Hilarious!
einezcrespo5 May 2006
I love this anime! I was laughing my head off with all of the jokes and the violence (mostly from Akane Ranma's reluctant but short tempered "fiancee")is so slapstick however Ranma does deserve it but he does try his best to make amends...clumsily. The main character Ranma goes to China to train only to fall into the cursed Jusenkkyo Spring and turns into a girl when splashed by cold water. From then on it's pure chaos one after another. Among the stand outs are the deranged brother and sister duo of Kuno and Kodachi, the sexy Shampoo, the pervert Happosai all causing trouble for our hero/heroine. However it is Ranma's selfish father Genma who winds up being the culprit for the mess most of the time. If anyone want an anime that's funny, this is the one. It's cuter and better with the Japanese dub.

Ranma 1/2 is pure enjoyment.
shaiwilliamson18 January 2010
admittedly, I first picked up Ranma 1/2 when I was around twelve. I was in the library and searched desperately for something good to read. Then, I went to the Comic/Manga section and spotted this book. At my first few reads through the chapters I didn't really know what was going on, but I knew that I LOVED it. I even took it home for a few more reads over. Frankly, I wasn't getting anywhere. And then, about five months (I'm 16 now) ago my friend was watching some anime series and I remembered about this Manga. I couldn't remember what it was called, but recalled that the author was Rumiko Takahashi, creator of Inu Yasha. I Googled it, and then made a rash decision to watch all 161 episodes. At first I was a little thrown off by the 1990 graphics, but it didn't really matter in the end. No anime has ever made me laugh so hard and rewind, watch again. I once watched 45 consecutive episodes within a day. I don't know how I did it... but I couldn't stop. Eventually, after about two days, I grew obsessed. I even dreamt--as crazy as this sounds--about watching Ranma. Never have I found a series so enjoyable, so funny, and so heartwarming to watch. To this day 161 episodes are not enough to keep me satisfied. Of course the cliffhanger ending was enough to make me go bonkers, but the series alone was enough to make me continue reading.

Ranma 1/2 is about a boy named Ranma Saotome and his dad Genma Saotome. INTENSE martial artists. They are so intense, that they went to the ancient training grounds in China and became 'cursed'. The grounds were full of different pools of springs, and if you land in one, you take the shape of whatever drowned there when doused in cold water. For Genma, that was a PANDA, and for Ranma that was a... girl! It's a very crafty fun loving story. On top of that, Genma promises his friend that Ranma will marry one of his daughters to keep the Tendo dojo alive. 'Course the one he gets matched up with hates his guts and the feelings mutual. Obviously they start to like one another, but both way to stubborn to admit it. But.. Genma has a history of doing this. He promised Ranma to many girls.

Trust me. It's worth watching. It's humorous, heartwarming and all around amazing.

Most unique Martial Arts Anime in existence.
emasterslake16 December 2007
Taken place in Japan of the 80s-90s era. Soun Tendo and Genma Saotome are both Martial Artists of the "Anything Goes School of Martial Arts". Soun is a father of 3 daughters while Genma has only 1 son. They both agree that Genma's son: Ranma Saotome would marry one of Soun's daughters when the time comes. So that way the whole "Anything Goes School" will continue on.

By the time Ranma is 16, it was time for him to be acquainted with the Tendo family. Soun Tendo had no idea what Genma's son is like. But it very excited for one of his 3 daughters: Akane, Nabiki, & Kasumi will be the fiancé of Ranma. Only the Tendo family will learn that both Ranma & his dad have been cursed by the sacred hot springs of Jusenkyo in China. Genma was cursed with the form of a Panda and Ranma is cursed with the forms of a red haired busty girl. When douse with cold water, they turn into their cursed forms, but warm water will change them back to their original forms.

