People may be surprised to learn that staying out of the ocean won’t guarantee their safety from sharks. In fact, a dip in a river or pond could lead to an encounter with one of the most aggressive sharks in the world: the bull shark. Strangely enough, though, the Carcharhinus leucas doesn’t show up in sharksploitation movies anywhere near as much as its larger and more popular cousin, the great white. Many don’t even know of its existence until they hear of a sighting or attack in an unlikely place.
Jaws led to great whites becoming the face of shark horror. Of course, there are exceptions — Deep Blue Sea features bio-engineered mako sharks, and Syfy went through a period of unleashing one variety of mutant shark after another — yet as a whole, sharksploitation prefers great whites. Then in 2003, TBS Superstation mixed things up by having a bull...

Grab your iced coffee and a spray tan—Bama Rush is getting the documentary treatment. Rush Week at the University of Alabama, which has become a viral sensation on TikTok, will be subject of a new doc from Vice Studios, according to Variety. For the uninitiated, Bama Rush follows the highly competitive and slightly deranged process of sorority recruitment week at the university. According to Al.com, over 2,300 students—mostly women, mostly white—received bids from the 17 sororities that participated this year. Of the students who accepted bids, only nine percent of them self-identified as racial or ethnic minorities. On Aug. 12, the New York Times confirmed that a Bama Rush...

Randy Jackson won't be returning to "American Idol" next year. The longtime judge (and later mentor) has announced that he's exiting the Fox reality series after 13 seasons: “I’m proud to have been a part of a series that discovered some incredible artists and will go down in history as one of the most successful television shows ever," Jackson told Deadline in a statement. "A true original, 'Idol' started it all. Onto what’s next.” Jackson was one of the three original "Idol" judges alongside Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul. He first announced he was leaving last May, but decided to return as a mentor, working with contestants during "Rush Week" and later in the finals. His exit leaves host Ryan Seacrest as the series' only remaining original cast member. “Randy has been such an integral part of 'American Idol' since day one, both as a judge and as a mentor,...

A change (or two) is gonna come when Season 14 of American Idol returns next January — starting with the lineup of judges at the New York City auditions and possibly percolating down to the kind of contestants being sought and the amount of torture they’ll receive from the show’s producers.

In 2009 an urban legend turned out to be true and a college hazing turned out to be deadly in Hellweek, a horror film you've probably never seen. In 2013 the film was released. Now, in 2014, a special grindhouse edition is here. Read on for details.
From the Press Release
Sgl Entertainment has released a "Grindhouse" version of the cult classic horror film Hellweek. This faster paced, all new version, edited by Bobby Jones, includes some cool never-before-seen footage.
Eddie Lengyel’s Hellweek is the tale of “Hazing Gone Bad.” Rush week turns unexpectedly hellish when a band of sadistic, masked homicidal maniacs holed up in an abandoned warehouse wreak havoc on a bunch of not-so-innocent college kids.
Wanting to ensure the new pledges prove they’re worthy, fraternity president J.J. sends them to a deserted warehouse rumored to be inhabited by demonic squatters. But the hazing takes on a sadistic...

While "American Idol" Season 13 Rush Week was pretty brutal, the atmosphere during the show's Top 13 elimination show was still tense. Malaya Watson, Mk Nobilette and Kristen O'Connor were the first three singers sent to the bottom. Which one went home?
In the end, Kristen was sent packing. There is a save, which expires at Top 6 week, but clearly the judges weren't going to use it the very first week -- and they didn't. Here's how it went down:
The first group brought onstage to hear results was Malaya, Jena, Alex and Ben. While Ben, Alex and Jena were sent to safety, Malaya was sent to the first stool of doom. (That wasn't too shocking since her rendition of Bruno Mars' "Runaway Baby" was all over the place -- in a bad way.)
The second group included Mk, Sam, Majesty and Dexter. Ryan Seacrest sent Dexter, Majesty and Sam to safety,...

Hello all! Last season's recapper Bill King here, filling in for John this week, and it's great to be back! Now that the madness and questionable decisions of the ludicrous Rush Week are behind us, it's time to get back to good ol' fashioned Idol. Thirteen singers, everyone gets to perform, America decides and all the judges can do is hang on to the save in case we all do something catastrophically stupid.

One of those changes is the just-finished Rush Week, which featured a workshop with former judge Randy Jackson and the help of Idol alums Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry. Is the fat lady about to sing? Thursday night's broadcast of American Idol hit an all-time ratings low. The Fox musical competition slumped to a mere 2.4 out of 7—the lowest number in the series' history, and down 20 percent from last Thursday's semi-finalist reveal. This week, Idol debuted their first ever "Rush Week," an expedited elimination process that started off with 30 singing hopefuls and cut more than a third of their talented group in just three days. Despite revealing this season's top 13 finalists, only 9.2 million viewers tuned in to last night's hour-long broadcast. Throughout the week, many Idol fans claimed that with the new rush week formatting, the judges...

