In 2014, Gayle Rankin made her Broadway debut in Sam Mendes’ revival of Cabaret, playing the supporting role of Fraulein Kost. Now, exactly a decade later, Rankin is playing the lead role of Sally Bowles opposite Eddie Redmayne in a new Broadway production that opened April 21.
“I feel like a completely different person,” says Rankin, as she sits in her dressing room in a red dressing gown, with her blond hair clipped back. “It’s so rare that you get to see your life marked by something so actual, by a piece of work. And what a piece of work to be able to gauge where you are as a human being.”
In recent years, the Scottish actress — who grew up south of Glasgow — rose to prominence with a series of film and TV roles, including The Greatest Showman and HBO’s Perry Mason, and most notably as Sheila the She-Wolf...

Schitt’s Creek star Emily Hampshire has apologized for her Halloween costume choice following criticism of her and a friend dressing up as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard.
The actress issued a public apology for their decision to dress up as the ex-couple.
“I want to address what is one of the most thoughtless, insensitive, and ignorant things I’ve ever done. For Halloween, I stupidly thought it would be funny to dress as Johnny Depp and Amber Heard,” she said in a post to Instagram. “I am deeply sorry and ashamed for putting something that awful out in the universe. Domestic abuse is never, ever funny. These are real issues with real people and I really regret my actions.”
Depp sued Heard for defamation in 2019 after accusing her of lying in a Washington Post article a year prior. Heard also counter-sued for defamation following comments made by Depp’s lawyer Adam Waldman.

The Olivier Award-winning West End revival of Cabaret is coming to Broadway: Producers announced that the acclaimed musical will begin previews at the August Wilson Theater in spring 2024.
Not confirmed: Whether the West End production’s original 2021 stars Eddie Redmayne (as the Emcee) or Jessie Buckley (as Sally Bowles) will make the move. Redmayne’s participation, in particular, has been widely speculated, prompted in part by his participation in this year’s Tony Awards tribute to Cabaret composer John Kander and actor Joel Grey, who played the Emcee in the original Broadway production as well as the 1972 movie version.
The West End revival – officially titled Cabaret At The Kit Kat Club – swept the 2022 Olivier Awards with seven wins including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor and Actress in a Musical (Redmayne and Buckley), and Best Director (Rebecca Frecknall). Supporting Actor and Actress in a Musical awards went to Elliot Levey and Liza Sadovy.

Brace yourself for a broken record.
How can this show keep getting better and better when it's so good already? On Schmigadoon! Season 2 Episode 5, the hits start right off the bat, and they just keep coming.
Everyone on screen and behind the scenes is a master of their craft. It's that simple, folks!
Tituss Burgess gives us a sinister Sweeney-esque recap of where we're at with our various plotlines, and even though he's fantastic here, it can't compare to his big number that comes a little later in the episode.
Melissa has truly come into her own, and Cecily Strong is there right along with her.
Dropping the Funny Girl costume (and schtick), Strong goes full-on torch singer with "My Turn Now," an homage to the magnificent "Maybe This Time" from Cabaret.
Vocally, she's never sounded better, which a strong belt and confident mixed voice that soars. No wonder the audience loves her!

“You can never return to Schmigadoon,” rasps Tituss Burgess in a new “Schmigadoon!” Season 2 trailer. “Welcome to Schmicago!” The new “first look” trailer from Apple TV+ then drops viewers into a darker, sexier musical pastiche than the candy-coated first season. Watch the full video above and then read on to dive into the smorgasbord of Broadway references hidden in this exciting sneak peek.
“As the high of Schmigadoon starts to wear off, the realities of life start to set in,” reveals Cecily Strong during a behind-the-scenes interview. It seems that the spark of romance her character Melissa experienced with Josh (Keegan-Michael Key) has begun to dissipate after leaving the world of Golden Age musicals. Josh has the idea to return to Schmigadoon in order to reignite their romance and sense of fun, but the couple is instead transported to a town inspired by musicals from the 1960s and 70s.

Self Reliance follows the story of Tommy (Jake Johnson) who enters a contest to win a million dollars if he can evade bounty hunters. He learns a loophole where the hunters can only kill him if he is alone so he tries to get his friends and family to never leave his side. Anna Kendrick and Andy Samberg also star in the film.
In an exclusive interview with uInterview at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, Emily Hampshire discussed the likelihood of her winning a death game like in the movie.
“Oh, maybe I would lose because the whole crux of it is you can’t be alone and I like to be alone a lot,” she said. “I like small spaces and being alone, so yeah. I also kind of would be like – $1 million today after you get taxes and all that stuff, I don’t know that it’s worth it.