Soun Tendo at first was disappointed with all this, but after learning about their trip to China and how their curse forms work with water temperature. He finds it to be no big deal. Soun introduces Ranma to his 3 daughters and said he can pick either one of them to be his future bride. However Nabiki & Kasumi agreed that their youngest daughter Akane will make a fitting wife with Ranma. Akane didn't like the decision at all, and find this prearranged marriage to be a joke. And she finds Ranma's ability to turn into a girl to be perverted. Ranma didn't care too much about this prearranged marriage either. Because he wants to go back to China to find a curse spring that'll make him a whole male again.

Only problem is his dad refuses him to go back to China, when Genma's hoped for so long for his son to be the fiancé of one of Soun's daughters. To make a long argument short, Ranma & Genma now stay at the Tendo's house as honoree guests. Both Akane & Ranma don't want to get more involved together. But pretty soon they do start to care about each other. Even though they don't show that care to one another.

Made back 1989, based off of one of Japan's best selling Manga written & drawn by Rumiko Takahata. Who worked on the series from 1986-1996. Also a success in America, way before Anime became popular as it is today. The thing I like most about it is the theme of the series, the flow of the story, and the comedy which occurs frequently in each episode. Next to the comedy is action and romance. Since this is a martial arts related anime, you do see a lot of it in each episode.

Through out the whole series, you'll see Ranma & Akane's relationship grow. As well as encounters with other rivals and other fiancés that create a huge and complicated love triangle. Those who like Inuyusha, Urusei Yatsura, & Rumiko's other works will admire this one a lot. In my opinion this is one of Rumiko's best works.

Remember this is only Season 1 of the 7 season series. If you like the first 18 episodes, be sure to see the other 6 seasons of the "Ranma 1/2: Anything Goes School of Martial Arts" series.

Also this is a perfect Anime for dates or for someone's girlfriend.

An instant classic! A great anime! A masterpiece!
au_law20016 January 2005
What more can I say? This show is the best anime show I've seen and is perhaps the first one to get me into that genre among others. I first laughed at the title, because it sounded ridiculous, and I was new to this, and I was just a kid. And as I watched, I laughed even more, to learn this is worthwhile and a great show, a great love comedy or martial arts show. With references to ancient China and traditions, except turned upside down to bring hilarious and chaotic results! And the character are unforgettable, Kuno Tatewake, Ryoga who is stupid but my favorite character of the show! Mousse, Cologne, Happosai, Akane and Genma, and not to mention Ranma's other suitors, Shampoo, Kodachi, Ukyo, this came before Tenchi Muyo! to those who say harem anime was copied from Tenchi! Without a doubt, this is a very funny and memorable show brought to you by Rumiko Takahashi who also made Inu Yasha, Maison Ikkoku, Urusei Yatsura and Fire Tripper. Great show, recommended to all fans of the shows mentioned earlier. >>>>> 10/10

The best anime I've ever seen
tiffanyt3656 August 2013
Ranma 1/2 is possibly the best anime ever. (In my opinion) Witty humor, intense but exciting and entertaining fighting, and rare romantic moments that make you scream for more, this is a gem. Also for anime fangirls, there are many possibilities for couples (Poor Ranma... so many fiancés!) The humor is hilarious, the fights are awesome and the villains are devious and pretty frustrating. The only bad things in this show are: The frequent partial-nudity (Usually it's only breasts) and the slightly outdated animation. Otherwise, it's perfect! I'd recommend this to anyone who doesn't mind nudity and likes a good laugh. This is Rumiko's finest.

Now this isn't the kind of stuff America gives us.
staticsaber25 October 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Wow... I mean WOW this has got to be one of the best story's I've ever had the chance to read/watch. We all know this famous story. Two martial artist, a man and his son, go to train in the forbidden Cursed Springs and while ignoring their warnings they both fall in a spring each. The dad, Genma, the spring of drowned Panda. And 16 year old Ranma, the spring of drowned girl. Now with every splash of cold water they turn into the very being titled to the spring they landed in. Crazy enough yet? No, thats just the beginning. As if being one of the strongest teenagers to ever exist who turns into a female wasn't enough, Ranma has to deal with crazed martial arts teachers and hundreds of insane art styles, an insane high school principle, opponents right and left who have a score to settle with Ranma wither it be for messing up their life early on somehow or for "stealling" their loved ones. And speaking of loved ones, I've lost track of how many times a boy or a girl has fallen in love with Ranma. And not once has it been his fiancée, Akane. And thats just from the first few chapters/episodes of the series.

