Six months after going missing in the Mount Baldy wilderness outside Los Angeles, it has been confirmed today that veteran actor Julian Sands has passed away at the age of 65.
The San Bernardino Sheriff’s Department said in an official statement today, “The identification process for the body located on Mt. Baldy on June 24, 2023, has been completed and was positively identified as 65-year-old Julian Sands of North Hollywood. The manner of death is still under investigation, pending further test results.
“We would like to extend our gratitude to all the volunteers that worked tirelessly to locate Mr. Sands,” this afternoon’s statement continued.
Here in the horror world, Julian Sands is best known for playing the titular Warlock in the 1989 horror movie Warlock, reprising his role in 1993’s Warlock: The Armageddon.

This bona fide classic may be, as Gregory Mank says, the best American horror picture of the 1940s. The teaming of Boris Karloff and Henry Daniell is sensational. Producer Val Lewton gives the players career-best characterizations and dialogue, and director Robert Wise adds tension and chills. Bela Lugosi is in for a supporting part. Icing on the grave-robbing cake is a new 4K scan from the original negative — we can forget the dull and dark prints seen in the past.

Unlike most of what Scream Factory puts out there, this would be my first exposure to The Doctors and the Devils. I had never even heard of the film, if I’m being entirely honest. One thing I like about the label is that every so often, they challenge my prejudices when it comes to the type of films I usually watch. I’ve always gone out of my way to avoid period movies, unless there is a really good reason to watch them. Depending on the subject matter, and the period that is being recreated, of course. Anything that takes place during the 1800s, that isn’t about Jack the Ripper, is going to have a hard time keeping my attention.

October may be over, but that doesn’t mean horror and sci-fi fans don’t have anything to look forward to this month. November 4th will see the release of Brett Ratner’s Hercules 3D and a few cult classics, including The Doctor and the Devils and The Ninth Configuration. There are also several indie horror movies making their debut this week, including The Taking of Deborah Logan, Ghost Bride and Dead Girls.
And for those of you looking to add a few Blu-ray collections to your home library, Amazon is releasing an exclusive set in honor of Stanley Kubrick (which looks stellar) and there’s also a new Doctor Who box set to look forward to as well.
Spotlight Titles:
The Doctor and the Devils (Scream Factory, Blu-ray)
Based on Dylan Thomas’ original screenplay, this shocking horror-thriller stars Timothy Dalton as Thomas Rock, a brilliant young anatomy professor in 1820s Edinburgh.

If you’re paying attention, you would have noticed that nothing has gone up on the site since the 3rd of the month. And yeah, I’m a procrastinator, but the main reason things have been slow lately is because it’s October. I have gone into full-binge mode, and I am trying to make my way through a massive pile of horror Blu-rays and screeners that I have arranged for the month. I’ve been talking shop with my close friends in the community, discussing future events and projects, and basically just taking a full bite out of Halloween 2014.

It’s impossible for me to hide the fact that Scream Factory is one of my favorite boutique media labels. As far as content goes, they give me the type of films that I really want to see on the Blu-ray format. They’ve had a strong first couple of years, and I see no signs of them slowing down anytime soon. Two of the biggest… neigh, The two biggest releases of the 2014 Halloween Seasons is coming from these guys. I’m speaking, of course, about the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, as well as the Complete Halloween Collection. But you’ve already heard about those, and pre-ordered them, right? Well, here is their entire fall(Sept/Oct… And some November, cause shut up.) lineup, in case a few have slipped by you.

Two grave robbers supply dead bodies to anatomists in 1820’s Edinburgh, but when the delivered bodies appear to be too fresh, one of the scientists suspects with mounting horror that their cadavers are not coming from coffins in 1985’s The Doctor and the Devils. Scream Factory is bringing this tale of morbid obsession and deadly dealings to Blu-ray, and we have a look at the cover art and list of bonus features.

This is one of the reasons I love Scream Factory so much. The Doctor and the Devils is a film that I have never seen. I’ve heard it mentioned a couple of times, but never did the opportunity arise for me to have seen it. It’s weird, because it sounds right up my alley. Thankfully, on November 14th, Scream Factory will be dropping the film onto Blu-ray. Check out the press release below, and be sure to pre-order your copy by either clicking here to purchase on Shout!’s website, or here for Amazon.

