The films up for the 2024 Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar are “Golda,” “Maestro,” “Oppenheimer,” “Poor Things,” and “Society of the Snow.” Our current odds show that “Maestro” (10/3) is favored to win, followed in order by “Poor Things” (71/20), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), “Society of the Snow” (9/2), and “Golda” (9/2).
This lineup is the category’s second in a row to include a 54% first-timer majority, thus constituting a new trend after 70% remained the norm for the preceding half decade. The present rookie subset consists of “Golda” trio Suzi Battersby, Karen Hartley Thomas, and Ashra Kelly-Blue as well as one artist from each other film: Luisa Abel (“Oppenheimer”), Ana López-Puigcerver (“Society of the Snow”), Lori McCoy-Bell (“Maestro”), and Josh Weston (“Poor Things”).
McCoy-Bell and Weston share their respective nominations with Kazu Hiro and Mark Coulier, each of whom succeeded on two of his previous four outings. While Coulier won for “The Iron Lady” (2012) and “The Grand Budapest Hotel...

He’s your huckleberry and also apparently your guide. To mark the 30th anniversary of Tombstone, Val Kilmer, who played gunfighter/dentist/Wyatt Earp Bff in the 1993 western, posted behind-the-scenes footage he shot during the making of the film.
Stamped with “August 26th, 1993”, the footage shows trailers marked “Doc” and “Wyatt”, for lawman Earp as played by Kurt Russell. The footage then shows Russell outside of his trailer, with cameraman Kilmer assuring him, “You’ve arrived! You’re a pro!” Russell then shows photos of himself and the real Earp side by side, challenging the viewer to figure out who is who, even referencing an old Memorex ad just to further date the clip.

Actor Pierce Brosnan has been cited in Wyoming for allegedly walking in thermal areas of Yellowstone National Park. Court documents reveal that the citations were listed as petty offenses and included traveling by foot in prohibited areas and violating closures and use limits.
Brosnan, 70, has been ordered to appear at the Yellowstone Justice Center on January 23.
Yellowstone National Park is renowned for its hydrothermal features, such as hot springs, geysers and mud pots, and the park’s official website advises visitors to stay on designated boardwalks and trails in thermal areas due to the potential dangers. Hot springs, in particular, have caused more injuries and fatalities in Yellowstone than any other natural feature.

Tgif shows were iconic and still resonate with audiences today, with beloved sitcoms that focused on family values and wholesome comedy. Not all Tgif shows enjoyed the same success, with some like "On Our Own" and "Baby Talk" failing to take off due to gimmicks and being critically panned. Shows like "Family Matters," "Step by Step," and "Full House" made a lasting impact, with memorable characters and storylines that continue to be loved by viewers.
Tgif may have stood for "Thank God It's Friday," but ABC put its spin on 1980s and 1990s TV shows with a block of family-friendly sitcom programming known as "Thank Goodness It's Funny," resulting in some of the most iconic Tgif shows. Late actor Robin Williams made sure he could eat with his family once a week.
The “Mrs. Doubtfire” star, who took his own life in 2014 at the age of 63, had Zelda, 34, and 32-year-old Cody with ex-wife Marsha Garces Williams and now his eldest has explained that whilst his career didn’t leave much time for formal traditions, he did try to make sure everyone got together for a meal every Tuesday.
Zelda told People, “Dad’s job made it pretty hard to keep anything like a yearly tradition really, aside from Thanksgiving or days when sets would shut down.”
“So we didn’t really have much in the way of that, but cooking together was a big part of our family. We would eat together every Tuesday, however many family members were in town.”

"Smokey and the Bandit" was a delightful '70s action-comedy movie; it spawned two sequels, the first of which was pretty damn good. For a modern audience looking back, the series was also remarkably star-studded. It featured beloved late actors like Burt Reynolds, Jackie Gleason, Patrick McCormick, and Mike Henry, most of whom are still fondly remembered over forty years after the first movie came out. Although the series itself isn't quite as well-known among today's young viewer as we'd probably prefer, most of its cast certainly is.
But what about the actors in the series who are still alive today? What are they up to? Let's check in on the lives and careers of the remaining "Smokey and the Bandit" cast, and see how they're holding up. We might never get to see that Seth MacFarlane-penned revival series we heard about back in 2020, but it's not time to...