The story itself is amazing. I have never come across something so crazy, so bizarre, so... so... out of this world and yet its so down to Earth and believable... I can't even describe it to its fullest. Its just a charming story thats so easy to get into. What I like about it is the humor. Not once have I laughed out loud this much from a manga, and it doesn't have to try any of the stunts you would catch in Simpson's or something of the sort. I could read any part of the comic and I would be laughing from beginning to end. Another thing is the characters. Ranma, you would think making him too strong would be a set back but nooo... with every little problem the story throws at him he's doing his best just to survive half the time and his personality is that of a foolish young boy it would seem but when worst comes to worst he can be a calculating genius. And to think, of the hundreds of perverts in the show, Ranma who hates the idea of perverts all together is considered by everyone in his town, more so by Akane, the worst pervert to ever live. His father Genma, you would think the father character would blend in to the background right? Correct! But whenever he does have some spotlight... he just gives you more reasons to hate him yet at the same love him! You think you know the worst dad ever from an anime? You haven't met Genma. Ryoga, probably one of Ranma's greatest rivals and my favorite character (next to Ranma)... and probably one of the only people he can actually stand. Most likely the strongest character in the series but has two faults, one is his curse that turns him into a baby pig but his worst fault... is his lack of sense in direction! Then we have... you know, I could spend hours at the computer explaining all the characters, the story's, everything positive about it but that would be just pointless.

Check out the series if you haven't, NOW! You WILL NOT regret it! Though I would advise checking the comic out first. I like the anime, but I've had some trouble getting the series at a good price. And a small nitpick, the humor doesn't seem to translate to the anime as well as the manga. I think partly because the comic seems more cartoonish to me. But either way, its a win win! 10 out of 10!

Easily, the best anime I have ever seen....
Jose_Philipe7 October 2006
So i consider myself pretty big into the anime scene, with very few shows i simply WILL NOT WATCH.

this show, however, i would recommend to anyone.

Quite possibly the most Original series to date, it;s got just about everything i could ask for. A side story, so to speak, about an unconditional love that will NOT be admitted to, a very blatant comedy, and a very well put together voice acting cast (both Japanese and American translation).

If not for the terribly funny aspect to it, it would be, just another anime.

More or less, as i have noticed, a 'love it or hate it', very few people i have seen introduced to this series will end up with a distaste for it.

Original to the core, with everything you could ask for in an afternoon, bet the house on this series. I'm ready to ASSURE you that you will enjoy it.

Rumiko's masterpiece
Lady_Targaryen14 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
''Ranma ½" is my favorite anime by Rumiko Takahashi. The woman really knows how to entertain us with a good story, that is not only a comedy, but also an action anime. The main character of the story is Ranma Saotome, a teenager boy who is also an expert in martial arts. Ranma is engaged to Akane because of an arrangement of both fathers, who are great friends and trained together during many years.

Akane is the younger and most violent sister of the Tendo's: Kasumi is the oldest and is very sweet and Nabiki is the middle and loves to win money no matter what.

Ranma and Akane fight all the time, specially because both have a very bad temper, and when they discover that Ranma becomes a girl when splashed with cold water as well as his father becomes a panda, many new characters and situations starts to happen. They also discover the reason of the transformation: while fighting, Ranma and his father fell in a cursed river. But not only them had this kind of fate...

If you watched ''Ranma 1/2'' and liked, I would recommend you ''Inuyasha'' and ''Maison Ikkoku", two other good creations from Rumiko's hands.

