Steven Moffat chats to us about Doctor Who, the changing face of television, and the internet culture around it...
Ahead of the release of Doctor Who series 10 on DVD and Blu-ray – it lands on Monday, and is available digitally now – outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat did a select few interviews to chat about the show. And he saved one for us.
It was refreshing that, having got lost myself on the way to the interview venue in the depths of London, Moffat himself managed to as well. Apologetic for arriving ten minutes late for our chat, he insisted on adding those minutes to the end of our time, and that’s not something that happens very often with interviews.
With that in mind, we settled down for a long chat about the show, the environment it exists in, and series 10 itself…

Welcome to the third installment of E! News' newest weekly feature, What They Watch, a profile of those working in TV and their TV loves and habits both past and present. Leslie Grossman has been everywhere lately, in the best way. She played Meadow Wilton on this season of American Horror Story (until she died, Rip), and also appeared in flashbacks as Eleanor's mom on The Good Place. She has also had guest appearances on Scandal, Speechless, 2 Broke Girls, Modern Family, Faking It, Girlfriend's Guide to Divorce, Grey's Anatomy, What I Like About You, 10 Things I Hate About You, CSI, Charmed, and many more. But perhaps there are two things Grossman is best known and loved for:...

The 55th New York Film Festival brought together cinematographers Vittorio Storaro (The Conformist, Apocalypse Now) and Ed Lachman (Carol, The Limey) for a master class on the occasion of both having films in the fest’s main slate. Lachman lensed Todd Haynes’ Centerpiece film Wonderstruck and Storaro did Woody Allen’s Closing Night film Wonder Wheel.
Festival director Kent Jones hosted the two at the Walter Reade Theater on October 11 for an all-encompassing talk of their cinematic philosophies and the cinematographers’ 40-year friendship.
Storaro and Lachman showed clips from films that inspire them and clips of their own work. The clips were a launching pad to discuss the difficult-to-pin cinematic language of photographic storytelling. We’ve included key quotes from their talk and the complete video of masterclass below.
Lachman on Storaro
Vittorio has done more in the last 50 years for the recognition and esteem of cinematography than anybody.

If you're familiar with martial art of Wing Chun, it may be because of the movie Ip Man, which displayed the Chinese discipline to a global audience. For Master Wong, however, the elements of Wing Chun are not dazzling stunts -- they're practical maneuvers that can help users defend themselves in public. Wong is a martial arts master and YouTube star whose videos demonstrate Wing Chun techniques and teach viewers how to deploy those moves in a fight.
Wong's instructional style is pragmatic, but also colorful. He punctuates his interactions with his students by adding in off-the-cuff quips that give his videos a fun, light-hearted feel, in spite of the violence within them. That appealing combination has helped Wong, who is partnered with BroadbandTV, surpass one million YouTube subscribers. Here are his thoughts about that achievement:

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “The Deuce” Season 1, Episode 1, “Pilot.”]
When “Vinyl” debuted in February 2016, it was a big deal — for HBO. With a feature-length pilot directed by Martin Scorsese and an enticing ensemble cast including Bobby Cannavale, Ray Romano, and Olivia Wilde, the new drama series was meant to be the next “Boardwalk Empire”; which was, in itself, the next “Sopranos.”

That obviously didn’t happen. Despite the prestige names in front of and behind the camera, as well as a popular period setting in ’70s rock n’ roll era New York City, viewers didn’t spark to the drug-fueled ride.
Time will tell if they take to “The Deuce,” but the fire has been lit — and Michelle MacLaren set it off.

“It’s the disposal,” says Tim Roth. “The killing isn’t the problem, it’s the disposal that’s the problem. You run out of space.” The storage issues faced by serial killers aren’t something to which many of us will have devoted much thought. Roth has. Reassuringly, he’s had reason to thanks to his recent sinister role as real-life murderer Reg Christie in BBC drama Rillington Place. “Charming fella” he jokes.

Though not quite as impenetrable as the big screen side of the McU, which is 16 movies long and counting, Marvel‘s Netflix output is still pretty dense. So far, it comprises two seasons of Daredevil and one a piece for Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist. Not to mention the newly-released Defenders miniseries. In total, that’s a whopping 60 hours of television.
It’s interesting, then, to look at how different fans find their way into the Marvel/Netflix franchise. You could do it chronologically and start with Daredevil. Or you could begin with The Defenders and then work your way back. Intriguingly, though, most people go for an alternate viewing order.

TV shows get cancelled all the time, and it’s the brutal nature of the business that some series will end before the creators are ready to say goodbye.
But “Kingdom” wasn’t supposed to end now, and not like this. The Audience Network’s flagship drama about a family of Mma fighters will air its series finale tonight, August 2, after three seasons, 40 episodes, and quite a few rounds in the cage.
Byron Balasco’s drama is only available to DirecTV subscribers, so it didn’t earn great ratings. However, sources told IndieWire that audience share wasn’t the problem. Wednesday’s ending wasn’t written as a series finale; Balasco turned in the script months ago, before it was announced Season 3 would be the last. (The production company, Endemol Shine Group, and distributor, DirecTV, declined to comment.)

