- The world is a bleak desolate place where the people live in elevated cities. As the ground is uninhabitable, the citizens spend most of their lives wasting their time in virtual reality. Carver is a dream-breaker whose job is to enter the world of VR and fix what is wrong. And what is wrong is that his gal pal Dinah has been murdered in VR which should not be possible. But Carver soon finds that Dinah has constructed a transducer which allows people to enter VR without other equipment, but creates a rift. That rift causes people to enter VR, but also allows the creatures from the game to enter the real world.—Tony Fontana <tony.fontana@spacebbs.com>
- Carver is a Dream Breaker, a VR troubleshooter for DreamCore, which controls what little is left of the human race after an environmental apocalypse. Dinah, a senior researcher for DreamCore and a close friend of Carver, is mysteriously killed during the final stages of playing a game she created, the Afterlife game, a Doom-like game that is the most popular VR program of all. Carver discovers that Dinah has completed the Trancender, a device that bridges between the VR world and the Real world. Unfortunately, it has the side effect of letting Afterlife characters into the Real world. As the mystery unfolds, there is disagreement on how to use the Trancender to save the human race: create VR plants and workers to restore the bioshpere, or simply evacuate everyone into VR. This disagreement causes Carver's father to unwittingly unleash the most dangerous demon in the afterlife game: The Angel. Carver must lead a team into VR with the help of Dinah's trapped soul to find and destroy the Angel before she wipes out what's left of humanity.—Craig West