Overrated
IkuharaKunihiko4 April 2005
Ranma and his father Genma were in China practicing Kung Fu fights over forbidden lakes. But they fell into those magic lakes and soon found out that, as a consequence, they were "cursed"; in touch with cold water Ranma would transform into a girl and Genma into a Panda. Only hot water could turn them back again. Back in Tokyo Mr. Tendo agreed with Genma to arrange a marriage with his daughter Akane and Ranma. But since Akane is the most popular girl among boys in school and Ranma always argues with her, their relationship is very problematic...

Having read so many positive comments about this anime ( like "Instant classic! A masterpiece!" )I was looking forward seeing it. I expected a genius comedy like "Tootsie", but got only a mild and tired anime. Now, I wont be naive and write something like "Worst anime ever!", but the fact remains that "Ranma 1/2" is only a good TV show that never made me laugh. Actually, it has more fights than humor. Too much excessive fights, about boys who battle each other to get a girl, Akane. Is this suppose to be a romantic comedy or "Dragonball"?

---------------

Truth be told, some ideas were very nice. For example, when Ranma is dreaming that he/she has become gay or when his/her father Genmo is reminding him that he is his son, and not his daughter. Or when Ranma says that he is going to marry himself. But at the same time I always expected something more. Since Ranma is a boy he should have used his ability to be a girl to influence other boys better. The biggest problem is an explosion of useless characters. I don't know what the purpose was to have other people that can transform too, especially when they transform to such stupid forms like a Panda, a pig, a cat or a duck. And that perverted old man that was always molesting girls and stealing their bra's was one of the most annoying anime characters ever. Ranma would always beat him up, and yet he would always appear in the next episode. Strange thing is that the author is a woman, Rumiko Takahashi. I mean no disrespect to her since she invented one of mine favorite animes ( shining "Inuyasha" )but her work here is just a good fantasy with some nice ideas. "Maison Ikkoku" is so much better and skilfuller!

An experiment in chaos
nkboundary17 June 2000
Warning: Spoilers
Ranma 1/2 is BY FAR one of the funniest series I have ever seen. In many ways it is Japan's answer to The Simpsons.

The creator, writers, and directors of this fine series show that the phrase "situation comedy" need not be a bad thing. While the plot itself sounds stupid (a boy who becomes a girl when splashed with cold water---I groaned myself when I heard it) the comedy that arises from this and the ailments and love interests of the others is organic and far far more varied than you would think. And it honestly only gets funnier as the series goes on and more and more characters are added, each of whom relates to the others in a unique way. There is NO excess baggage in this series---NO characters that are unique in name only and can be exchanged with others who are equally bland. Much like the Simpsons the secondary characters become as entertaining as the main ones and things progress---everybody has their own personality. Even Nabiki, who hardly ever has any lines, gets a clear personality of her own as the series goes on (and indeed, because of her sarcasm and imp-like nature she becomes one of my favorite characters.)

I do not wish to provide any spoilers to this fine series but suffice it to say that every episode is an exercize in chaos---just when you think that things can't get any more confusing they do.

Also I should point out that as the series goes on not all the comedy is based around the things that Ranma and the others change into (Ranma a girl, his father a panda, and there are others that I won't ruin...) UNLIKE the Simpsons the show has real heart---you CARE about the characters as they go on and you find that you root for Akane and Ranma's relationship (Though unlike the Simpsons you don't have very much philosophical humor, or biting social commentary that make that particular series great, which is a downside---though part of this might be because certain cultural references don't carry over from Japan.)

I have never given a 10 here before.

I give one now.

