Hello, readers, and welcome to a new year of releases! We may already be well into the month of January, but this is our first official weekly Blu-ray and DVD recap of 2019, since last week was a quiet one on the home media front, and we already have a ton of titles to get excited for this Tuesday. If you happened to miss Hell Fest when it was in theaters last year, you can now catch up with Gregory Plotkin’s slasher on various formats, and as far as recent genre series are concerned, the first seasons of both The Purge and Castle Rock are making their way home tomorrow as well.
Scream Factory is kicking off another great year of releases with the Nic Cage thriller 8Mm, and Scorpion Releasing has put together a special edition Blu for Blind Date that cult fans are going to want to pick up.

When Harold Ramis died last week I looked for a poster to memorialize him. It wasn’t easy: Ramis was a director of American comedies, and American comedies, especially from the 1980s onwards, tend not to have the most visually arresting posters. But then I came across the poster for National Lampoon’s Vacation, a poster I had seen before but not paid a lot of attention to because its hyper-realist, exaggerated comic book style wasn’t really my cup of tea. But looking at it years later I can appreciate it as one of the last hurrahs of movie poster illustration as well as a witty parody of heroic iconography in the service of broad comedy.
The poster is the work of Boris Vallejo. Born in Peru in 1941—he came to the States at the age of 23—Vallejo is a renowned fantasy and science-fiction illustrator known for his muscle-bound heroes,...

The Films:
Roger Corman, God love him. God love Shout! Factory too, for these continued collections of his films, making any and every B-movie fan happy. Corman loved to mine a successful genre for all its worth, and when Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Conan the Barbarian hit in 1982, Corman rushed a few sword and sorcery films out. Creatures, boobs, “epic” journeys, it’s all here, low budget camp style.
Deathstalker (1983): There’s much to love here. The plot is silly enough and perfect for late night viewing: an old man convinces the Stalker to collect three magical items and fills his ears with tales of heroes, yet the Stalker loses track of his quest and beds every nubile woman in sight. Awesome. So there’s tits, blood, creatures, and while it’s campy most of the time, it’s always fun and quirky. Deathstalker is Conan-lite, but fun, fun, fun.

Trollhunter - is one of those festival favourites that somehow slipped through the cracks here at Qe. Oh, we knew all about it, we just never caught a screening for review or promoted it for some reason. Chances are you've seen the amazing trailers from Magnet that have come out since the film was picked up for distro. Know though that this is a Norwegian film with subs and that it's supposed to be pretty stellar. Looking forward to finally watching it.
Blitz - is a UK cop/action flick starring Jason Statham. It's been getting middling reviews since it's release in the UK, some calling it out as being on par with a Mftv movie. Seems like one I'd check out if I was in the mood for some action though.
Roger Corman's Sword And Sorcery Collection - featuring Deathstalker, Deathstalker II, The Warrior And The Sorceress & Barbarian Queen.

Now, there’s a good chance you may not have heard of Rubber, or even seen the trailer for director/musician Quentin Dupieux’s bizarre little movie that’s set in the Californian desert and follows a psychic killer tyre called ‘Robert’ who has a taste for exploding peoples heads.
The rather insane little film made its festival debut last year and instantly became a cult classic with some loving it’s weirdness and some hating it for the same reason. Twitch called it;
“intellectual wankery of the highest order in the sheepskin of a B-film of the lowest order”
Well, whatever it’s quality distributor Magnet are going the right way about selling it. Take a look at this gorgeous, funny, cracker of a poster by classic movie poster and fantasy artist Boris Vallejo, famed for his muscled characters in various states of undress. Here he gives the titular...

Well, three weeks into January and the DVD and Blu-ray releases are heating up, with some of last summers biggest movies finally hitting the home formats, and some classic re-releases… Here’s the weeks highlights:
Grown Ups (DVD & Blu-ray)
In the tradition of The Big Chill, five childhood friends (Adam Sandler, Kevin James, Chris Rock, David Spade and Rob Schneider) reunite after 30 years to attend the funeral of their beloved youth basketball coach over the Fourth of July weekend. They all stay at the late coach’s lake house with their families in tow. Comedy ensues as they relive old times, tease each other, and try to show their kids how to have fun the old fashion way. The hilarious reunion shows them not only how different their lives have become, but how much they still have in common.
The Switch (DVD & Blu-ray)

Fuquay-varina - It was a speedy two days with major stars dropping into my neighborhood.
On a Thursday night the man who made predicted FedEx arrived at a Durham library. Mister McFeely (David Newell) still fits in his Speedy Delivery uniform and hat as he greeted Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood fans of all ages. Most of the ages were under seven. Luckily I had brought along a little kid in order not to stick out.
McFeely was at the end of a weeklong tour around the state to touch base with the kids. Lately whenever any star of kid focused tv shows comes to town, it’s part of some over inflated media spectacular stage show at the sports arena. There’s singing, dancing, indoor fireworks and motorcycle stunts meant to dazzle a three year old. Plus there’s a $18 convenience charge on the tickets. But this was not McFeely’s type of entertainment.

