Tony Bennett's first record, "Because of You" was released in 1952 and it instantly codified the entertainer as one of the music world's great crooners. In 1962, his 15th record, "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" was certified platinum by the RIAA, but that was after he had already established himself with Count Basie and his Orchestra and as a great fan of songwriter Harold Arlen. All told, he released 61 records in his decades-long career, not including his eight albums of collaborations and duets. He sang with Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Ray Charles, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, Mariah Carey, Bono, Sting, Paul McCartney, Diana Krall, and many others. Most recently, he released two collaborations with Lady Gaga in 2018 and 2021. Bennett passed away on July 21, 2023 at the age of 96. He will be deeply missed.

John Roland, who served as a reporter and anchor for Channel 5 in New York for more than three decades, died Sunday, a rep for Fox Television Stations announced. He was 81.
In December 1969, Roland left Kttv in Los Angeles to join sister Metromedia station Wnew in New York as a general assignment reporter. He covered politics during the week and anchored the 10 p.m. newscast on weekends before taking over for Bill Jorgensen on the flagship 10 p.m. weeknight edition in 1979. (News Corp. and Fox took control of the station in 1986, and it was rebranded as Wnyw.)
Roland left the 10 p.m. post in 2003 to anchor new newscasts at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m., then retired to Florida in June 2004.

There are a lot of popular streaming platforms to choose from, but Hulu has always stood alongside Netflix as one of the two essentials for households looking for diversity in content. In the past, they’ve been known for focusing more heavily on newer television content, while Netflix has always offered a larger selection of sought-after films. But now, it looks like Hulu’s June lineup is only going to continue the service’s recent trend of providing high quality movies to bring itself in line with their competitor.
First up, you can get wholesome with Mr. Rogers in A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, which tells the story of an investigative journalist who learns some hard life lessons from one of television’s most beloved personalities. You can then supplement that wholesomeness with My Girl and My Girl 2 for some wonderful 90s nostalgia.

June 2020 is set to be a big month for the whole streaming Disney family. Not only will ESPN+ have the entirety of The Last Dance on its servers for late-adopting sports fans to catch up with, but Disney+ will be premiering its long-awaited Artemis Fowl film. Over on its biggest streaming service in Hulu, however, Disney is taking things a bit more slowly.
This month finds only three major original releases for Hulu. Animated medieval comedy Crossing Swords premieres on June 12, then Ya love story Love Victor and cooking show Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi both arrive on June 19. All in all, that’s not a bad haul for originals for the typically slow summer months.
June 1 sees a pretty impressive crop of movies coming to Hulu’s library as well. October Sky, The X-Files (1998), and Casino will all be ready to stream at the beginning of the month.

Even before he sets foot on the court in an NBA game this season, LeBron James has had quite a year. Continuing a steady stream of film and TV projects through his SpringHill Entertainment and longtime manager Maverick Carter, the basketball megastar has amassed an impressive list of development partnerships across the media landscape.
On the TV side alone, James has struck series deals with every broadcast network, many prestige cable outlets, and a streaming service to boot. Aside from the biggest title on his film docket, the long-awaited “Space Jam 2,” James has lent his stamp to a number of features that exist outside the basketball world.
And these aren’t solely ideas for the future, working their way toward a possible pickup. Since last fall, he’s helped produce all of the following films and programs:

If you’re a baseball fan, particularly if you’re a Dodgers, Astros, Cubs or Yankees fan, the real baseball season started this past Friday with the inauguration of the American and National League Championship Series. I’m a Dodgers fan, which means I’m among that group who, arguably, have gone the longest without the satisfaction/excitement/nail-biting terror of seeing their team in the World Series, the next step for whoever wins in the Nlcs. The Dodgers last appeared in the World Series in 1988, capping a memorable run with a championship by beating the Oakland A’s. That was 29 years ago. The Cubs are the reigning Mlb champions, having won last year’s World Series after a 107-year drought. And the Yankees, a mainstay of the World Series around the turn of this century, last appeared in an October championship series in 2009.

