It was right after a glorious six-week European tour, in the middle of talks with a new management team about a big release for her newly finished album On My Own, that singer-songwriter Lera Lynn first felt it. Something in her body was off. She was getting nauseous on the road — and, as this was someone used to long trips to gigs, it couldn’t be car sickness. She stopped to pick up a pregnancy test at her local Kroger in Nashville. The next morning she was staring at two bright red lines.

It's Reader Appreciation Month so I'm playing Santa with gifts.
I'm so sorry I didn't announce this sooner! I do get backed up here. I know those of you who entered the Les Miz contest are dying to just buy the new blu-ray/dvd combo pack if you didn't win. This contest had a great response. I asked interested Red & Black revolutionaries to answer three questions:
• Which kind of bread would you bake Valjean so he doesn't steal another loaf?
• Which movie hooker other than Fantine should've had a death bed song?
• Bring Him Home: Jackman, Redmayne, Tveit or Crowe?
I had much fun reading the often creative answers. But the three winners, chosen randomly, are...

Bread: Pain de campagne, which I hope Hugh will stick around to enjoy as pain perdu. Hooker: Mildred, from Of Human Bondage....Bette Davis croaking it out as she croaks.

When it was announced that Samantha Barks had beat out bold-faced names like Taylor Swift, Lea Michele and more to land the highly coveted role of Eponine in Universal's Les Miserables big screen musical, many people said, "Who?" Although those uneducated masses quickly learned that Barks was the beauty who brought the role to life, 8 times a week, in London's West End.
And now that everyone has seen her heart-breaking performance on the big screen, the question is no longer "Who?" but "When?" As in, "When can we see her again?" To find out more about the woman behind the big voice, ETonline caught up with Samantha Barks to reflect upon her Les Mis experience and find out which role, besides Eponine, she'd like to play next!
ETonline: You'd spent more than a year playing Eponine on stage -- but did playing her on film give you any new insight into the character?
Samantha Barks: Oh yes...

People who enjoy a good cry, today is your lucky day: The film version of Les Misérables is now out on Blu-ray and DVD. The epic musical has been running all over the world for over 26 years, and according to movie producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who also produced the original show, an idea to make a movie version has been kicking around for nearly as long, but only recently – despite an occasional exception — have movie musicals been seen as a commercially successful idea. “Musicals 25 years ago were very few and far between,” Mackintosh explained to EW. “I think in the...

It seems like The Client List Season 2 will be taking on a completely different look.
"Till I Make it On My Own" introduced us to a stronger Riley, along with new relationship between her and Selena, while also questioning Georgia's future with The Rub. Wait! There's more!
What a surprise! At the end of last season they sure made it seem like Riley was seconds away from being arrested, but it was Kyle they were after.
Kyle not only returned to his family, he did so after stealing a semi-truck full of copper wire. He wasn't thinking of what it would do to his kids to show up into their lives only to be sucked back out again, that's for sure. It was so sad to see their little faces wanting their daddy at their science fair, only to be disappointed yet again.
You know what else was surprising?...

The most recent episode of The CW’s The Carrie Diaries had many special moments, not the least of which were Carrie Bradshaw’s first encounter with both Manolo Blahniks and a Cosmopolitan. There were also break-ups, shake-ups and a lot of sequins! EW talked to Diaries’ executive producer Amy B. Harris about all the very fashionable drama.
Entertainment Weekly: So what will happen with Carrie and Interview? Her father forbade her from going to New York.
Amy B. Harris: Carrie is going to return to Manhattan and there’s going to be some surprising encounters that allow her to return to that universe.

Did you hear the people singing yesterday? To be fair, it was mostly the screams of excited Les Misérables fans when they heard the show was coming back to Broadway, set for a new opening in March 2014. Details right now are scarce – although we do know that the new production will be based on the current West End revival of the piece, which contains slightly different staging and other adjustments.
As for casting, it’s too early in the game for official announcements – which is where the fun comes in. Below, see some dream picks for all the big roles...

Smash, Season 2, Episode 3: “The Dramaturg”
Written by: Bryan Coluboff
Directed by: Larry Shaw
Airs Tuesdays at 10pm (Et) on NBC
Smash, you make it incredibly difficult to love you. You have a whole audience who turns in each week just to hate you, and you neglect your loyal liege who will sing and dance to every musical number. After last week’s dismal ratings and poor reviews, it’s trying not to want to jump off this sinking ship. Going into episode three, it’s only hopeful that the new promised changes would make a noticeable impact; regrettably the result may be a mess that’s worst than the first season.
This episode is aptly titled “The Dramaturg”, because Eileen feels it is necessary that Bombshell get a fresh perspective in the form of a professional dramaturg, Peter Gilman (played by newcomer Daniel Sunjata). This sends Julia in a...