Fifteen men. Fifteen layered “rocker” outfits from H&M. Fifteen obligations to make preteen girls clap, whinny, and vote. Who will win? Who will whinny?
I did a couple of times. Not raucously, but overall, the first showcase of American Idol‘s male contestant crop was much better than the distaff half’s debut on Tuesday night. Some areas of improvement over the ladies: less screaming; more looking-like-they-belong-on-a-stage; handsomeness; guitar antics; palpable sensuality; faces for gay men to enjoy. Maybe we didn’t get a tender, tearful moment in the vein of M.K. Nobilette‘s whispery triumph on Tuesday, but I think we clearly saw five dudes fulla feelings emerge as frontrunners. Which is convenient, considering only five are guaranteed to proceed.

This season’s top 15 guys went head to head (voice to voice?) on the Feb. 19 episode of American Idol, and while there were quite a few stand-out performers, one contestant stood head and shoulders above the rest: Sarasota, Fla., resident Sam Woolf! Excuse me while I totally fan-girl over him.
Not only was Sam’s version of David Gray‘s “Babylon” a breezy romp of plucky perfection, but the charming brunette had the entire audience eating out of the palm of his hand. I hate to be ‘that guy,’ but Sam totally fits the mold of past winners like Phillip Phillips and David Cook – and by that, I mean he’s a handsome white guy with a guitar. American Idol returned on Wednesday with the all-male portion of Rush Week, where the top 10 guys performed before a live audience in the hopes of cracking into the final group of singers.
'American Idol' Recap
As with the girls, the 15 male semi-finalists waited nervously to see if their names were called by Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez or Harry Connick Jr. to hit the stage and sing for America’s votes. Idol alums Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry were back mentoring in the workshop, as was veteran judge Randy Jackson.
Caleb Johnson, the 70s Meat Loaf lookalike, was the first name called. Singing “Stay with Me” by The Faces. Johnson carried the song by the British rock band admirably, while working the stage like a pro. Perhaps his biggest fan at the judges table, Urban, said the performance was “killer.”
Next up, was the soulful Cj Harris. Harris took on Ray Lamontagne song “Shelter,...

We get it, Harry — you don’t like when young singers take on mature songs. But when Emily Piriz totally nailed Grace Potter and the Nocturnal’s ‘Ooh La La,’ it was so inappropriate to call her out and embarrass her.
When Emily Piriz, 18, took the stage for Rush Week on American Idol, she completely rocked her version of “Ooh La La,” which yes, is a very sexual song. While this wasn’t the first time judge Harry Connick Jr. disproved of a contestant singing this song, calling her out the way he did was rude and uncalled for.
Harry Connick Jr. Embarrassed Emily Piriz
To give you a little background, the singer took the stage and did freakin’ amazing, but apparently that didn’t matter to Harry who just asked her to read the words of the first two lines of the song.

I know I’ve spent about 75 percent of these recaps raving about how fast everything is moving, but I seriously can’t believe it. I’m so used to American Idol spinning its wheels, stretching everything (except the music) to ten times its normal length. But check this out: It is mid-February, and we are already at the live shows. We’ll have a top 13 by the end of this week. If I didn’t work in the television industry, I’d swear the producers actually started to have a little bit of respect for their audience. It’s Rush Week! Just like in college, except somehow crueler and therefore much more fun to watch! And here’s how it goes: We are down to our top 15 women, ten of whom will perform tonight, and then we will call in and choose the top five. In short, it is going to be a bloodbath.

It's Rush Week on American Idol, which means the season 13 contestants are performing live for the very first time. There were plenty of nerves to go around on Tuesday night when the girls took to the stage. Did anyone rise to the occasion? Who fell under pressure? And who's going home on Thursday?
Out of the 15 girls in the Top 31, only 10 were chosen by the judges to perform. The biggest shocker was Kenz Hall being cut. This doesn't make any sense to me because she's one of the best this year -- how do you get rid of someone like her so soon? Can the producers change the rules and give her another chance? At the very least, I hope she's able to audition again next year.

In what was dubbed Rush Week, the judges reviewed tapes of the Top 15 Girls and picked the 10 that impressed them the most to perform, surprising the ladies one at a time. The familiar faces? Randy Jackson, the "Dogfather" of Idol, was back to mentor the contestants, leading a sort of Rush Week "wisdom workshop" for the pledges, which included vocal coaching from former Idol contestants Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry,...

