Religious hysteria, family secrets and a tinge of the occult make hard times all the harder for protagonists in “Queen of Bones.” This Ontario-shot U.S. indie production is a rural gothic with echoes of both “Flowers in the Attic’s” dark YA melodrama and “Carrie’s” supernaturally vengeful coming of age. But it lacks the bold ideas and execution to approach those stories’ impact, winding up an underwhelming if watchable exploration of familiar themes and character types. Falling Forward Films plans a theatrical release for later this year, though this mild thriller would seem likelier to find an audience in home formats.

Within the first half-hour of the Lifetime limited series V.C. Andrews’ Dawn — premiering Saturday, July 8 at 8/7c — we learn that the titular teen’s parents kidnapped her as a baby, she’s a member of the ruthless and wealthy Cutler family, her high school crush is really her biological brother, and the boy raised as her sibling is her new love interest.
It’s the kind of twisted drama one would expect from the author who also gave us Flowers in the Attic, another salacious tale about an affluent household that won’t let familial relations get in the way of love.

Louise Fletcher, the Oscar-winning actress who became iconic for her turn as the villainous Nurse Ratched in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” has died at age 88. Deadline first reported the news of her death, which was shared with the outlet by her family. She died peacefully in her sleep at her farmhouse home in Montdurausse, France, surrounded by those she loved.
Fletcher became one of the great icons of cinematic villainy as Ratched, who menaced the patients at an institution for the mentally ill in the 1975 film. After a career in TV, Fletcher’s performance as the wicked nurse, who battles with Jack Nicholson’s R.P. McMurphy, was just her fourth in a film. “Cuckoo’s Nest,” directed by Milos Forman from the Ken Kesey novel, ended up winning the five “major” Academy Awards: Best Picture, Director, Actor (Nicholson), Actress (Fletcher), and Screenplay. It's been an absolutely crazy ride so far, but you haven't seen anything yet.
Jemima Rooper was kind enough to give her thoughts on playing Olivia Winfield Foxworth and viewing tips to get the most out of your finale-viewing experience.
What's your favorite thing about bringing Olivia to life?
My favorite thing is the variety! Playing a character at different stages of her life, building the back story that leads to such an undoing is just meaty and fabulous and the biggest gift for an actor.
I have to know how many times you wanted to flip the script so that Oliva could get the better of Malcolm!

Hannah Dodd plays Corrine Foxworth in Lifetime's Flowers in the Attic: The Origin.
She's right in the middle of one of the most complicated storylines in history and takes viewers right up to the moment the Mother of the Century allows her children to be locked in an attic.
We spoke with Hannah about living in the strange Foxworth family, and her answers don't disappoint!
What have you liked the most about being a part of Flowers in the Attic: The Origin?
Working with the cast and creative team was an absolute joy. I’ve made friendships for life, and we just had the best four months making this project.
Other than that, it was a really challenging role for me!
It was really fun to spend so long with a character, taking her from 16 up to her 30s and what that means from an acting perspective.
She experiences so much trauma throughout that time.

Oh, if we could only warn unsuspecting heroine Olivia Winfield Foxworth (Jemima Rooper), her life would’ve probably ended up much better than we see it play out in Lifetime’s new limited series Flowers in the Attic: The Origin. The four-episode series gives us the backstory to all the twisted family drama that made V.C. Andrews’ 1979 novel Flowers in the Attic such a sensation and spawned more books and adaptations over the years. In The Origin, airing on four consecutive Saturdays starting July 9, we meet Olivia, who has never been married and seemingly content with enjoying life working alongside her loving father, Mr. Winfield (Harry Hamlin). However, the arrival of the dashing Malcolm Foxworth (Condor‘s Max Irons) changes everything once he enters Olivia’s life and sweeps her off her feet with dreams of a happy ever after with him at Foxworth Hall in Virginia. Last September, the limited series “Mare of Easttown” entered the 73rd Primetime Emmys ceremony with seven major nominations, including one for star Kate Winslet and three for supporting players Evan Peters, Julianne Nicholson, and Jean Smart. In the end, Nicholson triumphed over Smart and joined Winslet and Peters in the winners’ circle. Now, the Screen Actors Guild has given Smart another chance at victory by nominating her for the guild’s Best TV Movie/Mini Actress award. Nicholson is out of the picture in this case, but, since SAG does not separate lead and supporting TV performances, Smart now faces the challenge of defeating Winslet.
Aside from Winslet, Smart’s competitors in this category are Jennifer Coolidge (“The White Lotus”), Cynthia Erivo (“Genius: Aretha”), and Margaret Qualley (“Maid”). The “V.C. Verse” has found its official home at A+E Networks. The Lifetime parent company has acquired the rights and licenses to “Flowers in the Attic” author V.C. Andrews’ entire library collection, including all new releases.
As part of the deal that gives A+E Networks exclusive access to more than 138 Andrews books, Lifetime — which has found much success with its “Flowers in the Attic” and “Casteel” TV movies — has put into development an adaptation of Andrews’ “Culter” series of books, following the twisted tale of Dawn Longchamp, whose entire world crumbles after the sudden death of her mother.
The next project to make it to the screen in the “V.C. Verse” will be the previously announced prequel limited series “Flowers in the Attic: The Origin,” which stars Jemima Rooper and Max Irons as Olivia Winfield Foxworth and Malcolm Foxworth along with Kelsey Grammer, Harry Hamlin, Paul Wesley and Kate Mulgrew.

