Sex & Nudity
-
- John Goodman shows a topless cartoon woman on the back of his tie for a few seconds.
- It is implied that a couple has sex but there is nothing shown at all, and they are seen waking up the next morning.
- A comment about "the noise from the newlywed couple next door", or something along those lines, but just a side-comment, nothing that is emphasized.
- Mild sexual noises are heard from the room next door and a character has his ear glued to the wall to listen.
Violence & Gore
-
- A dead very bloody corpse with intense gore is shown in bed. The rib cage and intestines are visible for a long period of time.
- A man is shot in leg.
- A woman is struck and emotionally and physically abused.
- One character is found dead in bed, with a lot of blood seen on the sheets. This is a fairly long scene.
- Another character is shot in the chest with some blood, but this is brief.
- One offscreen killing where a serial killer puts a shotgun to a man's head and a shot is heard. Before this he has shot this man in the ankle to stop him from running away. Again, there is some blood, but it is very brief.
- A man is punched in the face, but it isn't in any way serious.
Profanity
-
- Most of the language is hard to hear
- Because it is set in the "fast-talking" business world of the 30's and 40's, mild language is used throughout, including the d-word, h-word, and variations of God's name. Three f-words used toward the end by some rude detectives. When a character is punched there is a brief exclaimation of "what the f-"
- Mainly mild language; there are 3 f-words that give this the R rating, but there is no sexual dialogue.
Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking
-
- Casual drinking and smoking, considering the time it represents. A character is seen to be violently abusive while incredibly drunk throughout several scenes. Drinking and Alcohol abuse is shown excessively throughout the film.
Frightening & Intense Scenes
-
- Despite being funny at times, there are also times where the movie can be quite disturbing.
- The movie's atmosphere is somewhat eerie.
- The story is dark and surreal, and toward the end some twists make it suspenseful and intense.
