Oliver Stone's "Platoon" had a long road to the screen, and when it finally got made, it was only after a couple of false starts. Stone began writing about his experiences in the United States Army as soon as he came back from Vietnam in 1968, but his initial attempt at channeling them into a semi-autobiographical narrative yielded a different screenplay called "Break," according to the book "Oliver Stone: The Making of His Movies." It is this script Stone would later redevelop and rewrite into the one that became "Platoon."

It doesn’t get greener than this: On Thursday, Fkj (multi-instrumentalist French Kiwi Juice) released his single “Greener,” and it features the iconic guitar strums of Carlos Santana. Its video follows Fkj’s Vincent Fenton singing among trees and nature, matching the song’s title.
“You think you’ll like it/You say it’s your thing/Wait until you open it (greener, greener),” sings Fenton. “The gift that everybody wants (greener, greener)/Sorry, I must say you’re wrong/’Cause it’s always greener on the other side.”

Jim Carrey hinted in an interview in support of “Sonic the Hedgehog 2” that he’s strongly thinking about “retiring” and suggested that he’ll be “taking a break” from acting.
Carrey, who is no stranger to giving some surprisingly serious, candid and even existential interviews these past few years, said that he’s quite content with his other life and career doing painting and spending time with his family. And he had a direct answer when he was asked Thursday if he would be interested in working with Dolly Parton on a biopic.
“Well I’m retiring. Probably,” Carrey told Access. “I’m being fairly serious, yeah. It depends, it depends if the angels bring some sort of script that’s written in gold ink that is going to be really important for people to see, then I might continue down the road, but I’m taking a break.

Halo this Thursday leaped from your TV screen to… well, that same TV screen, as Paramount+ premiered a series inspired by the globally popular video game franchise. At first blush, does this live-action Master Chief hit the target?
Halo‘s series premiere kicks off on Madrigal, an outer colony planet doubling as a rebel outpost. The episode opens with some important table-setting: a group of dirty, tired-looking warriors gathers around a table, playing cards and fueling the legends of fighters known as Spartans. The focus then shifts to General Jin Ha (played by Rookie Historian‘s Jeong-hwan Kong), who is...

Stranger Things Day is here, and that means lots of creepy goodness coming your way. November 6 is not the drop date of the show's highly anticipated fourth season, but the day does bring new announcements and fan-friendly goodies to anticipate the next season of Netflix's hit science fiction series. On their official Twitter page, the show has encouraged participation in the form of "waffle parties," binge-watching parties, and character cosplay, perhaps in an effort to engineer Star Wars Day levels of franchise hype. The date also has canonical significance. The show's first episode, "The Disappearance of Will Byers," is set on November...

While Marvel explores their own slew of “What If…?” scenarios on Disney+, NBC is beginning a similar journey with the series premiere of “Ordinary Joe.” But for the show’s protagonist, and showrunners Garrett Lerner and Russel Friend, the important message is that really, any choice can be the right one.
“It’s a love letter to indecisiveness,” showrunner Garrett Lerner told TheWrap. “That is the theme of the show: whatever choice you make, wherever you end up, that is where you’re supposed to be. That is the right answer. It’s not meant to be cliched, but it’s, you know, some people could call that fate. Some people could call that self determinism. After more than a year, Billions will return for the second half of its fifth season without skipping a beat, Showtime boss Gary Levine shared during the premium network’s TCA session on Tuesday.
The drama, starring Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis will return for the second half of Season 5 on September 5, with Season 6 following shortly in January. Levine said that despite the year-long break, audiences can jump right back in – the same way actors did amid the Covid-19 pandmeic.
“We did make a few adjustments in shooting the last five episodes post-pandemic to allow for shooting in a pandemic,” he said. “Story-wise, we stayed true to the original plan. Having seen those five episodes they come back just shot out of a cannon and you are immediately thrown back into the story — no need to review the earlier episodes.”

Maya Rudolph, who has regularly played Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday Night Live, is back in New York hosting the NBC comedy.
However, despite this, Lorne Michaels’ long-running comedy eschewed a sketch with Rudolph as Harris and instead chose to have her hosting an MTV-style Spring Break skit.
It marks the first time that Saturday Night Live hasn’t had a political cold open in a long time, given Joe Biden’s recent inauguration and the turbulent electoral situation.
Rudolph played Cece Vuvuzela, hosting a Singled Out-style gameshow, where three contestants had to guess whether the single girls were “snatched, vaxxed or waxed”.
Chris Redd, Beck Bennett and Kyle Mooney starred alongside Rudolph with Chloe Fineman, Ego Nwodim and Heidi Gardner as the single ladies.