New York -- Someone is dreaming the dream: "Les Miserables" is coming back to Broadway.
Producer Cameron Mackintosh said Tuesday that the national tour of the epic musical about life in 19th-century France will make a stop on Broadway in March 2014 at a Shubert theater.
The move comes on the heels of the Oscar-nominated big screen adaptation directed by Tom Hooper and starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe and Anne Hathaway.
It will mark the third time the show has made it to Broadway. The original landed in 1987 and played 6,680 performances, ranking as the third-longest-running musical in Broadway history. A revival was mounted in 2006 but closed in 2008.
Mackintosh, who has also been involved in producing "The Phantom of the Opera," "Mary Poppins," "Miss Saigon" and "Cats," is betting that the appetite for "Les Miserables" will only be increased by the movie. History has shown he might be right: Film version of...

Back in November, I wondered aloud if it was mere conicidence that Anne Hathaway hosted the Oscars in 2011 and sang a version of "On My Own" to Hugh Jackman while future "Les Misérables" director Tom Hooper was in the audience (he won that year for "The King's Speech.") At a recent Q&A with Jackman, Hooper, and Eddie Redmyane following a screening of "Les Misérables," I had the opportunity to ask Hooper this very question. His response: "I’m sitting at the Oscars, pretty sure that I’m going to direct 'Les Miz' but not sure at all who I’m going to cast. And Anne Hathaway steps forth, to the front of the stage and sings a rendition of 'On My Own' to Hugh Jackman. And I’m going: Hold on a second, is Anne Hathaway using the Oscar stage as the ultimate auditioning platform...

Who knew the South Korean Air Force had a flair for theatrics? A group of soldiers have created a parody of "Les Miserables," centering on a…err…slightly altered story line of the popular musical/Oscar-nominated film. Jean Valjean, a soldier on a South Korean airbase, is condemned to shovel snow when all he really wants to do is hang with his girlfriend, Cosette. Yes, we know, Cosette is practically Jean Valjean’s daughter in the real thing…but let’s look past that minor flaw.
The video beings with "Dig Down," sung by the soldiers of the 22nd Fighter Wing as they shovel away their souls. This is a scene that anyone can empathize with who has been forced to spend a snow day digging out the driveway while the neighbor kids go sledding. The parody also features variations on "I Dreamed a Dream," "On My Own," and "Red...

There are few things better than someone embarrassing themselves on the street, while someone else films the perplexed faces of people passing by. But here's one: A good performance—nay, the best street performance we've seen—courtesy of Cher Lloyd. Plus, we still get perplexed passersby. Probably perplexed because there's an awesome singer singing an awesome song on the street corner of New York (the song, by the way, is Robyn's "Dancing On My Own"). The video is on the older side, but the songstress (who finished fourth on the UK X Factor) just got a ringing endorsement from Girls creator Lena Dunham, who tweeted, "So oddly and deeply melancholic...

Can you hear the people sing? If you're watching the 85th annual Academy Awards on Feb. 24, then perhaps you can. According to Baz Bamigboye of The Daily Mail, "Les Miserables" cast members Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne, Amanda Seyfried and Samantha Barks are expected to perform songs from "Les Mis" at the Oscars.
Per Bamigboye, the group will either sing group numbers like "Can You Hear The People Sing?" or "One Day More" or participate in a medley of "Les Miserables" tracks, like "I Dreamed a Dream" and "On My Own."
Jackman and Hathaway are nominated for Oscars in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories, respectively; Jackman will likely perform the Oscar-nominated song "Suddenly," which he sings in the Tom Hooper film. As yet, none of this has been confirmed by the Academy Awards.
As Vulture deftly notes, Russell Crowe's name is not mentioned as participating in the possible Oscar number.

Les Miserables
Stars: Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway, Isabelle Allen, Amanda Seyfried, Samantha Barks, Eddie Redmayne, Colm Wilkinson | Written by Victor Hugo, William Nicholson | Directed by Tom Hooper
Victor Hugo’s epic novel Les Miserables is no stranger to big screen adaptations, with close to fifty different versions in various languages, but Tom Hooper’s version, (Oscar winning director of The King’s Speech) the first to adapt the stage musical, is possibly the grandest and most ambitious to date. The tale of Jean Valjean provides the plot for the longest running musical in the West End, and it took 27 years for someone to bring give it the cinematic treatment it so clearly deserves.
The story begins as Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) is released on parole after 19 years in prison for stealing a loaf of bread, and trying to escape. However he breaks parole, in attempt to make a better life for himself,...

