"Jill lost her husband during a violent crime. She receives a letter addressed “to the despaired” which resurrects him from the dead. Wayne tells Jill that in order for him to stay with her, Jill needs to find three souls that he can consume before the full moon. Jill makes a vow to only find people that “deserve” such a horrible demise, but her promise is at stake when otherworldly entities unwillingly assist her quest; all while she unfolds the mystery of who her husband truly was before his untimely death."

The film is adapted by Grevioux from a graphic novel published by his Darkstorm Comics & Media company, about a biracial Black Japanese woman. “Love, exciting and new. . . Love, life’s sweetest reward. . .” From 1977 to 1987, “The Love Boat” offered a new adventure each week, with couples finding romance aboard the cruise ship. The decade-long success of this series indicates the thirst audiences have for love stories. It was during this time that “will-they-or-won’t they” couples became a popular concept, leading to some of the most popular onscreen pairings of all time. In honor of Valentine’s Day, we look back at some of the couples who have heated up our screens over the last few decades.

As comedian Will Ferrell walked across the magnificent stage of The Kennedy Center to accept the greatest honor an America funny person can receive, The Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, something happened that made us all remember why he is getting this prestigious honor. The award instantly slipped from Will’s hilarious fingers, shattering this legendary humorist’s bust all over the floor. An obvious gag, that was so damn fitting to what Will represents in the history of the art of doing silly stuff. Without breaking character for a second, Will hilariously tries to pick up the pieces as the world just sat back and laughed… but not laughing at him, we were laughing with him. The appeal of Will Ferrell comes from his innocent “I don’t give a f*ck” attitude that elevates simple stupid jokes to performance art. As Mr. Ferrell once said, “What I...

"Starsky & Hutch" actor David Soul passed away this week at the age of 80, leaving behind a legacy of memorable film and TV roles as well as a successful career as a soft rock musician. Soul's run on the stylish '70s detective series ended in 1979, but the performer continued working well into his golden years, most recently appearing in the 2013 film "Filth."

In a cinematic landscape filled with talent, certain performances stand out. From the quiet intensity of Greta Lee in Past Lives to the commanding presence of Taraji P. Henson in The Color Purple, this collection of actors make up some of my favorite performances of the year of films I saw. Each actor brings a unique energy and emotional depth to their roles to not only define their characters but elevate them.
These are not in any particular order.
Greta Lee & Teo Yoo, Past Lives
Lee beautifully navigates the delicate emotional journey put forth in Celine Song’s script. She embodies Nora’s quiet longing with a subtlety, her expressive eyes and gentle smile hinting at the depths of unsaid feelings. When faced with the ghosts of the yesterday, Lee unleashes a rawness that both devastates and resonates, reminding us of the vulnerability it takes to confront the paths not taken.

Many actors have several key roles in their careers, but Erika Alexander is one of the rare ones who’s had the role of a lifetime. Thirty years ago, she stepped into the character of Maxine Shaw on Living Single — a now-iconic attorney character inspired by her role models Cicely Tyson, Phylicia Rashad, Whoopi Goldberg and Hillary Clinton. In the years since, she’s been part of significant projects like Get Out and Wu-Tang: An American Saga. But American Fiction, she says, is the crown jewel of her portfolio.
“It’s been very healing to be in this movie,” says Alexander, 54. She plays Coraline, a divorcée who begins a relationship with Jeffrey Wright’s Monk, a novelist so frustrated with the publishing industry’s penchant for stereotypically “Black” books, he submits an absurdist manuscript to prove a point. “We’ve been having conversations like those in the movie for a long time,...

Erika Alexander got her start as a teen on “The Cosby Show” before assuming the breakout role of attorney Maxine Shaw on “Living Single.” But it’s her latest performance in “American Fiction,” a satire that critiques our culture’s obsession with stereotypes, that’s put her in a conversation she’s never been in before — that of awards season contender.
Alexander plays Coraline, the love interest of Jeffrey Wright’s Thelonious “Monk” Ellison, a cantankerous author who challenges the industry’s perceptions of “Black entertainment.” On Dec. 5, just hours before sitting down with Variety, Alexander learned she’d been nominated in the supporting category at the Independent Spirit Awards; she attended last year’s ceremony as a guest.
“I got dropped off on the highway and walked, scooting around the Porta-Potties,” she says, laughing brightly to keep her emotions about the moment at bay. They seep in anyway.