Ronnee Sass, a veteran entertainment executive known for her upbeat personality and masterful publicity campaigns for Warner Bros. and other studios, died on March 20 in Los Angeles. She was 72.

"What's the point in having talent if you keep it for yourself." Conduit Presents has released an official US trailer for a film titled The Break, also known as just Break when it was first released in the UK last year. An inner-city kid and gifted pool player named Spencer, wasting his talents on crime, gets in over his head until a chance encounter with a stranger presents him with an opportunity to turn his life around. But is it too late? He'll only succeed if he can break away from his biggest problem: himself. The Break stars Sam Gittins, Rutger Hauer, Jamie Foreman, David Yip, Adam Deacon, and Luke Mably. This is a very strange trailer, but perhaps there's something worthwhile in this. Not often we get billiards films anymore. Here's the official US trailer (+ new poster) for Michael Elkin's The Break, direct from YouTube: Spencer (Sam Gittins), a gifted pool player,...

Los Angeles-based Dark Star Pictures has acquired the North American distribution rights to the festival midnighter Dementia Part II as part of their exciting collaboration with horror leader Bloody Disgusting, the companies announced Monday morning.
Taken from the pages of Sam Raimi, and delivering absurd gross-out humor and nonstop mayhem, the making of Dementia Part II came out of a dare from Chicago’s Cinepocalype Film Festival and the movie’s producers Jd Lifshitz and Raphael Margules. The two must produce a feature-length midnight movie from concept to finished product in one month so that it could make its World Premiere on the last night of the film festival. As this past week was the first week of December, Netflix got things rolling with the usual glut of new titles. It’s easy to miss everything that went up on the streaming giant over the past seven days, so we’ve compiled a handy recap of every single movie and TV show that dropped from Monday, November 30th to Sunday, December 6th. In total, that’s 58 new additions.
The 1st obviously delivered the bulk of the haul, serving up a ton of fresh films to keep you entertained as we begin the festive season. Among the highlights was the original Jurassic Park and one of its sequels and if you missed them at the beginning of the week, you can also catch the likes of romcom 50 First Dates, animated film Monster House and the one and only E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. As for TV shows, all of Stargate was likewise added the same day.

A lot of people are in agreement that Die Hard is the single greatest action movie ever made, but if you had everyone with an opinion compile a Top 10, then 99% of them would probably feature Speed.
Jan de Bont’s high concept masterpiece is as watchable now as it was when it first hit theaters in 1994, and remains a masterclass in taking a simple pitch and wringing every last drop of tension out of the premise, lacing the entire story with a barrage of spectacular action sequences for good measure, all held together by three excellent performances from Keanu Reeves, Sandra Bullock and Dennis Hopper.
Reeves was smart enough to turn down the sequel, though, which was savaged by critics and bombed spectacularly. And at this stage, the most likely chance of seeing the property back on the big screen would be via a remake, but insider Daniel Richtman claims...

For starters, Netflix is ending this most curious year with some promising original films. David Fincher’s long-awaited Mank arrives on Dec. 4 to fill us in on the story of Citizen Kane‘s screenwriter. Then on Dec. 11, Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman, and James Corden do their best musical impression with The Prom. Chadwick Boseman’s final film Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom debuts on Dec. 18. Then George Clooney rounds out the month with The Midnight Sky on Dec. 23.
But of course, it’s in the original series realm where Netflix does most of its work. The biggest one comes at month’s end this December. The final season of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina premieres on New Year’s Eve.

As you can see down below, it promises that a number of exciting original releases are on their way. Many of these are some of the most-anticipated titles of the year as well, meaning Netflix has truly saved the best for last.

It has begun. The steady trickle of films about Labradors who save Christmas, American girls marrying European princes, and parents learning that their kids are more important than their jobs, is with us. Netflix is responsible for a good proportion of the above, with several new festive titles arriving over the next few weeks.
If that does nothing for you, then you might be more interested in the arrival of three non-tinsel films on the service this month. There’s David Fincher’s Mank streaming from December 4th, followed on the 18th by Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, featuring the much-missed Chadwick Boseman, with George Clooney-starring The Midnight Sky landing a couple of days before Christmas on the 23rd.
TV-wise, there’s a new season of animated comedy Big Mouth on December 4th, the debut of slick-looking Shondaland period drama Bridgerton on the 25th, and right at the end of the month,...