First off, it’s probably fair to say that most people have no idea what a colorist is or how important the position. It’s the colorist’s job to be certain that all the colors in each shot, from scene to scene, are balanced. They make certain that every shot in each sequence matches; with no single shot appearing as if it doesn’t belong with the rest. They watch for color differences and correct them. They are responsible for making sure there is consistency for the entire production. It’s an important role because filming often includes varied day or night environment and

One of the best video essays to-date on the director’s thematic body of work.
Paul Thomas Anderson, despite the seeming variety of his filmography, only really makes movies about a few things: lost souls, the search for meaning or purpose in life, and the struggle for/against family.
In Boogie Nights the lost soul is Eddie Adams and he is searching for his value, his place in the world, all while struggling against who his parents, particularly his mother, think he is and thus should be, and who he actually wants to be; it’s a search and struggle that lead him into the embrace of an unconventional but accepting new family, that of Jack Horner’s porn enclave.
In Magnolia pretty much the entire cast is made up of lost souls searching for connection, redemption, and/or acceptance from families of blood, circumstance, and their own forging.

After all, there were holiday parties to host, cards to send and then on Monday, Aunt Caroline’s birthday to celebrate.
Now it’s Princess Charlene’s turn to party, as she turns 39 on Wednesday — and with time counting down, Prince Albert tells People he has shopping on his agenda.
“Christmas was great,” he says. “The kids got a bunch of different toys — puzzles, a Playmobil house. I assembled that myself with help from my brother-in-law Sean. We screwed a few bolts in.

What happens when a prosecutor tracks down one of the most evil criminals of the century, only to find that politics and corruption prevent him from issuing an arrest warrant? This is the true story of the hunt for the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann — not from the Pov of the Israeli agents that pounced on him in Argentina, but a German prosecutor hemmed in on all sides by Nazi sympathizers in his own government bureaucracy.

These days you can use Snapchat to peek into Khloe Kardashian’s workouts, see Jessica Alba play with her kids, and — thanks to Dr. Matthew Schulman — watch a plastic surgeon at work.
The New York City board-certified plastic surgeon has over one million viewers a day view his Snapchat Stories, which document a day in his life of tummy tucks, breast lifts and nose jobs.
Dr. Schulman says he enjoys giving people a direct view into his operating room.
“They’re seeing things as it’s actually happening,” he tells People. “They watch me and they know me, they know my staff.

When the first Passengers trailer came out, it presented the movie as a thriller akin to Gravity. But a new look at the film seems to be riffing on some other films in the Sandra Bullock canon. It’s While You Were Sleeping...in space! Or Two Weeks Notice...in space! Or some other rom com...in space! Gone are the shots of our two dashing leads in peril, replaced by images of them frolicking around having a grand old time on a spaceship. They watch a movie. They go swimming. They have dinner. They have sex. They dance in a goofy fashion. Then they venture out into the great unknown in suits, possibly on a suicide mission. Who knows?
This is all scored to a treacly original song from Imagine Dragons, “Levitate,” about how she’s his shooting star because, you know, they are flying among those balls of...

Halloween is a time when regular folk allow themselves to see the world as us horror lovers do – weird and wonderful, sinister mischief with tongue in cheek under (and over) tones. They watch that scary movie they’ve been meaning to get to for the past year, string up skeletons, and parade around at office parties in the latest ironic costumes (expect tons of Trumps and Weiners this year). But for the fearful faithful, this is our workaday; we watch the films daily, display our rooms with terror trinkets, and dress up as our favourite icons at constant conventions around the globe. So what separates the actual day of Halloween from our normal routine? TV viewing, of course.

Screen Producers Australia will hold its 31st Annual Conference from November 15-17 at the Crown Conference Centre in Melbourne. Spa CEO Matthew Deaner tells If what to expect.
This is your fourth conference looking after Screen Producers Australia. How.s it changed in your time at the helm?
We deliberately decided that we should rebrand it Screen Forever, and look at it as a 360° content conference but through the prism of people that make content. That.s kept us in good stead because it.s given the conference a bigger trajectory, and the conversations aren.t just through one prism. People aren.t just putting earmuffs on and trying to bang their own drum. The conference is one of the few environments now where everyone gets to sit around the table and listen to each other.