October 5th is looking so sweet! In what's going to be a banner day for Roger Corman fans, Shout! Factory (god bless its soul) is releasing several of Corman's craziest titles as part of its stellar Cult Classics Collection, and we've got all the details!
From the Press Release:
Stay up all night with the films that put a new twist on the slasher genre. Along with Halloween (1978), Friday the 13th(1980) and Prom Night (1980), Slumber Party Massacre (1982) helped define the slasher film ethos of the 1980s. Put together by first-time director Amy Holden from a script, titled “Don’t Open the Door," by feminist author Rita Mae Brown (Rubyfruit Jungle), the film was an immediate hit for Roger Corman's New World Pictures, eventually spawning two sequels.
Here, for the first time, all three Slumber Party Massacres are brought together in one DVD set, due to drill its way into...

Roller Derby, a sport that peeked in popularity in the early 70’s, is based on formation roller skating around an oval track, with points scored as certain (mostly female) players lap members of the opposing team. Judging by last week’s poor box-office performance of Whip It, it appears that Roller Derby is not a fad currently in vogue, but Drew Barrymore’s new film gives me an excuse to revisit the greatest movie of all about the rough, tough world of this trashy sports phenomenon. That would be 1974’s Unholy Rollers, starring the late Claudia Jennings, a grimy, low-brow slice of 70’s exploitation that perfectly captures the grimy, low-brow sport that is roller derby. From its then-trendy premise, to its goofy use of humor, to its energetic but clumsy execution, Unholy Rollers is truly one hell of an entertaining R-rated 70’s time capsule but one that is Not available on DVD.

Special FX artist, Producer, Writer, Director, Film executive and most recently Comic Book Author, twenty year Industry veteran Paul J. Salamoff could be considered a sort of Renaissance man when it comes to the Hollywood machine. He’s also written the definitive guide to Movie Sets called, On The Set: The Hidden Rules Of Movie Making Etiquette. However, what I found to be the most compelling and sobering fact about Paul is that above all else the man is a true fanboy. Like the rest of us, his work stems from his passion for science fiction, horror and fantasy. It reaches back to his childhood and the countless hours spent watching classic films, reading, and just letting his imagination run wild over the limitless possibilities imbedded in the human psyche. Of all the interviews I’ve done over the years with relative strangers, his was the most easy going and comfortable.

Sexy superheroine the Black Scorpion is returning to guard the streets of Angel City, this time in a new comic book series.
Roger Corman's Black Scorpion is being published by Bluewater Productions in a partnership with the director, who is known mainly for his horror movie output.
The crimefighter previously featured in two made-for-cable movies in 1995 and 1997, both starring Joan Severance, and a 2001 Sci Fi Channel series starring Michelle Lintel.
The new comic book, out in November, will reintroduce and reimagine the scantily-clad vigilante who was created by Corman and producer Craig Nevius.
Nevius said: "Roger and I had always intended to create a comic book franchise based on the Black Scorpion movies and TV series.
"And with classic costumed superheroes back in vogue thanks to the success of the Batman and Iron Man movies, the time seemed right to bring back our costumed superheroine."

Phil Spector was sentenced to 19 years to life in prison on Friday for the murder of actress Lana Clarkson.
A Los Angeles Superior Court judge sentenced Spector to 15 years to life for second-degree murder and an additional four years for personal use of a gun, according to the Associated Press.
Clarkson, who starred in Roger Corman's cult hit Barbarian Queen, died of a gunshot fired in her mouth in Spector's mansion in 2003. She had met Spector only hours earlier at her job as a nightclub hostess.
Spector was best known as a music producer in the 1960s, whose signature "Wall of Sound" souped up the tracks of Ike and Tina Turner, the Ronettes and the Beatles.

Creepy pervo music producer Phil Spector was finally convicted in his second trial today, Monday April 13, of second-degree murder in the shooting death of Lana at his mansion six years ago. He'll spend at least 18 years in prison (barring a successful appeal, which this bastard won't get) for the murder of 40-year-old Lana Clarkson, star of the 1985 cult film Barbarian Queen. Spector shot her in the mouth in 2003 after she met him only hours earlier at her job as a nightclub hostess...

Music producer Phil Spector got a replay - only this time it was a different tune. The 68-year-old music legend has been found guilty of second-degree murder in the shooting death of actress Lana Clarkson, who was slain at his mansion six years ago. In a retrial, the jury of six men and six women returned the verdict in a Los Angeles Superior Court on Monday afternoon. Spector could face up to 15 years to life in prison. To know him is to (a) acquit him or (b) convict him? That's the task ahead of jurors in the retrial of Phil Spector on murder charges as they began deliberations today, a year-and-a-half after a previous panel couldn't reach a verdict, forcing a mistrial. Spector's second spin within the criminal justice system began five months ago, when prosecutors started rehashing hundreds of hours of testimony contending that the Wall of Sound maestro went berserk in early morning hours of Feb. 3, 2003, and shot to death B-movie star Lana Clarkson. Earlier, Spector picked up the 40-year-old Barbarian Queen actress at the House of Blues on the Sunset Strip, where she worked as a VIP hostess. Hours...