Though we’re now beginning to see life starting to return to at least some sense of normality, a lot of people are still spending much more time at home than usual thanks to the Coronavirus pandemic, and that probably won’t change for a while yet. As such, streaming services are more popular than ever now and thankfully, all of the major players have been delivering the goods when it comes to adding new content.
Of course, Netflix are still the leaders and each and every month they bring us a healthy helping of fresh material that ensures subscribers are kept entertained at all times. Admittedly, the summer was more fruitful in terms of new releases, but there are still a lot of great titles coming down the pipeline as we head into the fall and today, the streaming giant have revealed their November lineup, which you can check out below.

Netflix have been facing the wrath of their subscribers recently after canceling I Am Not Okay With This and The Society after just one season, despite originally renewing both for a second run. Fans instantly went online to criticize the streaming service for their decision and launch petitions to try and bring them back, but there’s no chance that the company will change their mind.
Having pledged to spend almost $20 billion on original content this year alone, the financial effects that the Coronavirus pandemic is wreaking on the global economy will force Netflix to tighten their belt, which is also reportedly one of the major reasons why expensive sci-fi series Altered Carbon was canned as well.

Ralph Tresvant is nearly overwhelmed by the strength of his affections on new single “All Mine.” For added firepower, the singer recruits his old group-mate Johnny Gill, who attacks the backing vocalist role with his characteristic intensity.
“All Mine” is co-written and produced by Gregg Pagani, who also has credits on overlooked gems like New Edition’s “This One’s For Me and You” and Charlie Wilson’s “There Goes My Baby.” While those were cheerfully mid-tempo, Tresvant’s latest single is a low-and-slow ballad, full of plush keys and light snaps.

If you watched an action, sci-fi, or horror movie in the 1980s, there was a good chance it was produced by Cannon Films. The studio — perhaps the last great home of B-movie and exploitation classics — was founded in 1967 but hit its apex between 1979 and 1987, releasing scores of films that (mostly) no one would call high cinema but which delivered thrills, chills and plenty of blood, action, and fire on a budget.
Tapping into the massive market for both high and low concept fare — the 1980s equivalent of drive-in double bill fillers — Cannon, under the leadership of Israeli cousins Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, were perhaps best known for churning out chintzy crowdpleasers like the Chuck Norris-starring Missing in Action and The Delta Force along with a slew of Death Wish sequels.
But the company also produced titillating titles like Lady Chatterley’s Lover, slasher fare such as Schizoid and New Year’s Evil,...

Cannon Films, the iconic independent film studio of the 1970s and 1980s which essentially continued the careers of the likes of Charles Bronson and Chuck Norris through and after their prime, are back - more than twenty years after shutting their doors.

★★★☆☆ Aside from a couple of exceptions, Cannon Films' Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus may not be remembered in the annals of film history as purveyors of quality cinema, but they certainly showed a skill for spotting and quickly capitalising on growing social trends. This is the duo who reaped vast box office rewards by bringing the breakdance phenomena to the screen with Breakin' and the quickly cobbled-together sequel barely a later year. But three years prior to that, they crafted a cinematic response to the growing legions of adolescent fans in the west enthralled by the ninja mythos. The three titles in what would become a loosely-related chop-socky trilogy have now been restored and re-released via world cinema archivists Eureka Video.

In 1986, Jean-Claude Van Damme was the title alien in Predator before he was hurriedly recast. Ryan looks back at what happened...
In the mid-1980s, Belgian martial artist Jean-Claude Van Damme arrived in America with dreams of stardom. Possessing a finely-honed physique, thanks to years of training in (among other things) karate, kickboxing and ballet, he was ambitious and brimming with self-belief.
The acting bug bit Van Damme while he was still in his teens: he played “a bad guy with all the knives” in the 1984 French gangster movie Rue Barbare and, determined to further his goal of becoming an actor, hopped on a plane to Los Angeles. His first few years in America were, however, tough. He slept in a rental car for two weeks, and made money by teaching aerobics and martial arts, delivering pizzas, and working as a doorman at a restaurant belonging to Chuck Norris.

