- Henry Marshall is sitting at a bar, having drinks and smoking. He has been in prison for 5 years, and he aims to get revenge on the boss who convinced him to do the time, and then forgot about him. A mysterious Woman buys him a drink and he buys her one, she says there's a christmas party she was going to go to, then asks him to stay. He refuses and she decides to go with him. At the Christmas party as the elevator opens he spots his boss Evans, and fires. She pulls at him and he ends up shooting three people instead of Evans. An off-duty security guard shoots him twice and the doors close again.
He looks at the Woman and she just smiles and vanishes. In a panic, he escapes, stealing a car and heading out of the city. He calls the office and asks how many people he killed. The detective tells him three people are dead, Henry hangs up and keeps driving. The detective is shown the id's of the dead, all of them supposedly "resident aliens" with fake names.
Henry runs out of gas, he ditches the car and throws the gun into an icy lake. He heads on foot and eventually discovers a small tavern.
Once inside he orders some soup and a drink, he goes into the bathroom and covers his wound with a towel. Once back he realizes he has no money and tries to con the Woman promising to mail her the money. She says her family has never turned anyone away and says it's on the house. Henry sits down at table. Then her hears a voice say "don't you just hate eating alone?". Henry says no, but a kind looking Man sits opposite him anyway. He turns away, but the Man knows his name and asks him to sit down. Henry assumes he heard about him on the radio and wants to catch him or something.
The Man introduces himself as Lucas, he orders the soup and a drink for his friend Henry and takes out a large wad of cash tipping the nice lady he calls Mary a hundred. He says there's going to be a surprise party, and Mary is going to pick up the bar tab even though she can't afford it so he wanted to contribute. Henry finds that irritating and asks if he has anything for him, and Lucas offers intelligence, claiming to be an angel of some kind. A patrolmen comes in, Henry assumes Lucas has called him to cash in but he tells him to keep his head down, and the cop leaves.
Henry is revolted thinking Lucas was some kind of evangelical, and spits out that he knew dozens of lifers in prison who said similar things and how he thought it was delusional. He turns to leave but Lucas says if he does, the Police will spot him tomorrow and shoot him. Henry refuses to believe that he can know the future and Lucas says that it's not hard because whenever someone makes a move it changes the future, "drinking a bowl of green tea, I stopped the war".
Henry sits down and argues with Lucas. Lucas tries to explain quantum physics to him, about how because everyone and everything was born from the same matter we are all connected, but this just confuses Henry. He wants to leave, Lucas shakes his hand and he decides to go to the bathroom. He discovers his wound is gone! He is finally convinced, he wants Lucas to use his ability so they can get rich and Lucas claims that's not what life is all about, but Henry explains his philosophy of every Man for himself.
Again Henry wants to leave but Lucas says if he does he makes it to another city, but he has no identity, soon he is living on the street becomes an addict and contracts Hepatitis B from sharing a needle and dies two years later. Henry gives up now and begs Lucas for a way out.
Lucas simply asks him to answer a question, if he had it all to do over again, would he be different? Henry says he wouldn't be so greedy and would be faster so he wouldn't get caught. Lucas asks about all the people who were affected because Henry cheated them, and the people they effected because of it, Henry doesn't seem to care or realize what that means. He points to a little girl at the counter and says because of Henry, she won't go to College. Her Father and a friend invested money in his scam and he started drinking because of the loss. He accidently kills his daughter while driving drunk, all because of Henry. Henry doesn't want to believe it, but he knows it's true.
Henry goes to the bathroom again and when he comes back he sits and then the Man who is supposed to be surprised walks in and the party commences, Lucas says he has Friends and that's real wealth, where has playing by his rules gotten Henry? Henry see's that Lucas is hurt, that in fact he took Henry's injury for himself. He asks why he did all of this, Lucas says that he is teaching a lesson that when his actions help, or hurt others and they hurt "us" with Lucas pointing up.
Henry says it's too late those people are dead and he's doomed. Lucas says no it's not too late, those people were manufactured, fake, they were put there so Henry could be saved, a complicated way to teach a lesson. Henry goes to get a towel for the wound, in the bathroom he hears "police, freeze!". He looks out and they are arresting someone who looks like him! He looks in the mirror and he realizes that he and Lucas switched bodies, that Lucas has given him a second chance. He walks out, and he asks Mary if she knows the Man and his daughter who were there earlier. She says yes, and he asks her to give him this, handing her all the money.
As he leaves, he spots the mysterious Woman again but she just smiles and disappears. Lucas is seen in Henry's body in jail, and he gets a new inmate who is thrown in. He introduces himself and offers a hand.
