The Most Brilliant Failure In Television History, Hands Down.
magicinthenight31 August 2005
I was lucky enough to have actually caught this CBS pilot. It, no exaggeration, was the definition of television at it's best. The two leads were incredibly appealing, while the supporting actors were just as brilliant. Top acting honors go to Marcia Cross, Tim Daly, and Eve Gordon-they carried the whole series. The romance, comedy, and drama all blended together perfectly. An incredible television show! The show just had this ripe and juicy richness to it. You will definitely not be disappointed if you watch it! Tim Daly, Eve Gordon, Marcia Cross, Rita Taggart, And Michael Alldredge star. A Must See For Someone Who Loves Brilliant Television.

I Loved this Movie/TV Series

I found this story absolutely compelling About the trials of young love How with your first love you never really can let go of it .The music and the way it captures the essence of the sixties is brilliant.Superb acting by main characters with some wonderful dialog. This movie will make you laugh hard one moment and cry the next.If you liked Forrest Gump and the way that was done with the backwards and forwards throughout the years and scenes you will absolutely adore this in fact I would go so far to say as this is actually better ..I saw this made for TV movie in 1988 when I was 18.I am now 30 and still searching for a copy ..If you can get hold of it ..hang on to it and ENJOY ..its a wonderful film... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE get the series on DVD .....When will it happen I've been searching for it for years

Excellent TV doesn't last long
kent-1114 February 2001
When there is an excellent TV show such as this, I try to watch and tape it. They almost certainly will disappear or change to mush (as Chicago Hope did).

They don't come much better in concept or execution than Almost Grown -- writing, acting, production were all on the highest level.

This show is on my short list of fine failures (also Against the Grain; EZ Streets; The Fitzpatricks; and a few others)

I remember this one

What a great series this would have made if the TV execs had any brains. I was in high school when it aired and it was a magical mixture of romance and remembrance. Tim Daly has always been one of my favorite actors and this series was for the most part the biggest reason for that. Too bad it was canned. Wings was great but Tim really could have shined with this promo series. I can see that he is still busy with work, but I hjaven't seen him on the screen for years.

I wish I could stop typing but I need to fill ten lines of comment for this freaking comment to appear!!! Anyone else find that annoying?

I am sick of reality TV and I hope the execs are sick of these idiot cop shows and hospital series. TV is getting old.

I loved this show!

I was shocked when this show was taken off the air. They leave rags like Joey on two seasons and yank shows like Almost Grown off before it had a chance. I had hoped it would last a few years. These characters were soul mates and belonged together. Their journey was a sweet and wonderful stroll through the ups and downs of love.

What a great show with great acting and chemistry between the actors.

I remember clearly being in shock when it was pulled off the air.

I would love to get copies of the episodes that are available.

If anyone knows about them can you email me?

Thanks very much!

I was in an episode.
fosgood17 September 2007
I used to do extra work in L.A. and did an episode that was filmed at the V.A. on Wilshire Blvd and it was supposed to be an army base in New Jersey. I had long hair back then and was supposed to be someone who was drafted into Vietnam and was going through army induction. They did a closeup of my face for about five seconds which was cool and it got aired. I am trying to find a copy of this. If anyone has one please reply to this message.I have to have 10 lines of text to post this. This is line 9, and this is line 10. That didn't work either. The Emmys were great tonight. OK, it is still complaing about the number of lines.

Quality Programming & Writing at its best...

This TV series had such a huge impact on me as a teenager, and has remained with me to this day.. I remember being mesmerized by the story lines and the characters. It was also my first glimpse of an actor who I immediately fell in love with, Tim Daly.

His presence on screen was unforgettable and the brilliant acting from the other actors/ actresses was also excellent. The chemistry between the lead characters, was magnificent, and had you coming back for more, time after time. I became completely involved with the highs and lows that these people went through in their lives and the excellent music that was used, also heightened my awareness of the surroundings and the emotions that Norman and his family and friends went through over the years.

The flash backs were done tastefully and never lacked conviction... I always remember being sad when we (the viewers) returned to the "Present Day Storyline"

I would compare this series to the impressive & thought provoking "Wonder Years" and also to the film "Forrest Gump"..

I can only hope that one day the TV executives will show it again in the UK, as I would record it and watch it over and over again.

The Best
melissaowczarzak23 January 2006
I was in 11th grade when this came out. Of course I was dealing with all the issues of a 16-17 year old, love ,sex, drama, friendship... I was also obsessed w/ the 1960s culture and Tim Daly! This show was perfect for me. I still remember my Dad driving me to high school and hearing the radio ads... "Do you remember where you were when you heard this song for the first time?" I could hardly wait for the movie and the TV show just got better every week. My favorite was the Christmas episode. I'm so shocked to see all the awesome reviews on this site! Glad to see I'm not alone. This was TV drama at it's absolute best. The acting was amazing. The plots exciting and so moving, I was sucked in every week. Tim Daly is still gorgeous and a hell of an actor, but I long to see him as Norman again! And hear that hot James Brown song they used as the theme-- the best!!!!

One of my fondest TV memories!
Sirius_Fan22 March 2007
I watched this show when I was in High School and I remember that it was on very late here in Portugal but I always stayed up to watch it. I absolutely fell in love with all the characters, especially Tim Daly (who I'm very sorry to say didn't become the star I thought he would!).

I go to amazon at least once a month to see if they have edited it yet on DVD but so far... I guess they feel it's more important to sell DVDs of the Simple Life! Of course amazon.co.uk doesn't make the DVDs but since they're the ones I buy the DVDs from, they're the ones I insult when I can't find one!

I'm really hoping to get this series on DVD so I can watch it over and over again!

I thought this series was ace - Tim Daley's character reminded me of myself with his obsession for music and i loved the flashbacks and everything - it's a sin that they never made a second series although it was never given a chance in the UK being shown desperately late at night. I nearly named my eldest daughter Anya but it didn't go down too well with the rest of the family! One ting that I would like to know, however, is if there is anyone out there who can tell me what song that Norman and Suzie were listening to in the car when Norman said 'it's that same three chords' or words to that effect I'd love to know. Sounded like John Cougar Mellencamp or Tom Petty to me but I just don't know and was never able to find out! Paul

Brilliantly acted love story spanning 3 decades. The best!
norway18 March 2000
The lives of two people who know they are meant for each other, begins when they are 40-ish with children, about to divorce, yet still the inseparable pair. Their life story is told in flash backs triggered by "special songs" that appear on the radio. Time goes back to the Vietnam War, back to the 80s, and sometimes to the 70s. The actors are superb in their transformations from teenagers to middle aged people. The focus is always on the couple. Even when she is about to remarry, a bond between the two "soulmates" has never been completely broken, and the "new fiance" can't go through with the wedding. One scene is particularly gripping: Barricading himself into his College Radio Station during the Vietnam War, playing the same (forbidden) song over and over again, "he" knew that "she" would come to him, and she did. The same scene was repeated some 20 years later--and it still worked! TV drama doesn't get any better than this!

This was one of the more brilliant failures in TV History
revolutioner19 March 2003
It just didn't get boffo ratings for CBS on Monday nights, so they canned it. Networks didn't give too many quality shows a chance to develop an audience like they do today. Tim Daly and Eve Gordon were just perfect in this drama which frequently flashed back to this married couples days in college. Unforgettable!