I don't adore You Ranma Saotome
jorgedavidguzmandelarosa17 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I don't adore Ranma Saotome, because he has a very clumsy and horroza comedy, he also has many lawsuits against his rivals, including his fiancée, Akane Tendo, also this anime is very clumsy, because it normalizes LGBT, physical abuse, curses of when they bathe with the cold water and they would never be cured of their curses, for this reason this anime was a failure for Japan, because it canceled the anime and it would never be popular like Inuyasha, I don't appreciate that anime. This is why I don't adore Ranma, Akane, Genma, Soun, Nabiki, Kasumi, Kodachi, Kuno, Shampoo, Mousse, Ukyo, Ryoga, Cologne and Hapossai because they are a team and a family of clumsy, mediocre, useless and hypocritical people, so they are losers. I don't adore you Ranma Saotome.

Hilarious combination of slapstick and romantic comedy
Jeff-15411 January 1999
Hilarious combination of slapstick and romantic comedy features two young martial artists, betrothed against their will by their fathers. Ranma, the boy, is cursed to change into a girl when splashed with cold water (he changes back with hot water.) Akane, the girl, is a tomboy with a violent temper. Their messed-up lives are further complicated with rival fiancees and would-be fiancees, etc. Lots of martial arts action, jealous rages, mistaken identities, and knockabout comedy with the occasional tender moment. The strong characterizations make this series a standout and a cult favorite. For more info, there are about a million sites on this series on the Web.

My memories of Fun Childhood!!
shantanur-1016216 June 2022
Its the best romcom anime series I had everseen. The characters and their voice actors are just out of the box and the humour they bring into the stories is simply astonshing. Thanks to Rumiko and Studio Deen for making such a humour, light hearted and romantic series.

Hey Studio Deen, if your reading this, I really urge you if you could finish the TV series as per the manga. Trust me lot of fans want it completed till the last chapter of the manga.

I really wish Rumiko Takashi someday decides to get them both married offically and we could see that in anime. I dont mind if they complete the anime in 2050 when I would be of 60 years.

Ranma you jerk!
teodor-huldt15 March 2015
Warning: Spoilers
---VERY MINOR SPOILERS ABOUT THE ENDING! VERY, VERY MINOR!---

Ranma ½ is like a bag of candy. It's got sweet candy, sour candy, liquorice, all types of yummy goodness. The bag is, however, also bottomless. You eat one, you eat two, three but sooner or later you get tired. There's just too much candy! That's how I feel about this show.

Don't get me wrong, I love Ranma! It's easily one of my favorite shows! The humor will break your sides, the characters are top-notch and the action is superb! None of the characters feel the same and their back stories are all equally absurd. The love triangles are just as fun and entertaining. Watching Ranma Saotome's life getting harder by 10 with each episode is tons of fun and the music accompanying it is delightfully cheesy. It's just sooo good! The show has but three flaws that kind of hold hands: its length, its character development and its ending. The show is way too long. It just goes on and on. It also has a great problem with the character development, more precisely the development of the relationships. Nothing in this show seem to go anywhere. The relationships stay pretty much the same throughout the series and it's really sad. The changes are minor. On top of this, there's the end-... hold on, let me rephrase that... On top of this, there's NO ending. It just stops, no conclusion at all.

But is Ranma ½ still worth it? Hell yes! The show is, despite its length, still amazingly funny, energetic and crazy. All of the characters are interesting and fun, the longer story arcs are fantastic and the action is constantly at it's highest level. Don't miss out on this great show! (Also, the manga is even better if you're into that. It has an actual ending and conclusion, giving it a slight advantage over the show. The art is also really beautiful!)

Curses, kendoists, and perverts -- Ranma has it all.
Gosunkugi12 July 2001
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a progressive Anime fan. I started out on Sailor Moon, and then went on to Dragonball Z. Then I stepped up to Animes with original plots, like Tenchi Muyo. Last year, a friend got me into Ranma 1/2. And I still owe him for that.

Recently, I made a top five Anime list. Ranma was at the top. Why? The amazing cast. From the money-grubbing cynical Nabiki to the arrogant poetry-spouting Kuno, to the Cute-Klepto Azusa Shiratori, Rumiko Takahashi has created characters that have a lot of chemistry. And, if you notice, there are little similarities/differences in certain characters. Firstly, most of them are very stubborn, which seems to be a common trait among creations of Rumiko. Also, take a note of this.... (POSSIBLE SPOILER AHEAD.)