A whole bunch of Scream Factory goodness was dropped into our inbox this morning, so let's forgo the usual chit-chat and cut right to the chase!
First up, the world's greatest distribution company announced on their Facebook page that they're bringing three titles to Blu-ray for the very first time this coming fall, kicking off with a double feature release of 1972's Tales from the Crypt and 1973's The Vault of Horror.
The two classic British anthology films will be housed together as a double feature on Blu-ray (both for the first time) and Vault will be presented in its uncut form.
Also announced was the 1985 grave robber thriller The Doctor and the Devils, which was produced by Mel Brooks and stars Timothy Dalton, Patrick Stewart, Stephen Rea, Jonathan Pryce…and even Twiggy!

Before the TV show of the same name came out in 1989, there was the Tales from the Crypt movie. Released in 1972, this British anthology horror film explored multiple matters of the macabre, from a Christmas Eve killer to a Chinese figurine that grants three wishes, and also featured the legendary Peter Cushing in one of its tales.
A sequel to Tales from the Crypt, titled Vault of Horror, came out in 1973 and Scream Factory has announced plans to release both of these horror anthologies as a double feature Blu-ray later this year.
Appearing on Blu-ray for the first time, the Tales from the Crypt/Vault of Horror double feature is set to be released sometime this fall. So the phone rings, and I answer it, and it's Mel Brooks. That's an actual thing that happened. That's now something I can say. And even better, the 40 minute conversation that followed me answering the phone is one of my favorites in recent memory. How often do you get to talk to a comedy legend about one of the pinnacle moments of not only their career, but of film comedy in general? I was told I'd have about 15 minutes originally. Time was tight. And if you get offered 15 minutes to talk to Mel Brooks about "Blazing Saddles," you take it, right? We ended up having a really fun back and forth about that film, about films he's produced, about his partnership with Gene Wilder, and about the ways Hollywood failed the great Richard Pryor. The only reason we wrapped it up is because we had to, and it would have...

The astute patron of horror cinema may take a quick glance at the pitch-black Burke and Hare and feel a strong air of familiarity, one that says "Hey, do I really need to see another version of the fact-based tale that was already covered in The Flesh and The Fiends (1960), The Doctor and the Devils (1985), and I Sell the Dead (2008)?" And in many cases the answer would be "nah," but there are actually some rather interesting components at work here. The director is John Landis (Animal House, The Blues Brothers, An American Werewolf in London), and it's been a very long time since we've seen a feature from that guy; the writers are the team behind the popular St. Trinian's series; and the cast is... well,...

Burke and Hare
Written by Piers Ashworth and Nick Moorcroft
Directed by John Landis
UK, 2010
There have been several films about the infamous true-life grave robbers William Burke and William Hare, including Freddie Francis’s 1985 The Doctor And The Devils and John Gilling’s 1959 The Flesh and The Fiends. Perhaps the most famous is Robert Wise’s 1945 classic The Body Snatcher, which starred both Boris Karloff and Béla Lugosi. You can now add John Landis’s Burke and Hare to the list.
Burke and Hare marks Landis’s first feature theatrical release in twelve years, the last being 1998′s Susan’s Plan. Thankfully the director who gave us such classics as Animal House, An American Werewolf in London, Michael Jackson’s Thriller and The Blues Brothers still has a trick or two up his sleeve. Admittedly his latest feature pales in comparison to his earlier work, but Burke and Hare...

The stellar I Sell the Dead (review here) is finally hitting DVD and Blu-ray on March 30th, and in honor of the occasion Dread Central will be running a series of interviews with several members of the cast and crew. First up is writer/director Glenn McQuaid.
Elaine Lamkin: First, I have to say how surprised I was when during the behind-the-scenes featurette on the DVD someone mentioned that The Scratcher pub in the East Village, which doubled for the interiors of The Fortune of War pub in I Sell the Dead, is owned by Irish actor, Karl Geary, whom I interviewed for his role in The Burrowers! The film world, particularly the indie film world, can be very small.
Glenn McQuaid: It's a small world all right, especially when you're working in the horror genre. Karl's a fellow Dubliner, too, but it's through his acting that I know him.

Burke & Hare is the latest project from director John Landis (American Werewolf in London, The Blues Brothers) and is based on the true story of two 19th century graverobbers who find a lucrative business providing cadavers for an Edinburgh medical school. The story has been filmed numerous times already, the last being the 1985 Freddie Francis film The Doctor and the Devils.
The film stars Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) as William Burke and Andy Serkis (Lord of the Rings) as William Hare, with a supporting cast that includes Isla Fisher (Confessions of a Shopaholic) as Ginny, an ambitious young actress and Burke’s love interest, and Jessica Hynes neé Stevenson (Spaced, Shaun of the Dead) as Hare’s haggard and suffering wife, Lucky.
Whilst we’ve already had plenty of behind the scenes photos from on-set, Empire got the scoop on the first official photo as you can see below:
