A review of tonight's "True Detective" coming up just as soon as I'm louche... Of all the celebrated aspects of "True Detective" season 1, the only part to land the show any major Emmys was the celebrated single-take action sequence at the end of "Who Goes There." Short of trying to do a whole episode in what appears to be a single take (which "The X-Files" already did 17 years ago), the only way to top Rust's escape through the projects would be to expand the scope of the action. And that's exactly what we get in the climax of "Down Will Come" (like "Who Goes There," the fourth episode of the season), as a botched raid on the hideout of a man who pawned some of Caspere's jewelry led to a spectacular action set piece involving automatic weapons fire, chases on foot, car and bus, deaths of cops (including Teague Dixon,...

Q- You are the current Director of WGA's Showrunner Training Program at Writers Guild of America West. How many applicants did you have for this year?
A- We had over eighty applicants for about twenty five slots. The application process is a two step process. First applicants have to be recommended by current show runners or creative executives. Once they've been recommended, they fill out an application. I review the applications and we end up interviewing about fifty candidates. Out of those fifty candidates we invite approximately twenty five people to participate in the Program. This year's first session was on Saturday, January 14th and it (the program) ran for six consecutive Saturdays.
Q- How long has the Showrunner Training Program been in existence, and can you give the readers a background of its origins?

Fox Television has swung the axe over its line-up in a dramatic cull that includes two projects with comic book origins.
More superhero and comic properties than ever are seeing life as films and TV shows but in such a crowded and competitive marketplace, some fall flat and others never get off the ground.
Today, Inside TV reported that 20th Century Fox Television has scrapped its DC Comics-based series Human Target after just two seasons. This is its second failed attempt as a show, the first airing on ABC in 1992 and starring pop singer Rick Springfield as central character Christopher Chance. Declining ratings were the reason for terminating the latest incarnation as it's experienced a steady drop since premiering two years ago.
The more discouraging news is that Fox has passed on the planned autumn launch of Locke & Key, based on Joe Hill's comic (pictured) about...

Thq's "Red Faction" games have gone from surprise hit to all-out media assault in the last few years. Comics based on the IP are already out in the wild and the next piece of the multimedia puzzle will now premiere on SyFy on June 4th.
I've written previously about how the "Red Faction: Origins" TV movie will bridge the gap between "Red Faction: Guerilla" and the soon-to-be-released "Red Faction Underground." But, the cable network has only just announced the airdate for the new show. It's got a 9 P.M. Et/Pt timeslot and stars the liquid-metal Terminator himsle, Robert Patrick as an older Alec Mason.
And if you're looking for synchronicity, the two-hour movie comes out only days after the May 31st launch of the new game. Pertinent details from the press release follow:
Directed by Peabody-Award winner Michael Nankin (Caprica, Battlestar Galactica, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation), Red Faction: Origins...

The "Human Target" television series premieres this weekend with stars Mark Valley ("Fringe"), Jackie Earle Haley ("Watchmen") and Chi McBride ("Pushing Daisies"), and while the project is based on a DC Comics title of the same name, fans are likely to notice a few big differences between the TV series and its source material.
For example, main character Christopher Chance no longer assumes the identity of clients who are targeted for assassination, and instead creates a new identity that will put him close enough to protect them and reveal the killer. Valley explained why the change was necessary.
"To be honest with you, when I was reading the comics, I would get a little bit confused," he confessed. "It's a graphic novel and usually it's pretty explanatory, but I was getting a little confused [about] which one is Chance and which one is the real person."

Please keep in mind that the premiere dates stated here are subject to change. Make sure you check your local listings for those shows you're most excited about.
The CW: Watch
I'm not a big fan of soap opera television, whether it airs during the day or in primetime, but The Beautiful Life could force me to change my mind, and not just because it's about young models with lithe bodies. . . . Sorry, back now. No, Tbl is intriguing because it's executive produced by Ashton Kutcher, who has proven to be a savvy television producer and who was himself a model. It also co-stars Mischa Barton, whose train wreck of a personal life rivals anything the writers can come up with. Premiere: Wednesday, Sept. 16.
Smallville is only a hollow shell of what it used to be,...

Comic Book Human Target is to be turned into a series for Fox following a successful TV pilot, says The Hollywood Reporter.
It's based on the DC title about agent-for-hire Christopher Chance (Mark Valley) who uses hi-tech masks to assume the identity of people in danger and eliminate the threats against them.
Jackie Earle Healey - who was the masked vigilante Rorschach in Watchmen - will play Chance's information gatherer. He will be joined by Chi McBride, from comedy drama Pushing Daisies, who will play the hero's business partner and friend.
The project is written by Jon Steinberg and directed by Simon West, who produced the pilot with Terminator Salvation director McG.
An earlier TV pilot, starring soap actor and former pop star Rick Springfield, was produced in 1990. That pilot never aired but a short series of seven episodes was screened in 1992, with a different cast.