Comedy darling Schitt's Creek wrapped up its final season last week, leaving me - and many others - in tearful disarray. The writers let us know what was next for each of the Roses over the course of the final season so that the last episode could simply be a moment of closure. David's wedding starting as a disaster was a thematic parallel to the entire series: a family that sticks together can get through any crisis - and that family includes the endlessly supportive Schitt's Creek community. The show was a testament to perseverance, which feels very timely right now.
The first time I heard of Schitt's Creek was actually through a former therapist. She thought it would be a great show to escape into, and she was right. At first, I connected with how distant it felt from my own life, but as the show went on, I...

Dane Cook is heading to NBC to headline his own network comedy series. Amid interest from multiple networks, the actor/comedian has signed a development deal with NBC for a half-hour project targeted for next fall. Cook will star in the comedy and will produce through his SUperFInger Entertainment banner. Cook is the second top standup comedian with cable TV roots to develop and star in a comedy for NBC eyed for next season, along with Sarah Silverman. Cook most recently guest starred on the FX comedy Louie last month in a much talked about episode where he and series star Louis Ck put to rest the so-called joke stealing controversy. While he has largely stayed away from broadcast TV until now, Cook’s very first screen credit was a recurring role on the short-lived ABC comedy series Maybe This Time some 15 years ago. Cook has a very successful standup...

Jordana Spiro, who plays the likable, looking-for-love P.J. Franklin on the TBS television series “My Boys,” never thought of herself as a comedic actor. “I always pictured myself in dramatic film roles, which is funny because I do a lot of comedy now,” says Spiro. She certainly does. Besides her leading sitcom role in which she holds her own against male comedy vets such as Jim Gaffigan, she had a hilarious scene-stealing part in the film “Must Love Dogs,” played opposite funny guys Jeremy Piven and Ed Helms in “The Goods: Live Hard, Sell Hard,” and recently shot the romantic-comedy pilot “Love Bites,” which was picked up by NBC.For Spiro, who grew up in Manhattan, there wasn't one defining moment where she knew she wanted to be an actor; it all happened naturally. “I was the kid who would be staging plays in the living room using the...

Glee makes a very early leap to DVD today, cranking out its first release before it even finishes the season. The "Road to Sectionals" package has the first 13 episodes, plus special features like director commentary and audition reels, yada yada. I have resigned myself to the fact that Glee won't be back until April, but I need more than DVD bonus features to carry me through. What's a Gleek gotta do to get some webisodes between now and then? (The show didn't immediately respond to our queries about possible webisode plans.) If there were ever a show whose fans slavishly...

I have to admit that from the first time I saw Glee, I loved Lea Michele. The character of Rachel Berry, that "determined to be a star and I don't care who knows it" attitude appealed to me. I recognized that feeling, too, because I remember watching Barbra Streisand in Funny Girl in the movies and having the same feeling of identification. When Streisand finished singing "I'm the Greatest Star" as Fanny Brice, I was convinced. Well, Lea feels it, too. She's a major Streisand fan and she loved singing a Barbra song on Glee.
Every time Lea Michele has had a chance to go diva -- like "Maybe This Time" and "Defying Gravity" -- she's displayed that Streisandesque musical power.
So when the winter finale had the New Directions show choir at sectionals and Rachel stepped up to sing "Don't Rain on My Parade," I was on the edge of my seat.

Tobey Maguire denied he was to slip on the furry feet earlier this week. But Bilbo Baggins aside, which other characters need shoehorning into Peter Jackson and Guillermo del Toro's film? And who should play them?
Just about every diminutive actor in Hollywood (and beyond) has been mentioned in connection with the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo Del Toro and Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit. Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe was the first to rule himself out of the running - and thank goodness. This week Spider-Man's Tobey Maguire has made it clear he's not been approached for the role, despite persistent rumours.
"I have not met with del Toro. We don't have any near future plans," Maguire told the Hollywood Reporter. "I don't know if something got misconstrued or miscommunicated but the source was not accurate at all.

A spirited actress, who dead from a head injury on 18 March at the age of 45, remembered by the actor who was her long-term friend
Natasha Richardson was her own unique life force. She possessed a high-wire vitality that took you in its arms, shook you, seduced you and cajoled you into living life without regrets. Friendship was an anchor for her. She thrived on bringing friends together. She created occasions full of affection and joy, moments of celebration that sometimes felt like a magical dance. She mixed lethal cocktails (she loved lychee martinis), cooked extraordinary food, was a spontaneously good nurse, laughed and delighted in stories and anecdotes, and had a mischievous ear for a good scandal. She loved to play music and would impatiently search her iPod for exactly the right track for the moment. And she loved to dance. And she loved to watch a movie with friends.

