Paramount is keen to get a sequel to the surprise 2013 success of World War Z out next year, where they've slated it for a Summer release. They're going to have to do it with a new director, however, as Juan Antonio Bayona has stepped away from the project.
Well now...it's hard not to look at this news and not be remined of the Many production issues that plagued World War Z before it's release. The troubles have been well documented, and evident in how the final film comes together (the entire 3rd act was scrapped and re-shot). Today's news isn't a great start for World War Z 2, which currently has a release date of June 9, 2017.
Director Juan Antonio Bayona has stepped away from the film, citing scheduling conflicts as the reason. He's currently still in production/post-production on A Monster Calls and doesn't expect to be wrapped up...

Several new set photos have gone online from Malta showcasing a look at Michael Fassbender in costume for his starring new role in the forthcoming historical action-adventure film adaptation of the "Assassin's Creed" video game series.
The shots show Fassbender filming scenes with crew. The actor plays a modern day man who uses a device that allows his mind to inhabit the body of his ancestors - in this case an assassin in Spain during the 15th century. Justin Kurzel helms the film which is targeting a late Summer release.

Having finished filming last year and already receiving a pair of release date delays, fans are eager to see what Duncan Jones' upcmoing Warcraft movie has to offer. They'll get their first chance very soon, as the trailer is coming on Friday. Until then, however, you can enjoy this swanky new poster.
If Legendary Pictures had stuck to the original plan, we'd be about a month away from seeing Warcraft in theaters. Star Wars is a powerful force, however, and caused the film to be pushed back (which was then pushed into a Summer release later on). All this means that fans who've been eager to see footage of the movie in action, have had to wait a long time. Fortuantely, that wait is about to be over.

There's been little word on Christopher Nolan's next feature film after Interstellar, but lo and behold we at least know exactly when it's going to come out. Warner Bros. has set a Summer 2017 release for Nolan's next. Come inside to check it out!
Whatever Christopher Nolan has planned for his next feature film, you can expect to see it on July 21, 2017 (as reported by Variety). And that's about All the information we have so far on the flick. Nolan hasn't publicly stated what he's planning, but obviously WB knows enough to be willing to give it a prime Summer release spot.
The film will hit just a week after Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales and War of the Planet of the Apes, and a scant week ahead of Marvel/Sony's next Spider-Man reboot. Luc Besson's Valerian was slated to come out the same day,...

Duncan Jones' upcoming Warcraft movie has a big presence at Sdcc this year, and while at last night's preview event the director popped up at the Warcraft booth. He spoke about how the film is nearly finished, and confirmed he has plans for not one, but two sequels.
You may remember that Warcraft was originally supposed to release this December before The Force Awakens forced it to move to March...then from March it was recently pushed to a Summer release in June. That wasn't always the plan, and because of that, the film itself is almost finished, nearly a year before it's release.
Duncan Jones himself confirmed at Sdcc last night, that the film only has about 10 VFX shots left to be completed before the film is finished and ready. That means the director and studio have had plenty of time already to get a feel for the...

As well, Harbinger Down was developed through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and by Dark Dunes Productions. The film is currently in post-production, with a Summer release coming soon. Fans of sci-fi and horror can view the latest clip below. In the story, several scientists venture into the Arctic. They are there to study global warming, but they find something strange. If Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is to be believed, it sounds like comic book fans won't have to wait as long as we initially thought for the highly-anticipated Shazam film, in which he is signed to play villain/anti-hero Black Adam. While promoting his upcoming film, San Andreas, Johnson was asked about the Shazam movie (see video at the bottom of this post), which is slated to release April 5, 2019, but to ask Johnson it may come a bit earlier. "No, I don't think it is going to be that far away. It's going to be earlier than that. I don't think 2019," he said. You might recall Warner Bros. announced an ambitious upcoming DC comics-based film slate late last year. Detailing their upcoming films from March 2016's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice all the way to Green Lantern in June 2020. The idea WB is looking to release Shazam sooner...

Sean Connery's last appearance as James Bond, and the last 'unofficial' 007 movie. We revisit Never Say Never Again...
So does this count? Never Say Never Again stirs many arguments by shaking up the official order, splitting fans on the issue of its legitimacy. Ruins pub quiz questions such as ‘How many actors have played M?’ due to the inevitable argument whether Edward Fox should be numbered. Put such issues aside and enjoy what remains: a sly, witty semi-pastiche that doesn’t attempt to recapture past glories but can easily hold its own alongside Diamonds Are Forever and Octopussy. And with much less swimming than Thunderball.
The Villain: Ignore Emilo: Maximillian Largo is his own maniac. Short, tubby, lanky blond hair receding, Largo is Draco Malfoy gone to seed. Easily visualised shuffling around Comic Con, accompanied by Mr Kidd and the reformed Jaws. Yet Largo is one of the film’s strengths.