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
Oscar nominations are right around the corner (January 10), so I thought I’d use the opportunity to highlight some people I really hope get nominated. It would be easy to make this an overall list of things I want to happen – basically Les Misérables and Django Unchained for everything (it was a very merry Christmas, indeed) – but I wanted to narrow it down a bit more. While there are a lot of Oscar veterans in the running for nominations, I’ll be focusing on some folks who are vying for their first.
Now, to keep it somewhat manageable I’ll only be including people who have some modicum of hope, however slim at this late stage. Take Quvenzhané Wallis from Beasts of the Southern Wild. She still has a real shot, so she might be on here (spoiler alert: she is not...

With the new year comes some new beginnings, and that's exactly what we're hoping for. Can you blame us? After all, we are the ones who rearrange our nightly schedules just to see if so and so hookups this week, or if a certain pair of lawyers will look as dapper as always.

Robyn Carlsson is a bit of a musical anomaly – emerging from the frankly amazing pop and music scene in the Scandinavian countries, Robyn has always straddled the fine line between mainstream and the little-known. She’s a driving major pop force with fans across the globe. This, therefore, is my attempt to relay my opinion that her seventh studio album and pet project ‘Body Talk’ is one of the strongest and most cohesive pieces of pop music – hell, music in general – and deserves to be recognised as such.
Robyn has often been considered one of the best popstars in the world – from humble beginnings as a recording artist for Swedish cartoons, she has risen to become the greatest secret popstar of the modern era. She’s simultaneously a massive success and not known very well in the mainstream music scene, despite her aptitude for penning and creating addictive and iconic pop songs.

The world has gone insane over "Les Miserables." The movie -- starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway, Russell Crowe and Amanda Seyfried -- has been raking in profits And accolades. "Les Mis" received four Golden Globes nominations and is even being touted as an early favorite for Oscar's most-coveted Motion Picture of the Year prize. And while the performances in Tom Hooper's film are nothing-less than stellar, the actors are hardly the first to take on the musical's iconic songs. Everyone from Katie Holmes to Neil Patrick Harris have thrown their lungs into the Claude-Michel Schonberg score.Check out the musical match-ups below and vote who sang it better!1. "I Dreamed a Dream" -- Anne Hathaway vs. Lea Michele and Idina Menzel ("Glee") vs. Susan Boyle ("Britain's Got Talent") 2. "On My Own" -- Samantha Barks vs. Katie Holmes ("Dawson's Creek") Click the link below for two more "Les Mis" singing showdowns.

Samantha Barks isn't afraid of much — her Les Misérables costar Eddie Redmayne says she's "one of the most fearless human beings alive" — but when I met up with her last month at a spacious room in Hollywood's storied Chateau Marmont, she was having a goosebumps moment. "It's spooky!" she said of the daunting hotel. I piled on, telling her about the celebrities who've died there, and the rumors of hauntings. "Oh gosh, oh wow. My God, stop," she said, giggling. It was her first time at the celeb-packed Chateau, but it surely won't be her last: Barks has the star-making role of Eponine in Tom Hooper's film version of Les Miz, and she gets to belt out "On My Own," a musical theater ballad so powerful that only "I Dreamed a Dream," from the same show, can trump it. She sat down with me to discuss her auspicious...

This year saw a handful of actors and actresses rapidly climb the ladder to stardom, or breakout onto the scene with massive potential. Here I've named the 10 who I believe have made the most of 2012. There have been lots of fantastic movie performances delivered by newcomers this year. Samantha Barks' show-stopping rendition of 'On My Own' in Les Miserables, Dane DeHaan's teenage supervillain in Chronicle and Life of Pi's Suraj Sharma would are specifically noteworthy. Add in expectantly solid turns from the current batch of A-listers including Daniel Day-Lewis' Lincoln, Hugh Jackman in Les Miserables, Denzel Washington in Flight and Liam Neeson in The Grey and this year is chock full must-see movies. But star power is a different thing entirely. It takes a combination of well received...

