- Opening Text: Long before the Pilgrims, French settlers were prospering in Nova Scotia. They called their province Acadia. In 1755, British conquerers exiled the Acadians. Most were shipped to the American colonies, Europe, and far-flung British islands. Word of a new home spread among the scattered refugees. From around the world they made their way to Louisiana. The 'Cadjuns rebuilt, hoping their new homes would be permanent. But within a century, they were once again in peril. Committees of Vigilance were being formed to rid the state of "undesirables."