“American Fiction” cast members Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross and Erika Alexander opened up to TheWrap about their past experiences with racism in Hollywood, from being racially typecast to colorism and racial microagressions on set.
It’s pretty clear Hollywood still has a ways to go to tackle systemic racism — from “Oscars So White,” institutionalized racism that’s led to disparities in hiring and pay discrepancies between white people and people of color, to the recent exodus of Hollywood Dei executives.
While Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction” stands as a comedy that highlights a struggling novelist and his family’s standard imperfections, beneath that plot, the film spotlights the limits that have historically been placed on Black stories. It also explores how Black creatives are fighting to provide a wide variety of Black narratives to the world.

Exclusive: The combined Hulu and Disney+ app for bundle subscribers will launch in March with a big new attraction — the Grey’s Anatomy library, which will be offered on a Disney streaming platform for the first time.
Hulu and Netflix, the longtime SVOD home of the venerable series, will share the co-exclusive domestic streaming rights to all prior 19 seasons of Grey’s Anatomy, which is headed into Season 20 on ABC, extending its record as the longest-running primetime medical drama. The series will be available on both the bundled Disney app and the standalone Hulu service.
Securing Grey’s Anatomy for the foreseeable future is part of a short-term domestic content agreement between Disney Entertainment and Netflix — now being finalized — in which Disney is licensing 14 popular library TV series to Netflix on a non-exclusive basis for 18 months. The list includes Lost, This Is Us, Prison Break, Archer, How I Met Your Mother, White Collar,...

With the SAG-AFTRA strike officially in the rearview mirror, the Screen Actors Guild Awards are set to take take place on February 24, 2024. Last year, all four acting winners went on to prevail at the Academy Awards and the Best Film Ensemble champ, “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” won Best Picture. Our current odds at Gold Derby have casts from “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Poor Things” and “The Color Purple” predicted to fill out this year’s ensemble lineup, but I’m here to make a case for another likely nominee you may not see coming: Cord Jefferson‘s “American Fiction.”

Friends was and is a blessing to so many people around the world. And so was Matthew Perry.
The alchemy of brilliant writing, a stellar cast, voice-of-a-generation twentysomethings, and hilarity and emotionality in abundance, made it a wonderful series in 1994 — and unbeknown to all of us, were the ingredients to continue to impact generations almost 30 years after that. As the head of comedy development at Warner Bros. Television at that time, it’s definitely a shining star in my career.
Casting the six Friends, along with creators Marta Kauffman, David Crane and Kevin Bright, was challenging. They all had to be “stars.” The chemistry had to be believable. You just had to love them. And no one was more elusive than Chandler.
We had happily cast David Schwimmer (Ross), Lisa Kudrow (Phoebe), Courteney Cox (Monica) and Matt LeBlanc (Joey), and we had two roles to go just days before we started production on the pilot.

With “American Fiction,” Cord Jefferson, best known for penning television episodes of “Succession” and “Watchmen,” helms one of the finest directorial debuts seen since Sam Mendes’ “American Beauty.” In the style that feels like an audacious blend of the screenplays of Alexander Payne’s “Sideways” and Nicole Holofcener’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me,” he shepherds an audacious dramedy anchored by a career-best and Oscar-worthy performance from star Jeffrey Wright. After debuting at the Toronto International Film Festival, it’s a movie that could be a contender for the coveted TIFF Audience Award, and it would be deserved.
Based on the novel “Erasure” by Percival Everett, the film follows author Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright), a frustrated novelist who is fed up with the establishment profiting from “Black” entertainment that relies on tired and offensive tropes. To prove his point, Monk writes an outlandish “Black” book that propels him to the heart of hypocrisy and madness.