A remake of the first game in the "Gears of War" series will soon be making its debut on Xbox One.
Polygon announced the news, saying the game will have upgraded lighting and textures and run at 60Fps. The cinematics will also be remade by animation studio Plastic Wax.
Black Tusk Studios, who is in charge of the series going forward, may not be involved in the project as the remaster is being done by "Brink" and "Batman: Arkham Origins" multiplayer developer Splash Damage.
This might explain comments from Black Tusk Studios general manager Rod Fergusson last month when he scuttled rumors of the series getting a "Halo: Master Chief Collection" style boxset remaster. The quotes he made were very specifically about a potential 'Marcus Fenix Collection', not an individual game from the series undergoing a remake.

Hot on the heels of Paramount picking a new director for Star Trek 3, it looks like they've also finally set a release date for the upcoming sequel...as expected it's in 2016.
Well when the wheels start turning they get to moving pretty quickly. At the start of this week, Star Trek 3 had no director and no release date, with many wondering if Paramount would still be able to make their planned 2016 release window in time for the franchise's big anniversary. Now, within the span of 24 hours, Star Trek 3 looks back on track with Justin Lin (Fast & Furious) brought on to direct, and a release date set for July 8, 2016.

With the Afm in full swing, Relativity Media has shuffled around its upcoming film release schedule to make room for acquisitions and to better position its new features.
Most notably there's " The Transporter Legacy," the upcoming reboot of the action franchise with Ed Skrein replacing Jason Statham in the role of Frank Martin. It's a high-profile title that aims to be the first of a new trilogy.
Originally slated for a February 27th release next year, the film has been delayed four months and will now open in the more lucrative prime Summer release slot of June 19th.
Following its premiere in Toronto this Fall, Relativity has set Mike Binder's drama "Black or White" for a platform release starting January 23rd ahead of an expansion a week later.
The racial drama, starring Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer, will also get a one-week awards-qualifying run on December 3rd.

Jeffrey Katzenberg’s animation powerhouse is reportedly a $3.4bn acquisition target by the Japanese conglomerate.
A spokesperson declined to comment on reports that initially surfaced in The Hollywood Reporter this weekend.
Katzenberg has sought a buyer for many years since he broke the company away from DreamWorks as a public entity in 2004.
Intense scrutiny by Wall Street of DreamWorks Animation stock in light of patchy opening weekend performances in recent years has fuelled speculation of a buyout.
Summer release How To Train Your Dragon 2 has been a global hit and currently stands at $611m.
Softbank recently acquired a $20m piece of Chinese internet behemoth Alibaba.

This weekend saw the release of Paramount/Nickelodeon's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot, and the numbers have come in putting the film at a better than expected $65 million debut. It managed to snag the top spot from Guardians of the Galaxy for the weekend and Paramount is sitting happy. So happy in fact, that they've gone ahead and announced a sequel to the film, even going so far as to give it a release date!
According to Variety (and confirmed by a number of sites now), Paramount has set June 3, 2016 (a proper Summer release time) as the date for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 2. This is coming on the heels of a better than expected box office results, especially against stiff competition in Guardians, and Paramount is looking to capitalize. Sony Pictures is reportedly considering delaying the third film in "The Amazing Spider-Man" trilogy from June 10th 2016 to sometime in 2017 according to AICN.
Apparently director Marc Webb needs more time to work on the third film which is currently in pre-production. Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman apparently completed the screenplay for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" earlier this year with plans to begin filming before year's end.
The weak reviews and under performance of "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" however have likely made Sony rethink its strategy to rush the film out. "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" is currently sitting at $699.1M globally, $60 million behind the first one and the lowest earner in the history of the franchise thus far.
Rather than relinquish its prime Summer release date, Sony would likely instead move up its "Sinister Six" spin-off film from 2017 and insert it into that Summer 2016 release slot.
None of this is confirmed at this time.

Young women turned out in droves this weekend to see teen romance The Fault in our Stars, which easily took the top spot with $48 million. Meanwhile, Edge of Tomorrow was unable to convert strong reviews in to a successful debut. The Fault in our Stars opened noticeably higher than past romantic hits The Vow ($41.2 million) and Dear John ($30.5 million). Despite doing more business on Friday, though, Fault wound up lower than star Shailene Woodley's Divergent ($54 million) for the full weekend. With over 10 million copies in print, John Green's The Fault in our Stars is one of the most popular books in recent memory. Fans of the book were enamored with the movie's trailer, which appeared to accurately portray the story of two cancer-stricken teens falling in love. From there, distributor 20th Century Fox mobilized those fans with a targeted marketing strategy that focused heavily on social media outreach.

Friday Am Update: Playing at over 3,000 locations, Maleficent earned a very strong $4.2 million on Thursday night. That's ahead of early shows for Alice in Wonderland ($3.9 million) and Oz The Great and Powerful ($2 million). For the weekend, Maleficent should easily earn over $50 million.Forecast: On the final weekend of May, Maleficent faces off against Seth McFarlane's A Million Ways to Die in the West.