Brendan Fraser’s mummy-killing days may be behind him, but Encino Man will rise again. The actor has just been announced as the villain in “The Field,” a Bollywood gangster drama marking the directorial debut of Rohit Karn Batra. He’s set to star as a gun-runner named Charu whose “illicit dealings with the Indian underworld wedges him in the middle of the family implosion.”

Ray Liotta was initially attached the project when first it was announced in 2014, but alterations to the screenplay led to personnel changes as well. “The more the script evolved,” said Batra, “the more obvious it became Brendan was the best choice for the idiosyncratic role of Charu. For a director to explore this journey with him in a place like India is nothing less than a once in a lifetime opportunity.” India isn’t as well known to the outside world for its hard-hitting genre fare as it is for its musicals, but anyone who’s seen Anurag Kashyap’s five-hour “Gangs of Wasseypur” knows that “The Field” won’t be the first mob movie to emerge from Bollywood.

"Seinfeld" is the easy pop culture moment to talk about in relation to George Steinbrenner, New York Yankees owner who died earlier today after suffering a massive heart attack. He only appeared on the show once, but series co-creator Larry David frequently appeared -- the back of his head anyway -- as the baseball mogul while Jason Alexander's George Costanza held a dream job working for the Yanks. It's great stuff and I don't mean to take anything away from it.
As I was browsing around the Internet this morning after the news broke, I stumbled across a cameo he had in a fun little '90s sports comedy starring Brendan Fraser and Albert Brooks.
I'm talking of course about "The Scout."
Among baseball insiders there's always that white whale prospect, some player in a far-flung region of the world that nobody knows about, but who can game with the best of them.

New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner has died after suffering a heart attack at the age of 80.
Emergency services were called to Steinbrenner's Tampa, Florida home on Monday night and he was admitted to St. Joseph's hospital, where he was reported to be in an "extremely critical condition".
He passed away at around 6.30am (Est) on Tuesday morning, according to the Associated Press.
His death comes just days after he celebrated his 80th birthday on 4 July and two days after longtime Yankees Stadium public announcer Bob Sheppard died at the age of 99.
In a statement, the Steinbrenner family says, "He was an incredible and charitable man. He was a visionary and a giant in the world of sports. He took a great but struggling franchise and turned it into a champion again."
Steinbrenner took over the Yankees in 1973 and the baseball team has won 11 pennants and seven World Series under his ownership, the longest in club history.
Outside the world of sport, Steinbrenner was known for being lampooned, with his permission, on hit TV comedy Seinfeld, when character George Costanza - played by Jason Alexander - worked for the Yankees.
Lee Bear portrayed Steinbrenner, although the character's face was never seen and he was always shot from behind at his office desk at Yankee Stadium. Larry David provided Steinbrenner's voice and the caricature depicted the mogul as a talkative man known for his bad decisions, who sometimes referred to himself as "Big Stein".
Steinbrenner's other TV appearances include a hosting gig on U.S. sketch show Saturday Night Live in 1990, and a movie cameo in Brendan Fraser's 1994 baseball film The Scout. He was referenced in a 1992 episode of The Simpsons, titled Homer at the Bat.
His personal fortune was estimated at a staggering $1.6 billion and he used his cash to invest in six Broadway plays in the 1960s and '70s, including the Tony Award-nominated musical Seesaw in 1974.
Steinbrenner is survived by his wife Elizabeth Zieg and their four children - Hank, Hal, Jessica and Jennifer.

Brendan Fraser has had a bumpy box office track record since he first came to prominence in 1992 with Encino Man. Audiences have most appreciated him in the adventure arena, namely The Mummy movies, with one family-oriented success in George of the Jungle. Other than that, he's never carried a non-adventure hit on his own. This weekend, he's the sole above-the-title-billed star of Furry Vengeance, a family comedy that sees Mr. Fraser mining the territory of some of his worst-performing movies. Encino Man, a comedy in which Fraser played a thawed-out caveman going to high school, opened on Memorial Day weekend in 1992 and ultimately grossed $40.7 million (or the equivalent of over $75 million adjusted for ticket price inflation). The relative success of the movie launched not only Fraser, but Pauly Shore. Shore's two most successful comedies, Son-in-Law and In the Army Now, featured Mr. Fraser in uncredited cameos as his Encino Man character.
