Back in 1990, legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley – whose many horror movie credits include The Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, Witchtrap, Graduation Day, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Nightmare Sisters, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and Silent Night, Deadly Night – made her own hour-long, horror-themed workout video. A release that was appropriately called Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout… and which has now been given a special edition Blu-ray release! Copies can be purchased at This Link.
Directed by Kenneth J. Hall, Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout has the following synopsis: After a nice shower, Linnea does some warm-up stretches and then goes for a run. She encounters some flabby zombies who follow her back to the house, where she leads them in some poolside aerobic routines. Later she unwinds by inviting some girlfriends over for a slumber party and some exercise.

Since any New York City cinephile has a nearly suffocating wealth of theatrical options, we figured it’d be best to compile some of the more worthwhile repertory showings into one handy list. Displayed below are a few of the city’s most reliable theaters and links to screenings of their weekend offerings — films you’re not likely to see in a theater again anytime soon, and many of which are, also, on 35mm. If you have a chance to attend any of these, we’re of the mind that it’s time extremely well-spent.

Alain Corneau’s Série noire has been restored and brought to screens. See the trailer here.
“Welcome to Metrograph: A to Z” has a stacked weekend of Antonioni, Tashlin and more.

Before we bid the month of April farewell, we still have one final batch of Blu-ray and DVD releases coming our way this Tuesday to look forward to. Scream Factory is set to release a double dose of classic horror with The Brain and Tarantula, and Vinegar Syndrome is keeping busy with their terror-inducing trio of titles: The Corruption of Chris Miller, Grandmother’s House, and Darkroom.
Kino Lorber is also giving Hannibal (2001) the 4K treatment this week, and if you happened to miss them during their limited releases, both The Hole in the Ground and Level 16 are very much worth your time.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for April 30th include City of the Vampires, Deadly Crush, Emanuelle and Francoise, Death Warmed Up, and Motel Mist.
The Brain
Imagine a pulsating mass of gray matter, expanding in size and strength as it takes control of human minds and devours human bodies.

When people think of VHS-era scream queens three names come to mind: Linnea Quigley, Michelle Bauer and Brinke Stevens – the threesome of fear that sliced and seduced a generation of gorehounds and whose greatest hits can finally be seen in HD in this set, The Best of 80s Scream Queens, which comes from the schlock-lovers at 88 Films. This charming and chilling collection, perfect for addicts of excessive violence, gratuitous nudity and breathtaking bloodshed, all stem from the hand (and mind) of legendary director David DeCoteau and each nostalgic pot-boiler is packed with an enthusiastic fondness for breast-baring babes and skull-bashing set pieces!

Melody (Quigley), Marci (Stevens) and Mickey (Bauer) are your typical geeky college girls who just can’t seem to find a man. When their fellow sorority sisters leave to have parties and spend time with their significant others, the nerdy trio are left to their own devices and decide to have a little party of their own. With slim pickings in the male department, they call the equally geeky Kevin (Gabai) to come over with his friends Freddy (Vaughter) and Duane (William Dristas – in his only role). I refuse to begin this recap of Saturday Night Live‘s Season 41 premiere by saying that host Miley Cyrus came in like a wrecking ball. That would simply be too obvious, and also not entirely accurate, considering her opening monologue proved to be a good-natured (and pretty funny) takedown of the Maddening But Ultimately Fleeting Newsmakers of Summer 2015.