Have you noticed that while Akane's cooking skills are horrible, Ranma's other suitors are excellent chefs? Kodachi, despite her tendencies to use paralysis and sleeping powder, is a great chef. Xian Pu (Shampoo) is mostly a delivery girl, but she has to have a bit of experience, and Ukyo is an okonomiyaki chef. That says it all.

(END SPOILER)

If you're looking for a good anime with laughs, action, and a little bit of romance on the side, go to Ranma 1/2. You won't be disappointed.

Great show
Tendo Soun receives a postcard from China indicating that his old friend, Saotome Genma, is returning from a training trip with his son, Ranma, to marry one of Soun's daughters to carry on the tradition of the Anything-Goes-School-of-Martial-Arts.

When Ranma arrives, Soun faints in shock when it's revealed to him that Ranma is actually a girl. Here's the catch, though: Ranma's not really a girl, but a boy with a Chinese curse, triggered by cold water while hot water reverses the effect.

Ranma is then given a choice of Soun's three daughters: sweet and demure Kasumi, money-grubbing Nabiki, or cute but violent Akane. Kasumi and Nabiki immediately pick Akane for Ranma, since "Akane hates boys, but Ranma's only half a boy." Akane doesn't like Ranma because he beat her at martial arts (he was a girl at the time), and Ranma doesn't like Akane because she's violent and "uncute." Ranma makes the crack that he's better built as a girl than Akane is, and Akane thanks him by crushing him with the dining table. A healthy start to a beautiful relationship. And this is only the beginning ...

Review

I love this thing. This was one of the first anime titles I saw, and it's still one of my all time favorites.

Ranma 1/2 is one of the funniest things I've ever seen, anime or otherwise. The scripting is great, a laugh a minute, and the situations posed to Ranma and the gang defy all senses of propriety, sanity, or gravity. The characters are all hilarious (and cute too), and help make the series more than just another teenage sitcom. There is no middle ground in Ranma 1/2, which helps create the simply BIZARRE conflicts between the characters. Beverly Hills, 90210 has nothing on Ranma 1/2 when it comes to complex relationships. Love triangles? Heck, try love three-dimensional parallelipideds strewn with secants, diagonals, and singularities.

The martial arts in Ranma 1/2 is also very good. Not very realistic, of course, but the fight scenes well executed enough that even a non-martial arts fan can get caught up in the action (kinda like what Jackie Chan does for martial arts on the silver screen). Of course, it doesn't hurt either that the animation is generally pretty good, especially for a TV series (the OAV series has even better animation). "Romantic" scenes are done well, too, never taking itself too seriously lest it turn into a soap opera.

Soundtrack is done well. Not too complex, not too fancy, but just what the scene needs to pack that extra punch. Of course, the OAV themes put out by Doco (the quintet consisting of the voice actresses for onna-Ranma, Shampoo, Kasumi, Nabiki, and Akane) are in my opinion at least as good as anything else out there.

Dubbing...well, the Japanese version is probably better, but who cares? Ranma 1/2 has some of the best dubbing I've ever heard. All the actors really put effort into their parts, and the voice matches are done amazingly well. In fact, I actually prefer some of the U.S. voices to the Japanese voices (Kuno and Nabiki).

All in all, thumbs up, especially the first season. You want a good time? Ranma 1/2 is the one for you.

Pretty good anime
Irishchatter10 September 2018
Warning: Spoilers
The Anime was quite good and entertaining. The characters were well done and I liked Ranma as a badass martial artist being stuck in a curse that changes him into a girl if he touches cold water. That kinda reminds me of something like if a mermaid is in human form and her legs touches water, she transforms back into a mermaid! I didn't realise I was making a H20 reference there lol!

