scenes where Jenny and Garp are shot are frightening, but not overly intense.