Check virtually any list of the most popular television sitcoms of all time, and Friends is likely somewhere near the top. The long-running show provided a glimpse at an idealized version of New York life that has fans still re-watching on repeat nearly three decades later.
While many members of the Friends cast really did become real-life friends from their long work together, things weren’t always rosy on the set — especially in later seasons.
‘Friends’ ran for 10 seasons from 1994 to 2004
One thing that makes Friends stand out is its longevity. The ’90s were a popular time for sitcoms. Set aside the likes of Will & Grace, Living Single, Roseanne, and The Nanny, Friends was certainly not alone in capturing the attention of a nation.
Despite this, Friends has set itself apart for its long-lasting appeal. Even Seinfeld — one of the most popular sitcoms of all time — has been unable...

Queen Latifah gives hip-hop "a whole lot of credit" for where her legacy stands. Looking back on her emergence in the 1980s - when she introduced her vibrant Afrocentric style and women empowerment anthems to the world - the rap icon tells Popsugar she's grateful the then-budding culture embraced her authenticity. It was "a really cool time in hip-hop," Latifah says, when she and her peers "were able to make music about anything we wanted" and when "being unique and different was actually celebrated."
"We went for it as much as so-called hippies did in the '60s," Latifah recalls of her peer group's trailblazing efforts in hip-hop. "By doing that, it gave us the courageousness to try things, get out there, try to sell it, and go for it." And go for it she did.
"I'm just happy that I had that kind of mom who loved hip-hop."

TV can give viewers false expectations of adult friendship. How many people who watched “Friends” or “Living Single” or “New Girl” got into shenanigans nearly as often as the characters? But Phil Augusta Jackson, creator of NBC’s “Grand Crew,” he swears it’s based on his own friend group and the wine bar where they hung out… with a few liberties taken.

“Severance,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once” and “Women Talking” took home top prizes at the Writers Guild of America Awards, Hollywood’s final major awards ceremony before next week’s 95th Oscars.
But the bigger message that emerged from the night was how the industry’s scribe tribe is engaged and ready to back their guild in the upcoming contract talks for a new master film and TV contract.
“Welcome to the Writers Guild Awards and strike authorization vote,” said host Janelle James, star of “Abbott Elementary,” at the start of the Los Angeles ceremony, held at the Fairmont Century Plaza hotel. Comedian Michelle Buteau led the New York festivities, which ran concurrently at New York’s Edison Ballroom.
Buteau kicked off New York’s night with a joke that broke the ice regarding the WGA’s looming contract negotiations: “I hope everyone enjoyed the cocktail hour. That was the studios’ counteroffer to streaming residuals.

“If that’s a joke, I love it. If not, can’t wait to unpack that with you later,” said Ted Lasso, perhaps accidentally highlighting two varying differences of comedy – the darker dramedy side and the laugh out loud variety.
Channing Dungey, Chairman and CEO, Warner Bros. Television Group, which makes the Jason Sudekis series, as well as breakout comedy hits Night Court and Abbott Elementary, says we’re in a moment where “hard funny” is making a comeback.

Leakes went on to say that “there’s a difference between being famous and being known,” and even though she labled Kandi Burruss the “star” title, her words have since sparked a conversation about which housewives truly can be considered famous.

For so long it seems like TV shows have starved Black women and women of color of sisterhood representation, but Prime Video's "Harlem" is changing that. The hit comedy series, created by Tracy Oliver, first premiered on Dec. 3, 2021, and returned for its highly anticipated second season on Feb. 3, 2023. The premise of the show revolves around the lives of four women in Harlem - Camille (Meagan Good), Quinn (Grace Byers), Angie (Shoniqua Shandai), and Tye (Jerrie Johnson) - as they juggle their tumultuous love lives, friendship, and careers.
The bond that the foursome share onscreen closely resembles other sister circles we've grown attached to, from shows like "Girlfriends," "Insecure," and "Living Single," to name a few. But Byers still wants viewers to know "Harlem" brings something else to the table by exploring familiar stories through new characters, some of which are rarely represented on the small screen.

“UnPrisoned” actor Delroy Lindo and showrunner Yvette Lee Bowser have found that opportunities for Black creatives have increased since their early years in the television and film business, saying that their new Hulu series serves as a “present-day corrective” in tackling systemic issues.
“We’re absolutely making progress,” Bowser – who has produced several hit shows, including “Living Single,” “A Different World” and “Dear White People” – said during a panel discussion for Hulu and Onyx Collective’s new dramedy on the 2023 Water TCA Press Tour.
The scripted series, which stars Lindo, Kerry Washington, Marque Richardson, Faly Rakotohavana and Jordyn McIntosh, is created by Tracy McMillan and inspired by her life. The half-hour comedy follows the life of a messy but perfectionist relationship therapist and single mom whose life is turned right-side-up when her dad gets out of prison and moves in with her and her teenage son.

