On the morning of January 23, 2024, actor Gary Graham, star of the "Alien Nation" TV series, the cult classic "Robot Jox," and multiple-time "Star Trek" supporting player, passed away at the age of 74. Graham had a prolific acting career, appearing in single episodes of many of the hottest TV shows of his day, including "Starsky & Hutch," "The Incredible Hulk," Knots Landing," "CHiPs," "T.J. Hooker," "Hunter," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," "Diagnosis Murder," "Ally McBeal," "Jag," and "Nip/Tuck." He had an easy demeanor, allowing him to play comedic affable characters just as well as intense, serious ones.
Trekkies likely know Graham best for playing Soval on "Star Trek: Enterprise." Soval was the snippy Vulcan ambassador who oversaw Earth's very, very slow transition from post-war ruin to a thriving society ready for space exploration. In the timeline of "Star Trek," humanity discovers warp-speed flight while the world is recovering from nuclear devastation. On the very first Earth warp flight,...

As with many superheroes, Blue Beetle has a long and varied publishing history. The original version of the character first appeared in the pages of Fox Comics' "Mystery Men Comics" #1 way back in August of 1939, around the same time Superman and Batman were just gaining traction. That version of Blue Beetle gained superpowers by consuming special vitamin tablets. A second version of Blue Beetle was folded into DC Comics during its notorious Crisis on Infinite Earths event — Blue Beetle 2.0 was more like Iron Man, using technology and a super-powered suit to fight crime.
The most recent version of Blue Beetle -- the version that inspired the character in Angel Manuel Soto's upcoming feature film -- is a teenager named Jaime Reyes who chances into the possession of a mystical scarab that attaches to his body and grants him a "living" costume that adapts to protect him. Like Venom, the...

Dave Bautista will not be the next Bane in the “Batman” movieverse.
Bautista described his determination in April 2021 to play the Batman villain when he met with Warner Bros. at JusticeCon in April 2021.
“I’m not kidding. They were a little like, ‘Woah, we’re not even casting Bane.’ I was like ‘I don’t care, I’m playing him.'”
Bautista may have thought that the door of opportunity was more open now that his “Guardians of the Galaxy” director, James Gunn, is in charge of DC Studios.

However, in a new interview with Insider, Bautista explained how they’re “starting from scratch” in a “younger” direction which won’t include the 54-year-old actor.
“I have had conversations with James about that,” Bautista began.

We here at /Film love ourselves some Sam Raimi. The auteur filmmaker has been dazzling audiences for over 40 years, with genre-bending films like "The Evil Dead," "Crimewave," "The Quick and the Dead," "Darkman," "Drag Me to Hell," and the original "Spider-Man" films, not to mention lending his hand to TV shows like "Xena: Warrior Princess," "M.A.N.T.I.S.," and "Hercules." Raimi's refusal to be pigeon-holed into one genre and his unapologetic love of taking huge creative risks have made him a favorite of film fans everywhere.

Lumbly recently had a recurring role as the father of J’onn J’onzz, aka the Martian Manhunter, on The CW series Supergirl. (It was a live-action role that called back to his earlier voice work portraying the Martian Manhunter himself on the well-regarded Justice League animated series)

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: Who is an underrated TV superhero that deserves more respect/attention? (Old and current shows are fair game.)
Allison Keene (@KeeneTV), Collider
This is tough because my outlet puts a premium on superheroes, so really none are overlooked as far as we’re concerned. However, I haven’t seen as much general love for “Black Lightning” as the show deserves. Maybe people are burned out by the deluge of Dctv, much of which is past its prime, though others are exceptionally innovative and increasingly great (“Legends of Tomorrow”). But “Black Lightning” provides something that we aren’t seeing elsewhere in superhero series. For one thing, Black Lightning himself, Jefferson Pierce, is older than all the current supers on TV — the show starts with him coming out of retirement,...

This week’s question: Who is the best TV director? Why? (For old, current or upcoming shows.)

The recent Emmy Awards was a good reminder of just how great television directors are right now. It was the best overall crop we’ve had in years, and one of the few categories where it felt like it could have gone any way.
But in terms of best television director, I’m partial to David Nutter. His 30-plus year resume is impressive (“The Sopranos,” “ER,” “The X-Files,” plus an Emmy win for “Game of Thrones”) and wildly varied (he’s done procedurals like “Without a Trace,...