Fox’s Scream Queens is one of several horror shows currently competing for TV fans’ eyeballs. There was only one point in last night’s episode when two Real Sorority Sisters of Delta Delta Delta (Can I Help-Ya Help-Ya Help-Ya) were in the same room at the same time. That is when Kim Richards, wearing a one-shouldered muumuu from the Mrs. Roper for Sears collection, got into Brandi Glanville’s bed to watch an episode of Eddie & LeAnne: I Know That My Heart Will Go On: An E! Original Production by Ryan Seacrest. Otherwise, everyone was off on their own. Yes, everyone was sending their children away to college. This season has been doing that a lot: scattering our women to the four winds so we don’t get to see them interact. In the last 24 hours, my email inbox has been stuffed with messages on supporting the cancellation of VH1's new series "Sorority Sisters." While I understand and appreciate the movement, I thought I'd chime in and say that, shows like "Sorority Sisters" have been VH1's bread and butter for some time now. In fact, the potential riches in creating series that target black women audiences certainly hasn't been lost on the network. For example, as previously noted on this blog, its top 5 shows in terms of total viewers, from December 2012 to October 2013 were: "Love & Hip-Hop: Atlanta," "T.I. &...

Zombeavers is a film about murderous, undead beavers, and very few people would go to see a film about murderous, undead beavers expecting a subtle cinematic masterpiece. What the film’s knowingly ludicrous premise does call for is cartoonish gore, hordes of mutated rodents, and as much “beaver” innuendo as possible. Luckily, first-time director Jordan Rubin delivers on all these counts.
The film opens with a lovely, tongue-in-cheek cliché: a rogue canister of neon green toxic waste, escaping downriver. Fast forward a few days, and a trio of Sorority sisters, Jenn, Mary and Zoe, head to a remote lakeside cabin. Before long, the girls are joined by three male counterparts: cue lots of nudity, sex, and “beaver” jokes. The first encounter with an actual beaver comes after one of the girls, Jen, finds a particularly savage specimen lurking in the bathroom. The beast is swiftly dispatched and its body left outside in a trash bag.

Scream Queen Linnea Quigley is no stranger to shock and splatter. The 1980s horror icon, inducted into Fangoria Magazine’s “Hall of Fame,” has been possessed, returned from the dead, pierced on antlers by a killer Santa and was even trapped inside Freddy Krueger’s chest. Coming to DVD from rapidheart.com this Tuesday, January 14, 2013 are three of the actresses long-lost cult classic terror-fests, Nightmare Sisters, Deadly Embrace, and the gruesome Murder Weapon.

One of the first and most popular “Scream Queens” from the 1980’s was a girl from Iowa who moved to Los Angeles in the late 70’s with her family. Linnea Quigley started with small roles in even smaller films but she built up her resume and got her big break playing “Trash” in Return of the Living Dead (1985). Since then, she has amassed a wealth of films that cemented her status as a B-movie queen, including roles in such films as Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama (1988), Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988), Nightmare Sisters (1988), Night of the Demons (1988), Vice Academy (1989), and many others.
Linnea, along with fellow B-movie actresses Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer were responsible for establishing their Scream Queen status in the 80’s with a prolific resume of horror, sci-fi, and cult film appearances that hasn’t really been equaled since. Whenever anyone...

So here is a slight change of pace – I'll be branching out into other areas apart from Doctor Who, including film franchises, TV shows and comedies. How's about kicking off with a scary movie series then? Newbies be warned – there are so many spoilers in this article, that Doctor Who's River Song would explode with smug rage.
By the middle of the 1990s, the horror film had seemingly died for good. Just like Dracula slowly rotting away to a skeleton, the horror genre had slowly ebbed away for the past decade or so. Hammer Horror classics from the 1960s and 1970s had given way to popular horror franchises in the 1980s such as Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street, but even by the mid-1990s, these had seemingly vanished into the ether. However, acclaimed director Wes Craven along with Kevin Williamson were to breathe new life into the rotting genre.

Screaming in High Heels comes from the devoted mind of journalist and filmmaker Jason Paul Collum, whose interest in all things Slumber Party Massacre led him to become a fascinated fan of women who star in horror movies. In Screaming in High Heels: The Rise and Fall of the Scream Queen Era, Collum details the horror movie careers of the three women who coined the phrase “Scream Queen”: Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens, and Michelle Bauer.
Collum is a great storyteller, and it’s evident from his previous documentary on Scream Queens, Something to Scream About, that he’s extremely interested in these women’s vocations as a phenomenon of horror fandom. Screaming in High Heels isn’t about Linnea, Brinke, and Michelle as...