Yvette Lee Bowser points to Unprisoned — Onyx’s first scripted comedy that stars Kerry Washington and Delroy Lindo — as a key example of how far TV has come when it comes to telling contemporary Black stories.

Harper Stewart, the ambitious, obstinate protagonist of Malcolm D. Lee’s The Best Man franchise, has always had questionable decision-making skills and terrible timing.
In the eponymous 1999 film, the young writer, played by Taye Diggs, avoids telling his best friend Lance (Morris Chestnut) that he slept with his fiancée (Monica Calhoun) in college until days before the couple’s wedding (in which Harper is the best man). The news threatens both the nuptials and the stability of the friend group, forcing Harper to work some eleventh-hour magic. In The Best Man Holiday (2013), more after-school special than its predecessor, Harper surreptitiously tries to convince a still angry Lance to hire him as a biographer while struggling to support his pregnant wife, Robyn (Sanaa Lathan).

The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards took place last night, in a show that was a vast improvement from last year's chaotic hybrid of in-person and virtual celebration. The awarded stars were all together for the ceremony for the first time since Covid-19 reared their ugly head, with folks like (seemingly only) Bill Hader wisely accessorizing his tuxedo with a K95 mask. We love and support an immunocompromised king.
Kenan Thompson hosted the festivities, delivering a reliable, and unproblematic performance, a far cry from the usual forced clowning of other award show hosts. His opening monologue was pretty standard fare, joking about how we'd all rather watch TV than read, followed by an extravagant musical salute (with some killer choreography) to some of the most beloved shows in TV history, while simultaneously delivering some well deserved roasts, like how "Friends" is a whitewashed version of "Living Single."

After a “for your consideration” season that somehow seems to have lasted longer than the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (too soon!), the 2022 Emmys are finally here.
Nominees, Hollywood power brokers and frightened publicists once again gathered inside Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater, a first since 2019, but we commoners vowed to watch all the action and inevitable Don’t Worry Darling jokes unfold on the medium du jour — using the cable subscriptions we absolutely pay for ourselves and not the log-ins we’ve stolen from our parents.
The last time the TV industry set aside an evening to congratulate itself, Ted Lasso, The Crown and The Queen’s Gambit were the big winners. But a lot has changed in a year. Quinta Brunson gifted ABC with Abbott Elementary, the first broadcast series to stand a fighting chance at major recognition in almost a decade. The Crown entered its royal hiatus,...

Actor Kenan Thompson got the crowd laughing about the history of primetime TV while hosting the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards on Monday evening. “It is I, the mayor of television, Kenan Thompson!” he said, opening the show.
“TV is more than just how we make a living. It’s also how our agents make a living!”
“Tonight we come together to honour the greatest invention in the history of mankind,” he continued.
“If it weren’t for TV, what would we do in our free time? Read books? No one in this room has read a book in the last 50 years. Watch TikTok? You mean tiny, vertical TV? Have sex? Gross! TV is all we have, from ‘Netflix and chill’ to ‘Paramount+ and eating dinner alone’.”
“And what sound fills us with more joy and anticipation than the familiar opening refrain of legally cleared TV theme? We’ve always been...

Kenan Thompson poked fun at a number of timely topics, from Netflix’s stock issues to Hollywood diversity to the controversial 2022 Oscars telecast, during his monologue as host of the 2022 Primetime Emmys on Monday.
He joked that he’s from Saturday Night Live, but some viewers might know him from his self-titled NBC sitcom before joking: “Just not enough of you to keep us from getting canceled.”
Thompson later said about some key nominees, “Stranger Things was hard to watch because it’s so scary, Squid Game was hard to watch because it’s so violent, and Yellowjackets was hard to watch because it’s on Showtime.”
He said that Squid Game was about people struggling to make money. “Joining the cast of next season: Netflix,” he joked, referencing the streamer’s stock downturn. He later praised Abbott Elementary’s team for donating...