The rise and fall of Cannon Films is told in Mark Hartley's wildly entertaining documentary, Electric Boogaloo. Here's Ryan's review...
Producers Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus were famous (or infamous) for many things, but a stringent approach to quality filmmaking was hardly one of them. At the height of their success in the 1980s, the Israeli cousins, and their company Cannon Films, were synonymous with cheap B-movies of just about every kind: Chuck Norris action flicks, sex comedies, ninja martial arts epics, dance movies and tawdry slasher horrors.
Their films frequently horrified critics, but became a staple of video rental stores: with Cannon Films cranking out as many as 50 or so pictures a year at its peak, the company's distinctive logo and self-explanatory film titles (New Year's Evil, Avenging Force, Enter The Ninja) were ubiquitous throughout the 80s and early 90s. The company was eventually brought down by its fast-and-loose approach to film production,...

Fall officially kicks off this weekend, and already you're suffering from a nasty artificial-pumpkin-flavor hangover. Lay off the lattes and watch a movie instead. Here's what's happening:
On the Big Screen: "Battle of the Year"
Can the world be won by poppin' and lockin'? Of all the standoffs we've seen in 2013 — Obama vs. Putin, Obama vs. Syria, Miley Cyrus vs. every mother in America — it turns out the battle of the year takes place on the dance floor, and Sawyer from "Lost" (aka Josh Holloway) assumes the role of fearless leader. Out today, this movie, which also stars Chris Brown, features dance battles on the global level. America has lost its footing in the hip hop world and needs to topple the current leader, Korea. So what's a crew to do? Go hide out in an abandoned juvie facility and practice robot moves until they're blue in the face.

This weekend, Sylvester Stallone and company return to action in the sequel to "The Expendables" -- conveniently titled "The Expendables 2." There's been a lot of talk this week about just which member of "The Expendables" is the most or least expendable. We thought it would be fun to take a look at a good portion of the team when they were all at their most expendable. You know, back when Stallone was doing soft-core pornography and Bruce Wills was singing the theme song to Seagram's Golden Wine Coolers.
Ahead, a look at the early careers of "The Expendables" cast.

For those of us who grew up during the decade of big hair and excess, just the mere sight of the Cannon Films logo is enough to conjure more than a boatload of nostalgia. Thanks to Drafthouse Films said boat is soon to be sailing our way!
From the Press Release
Drafthouse Films, the distribution arm of the world-famous Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, announced today the acquisition of all Us rights to Electric Boogaloo: The Wild, Untold Story of Cannon Films from world-wide sales agent Celluloid Nightmares.
From acclaimed cult film documentarian Mark Hartley (Not Quite Hollywood, Machete Maidens Unleashed), the film centers on the story of two Israeli-born, movie-obsessed cousins, Menahem Golan and Yoram Globus, who in pursuit of the "American dream" launched an indie studio that would produce over 120 exploitation films from 1979-1989, turning a renegade outfit into the proclaimed "seventh Hollywood major."
The film is currently in pre-production in Australia.

Ice-t; most people know him best now as Detective Fin Tutuola on Law & Order: Svu or if you're a hip-hop fan, like myself, you'll always remember him as one of the pioneers of "gangsta" rap before there was even a term for it. A lot of us even dig his surprisingly eclectic film career. He's been in movies as diverse as New Jack City, Surviving the Game, Tank Girl, Johnny Mnemonic and Leprechaun in the Hood.
However, it's his very early foray into the world of films that I want to focus on in this installment of Trailer Trash.

Oh, it's Jean-Claude Van Damme. Let's all get snarky and ironic.
F**k that.
Yeah, he's not winning any acting Oscars, but the Belgian kickboxer-turned-action star has entertained us more than 90% of his Hollywood peers. Fusing years of karate and kickboxing training with -- fine -- a slightly melodramatic acting style, he's made films like "Kickboxer," "Bloodsport" and "Double Impact" that have influenced a generation of martial arts movies and set the standard that many lesser imitators would follow.
In honor of his (presumably butt-kicking) role as Master Croc in "Kung Fu Panda 2," here's a look back at some of Jcvd's finest moments both onscreen and off.
9. Jcvd Shills for 'World of Warcraft'
We know this ad is in French, but thankfully we have a cheap, Parisian intern on staff. Play the video below and read along. Loosely translated, Van Damme is saying, "My name is Jean-Claude Van Damme...