Would we have had Mutant Enemy or Bad Robot without Sam Raimi, Bruce Campbell and Robert Tapert's Renaissance Pictures? David thinks not...
After 1992's Army Of Darkness, another Sam Raimi feature film wouldn't emerge in theatres for another three years. What Raimi did with the time in between is anybody's guess - perhaps he wandered the world; maybe he dug through a peculiar collection of Spider-Man comics with most of the dialogue cut out. But what he certainly did with his Renaissance Pictures partners was bring to light a new frontier of genre TV (cue heroic music and a narrator saying, "This is the story of a time long ago – a time of myth and legend. When the ancient gods were petty and cruel, and they plagued mankind with suffering, only one man dared to challenge their power...")

Superheroes are still in. Case in point: the Fox Network, ever eager to remain the top destination pick for tweens, teens and young adults, bought an idea for one from 24 producer Howard Gordon and Chronicle screenwriter Max Landis. This new show is called Vigilant, and it circles around a young woman who dresses up as a vigilante to fight corruption in the police force as well as bad guys on the street.
Vigilant's logline sounds like it could be Batman meets a TV crime drama: the daughter of a good cop can't stand by while her father is forced to get his hands dirty dealing with a corrupt Internal Affairs head, so she makes herself a costume to expose the rotten apples in the force. She also uses her new secret identity to wage war with the criminals on the street, shaking the status quo up. The Hollywood Reporter describes...

Nathan Fillion and Justice League Doom Line-Up
What is more geektastic than the mere mention of the names Nathan Fillion and Michael Rosenbaum? How about those names mentioned in relation to the Justice League: Doom! Yes, somewhere a fanboy’s head just exploded. In a good way!
On his lonesome, Nathan Fillion is best known as Captain Malcolm Reynolds from Firefly and Serenity, also known as Joss Whedon created geek candy. Yes, I’m a geek myself, so I can say these things. Fillion also happens to star as Richard Castle on the popular ABC series called Castle.
Likewise, Michael Rosenbaum, one of my many celebrity crushes, used to play Lex Luthor on the CW’s Smallville.
Together this pair represents sci fi and comic books in Hollywood. The question is, will they use their powers for good or for evil?
Fillion will reprise his voice acting work as the Green Lantern.

One of the best developments in the last few years is the cultural re-emergence of Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert television. The pair exec-produced the syndicated ’90s fantasy duet Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess (not to mention M.A.N.T.I.S., which was my favorite show ever for a magical three-month period). They tried to recapture the New Zealand magic with Legend of the Seeker in 2008, but things really heated up with Spartacus: Blood and Sand, the hit gladiator show featuring Lucy Lawless, ex-Xena (and Mrs. Rob Tapert!) Now, according to the Hollywood Reporter, Starz is betting on the...

Jennifer Aniston's love life has been so scrutinized since she and Brad Pitt divorced that we're hesitant to believe any stories about it that don't come directly from John Mayer's Twitter feed.
When Aniston was recently snapped by the paparazzi out to dinner with her rumored new boyfriend, TV actor Christopher Gartin, we had some doubts... and it turns out we were right.
"Chris and Jennifer have been friends for many years," Aniston's rep told People . "She has had dinner with him dozens and dozens of times." Another source called their rumored romance "just silly."
Gartin has had minor roles on "Private Practice," "House," "CSI," and everyone's favorite summer vampfest, "True Blood." His most significant TV roles were on "Buddies" and "M.A.N.T.I.S." in the '90s - right around when Aniston skyrocketed to fame on "Friends." The two have been friends for ages, having been introduced by Jen's bestie Courteney Cox.

Ah, to be a Canadian character actor. To be paid to almost anonymously blend into role after role after role, to segue from big-budget action films to small TV movies to guest roles on classic TV series.
In the course of a week, Stephen McHattie will have appeared in the highest-rated program on its broadcast night ("Jesse Stone: Sea Change") and the most eagerly awaited film in the annuls of comic book geekdom ("Watchmen"). No one's watching them for McHattie himself, and it's a shame, because he's the sort of actor who invests every role with a quiet authority, an intensity that seems to be part and parcel of his particular trade.
I noticed McHattie first around 1989, when he appeared in the third season of "Beauty and the Beast," the very example of a show that just couldn't survive once its female lead (Linda Hamilton) because pregnant and opted to leave.
