- Amarnath Kapoor has devoted himself to business and money. In the process he neglects his only son, Vicky, leaving him to be cared for by Munshi Phoolchand. Starved of love and affection from his father, Vicky starts to drink alcohol and does not miss a single opportunity to insult his father. Amarnath would like Vicky to marry into wealth but Vicky has no such plans on his mind as he loves a poor cabaret dancer, Meena. Amarnath does not approve of this proposal and threatens to throw Vicky out of the house. Now Vicky must either decide to fall in line with his father's wish or quietly move to the streets.—Soumitra
- Vicky Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan), the only son of multi-millionaire industrialist, Amarnath (Pran), grows up to be an alcoholic, a spoiled brat but with a good heart. Amarnath has detached himself completely from Vicky's life and provides him money in lieu of affection and care, leaving this to be taken care of by Munshi Phoolchand (Om Prakash).
As a child, Vicky adopts an orphaned young boy (whose mum had died due to stress from a business decision of Vicky's father to clear out a slum cluster) named Anwar. Vicky sponsors Anwars education but makes the principal promise that no-one will ever reveal the name of his benefactor to Anwar.
Then when Vicky grows up he continues his philanthropy as he gives a generous donation to an absolute stranger for the medical operation of his sick son. This attracts the attention of con men such as Natwar Shah who lay out a honey trap for Vicky in the form of a dancer Meena (Jaya Prada). Vicky promptly falls in love with Meena and gift her a very expensive necklace. Natwar wants Meena to use her influence over Vicky to sponsor them for overseas tours & concerts.
Meena refuses. Meena then realizes that the necklace gifted by Vicky has gone missing. But Vicky tells her that the necklace was a fake (even though it was real). Meena is offended, but later finds out that Vicky had gifted a real diamond necklace, which Natwarlal had stolen. Meera refuses a marriage proposal from Natwar and insults him when Natwar threatens Meera's blind father & kicks him out of her house. Natwar swears revenge on Meera.
Vicky is very resentful of being ignored by his dad in this unceremonious manner and leaves no effort to mock and belittle him at every available opportunity. Amarnath hopes to get his son married, but Vicky loves Meena (Jaya Prada), the daughter of a poor blind man, which is not acceptable to Amarnath.
Amarnath meets Meena & insults her poverty and tells her that he will never accept her as his daughter in law & forbids her from meeting Vicky. Meena leaves town. Its Anwar who finds Meena & persuades her against leaving Vicky. He reunites Vicky and Meena. One day, Amarnath decides he has had enough and decides to turn Vicky out of his house. He has him sign waivers and asks him to get out, which Vicky happily does. While Vicky is relieved of being freed from his dad's control, the question remains that with no skills at making a living, how is Vicky to survive.
Anwar then finds out that Vicky was his secret benefactor and invites Vicky to stay at his home. Vicky refuses. He drinks stale whiskey, which prompts Munshiji to do manual labor to buy a bottle of whiskey for him. But he has a heart attack and is admitted to the hospital. Munshiji dies in front of Vicky and when he finds that Munshiji died because of a bottle of whiskey, he gives up drinking.
He breaks up all relations with his dad when he refuses to come to Munshiji's funeral. Amarnath's business partner tries to take advantage of the rift between father and son, by trying to get Vicky to stay with him. The business partner, Govardhan wants Vicky to marry his daughter. But Vicky insults him.
Govardhan is offended and contacts Natwar for a contract to kill Meena. Natwar forces the butcher, whose son's life Vicky had saved, by kidnapping his son, and asking to kill Meena in exchange for the safe return of his son. The butcher pretends to kill Meena. Meanwhile Amarnath feels lonely after Vicky's departure and realizes his mistake. He takes to drinking himself. Govardhan again intervenes by telling Amarnath that Vicky is at his house. He makes Amarnath sign over all his property over and then plans to dispose of him. Vicky comes to know of the plan and intervene in time to stop Govardhan before he can kill Amarnath.
Anwar arrives in time to arrest everyone, but Vicky is wounded. But then it is revealed that Meena is alive as the butcher could not kill Meena because he knew Meena was Vicky's love. Meena and Vicky get married and Amarnath opens a poor colony in name of Munshiji.