In the 1990s, Hollywood's obsession with intellectual property wasn't nearly as all-consuming as it is now, but studios were still interested in giving themselves a perceived leg up by occasionally leaning on source material that might be familiar to audiences. The absolute best-case scenario for this type of situation was "The Fugitive," a new spin on an old TV series. With a $44 million budget, Chicago-born director Andrew Davis turned what could have been a by-the-numbers chase flick into a worldwide smash hit (only behind "Jurassic Park" and "Mrs. Doubtfire") that earned seven Academy Award nominations, with Tommy Lee Jones going on to win Best Supporting Actor. It's the rare action film to be nominated for Best Picture, its star turns from Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones are pitch-perfect, its ensemble is comprised of a murderer's row of terrific character actors, and the film's breathless pacing always keeps you on the edge of your seat.

"The goal for me, always, is try to make a movie that feels timeless, that people will watch years from now," said "Mrs. Doubtfire" director Chris Columbus in a recent interview with Ktvu.
The character of Mrs. Doubtfire actually has her roots in a real person -- not a recently-divorced father pulling a desperate gambit to see more of his kids, but the owner of a second hand clothing shop in Edinburgh. The shop was called Madame Doubtfire and, colloquially, so was its owner, though her name after remarrying was Annabella Coutts. She was something of a local legend, with one Edinburgh resident recalling that she had "about half a dozen cats" and that while her shop was an excellent resource for high-quality second hand goods,...

The film, directed by Chris Columbus and starring the incomparable Robin Williams, became a cultural touchstone, exploring themes of family, divorce, and identity with a lighthearted touch. There are few actors more beloved than Robin Williams. His acclaimed filmography is across a variety of genres – ranging from comedic classics like Jumanji and Mrs. Doubtfire to more dramatic turns in Dead Poets Society and Good Will Hunting. This medley of roles solidified his status as a cinematic icon and revered stand-up comedian. It’s hard to imagine a time when he wasn’t a national treasure, but even the greatest actors must start somewhere, often with minor roles that could easily wind up on the cutting room floor. And funnily enough, that’s exactly what happened.

Robin Williams’ iconic turn in “Mrs. Doubtfire” may be revisited for an upcoming documentary.
Director Chris Columbus revealed to Insider during the 30th anniversary for the 1993 family film that he hopes to turn the 2 million feet of footage into a documentary about late actor Williams’ approach to improv acting.
“Yeah, we are talking about it and trying to get it done,” Columbus said. “I mean, there’s 2 million feet of film in that warehouse so there could be something we can do with all of that. There are roughly 972 boxes of footage from ‘Doubtfire’ — footage we used in the movie, outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage — in a warehouse somewhere and we would like to hire an editor to go in and look at all of that footage.”
He continued, “We want to show Robin’s process. There is something special and magical about how he went about his work and I think...

1993 was a watershed year for cinema, with a wide range of movies that appealed to all audience types, revolutionizing how audiences watched films. The diversity of popular and niche films in 1993 was unmatched, with blockbusters like Jurassic Park and intellectually substantive films like Schindler's List both doing well at the box office. While other years in the 1990s had their standout movies, none could compare to the depth and ground-breaking achievements of 1993, making it the best year ever for movies.
While the entirety of the 1990s was an incredible, ground-breaking time for movies, 1993 stands out, not just as the best year for films that decade — but potentially as the best year for movies ever. The era of the modern blockbuster began to take shape in the 1980s, but the highest-grossing movies of the 1990s were revolutionary when it came to what films would look like for the next 30 years. Mrs. Doubtfire director Chris Columbus reflected on Mrs. Doubtfire 2 and the request Robin Williams had for his character in the unmade sequel.
During a recent interview with Business Insider to acknowledge the classic comedy's 30th anniversary, Columbus opened up on what happened with Mrs. Doubtfire 2. He noted how it was something Williams had been against for a very long time, as talks to make the sequel had only started shortly before the beloved actor's death. Columbus explained how a "really strong" screenplay had been written, and a meeting to speak about the movie was the last time he saw Williams. The director remembered how the only request Williams had was to spend less time in the heavy suit and makeup.