Well ABC seemed to be out in the lead for having the most shows we were thankful for in 2009 with 4 of their new shows making our list. In second place was the USA channel with 2, while Syfy, Fox, HBO and NBC all had 1 on the list as well. I was surprised that CBS didn’t make our list but with so many already good shows previous to 2009 they didn’t have to add a lot to their programming schedule. Glee got our top spot while Flashforward barely made the list.

New Moon: Introducing Team Jacob
For fans, the Twilight saga has become a sort of sporting event pitting one team against another. Team Edward was crazed upon the release of last year’s Twilight, and while New Moon is definitely geared toward “the other team,” there is more than adequate sexual tension and angst to satisfy both.
New Moon, the second movie/book in the series, centers on what happens when Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) leaves Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) after an event with his family threatens her safety. While the character tells Bella “You will never see me again,” Edward appears frequently through out the movie as a sort of ghostly consciousness trying to keep her from harm. Of course when she makes this connection, Bella goes looking for harm in order to see him.
While on her adrenalin search Bella rekindles an old friendship with Jacob Black...

Since Viral Loop hit bookstores a month ago, I've chronicled the Viral Loop Facebook application that was designed to spread and accompany the iPhone app to promote the book, my social Web marketing plan, explained why publishers don't market authors, and why book reviews don't matter anymore. But one question that readers always ask is how do you get a book deal in the first place?
Assuming you have an idea that a reader would plunk down $25 to read about, the first step (after you get an agent; I'll address that in a future Viral Loop Chronicle) is to craft a non-fiction book proposal--the more detailed the better. And I'm going to show you how to do that, but first: What kind of book should you write?
You have far greater odds of success writing non-fiction than fiction. According to veteran author June Cotner, 85% of the 55,000 new titles released annually are in non-fiction,...

This sickly sweet romp through yet another American high school comes up trumps on its dazzling musical numbers
I am full of glee. Is this a good thing? This week, the New York Times ran a story on how an hour-long comedy on the Fox TV network "has become a cult favourite among the theatre community in New York." Most days, I like to imagine myself as part of that community, so this morning I settled in to watch all nine episodes of Glee. The aggregate effect of this is like gorging on fistfuls of marshmallows or Turkish delight: sweet, sickly and not entirely satisfying.
Set in the brutish environs of a midwestern American high school, Glee centres on the jocks, cheerleaders and musical-theatre geeks who constitute the Glee Club, an extracurricular society devoted to singing popular songs. Glee (TV) fans now have something else to be gleeful about: not only is the show going great and already picked up for a full season, but Glee: The Music, Volume 1 is out now, and in 17 songs spread across a full hour it captures everything that's fun and offbeat and daring about the hit Fox ensemble show that follows the highs, lows, loves, and trials and tribulations of a high school glee club (and those affected by it, including faculty members, the cheerleading squad, and the football team). On the show, the pop hits and show tunes are usually employed to express a particular character's feelings -- or those of the group collectively -- at a given moment, but the numbers also, for the most part, hold up on their own, separate from the series. Fans know that the songs are as ecclectic as the characters. Other than a...

MattCanada here with another week of homo classics. Since I started writing this weekly column about a month ago, I have focused on films which have not been Oscar contenders and not featured the actresses which Nathaniel, me, and all the readers of this website respect (read: worship in a cult-like fashion). So on to Cabaret!
Liza Minnelli's Oscar winning role as Sally Bowles may well be the gayest Oscar win of all time. Now I am not a big Liza fan, actually I actively dislike her in anything else, but in Cabaret she gives one of the most amazing performances in the history of cinema in the greatest movie musical of all time. Not to be hyperbolic or anything, but Liza's Sally and Cabaret are earth shatteringly good. Liza is hardly the only reason to love Cabaret. We have even More Glee news to deliver, PopWatchers: Emmy winner Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies) will reprise her role as the boozy glee alum April Rhodes for at least one episode in 2010. (Listen to her sing "Maybe This Time" in the window below.) Plus, Glee has gotten the stamp of approval of one of Hollywood's biggest stars: Julia Roberts. Co-creator Ryan Murphy, who is currently filming Eat, Pray, Love with Roberts in Bali, tells EW, "We’re on location here and she’s watched episodes and has quite enjoyed them." I could totally see Roberts being a major Gleek. And finally,...