With just days until the release of "Les Miserables," a new trailer has been released for the film. The latest preview highlights newcomer Samantha Barks as she sings the classic, "On My Own" -- take a look in the video above.
Prior to appearing in the upcoming "Les Miserables," Barks played Eponine in the West End production of the iconic musical, and placed third in BBC's talent competition, "I'd Do Anything" at age 17.
"I think because it is a huge big change in my lifestyle, the way I kind of get through that is by trying to not freak myself out," Barks told HuffPost Entertainment earlier this month about her newfound fame. "Trying to not over-think too far and take every day that comes with gusto. The fact that there is a buzz around the film makes me burst with pride. I am honored to be involved in a project like this.

You want to know how popular "Les Miserables" is? Not only is it the biggest advance ticket seller this Christmas, it has broken the previous record held by "Sherlock Holmes." So yes, a lot of people will be going to see the epic musical next week, but in case you need an extra nudge to get off the couch and go, another trailer has arrived. This latest spot shines the light on newcomer Samantha Barks, who reprises her role of Eponine which she played to acclaim on stages in the U.K. Here, we get to listen to her sing "On My Own," as an array of new and old footage show off the size and scope of the film, which is certainly among one of the biggest productions hitting screens this holiday. We have our biggest and best clip yet from Tom Hooper's feature film adaptation of the Les Misérables musical. The clip features the big "One Day More" ensemble musical sequence. This is one of my favorite songs from the musical, and it may not be as good as what the Broadway cast is doing or has done, but they mange to pull it off quite well.
The clip includes Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit, Samantha Barks, Helena Bonham Carter and Sacha Baron Cohen. You can tell that Barks is the most talented singer in the film, but Redmayne is surprisingly really good as well.
The film comes out on December 25th, and it's been getting great reviews. I can't wait to see it!

Les Miserables is one of the most referenced musicals ever. Sure, it’s got some competition from Phantom of the Opera and Cats, but in general, no other musical has permeated pop culture the way Les Miz has. From Susan Boyle to South Park to, yeah, even Homeland, the references are all over the place, and we compiled a list of the 10 biggest ones we could think of. You might have forgotten about some of these, but we’re here to refresh your memory and get you as psyched as George Costanza to see this movie when it comes out Christmas day.
1. The guys at South Park love them some Les Miz. They named an episode from season four “Prisoner 24601,” but their biggest homage to the show was the anthemic “La Resistance” song from the Bigger, Longer, And Uncut film. An obvious nod to “One Day More,” it’s rousing,...

Before Samantha Barks was cast as Eponine in Tom Hooper's film adaptation of "Les Miserables," she was reportedly competing with Lea Michele, Scarlett Johansson and Taylor Swift for the role. Not that the 22-year-old actress, who makes her screen debut in "Les Miserables," was at a disadvantage against those A-listers: Barks starred as Eponine for a year in a West End production of "Les Miserables" and also played the character in the 25th anniversary production acclaimed musical. That show was produced by Cameron Mackintosh, one of the people who eventually hired her to play the lovestruck-but-duplicitous second-act scene-stealer in Hooper's new film.
Barks, who is among the possible contenders for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards, spoke to HuffPost Entertainment about belting out Eponine's signature song, "On My Own," why she was sweating so much after meeting Hugh Jackman, and how starring in "Les Mis" was the best experience of her life.

Eponine and Marius are not quite star-crossed lovers. They’re the couple that never was. The couple that, had Victor Hugo focus-tested the plot of Les Mis, would have probably won out over the pairing of Marius and Cosette. Scenes would have been rewritten to fulfill that overwhelming reader desire for Eponine to win his heart in the end.
But Hugo and Les Misérables don’t care about giving audiences something nice and pleasant, and frankly, having a crush that doesn’t like you back is the very least of anyone’s problems in 19th century France.

Why She's On Our Radar: There's no big screen newcomer more buzzed about this holiday season than Samantha Barks, the 22-year-old UK newcomer who beat out Taylor Swift to nab the part of Eponine in Tom Hooper's big-screen adaptation of the hit musical "Les Miserables" starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Anne Hathaway and Amanda Seyfried. Although this marks Barks film debut, she's no singing/acting novice having played Eponine on London's West End from 2010 to 2011, and Nancy in the UK touring production of "Oliver!." In Britain, she's best known for placing third on the televised singing competition "I'd Do Anything." It just takes a watch of Barks singing "On My Own" during the 25th anniversary performance of "Les Miserables" below, to see why she won the part. The hype for the film's been mounting for well over a year now. How does it feel to finally share it with.

"Girls" fans, rejoice! It was just announced that Lena Dunham's HBO show will be getting a soundtrack.