Robin Williams' improvisation completely changed the shooting process for Mrs. Doubtfire, with the actor wanting to improvise after a few scripted takes. Williams' improvisation required four cameras and a script supervisor who had to frantically keep up with his constant line changes. Director Chris Columbus acknowledges Williams' legendary status in Mrs. Doubtfire and believes that the actor can never be replaced in any potential sequel due to his unique contributions to the character.

Remembering the legendary comedian, Columbus spoke of his penchant for constant improvisation which led to several retakes, and many surprises as Williams would often deviate from the script to do his own thing.
“We shot almost 2 million feet of film on that picture. Early on in the process, he went to me, ‘Hey boss, the way I like to work, if you’re up for it, is I’ll give you three or four scripted takes, and then let’s play,” the ‘Home Alone’ director told Business Insider as per Deadline.

It’s been nine years since we said goodbye to Robin Williams, who left behind a highlight reel of hilarious scenes and moments of impassioned drama. And no compilation would be complete without any number of clips from 1993’s Mrs. Doubtfire, which, probably for the better, never got a sequel despite being a hit with audiences, proving to be the #2 movie worldwide that year behind Jurassic Park.
As director Chris Columbus put it, “It’s an interesting thing. Back then, there was an attitude that sequels were looked down upon by the artists. So Robin was against doing a sequel immediately after.” Perhaps surprisingly, Williams only ever did a few sequels in his entire career: a Dtv Aladdin one, Happy Feet Two and a pair for Night at the Museum.

Robin Williams improvised enough for "almost two million feet" of 'Mrs Doubtfire' footage.Director Chris Columbus has recalled how late star Williams - who tragically took his own life aged 63 in 2014 - suggested working on "three or four scripted takes" before having some fun.Speaking to Business Insider, he said: "It got to the point that I had to shoot the entire movie with four cameras to keep up with him.“None of us knew what he was going to say when he got going and so I wanted a camera on the other actors to get their reactions…[The studio was] loving what they were seeing. Did they watch everything? I don’t think so. We shot almost 2 million feet of film on that picture.”Three decades later, Columbus has kept over 900 boxes of footage including heaps of outtakes and unseen behind the scenes clips, and he'd love to turn it all into a documentary.

Director Chris Columbus shot more footage for Mrs Doubtfire than Francis Ford Coppola shot for Apocalypse Now.
The 1993 comedy Mrs Doubtfire proved to be one of the very biggest hits of the much-loved and much-missed Robin Williams’ career. Directed by Chris Columbus and famous in the UK for the muddle over its BBFC certificate – that we’ve charted here – it’s a film that’s very much endured. To the point where there’s now a hit musical based on the movie.
Chris Columbus has been chatting about the movie in an interesting new piece for Business Insider, and he’s unsurprisingly revealed that Williams did an awful lot of improvisation on the movie. So much so that, well, more material was shot for Mrs Doubtfire than Francis Ford Coppola shot for Apocalypse Now.

“Mrs. Doubtfire” director Chris Columbus marked the film’s 30th anniversary this month with a new interview courtesy of Business Insider, in which he revealed that 2 million feet of film was shot during the making of the 1993 comedy because Robin Williams improvised so much dialogue. The film is home to one of Williams’ most classic characters. He plays a recently-divorced actor who disguises himself as an elderly female housekeeper so that he can continue to see his children.
“Early on in the process, he went to me, ‘Hey boss, the way I like to work, if you’re up for it, is I’ll give you three or four scripted takes, and then let’s play,'” Columbus remembered about working with Williams. “By saying that, what he meant was he wanted to improvise. Chris Columbus says he has 972 boxes of footage ready to be used for a documentary about filming Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams.
The film’s director opened up about his doc dreams, along with those scrapped sequel plans and the two million feet of film he amassed while shooting Williams in a 30th anniversary piece published by Insider on Tuesday. The doc, in particular, was something Columbus says “we are talking about it and trying to get it done.”
“There are roughly 972 boxes of footage from Doubtfire — footage we used in the movie, outtakes, behind-the-scenes footage — in a warehouse somewhere and we would like to hire an editor to go in and look at all of that,” he explained.
According to Columbus, the motivation for the documentary is to highlight and celebrate Williams’ process. “There is something special and magical about how he went about his work, and I think...