If you caught this week’s episode of Glee, you understand why I am about to yell. If you didn’t well, you will soon. Hey, Hollywood, hire Kristin Chenoweth Now!
Whew, glad I got that off of my chest. But, honestly, I do not understand why Kristin isn’t gainfully employed right now. The tiny powerhouse never fails to entertain and amaze. If you saw her Emmy acceptance speech and your heart didn’t melt, well, check for a pulse. Plus she made it abundantly clear in her Emmy speech that she was 1) unemployed and 2) would like to work on Mad Men, The Office or 24. Wake up, people. Don’t make her beg.
Well, if there is any television justice her performance this week on Glee will finally make the phones ring. As washed-up, boozed-up former Glee Club star April Rhodes, Kristin was magnificent. Sublime. Heartbreaking. But don’t...

I think last night may have been the best serving of Glee yet! We not only had fantastic guest appearances by recent Emmy-winner Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies) but also four friggin' fantastic musical numbers. We'll return to a standard recap next week, but today we thought it would be more fun to embed all four of "The Rhodes Not Taken"'s performances so Gleeks (a.k.a. we) could have one spot to watch all the greatness. Personally, nothing for me can compete with "Somebody to Love." That brought down the house and gave me chills. But I'm also kinda...

Quinn is still pregnant, and her morning sickness is getting in the way of rehearsal; she's a poor replacement for Rachel. Terri is still not pregnant, but eating for more than 2. Will spilled the beans on Finn and Quinn’s issues to Emma, who tries her best to help Finn by encouraging him to get Rachel back and increase his chances of getting a music scholarship, since football seems less likely.
Rachel was serious about leaving, and Glee continues with her. She’s definitely missed. Or, rather, her phenomenal voice is. Finn puts the charm on Rachel by taking the non-obvious route of suggesting they run lines together for the play. He feels dirty for it; deceit doesn’t seem to suit him. Rachel, meanwhile, is starting to cave under horrible pressure from Sandy, who’s determined to chase her out of the play and take the lead for himself.

Glee is one of the new shows this season that seems to keep turning heads on a consistent basis. The fact that it’s a musical show, and still able to incorporate comedy, romance, and a bit of an After School Special feel to it while still remaining popular each week in very impressive.
Tonight’s episode is entitled “The Rhodes Not Taken” in which special guest star Kristin Chenoweth plays April Rhodes, an old classmate of Will’s. Kristen is known on Broadway for her work in such performances as Wicked, and known in the TV community for her supporting role on ABC’s Pushing Daisies.
The show’s music has been doing exponentially better each week in sales. From a Fox Press release:
Columbia Records and Twentieth Century Fox Television today released select songs featured in this week’s episode of Glee, including show-stopping versions of “Maybe This Time...

The family of actress Natasha Richardson (The White Countess) officially released the news earlier today. She was declared dead today at the age of 45. What seemed like a minor skiing accident on a practice trail in Quebec (she reportedly walked away from the fall, laughing) quickly morphed into a life ending tragedy. Head trauma and brain injuries are mysterious things and difficult to predict (here's an article with a neurologist theorizing on the matter).
This is a loss to everyone who enjoyed her work and of course especially tragic for her family, one of the most important film and stage families of the past century. Natasha's father, Oscar winning director Tony Richardson (Tom Jones) passed away in 1991 but her mother, the legendary Vanessa Redgrave is still vital and working. Natasha performed with Vanessa just two months ago here in New York City as mother in daughter in Stephen Sondheim's classic A Little Night Music.

Natasha Richardson leaves behind a legacy of performances from film and television dating back a quarter of a century. However, it was on the stage that this star truly shone. And Broadway will pay the ultimate tribute to Richardson tonight when the lights of all the theaters along the rialto are dimmed for one minute at curtain time.
For her 1986 stage debut opposite her mother, Vanessa Redgrave, in Chekov 's "The Seagull," Natasha Richardson won the London Drama Critics' Circle award as most promising newcomer at age 23. And for her 1993 Broadway debut in the third rialto revival of Eugene O'Neill's "Anna Christie," she won the equivalent award from Theatre World.
Natasha Richardson was the first actress to be nominated for a Drama Desk award for playing that title role. She lost that race to Jane Alexander for "The Sisters Rosensweig." And like Liv Ullmann, star of the second revival of...