American Idol kicked off the live episodes on Tuesday night, where the judges selected 10 of the top 15 girls to sing for America’s votes in its first ever Rush Week.
The 15 girls that were selected at the end of Hollywood week received the mentorship of Randy Jackson, Adam Lambert, Chris Daughtry and Rickey Minor. They also received style makeovers and even some spiritual advising. Unfortunately, five of the polished singers would not get the chance to sing before the live audience. Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez and Harry Connick Jr. had narrowed down the field to the 10 who outshone the others during dress rehearsals and throughout the workshop process.
Majesty Rose was the first name call by the trio of judges. She came out with her guitar to sing Pharrell’s hit song “Happy.” Many of the performances that followed didn’t match up to Rose’s stage presence or the pure strength of her voice.

For the special occasion of American Idol‘s very first “Rush Week” and this season’s first live show, Keith Urban wore his finest t-shirt! Because two hours just isn’t enough time, the judges will choose just 10 out of 15 to perform, leaving the other five without even the opportunity to earn America’s vote! Harsh. See below for who got the chance to perform and to see how they fared, and to find out why Harry decided to shame 18-year-old Emily Piriz for her song choice!

It's time for Rush Week on "American Idol." No. I don't know what "Rush Week" means either. Apparently it will involve live performances and it will involve Randy Jackson and it will also feature the judges eliminating people even before they perform? I'm confident that whoever the judges send home early from the Top 15 Women, Briana Oakley is going to perform. So she's my picture here. Beyond that, click through and we'll experience this together. 7:59 p.m. Et. Let's party! 8:00 p.m. There are 13 Stools of Destiny on the "Idol" stage. I hope they're left there for the performances....

Randy Jackson is excited about his new role on "American Idol." The former judge is now Season 13's mentor, and the ringleader of the show's newest round: a bootcamp/workshop for the Top 30 contestants held a few weeks before the live shows began to assimilate them into the "Idol" schedule.
Zap2it spoke with Jackson during a day at the workshop, and he explained why he decided to return. "I feel like this is the next evolution of what I want to do," he says. "I did my time as a judge. I don't need to judge again ever. I love this because I can make this workshop and this mentoring role a bigger, broader thing and actually help the kids. Because as a judge, you get no interaction. ... Now, I get a chance to actually talk to them and help them and I can see the things that are wrong and suggest to them,...

When American Idol’s rush week begins Tuesday night, fans of the long-running singing competition will notice a couple of changes to the show. For one, what is Rush Week?
The new stage of the competition marks the beginning of the live shows for the 13th season, which welcomed back judges Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez, as well as introducing fan favorite Harry Connick Jr. to the panel. The live shows will also feature a brand-new set created to tap into the energy of live music, which executive producer Evan Prager says is the core of the show. The complete...

"American Idol" is finally getting to some live performances this week, with the Top 15 girls kicking things off Tuesday (Feb. 18) and the Top 15 boys performing Wednesday. But before they can take the (revamped) "Idol" stage, the Top 30 have to go through Randy Jackson's boot camp first.
Above, Jackson, as the new in-house mentor, addresses the contestants. Then below, former "Idol" stars Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry help out with staging, arrangements, style and just any general advice they have for the contestants.
If you'd like to know what a day at boot camp is like, check out Zap2it's on-the-scene account in this photo gallery and tune in Tuesday at 8 p.m. Et/Pt for the first night of "Rush Week" before we have our Top 13 finalists.

Randy Jackson returns to American Idol tonight in his new role as mentor, guiding the contestants through Rush Week. The 31 remaining hopefuls will cycle through Jackson's workshop, a series of classes focusing on vocal skills, styling and social-media training. Former finalists Adam Lambert and Chris Daughtry will also be around to field questions. Idol's top dawg breaks down the intensive two-day process.
TV Guide Magazine: Why did you want to come back for this workshop?
Jackson: Being a judge, you don't have that closeness with the kids. I know they have a trillion questions, so I really wanted to prepare them for the show and make it informative. You've got all these people at the top of their fields who want to help. This is for the rest of the [contestants'] lives, so they have to take advantage. It's like a college-prep course, and I'm the dean!