Any ways I like that this anime has a simple easy story like I honestly loved hearing Ted Cole's voice as Tatewaki. The Shakespearean was spot on even if I'm not really a Shakespeare fan myself! I know Ranma has a few fiancees but why can't he be with Akane at all? Anyways they were the best couple in my personal opinon throughout the series!

Good anime, very entertaining! 8/10

I hate you Ranma Saotome
guzmanchumino12 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Don't ever let your kids watch this garbage, they'll only commit a repeat of the Columbine tragedy. Many people claim this OVA is funny, but that is like saying the Normandy invasion scene from Saving Private Ryan is amusing and even laughing at the story of the two 10-year-old boys who killed a toddler after abducting them in England. Seriously, don't let your kids watch this.

Cute and meaningful
unmeiwa22 January 2002
At first, I was reluctant to see Ranma ½ , having heard it described as a gratuitous slapstick comedy, but I've changed my mind.

Ranma is one of the cutest and dearest series you will ever watch. On the surface, it is about a young man with a terrible, but comical curse who has a fiancée he is not too fond of. That in itself (the curse) is extraordinary, but the meaningful characters make Ranma ½ so much more.

In Ranma, things are not always what they seem, and besides the protagonist's dilemma, there's Akane, Ranma's fiancée. If I have to name my favorite character of all time, it must be Akane. (Much of this review is due to her.) Although Akane seems to be only a girl of violent temperament, she is really, deep down, gentle and eager to be more feminine and dear. Her hidden character glimmers through sometimes during the show, like when she tells Ranma something to the effect of, "I know you're not telling the truth when you say I'm cute, but I'm just happy you said it." (Ranma's bewildered facial reaction is, 'she really is cute'). Akane's model is her eldest sister, Kasumi, who is the epitome of Japanese feminine grace and beauty. (The show also focuses on Ranma and Akane's growing affection/love for each other.)

Of course, what would Ranma ½ be without the humor and the wit of which it has been so lauded for? The host of magically-cursed humans, especially the panda, is very cute and funny, and the fantastically silly Tendo-dojo is a place of endless fiancé and family fights (literally). There are many plays on words that non-Japanese speakers would miss (like how Ranma's last name foreshadows his curse, and Akane's name means crimson, scarlet). There are some gratuitous displays that would make some people blush, but you must keep in mind that Japanese view nudity in a different, less severe way, than the West.

I have seen an episode of Ranma ½ in English dubbed, and I recommend that you *never* see this version. The dubbing does no justice to the characters, especially Ranma and Akane, making them too forceful. If you have the means, see the original version or the subtitled version and enjoy the nuances of the voices.

I hate this STUPIDEST anime
jorgeguzmanh23 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
This anime is very mediocre, because it has an exaggerated padding, also Ranma, Akane, Genma, Soun, Nabiki, Kasumi, Kodachi, Kuno, Shampoo, Mousse, Ukyo, Ryoga, Cologne and Happosai are a mediocre team and family, for This is why I hate this movie because they fight a lot and they don't make amends and they don't accept that they behaved badly, and they prefer to normalize physical abuse, and they prefer to be spiteful and grumpy and hurt each other, I prefer to leave those mediocre ones who suffer and that I would never return to them, and that they better rot in darkness and solitude. DAMNED Ranma ½.

I don't want be a pacifist with these silly characters: Ranma, Akane, Genma, Soun, Nabiki, Kasumi, Kodachi, Kuno, Shampoo, Mousse, Ukyo, Ryoga, Sasuke, Cologne and Hapossai and I want to be rot in the darkness and loneliness.

Hilarious show.

If there is one good way to describe Ranma 1/2 (Nibun No Ichi), it would be absolutely HILARIOUS. The interaction between characters, and many of the characters' backgrounds are unbelievable-- There are so many odd characters in the series which you grow a liking for. It also mixes martial arts elements into, akin to Dragonball Z, except much more smoothly-animated. The combination of interesting fights with equally interesting characters makes this show one of the best, in my opinion.