Here’s the joke—if you can call it that—of Homo Sapiens, the eerie and post-apocalyptic new documentary piece by Austria’s Nikolaus Geyrhalter: It’s got no people in it. Shot all over the world, the film offers a breathtaking array of abandoned places. None of them are identified (no narration, no text, no trace of human presence), though some are well-known: the Buzludzha Monument in Bulgaria, which resembles a massive Communist spaceship that sustained a crash landing; Japan’s Hashima Island, a nightmarish maze of concrete apartment blocks and stairways that was abandoned in the 1970s; the streets and shops of the Fukushima exclusion zone; the so-called Cavern Of The Lost Souls, a subterranean lake in Wales used to dump old cars. One almost wishes that Geyrhalter (Our Daily Bread) had come up with a less on-the-nose title. But then, what else could he call it?...

Opening on June 24th is director Roland Emmerich’s Independence Day: Resurgence.
We always knew they were coming back. After Independence Day redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global spectacle on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
The film stars Liam Hemsworth, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Judd Hirsch, Vivica A. Fox, Brent Spiner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Jessie Usher, Maika Monroe, and Sela Ward.

Yesterday, I published my review of Netflix's Love, one of my favorite new shows of the year so far. (Its first season debuts Friday.) A romantic comedy about a walking disaster of a woman (Gillian Jacobs) and the nice guy (Paul Rust) who falls for her, it was co-created by Rust, Lesley Arfin, and Judd Apatow, who between Freaks and Geeks, Girls, and his many movies (including Trainwreck, whose title he says he lifted from this project), has plenty of experience finding the most mortifying aspects of interpersonal relationships. At press tour last month, Apatow and I spoke about the Netflix experience and the many ways TV has changed since his days on Freaks and Geeks and The Larry Sanders Show, why he thinks comedy episodes shouldn't be limited to 30 minutes, how Jacobs (who had a recurring role on Girls last season) wound up in Love, and a lot more.

Over the last few years, Netflix has arguably done more to change the way we watch, talk, and think about television than anyone since HBO in the turn of the century days of "The Sopranos," "Sex and the City," and "Six Feet Under." Between their library of titles licensed from more traditional TV operations and their ever-growing stable of original series, Netflix has conditioned viewers to binge-watch shows, has encouraged its creators to design shows made explicitly for that model, and has pushed television in general into a more serialized direction, since the most lucrative afterlife for many shows lies in being sold to a streaming service rather than into traditional rerun syndication. During an appearance at the TCA press tour earlier this month, Netflix's chief content officer Ted Sarandos said that the service would be offering over 600 hours of original content this year, and spending over $6 billion to...

What did you think happened during the commercial break when Amy Poehler was on The Tonight Show? That Jimmy Fallon would gaze absentmindedly at his phone and Amy Poehler would smell her hair? No! These two are friends! They used to be on SNL together! They watch the commercials, too, and speculate on whether Chuck and Carrie are married. Chuck and Carrie Are Not Married, by the way, is a movie we'd pay to see, but only if they make the poster that pose. It's classic Chuck and Carrie!

In what's become an annual Halloween tradition like trick-or-treating, scary movie marathons and questionable costumes, Jimmy Kimmel Live! has once again recruited parents to tell their children they ate all of their Halloween candy while recording their reaction. Now in its fifth year, "I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy" received a "record number" of submissions in 2015, with Kimmel picking out the best instances of intense crying, temper tantrums, fainting fits and, in some cases, physical violence toward the candy-consuming parent. As one girl screams in the video,...

We know them so we've been dealing with them and their people and hopefully they'll say yes." Anderson, who was up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series last night, revealed in January that he learned the first family were fans. "I was...

The director of Mercenary: Absolution talks to us about international appeal, tough guys, and all things Seagal...
I’m Den of Geek’s go to guy for Steven Seagal movies and, as such, was very excited when the opportunity to interview Keoni Waxman arose. He’s directed six movies that have starred Seagal and worked on the TV series True Justice with the big man.
Not only was I excited to speak to Waxman because I like his films, I thought he’d be an interesting interview subject. While I understand that interviews with big Hollywood stars are more popular, I felt like I would have a chance to speak to someone that many Den of Geek readers wouldn’t know much about, and that he’d be able to offer us an interesting perspective on a part of the film industry that we don’t have much access to.

“Funny how secrets travel,” David Bowie croons as the music thumps. The camera zooms down a dark desolate highway, illuminated only by the twin beams of a speeding car’s headlights. This is the beginning of David Lynch’s Lost Highway, and it sets the mood for the chaos to come.
Lynch rose to auteur status with unflinchingly distinct films crafted with a fetishistic fever. They were challenging and downright weird films that made unsuspecting audiences uncomfortable while simultaneously earning the director acclaim. They were the types of films that seemed to exist within their own self-contained universes where the past and present would collide, often violently. As much as Lynch became a cult icon in America, his fame here couldn’t hold a candle to the praise he gathered overseas–especially in France. The French loved Lynch, and in the late 1990s, thanks to French financing, Lynch was able to direct Lost Highway,...