Being an "American Idol" contestant is incredibly nerve-wracking -- even when there are no stakes involved. For the show's 13th season, producers have added a new element into the final week of preliminary competition: a workshop/boot camp with judge-turned-mentor Randy Jackson.
To experience this new round firsthand, I spent a cloudy January day going through each station in the "Idol" bootcamp. I wasn't even a real contestant, but it was one of the most terrifying professional experiences I've ever had. (Putting things into perspective: I spent the day at a luxurious beachside Southern California resort on the set of one of my favorite television shows. This is clearly a first world problem.)
I knew I'd have to sing eventually. I was sort of prepared, in that I sang in high school choir and I am acquainted with the inside of a karaoke booth. But I wasn't actually ready to...

Season 13 of "American Idol" has been a fresh start of sorts for the stalwart reality competition. The audition episodes have gotten a welcomed overhaul, the judging panel is as close to perfect as it's been since the original iteration and now the live shows are going to look refreshed thanks to the show's brand-new set.
Zap2it visited Stage 36 at CBS Television City for the first time this "Idol" season to catch a quick glimpse at the new setup, and it has an entirely different vibe from previous years. As you can see in some quick iPhone pictures we snapped during our walk-through, there are now three levels of seating, two different stages, a lounge area for the non-performing contestants, and a showcase for the Rickey Minor-led band.

The auditions and Hollywood Week are now behind us. We know who has made it into the Top 30 (well, almost), and for those contestants who have made it this far, Rush Week is their most important moment yet. American Idol goes live for the first time this season, but there's a catch: not everyone will get the chance to sing for America's votes.

It's time to meet the pledges semi-finalists! On Thursday night, American Idol narrowed its hopefuls down to the Top 30 contestants, who will compete in the Fox hit's first ever "Rush Week" next Wednesday and Thursday. What is "Rush Week," you ask? The Top 15 guys will perform on Tuesday, while the Top 15 girls will take the stage on Wednesday. Then on Thursday's show, more than half of the competitors will be eliminated, leaving America with its Top 13 finalists. Cut-throat? Yep, but this is show business. So who did judges Harry Connick Jr., Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban decide to send through to "Rush Week"? The Top 30 semi-finalists...

“We listened to the viewers and they told us they’re fed up with the middle rounds after Hollywood Week and before the live shows, so we’ve shortened all of that down, condensed the middle round into one week – we’re calling it Rush Week,” American Idol exec producer Trish Kinane told TV critics at Winter TV Press Tour 2014. They’ve also added something called The Chamber, where Idolettes go after host Ryan Seacrest tells them that in a couple minutes they’ve got to “give it their all,” Kinane explained, where we’ll see them pray, sing, check their armpits for sweat — whatever. “It’s a very intimate moment,” she told critics. “We didn’t want to do anything radical,” Kinane said of the many changes in store for this year’s competition. “The original format really works,” she said. But “we went back and examined every single element of the show,...

With a new executive producer and a new judging panel, "American Idol" Season 13 is filled with changes. Now, Fox has revealed the additions to the show, including the new "Hollywood or Home" round and "Rush Week."
Here's an outline of the changes, per Fox:
Hollywood or Home
Those who prove they have what it takes to move forward in the competition think they are headed to the "Hollywood" round. Not so fast: Contestants will have to compete in a surprise "Hollywood or Home" round, which airs Wednesday, Feb. 5. The judges will decide which hopefuls really have what it takes to become the next singing superstar. Some of the singers will be asked to perform one more time for the judges -- and some won't make the cut. Those who don't make must head straight home -- ouch.
Hollywood Week
The traditional group and solo performances will take place on Thursday,...

Fifty years ago, the University of Alabama admitted its first black students, but not before putting up an infamous fight. As you might recall from your Us history class, Alabama Gov. George Wallace - who had promised "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever" - attempted to block the entry of two black students to the school on June 11, 1963, in what was known as the "Stand in the Schoolhouse Door." Thanks to intervention from President Kennedy, the students were eventually allowed in. Now, generations later, the school is back in the spotlight for the apparent segregation of its Greek system. Earlier this month, student newspaper The Crimson White reported that four sororities had stopped two otherwise-qualified black women from rushing. According to the paper, chapter alumnae were behind the discrimination. As this story gains national attention and highlights modern race realities, let's look at how it's unfolded so far. Aug. 9:...

['Greek' - 'Fools Rush In']
It's Rush Week at Cyprus Rhodes! And with the semester officially starting, everyone seems to be finding their new roles within the Greek system.
We left last week with Rusty bowing out of the running for KT president in favor of Cappie. This episode, Rusty was announced as the new rush chair (a step above his former gig as pledge educator), and he decided to take the role seriously and actually try this semester, something unheard of by the other KTs.
Meanwhile, pledge educator Tegan came to make sure new Zbz president Rebecca was abiding by the new rules and even Dale decided to rush a fraternity.