Mrs. Doubtfire director Chris Columbus reveals that he and Robin Williams got together in 2014 to discuss a completed script for the sequel, with the actor requesting fewer scenes that required a full makeup transformation. Williams would tragically pass away that same year, and Columbus now expresses hope that Disney never makes Mrs. Doubtfire 2. Williams was a singular comedic performer, meaning that recasting the character for a sequel would never work.
Director Chris Columbus comments on the unmade Mrs. Doubtfire 2 and Robin Williams' thoughts on the stalled project. Released in 1993, Mrs. Doubtfire remains one of Williams' most iconic movie roles. The film sees the late comedic superstar playing actor Daniel Hillard, who transforms himself into the titular nanny in order to spend time with his children following a bitter divorce.
Now, Columbus speaks with Business Insider for Mrs. Doubtfire's 30th anniversary, recalling Williams' thoughts about a sequel and just how close they got to making it.

Robin Williams delivered a stellar performance in Mrs. Doubtfire, showcasing his range by flawlessly portraying both Daniel Hillard and the strict yet nurturing Mrs. Doubtfire. Sally Field, who played Miranda Hillard, has continued her successful acting career after Mrs. Doubtfire, starring in major films like Forrest Gump and The Amazing Spider-Man series. Some of the cast members, including Williams, have sadly passed away.
Mrs. Doubtfire is a timeless classic, and the Robin Williams-lead cast stole the hearts of audiences everywhere. The film follows Daniel Hillard (played by Robin Williams) a fun-loving yet immature father of three who is more interested in being the life of the party than honoring his responsibility as a parent. After finding out that Miranda is seeking a new housekeeper, Daniel, in a desperate attempt to spend more time with his children, decides to apply for the job himself under the false identity of Mrs. Doubtfire,...

The live-action Scooby-Doo movies of the early 2000s are a great example of how to do live-action reboots right, capturing the essence of the cartoons while adding a different spin to the characters. The films feature an incredible cast that perfectly brings the characters' quirks to life, especially Matthew Lillard's portrayal of Shaggy, which led to him becoming Shaggy's full-time voice actor in later cartoons. The movies are hilarious, with jokes rooted in the characters and clever throwbacks to the Scooby-Doo franchise, making them a perfect reflection of the cartoon while also serving as an introduction to new viewers.
While they may get a bad reputation, the live-action Scooby-Doo movies of the early 2000s are actually great. With franchise reboots in abundance, and rarely executed well, these movies are a great example of how to do it right. The original live-action Scooby-Doo films managed to capture the...

Mrs. Doubtfire, a classic comedy film set in San Francisco, utilized recognizable landmarks like Fort Mason and Chinatown to bring the story to life. The iconic Hillard House, located at 2640 Steiner Street, served as the main setting in the movie and remains a popular tourist attraction since its release. Daniel Hillard's apartment, on 520-522 Green Street, played a pivotal role in the film as the place where he transformed into Mrs. Doubtfire. Marisa Tomei's win for Best Supporting Actress in My Cousin Vinny sparked controversy due to her status as a newcomer in Hollywood compared to the more seasoned nominees. A comedy film winning in the Best Supporting Actress category was unprecedented, as dramas typically dominated the category at the Academy Awards. A conspiracy theory arose suggesting that Tomei only won because of a mistake by the presenter or due to some grand scheme in Hollywood, despite her deserving the award for her stellar performance.

Yet one film has a cult following and a wild conspiracy attached to it.

Jimmy Karz, who played Bruce Bogtrotter in Matilda, retired from acting in 1998 and focused on service-oriented work, including community gardening and teaching people from low-income communities how to grow their own food. Karz reunited with the original Matilda cast in 2013 for an Afternoon Tea Matilda Reunion. Robin Williams was known for being a great dramatic actor as much as he was known for his comedies like Mrs. Doubtfire. In Insomnia, Williams used his dramatic chops when working alongside Al Pacino and Christopher Nolan. But when Williams tried to use his comedy on Nolan behind the scenes, Nolan didn’t take to it too well.