Back in the 1980s, director David DeCoteau helped turn Linnea Quigley, Brinke Stevens and Michelle Bauer into the scream queen icons they remain today with movies like Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-o-rama and Nightmare Sisters. This year, he has brought the trio back together for 1313: Cougar Cult, and talked to Fango about the reunion and some updates on his other upcoming features.

David DeCoteau has just completed filming on his new film, Cougar Cult, a project that reunites him with the original “Scream Queens” of horror — Brinke Stevens, Linnea Quigley and Michelle Bauer. The is the first time the ladies have been cobbled together in the same flick since DeCoteau’s 80′s favorites Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama (retrospective here) and Nightmare Sisters.
Being the sweetheart that she is, Brinke has sent Killer Film two photos from the set. Damn! These ladies are still smokin’ hot!! As soon as we get news about an official release date, we will make sure all of our Killer Fans hear about it.

David DeCoteau Legendary scream queen Brinke Stevens (Teenage Exorcist, Haunting Fear) announced on her official Facebook wall that this week she is reteaming with cult director David DeCoteau (Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama) to star in "Cougar Cult".
Cougar Cult starts filming this week. The film will reunite Brinke Stevens with fellow scream queen alum Linnea Quigley (Night of the Demons, The Return of the Living Dead) and Michelle Bauer (Nightmare Sisters, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers).
It's nice to see David DeCoteau getting back to his scream queen roots after spending over a decade with scream twinks in such efforts as Voodoo Academy and The Brotherhood. Or maybe given the title, he plans on merging the two together in one film? We'll just have to wait and see....

One Halloween I was hunting through a Blockbuster for the perfect thriller movie; one that would be suspenseful but not too scary, sexy but not exploitative. After seeing one too many box covers featuring axe-wielding maniacs, screaming girls in bikinis, or screaming, axe-wielding maniacs in bikinis, I was about to abandon all hope; then I discovered a delightful film called Voodoo Academy.
A supernatural thriller set at an all-boys college, this film featured a suspenseful, original plot, supplemented and emphasized by a gorgeous cast of stunning young men wearing very few clothes; and after seeing this movie and thoroughly enjoying it, I set out in search of more features from the film's talented director, David Decoteau.
This Candian filmmaker has made nearly 90 films since the 1980s, and--after directing fun horror flicks like Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowlarama, he turned his attention to making horror movies for girls, such as The Brotherhood series,...

From Jason Paul Collum, director of October Moon and November Son, comes a documentary detailing the rise and fall of the 80's Scream Queen era in which his mentor Brinke Stevens (Haunting Fear) will be partaking with a bevy of familiar faces from the 80's horror era in:
Screaming in High Heels: The Rise & Fall of the Scream Queen Era
During the video boom of the 1980s, three ladies (and a small group of energetic filmmakers) headlined upwards of 10 low-budget horror films per year, fending off men in rubber monster suits, pubescent teen boys, and deadly showers. As a result of their unintended cult fame, they were flown all over the world, dined with President Regan, and built mini-empires of their own. Then it all came crashing down. This documentary follows these accidental actresses on how smart they were to play stupid.
In addition to Brinke Stevens, other participants...

Love him or hate him, one thing is for sure: Director David DeCoteau is a legend in the horror entertainment field. That can't be denied. He's the man responsible for 80's camp classics such as Nightmare Sisters and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama. Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama gathered a once in a lifetime B movie cast including Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (Grandma's House), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Robin Stille (The Slumber Party Massacre), Hal Havins (Night of the Demons), and George 'Buck' Flower (They Live). While Sorority Babes was one of the most downright fun horror films of the 80's, another element stood out about the film, one that would go on to shape and define David DeCoteau's career. See, David DeCoteau cast this complete unknown named Andras Jones in the lead role. Right off the bat, you could...

Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Assault of the Killer Bimbos, Dr. Alien, Puppet Master III: Toulon's Revenge, Ghost Writer, Circuitry Man, Creepozoids, Dream A Little Evil, Nightmare Sisters, etc. These are all films that 80's horror fans grew up watching either through USA's Up All Night, though Cinemax or Showtime, through their love of either Linnea Quigley or Brinke Stevens, or through looking through the seemingly endless shelves at the good old video stores of yesteryear. Royce Mathew was involved in every single one of these films functioning, as he put it himself, either through "custodial work and production assisting - to (in no order) writing, editing, costumes, props, art direction, construction, directing, producing, sound, special effects and publicity". We took a moment to pick apart Royce's brain on working on all these legendary B movies and then got a bit serious to let him discuss an ongoing legal...

What horror fan hasn't had fond memories of watching veteran scream queen Brinke Stevens in either The Slumber Party Massacre, Nightmare Sisters, Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Haunting Fear, Sigma Die, Cheerleader Massacre, Teenage Exorcist, etc.? However, Brinke has been working for 30 years now! She has an incredible volume of work behind her and has earned her legendary status in the genre. However, I am sure at some point, she is going to be slowing down and not working as frequently as she once did. So what does that mean for horror fans? We need a new scream queen for this generation that emulates this legendary actress, but yet is distinctive in her own right.
I think this generation has found such an actress in the form of Devanny Pinn. Let's examine the evidence. Both actresses have similar looks. Both actresses have similar body types. Both actresses share similar career paths.

Bisexual Horror: Gaze and Desire in David DeCoteau’s The Sisterhood by Heidi Martinuzzi
Traditionally, horror films have been made for a straight, white, male audience. Most film studios release their horror movies with young males, aged 14-22, in mind and tend to create storylines to accommodate their perceived tastes; gratuitous amounts of blood and sexualized female nudity. While mainstream cinema has included gay storylines and filmmakers in increasing numbers in recent years, horror movies have invariably catered to a static audience and excluded gay characters (except as villains and comic relief.) This reluctance to sell and make queer horror movies has relegated those films to low-budget releasing and production budgets through select studios like Here!...

One of the things I love best about the internet is that people post movie-related lists and then other people get to comment on all the things the lists did wrong (or, sometimes, did right). Today, in anticipation of this week's Sorority Row, Moviefone posted a list of the ten sexiest scream queens. It's a fun list, and it's wise enough to go all the way back to Fay Wray (King Kong) and Janet Leigh (Psycho), and it includes two essentials: Jamie Lee Curtis (Halloween) and Marilyn Burns (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre). It also includes Shannon Elizabeth, a dubious choice for films like Jack Frost, 13 Ghosts and Cursed (although I'm glad someone has thrown Cursed back into the ring; it's silly but it's also sexy, well-acted and very sharply directed by Wes Craven).
I like Adrienne Barbeau as a choice, too, even though she's really only a "scream queen" in one movie,...

Debbie Rochon, often described as a scream queen herself, wrote in an article originally published in Gc Magazine that "a true Scream Queen isn't The Perfect Woman. She's sexy, seductive, but most importantly 'attainable' to the average guy. Or so it would seem." Nastassja Kinski Films: To the Devil a Daughter (1976) [1] Cat People (1982) [2] The Day the World Ended (2001) [3] Inland Empire (2006) [4] Kinski will always be remembered for the iconic photograph shot by Richard Avedon (with a snake coiled around her body) and her role in Paul Schrader's (not so good) remake of Cat People. Needless to say, it was a hit at the box office and Kinski deservingly received a Saturn Award for Best Actress. Caroline Munro Films: The Abominable Dr. Phibes (1971) [5] Dr. Phibes Rises Again (1972) [6] Dracula A.D. 1972 [7] Maniac (1980) [8] Faceless (1987) [9] Demons 6 (1989) [10] Caroline Munro seduced audiences in her Hammer roles in films like Dracula A.D. 1972, but for gore hounds,...