Forced to live together in a confined space and depending on each other for survival, the Dollanganger siblings from 1987’s Flowers in the Attic have always reminded me of the kids from The Boxcar Children book series I grew up reading, although instead of solving mysteries on fun adventures, they were busy dealing with a scissors-wielding grandma, a murderous mother, and some intense incestual feelings—not exactly the type of material you’d find next to Gertrude Chandler Warner’s books in the library.
Published in 1979 and featuring evil parental figures, inter-family violence, and sibling incest, V.C. Andrews’ Flowers in the Attic was a sought-after page-turner for readers drawn to its controversial elements, and its viability in the bookstores paved its way to the cinemas in the mid-’80s. A story about four siblings—two brothers and two sisters—locked away in a gothic mansion’s upstairs room (and the...

Mother's Day is this Sunday, May 14th, which means it’s a perfect time to give thanks to all the mothers who are known as some of the best horror movie villains. Whether they were murderous themselves, like Mrs. Voorhees, or provided the necessary seeds, like Norma Bates, horror just wouldn’t be the same without some seriously off-script (developmentally speaking) mothers.
Before we get to horrific human mothers, though, it’s important to point out that in the animal kingdom, infanticide (killing offspring within their first year of life) and neglect is actually pretty common, and many times it’s an issue of resource allocation. If you were lucky enough to have hamsters growing up (or friends with hamsters, in my case), you may have witnessed this in horror firsthand: the mother hamster not only killing, but likely consuming one or more of her litter. While beyond disturbing, especially...

Was there a budding relationship between the Blossom twins?
It's a question that all Riverdale fans have been pondering since the smash CW drama first premiered, and now it's finally time to address those twincest rumors between Cheryl and Jason Blossom.
Rivedale star Madelaine Petsch stopped by the Et studios for a Live Facebook interview on Wednesday, and the redheaded beauty spilled her thoughts on whether or not Cheryl and Jason's feelings for each other were ever more than just sibling affection.
"We [in the Riverdale cast] thought [the term twincest] was funny in the beginning, but now actually people genuinely believe it," the 22-year-old actress explained. "We never were incestuous and it's honestly like a joke that we played around with on set that probably was taken a little bit too far."

One year before “The Virgin Suicides” and four before “Lost in Translation,” Sofia Coppola moved away from an acting career she never wanted to have to telling her first stories as a director. Her 1998 film “Lick the Star” shows off the type of visual storytelling Coppola would come to make for herself: The slow-motion jump cuts, stylized performances and pitch-perfect choice of punk music.

It’s no secret that Darren Lynn Bousman has had his sights set on both the Leprechaun franchise and Flowers In The Attic for some time now, but why haven’t his wishes been honored yet? Or better yet, why were they written off? Instead of giving Bousman the reigns in terms of full rights to remake/reboot the properties how he sees fit, both projects were optioned to different creative teams. WWE and director Zach Lipovsky gave us last year’s abysmal Leprechaun: Origins, while Lifetime is now on their Fourth Flowers In The Attic movie. I don’t claim to know the Hollywood game, but still, given the status of both projects, one has to ask – what the fuck?
Let’s start with Bousman’s take on Leprechaun, a franchise near and dear to the deviant filmmaker’s heart. Instead of giving the rights to the man behind...

Jason Lewis is so dreamy, even his sister wants to have sex with him. Well, at least that's the case in his two new Lifetime films, "If There Be Thorns" and "Seeds Of Yesterday," the third and fourth adaptations of V.C. Andrews' irresistibly twisted novels. While the actor is no stranger to sex scenes -- as seen by his work as Samantha Jones' hunky boyfriend Smith Jerrod on "Sex and the City" -- things were a little different this time around. Of all the questions that have been born from Secrets and Lies‘ central murder mystery, here is the one that lingers in my mind the most: “Why isn’t anyone else doing anything?”

Following the success of Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind, Lifetime is back with the final two installments in the Dollanganger film series. And the two films -- If There Be Thorns and Seeds of Yesterday -- look like they took a note or two from the Fifty Shades of Grey film.
In the teaser, James Maslow’s abs are on full display as he looks through his closet for some (unnecessary) clothes to wear. The former Dancing with the Stars contestant plays Bart Sheffield, one of two half-brothers unaware of his parents’ incestuous relationship. But secrets in this family are hard to keep.