Verisimilitude can be a terrible trap. Film is an inherently contrived medium, one nevertheless capable of insinuating itself into realms real, imaginary and psychic through cunning, trickery, and time-honored craft. But, for better and (usually) worse, the existence of the medium’s hidden powers doesn’t stop some contemporary filmmakers from tweaking established conventions in the hope of creating a more “realistic” experience.
Take Britain’s Tom Hooper, for instance. Given any chance, he’ll extol the virtues of his new filmic adaptation of the musical version of Victor Hugo’s Les Misérables. He’ll doubtlessly mention that it features live, in-camera vocal performances, forgoing the standard film-musical practice of utilizing studio-honed vocal performances that are then synced to the actors’ filmed performances. (Or, heaven forbid, hiring professional singers to handle that aspect.) His directorial style, which makes use...

Tom Hooper takes impressive control of a grand canvas in this remorselessly epic cod-opera adaptation, in which Russell Crowe's low-key bleating almost comes as a relief
It's two years since Oscar bowed down before Tom Hooper to crown The King's Speech best picture. Now Hooper bobs obligingly back, offering the Academy not just what it wants to see but a mirror of sorts; a movie that takes its cues from the greatest Oscar night hits, recalling that glorious night last year when Hooper was honoured four times and host Anne Hathaway belted out On My Own to Hugh Jackman. It also bids to anticipate the highlights of the next one.
For the few uninitiated (the stage show has been seen by 60 million people), Les Misérables is Cameron Mackintosh's adaptation of Claude-Michel Schönberg and Alain Boublil's musical based on the Victor Hugo saga set in early 19th century France.

Les Miserables is the longest running musical in West End history and was the recipient of eight Tony Awards in 1987. Tom Hooper was the darling of the 2011 Academy Awards with his debut feature The King’s Speech garnering four Oscar statuettes. So, on paper Les Miserables should be a no brainer.

Adapted from the stage musical, which itself was adapted from Victor Hugo's 1862 French novel, Les Miserables is instantly massive as prisoners heave on giant ropes, pulling a massive ship into the port at Toulon. They sing in tune with each pull, "Look down, look down... Don't look them in the eye." It's here we meet Jean Valjean (Hugh Jackman) for the first time, head shaven and scarred. His sentence of nineteen years for stealing a single loaf of bread has come to an end, but a strict parole has been put in place, limiting his freedom under the watchful eye of the dedicated inspector of police Javert (Russell Crowe). These opening moments take place in the year 1815 and the film will cover the next 33 years as the people rise up to claim their country, an ex-con will become an adoptive father and a young girl will fall in love.

Universal Pictures has released five great new clips for Tom Hooper's Les Miserables featuring over six minutes of footage and musical numbers from the film! The songs included here are "A Heart Full of Love", "At the End of the Day", "Who Am I", "Javert Releases Prisoner 24601 On Parole" and "On my Own". Most of the music is really well done, and everyone seems to do a solid job, but I'm still not sure if I buy into Russell Crowe's singing abilities. It's a little awkward. My favorite clip is Samantha Barks as Éponine singing "On My Own", she's really freakin' good. Of course she played the part on Broadway, and it shows. She's a much better singer than everyone else.

Anne Hathaway gives one of the best musical performances I have seen on film with her rendition of "I Dreamed a Dream" in Les Miserables. I say this as someone not entirely versed in musicals, but also as someone that easily recognized the power behind her performance and the emotion that exudes from it. However, Universal is rightly keeping that clip under lock and key so it can be experienced by audiences in theaters, but they are giving you a taste of the second best musical performance in the film, that being Samantha Barks. Barks plays ?ponine, a role she first played on the London stage production of Les Miserables for a year spanning June 2010 to June 2011 and her performance singing "On My Own" was likely a showstopper on stage just as much as it is in the filmed adaptation and you can get a taste of it below. Much has been made of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway’s performances in the big-screen adaption of the musical “Les Misérables,” but this isn’t the first time the two have sang together before. It’s not even the first time Jackman has carried Hathaway in his arms. When Jackman hosted the 2009 Academy Awards, he pulled an “unsuspecting” Hathaway out of the audience to participate in his opening number. In a medley of songs about the nominated films, the two paid tribute to “Frost/Nixon” with Jackman as the interviewer Frost and Hathaway playing Nixon, even though, as she sang, “Frank Langella was sitting right next to me.” Two years later, when it was Hathaway’s turn to host, she even gave audiences a preview of another show-stopping tune from “Les Mis,” belting out a rendition of “On My Own” directed at Jackman—the joke being that Hathaway was hoping...