Greatest Anime Series EVER!!!
Divine Shadow11 March 2002
Where to start, where to start?!? Ranma 1/2 is possibly the greatest Anime series ever produced, written by the ever talented Rumiko Takahashi, based on the MANGA of the same name. It has it all, romance, comedy, and the GREATEST CAST OF CHARACTERS TO HIT MEDIA SINCE THE "A-Team!!!" But seriously though, Ranma 1/2 follows the plot of a young japanese boy going through an identity crisis of sorts. You see, whenever Ranma Saotome is splashed with cold water he, becomes a 'she'. This is all due to some

strange Chinese Curse, that he acquired on a training trip through China. The meat and bones of the series deal with Ranma's attempts to cure himself while dealing with numerous fiancees' none of his choice I might add. You see, Ranma's father is a bit of a heel. Genma Saotome, who takes the form of a giant Panda

when wet has eveidently arranged for Ranma to merry into the family of his(Genma's) closest friend Soun Tendo. Soun ole' boy gets a little more than he bargained for. In addition to being promised to one of Soun's daughters, Ranma has also been promised to at least 3 others. In the

end Soun decides it best to give Ranma his daughter Akane, whom at first, shares Ranma's extreme dislike for the entire situation. What makes Ranma 1/2 so great is the characters, and their very interesting personal relationships. The chemistry between Ranma and the rest of the cast is adorable. For example, Ranma while on the outside, rejecting Akane, deeply loves her, this

makes for a very heart-warming main plotline. In addition to the deep dramatic overtones, Ranma happens to be very funny. If you

can stand japanese slapstick, mixed with heartwarming drama, I

suggest you do as I did and START WATCHING RANMA IMMEDIATELY!!

guzmandelarosa-8405313 March 2022
Ranma ½ has a STUPIDEST comedy just like the Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad, The Kings of the hill and Futurama. The all characters of Ranma ½ likes the Bad jokers and they don't know the differences of the good and evil. I Hate this anime because is totally silly. DAMNED Ranma ½.

Ranma's life may be a living nightmare... but it's pure entertainment for us!
SSJAniFan4 July 2003
I simply picked up a copy of the Ranma 1/2 OAVs since I had some extra money when I was picking up my usual copy of a DBZ DVD(The Draw, to be precise). I had heard about Ranma and the comments were positive ones, and having read about the episodes in my Viz catalog I decided to try it out. When I popped the OAV video into my VCR, I never knew that when I was done I would be laughing my head off.

Now, I own half of the OAVS, one of the films, 4 Ranma DVD boxsets(seasons 2-5), and a ton of videos and DVDs, as well as about one third of the manga. Ranma's great. The weird, but awesome, fighting is just the icing on the cake. What we really have is Ranma trying to not get his rear handed to him by crazy rivals, Akane bashing Ranma's head in, Ryoga trying to find where in the world he is, Shampoo gloomping Ranma in a bear-hug that would probably strangle Arnold Schwarzenegger, and near-blind Mousse, who mistakes Ranma, Shampoo, Akane, and everyone else for just about everything. With this laugh-out loud silliness, it's obvious you know you're watching something great.

I think the best thing about the entire series is that I can really relate to Ranma(well, aside from the curses and stuff). He has a fear of a certain type of animal due to..... childhood circumstances, he feels like everyone uses him, blames him for things even if it's not his fault, he doesn't have many friends, and his father cares jack squat for him. This makes Ranma really empathetic for me, something most anime characters don't usually do.

Shockingly, one character I like in this is voo-doo fixated Hikaru Gosunkugi. I like the fact that he's not the typical Ranma rival who goes out and confronts Ranma directly. He's even able to actually have some effect with his plans. Of course, said plans usually backfire on him....

Finally, the show introduces just about the cutest anime character ever, Shampoo! Every time she purrs out "ailen," it makes me melt......

BOTTOM LINE: Watch Ranma 1/2! You don't know what you're missing if you don't!