Ok, so that's probably not gonna happen, but it did for another particular TV fan who loved the last show created by Mark Schwahn, One Tree Hill. Her name? Kate Middleton. "I was told Will and Kate were big fans," Schwahn tells me. "I was approached about season four of five of One Tree Hill. And they said, 'William and Kate love the show. They watch it all the time. Can we put together some box sets for them? Can we send along some stuff?' Obviously they were dating. And I said, 'Cool. Let's send them some stuff!'" Schwahn hopes that Will and Kate would...

We have a theory.
After careful consideration and plenty of small screen experiments, we think that tonight's episode of The Big Bang Theory might just become our new favorite episode of all-time. We're totally serious! In fact, the caliber of laughs reminded us of this iconic moment…
Tonight's half-hour adventure doesn’t have the swoon-factor of Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy's (Mayim Bialik) first "I love you," the character progression like when Raj (Kunal Nayyar) finally got a girlfriend, or the hilarious group dynamic of Howard's (Simon Helberg) impression-packed Dungeon & Dragons game.
However, "The Troll Manifestation" could eclipse them all for just three simple reasons: 1. It's genuinely laugh-out-loud funny. 2. Each character gets an equal amount of time to shine. 3. It's jam-packed with Big Bang's signature surprises that continue to blow us away.

Hey parents, can you believe it hasn’t even been a year since Frozen came out? I know, it feels like you’ve been hearing you kids belt “Let It Go” for eons, but the Disney animated feature officially opened on a single screen in Hollywood on November 22, 2013, before going wide five days later. Technically, though, it did play as early as November 10th, at the New York Children’s Film Festival, so I guess we can start celebrating its first birthday. Stuff some cake in its face, because it’s barely a baby anymore. My son is pretty young, so he didn’t see Frozen until a couple months ago (it’s also when I had my viewing), and ever since he’s wanted to watch it all the time. Whether he calls the movie “Let It Go” or claims Elsa’s name is “Let It Go” or mostly wants to watch Olaf the snowman, not...

After a series high last week where audiences played at being a Time Lord, complete with all the haunting decisions that stick with you forever, what adventure will our plucky heroes get up to this week? With no real villain* to tie the season together, it’s like getting dressed in the dark as to what theme we’ll be exploring each week is. Will there be ramifications to Clara’s psyche for letting people die on her watch? Will Danny discover her lies? Only time will tell “In the Forest of the Night.” *Obviously Missy is the Big Bad™ (or the Big Red Herring™) but she’s too mysterious to be properly afraid of. She hasn’t even welcomed anyone to “Heaven” in forever. ************ A little girl is running through the forest to an ethereal soundtrack right out of Middle Earth. There are spiderwebs — again? — and I momentarily fear for her mortal safety.

Andrew Lofland (Ben Feldman) and Zelda Vasco (Cristin Milioti) dated, and it didn't work out. How they met and all that transpired in between, categorized alphabetically, is the premise of NBC's new comedy A to Z. While smartly written, the gimmicky nature of the show, and its resemblance to How I Met Your Mother, leads me to believe that the series will follow in the footsteps of its protagonists.
Andrew is a guys' guy which means he hangs with a guy named Stu (Henry Zebrowski) a typical TV male best friend. He's obnoxious, single and often offers horrible advice. They watch sports and pee standing up, so that quantifies the whole guy thing.

During most of the 1970s and ’80s, broadcast networks would try to build excitement for each fall season by unveiling a new or reworked slogan and, with it, an on-air image campaign — elaborate two- and three-minute commercials in which all the stars of a network would gather to mug for the camera, dance around, and maybe even sing a song. Baby boomers fondly recall ABC’s “Still the One” brand (yes, there were hot-air balloons); many of us Gen Xers can still recite the lyrics to NBC’s “Let’s All Be There” song on command. By the mid to late 1990s, however, marketing execs had decided that viewers no longer watched networks: “They watch shows,” as more than one exec told me (and other reporters) at the time. Good-bye, dancing celebs. Thankfully, this utterly stupid thinking had not fully taken hold by the 1994–95 season. ABC, the No. 1 network at...

Hollywood can be a forgiving place for those who treat it right. The lost souls who’ve escaped the misery of their former lives to seek the bright lights of Tinseltown can find solace in creating movies and memories with like-minded individuals who’ll stand up for each other when the chips are down.
However, if you’re not humble, then people will find out. The same goes for those who are cruel, though there’s a sliding scale for exactly what cruelties are acceptable in Hollywood. Film sets can be tense places due to the long hours of the people working on them and the creative differences and egos of those at the top of the pecking order, and this is where the cruelties can come out.
On-set tantrums are well-known for establishing a famous actor or director as ‘difficult to work with’, and can seriously damage careers.
