Of the many many TV shows over the years that were about TV shows, Garry Shandling didn't just co-create and star in the very best, he starred in two of the very best. Shandling, who died suddenly today at 66 (as first reported by TMZ), was not only co-creator (with Dennis Klein) and star of the trailblazing HBO comedy The Larry Sanders Show, about the narcissistic, self-loathing host of a late night network talk show, but earlier co-created (with Alan Zweibel) and starred in It's Garry Shandling's Show, an incredibly self-aware sitcom (originally airing on Showtime, and later rerun on Fox) where Sanders broke the fourth wall, went into the studio audience, and had a theme song so meta, it puts Abed on Community to shame: You can trace an entire generation of TV comedy to Larry Sanders. Not only did powerhouse writer/producers like Judd Apatow and Steve Levitan take early jobs there,...

With the news that Kate Winslet is very close to signing on to star in the film adaptation of Divergent (presumably, though nof officially, as cunning antagonist Jeanine Matthews), it’s only natural to start thinking about how else director Neil Burger (Limitless) should fill out the cast.
Veronica Roth’s 2011 Ya thriller often gets compared to The Hunger Games. And it’s true, both series feature brave, bad-ass heroines in a dystopian future and plenty of life-or-death action. Divergent’s Beatrice Prior, 16, must choose a faction to call home. Each faction is dedicated to virtues found within society: There...

You guys! Last night was the season finale of True Blood. I'm still kind of in disbelief that it's over, because it really feels like it was just getting started. How are we supposed to last until 20-fucking-13 after all those seriously intense cliff-hangers? But that being said, I really feel like this was the best episode of the season, and not only because of that make out scene. But now I'm getting ahead of myself.
We begin with the fairies putting their hands together to zap the shit out of Russell, who, in turn, only feels a very slight tickling sensation. So that's terrifying. If the fairies don't have their zapping powers, what do any of us have at all? Just as he appears to be about to erupt into an fit of orgasmic giggles, Eric appears! I'm such an Eric fan right now.

HBO Announces Premiere Dates For True Blood, The Newsroom
Don't look now, but the return of summer TV is upon us.
How do I know that? Well, aside from my convenient access to a calendar, it has a lot to do with HBO announcing the premiere date for the next season of True Blood. On June 10th at 9:00, we'll be thrown back into the wild world of Bon Temps, Louisiana, free of the witches from season four but still not out of the woods yet. The return of both Russell Edgington and (newly fanged) Steve Newlin is bound to cause problems for the vamps, with Tara's fate, Terry's past demons, and the new direction of the Avl to be delved into once the season kicks off. True Blood will air in front of the season finale of Veep (June 10th) and Girls (June 17th), respectively.

In its opening scene, Canadian dramedy Good Dog directly references Curb Your Enthusiasm. Its lead character, neurotic TV producer George (Ken Finkleman), is planning an unnecessary trip to Los Angeles to get Larry David’s blessing to use the title “Embrace Your Enthusiasm” for a planned fly-on-the-wall series about his life. It feels like a move intended to undercut criticism that Good Dog‘s a “Canadian Curb“, but one that doesn’t work. If anything, it just draws additionally attention to the fact this is a poor man’s version of the Emmy-winning Curb, and possible the worst comedy pilot I’ve seen in years.
It doesn’t help that I had no idea who Ken Finkleman was, and therefore no opinion of him to subvert. He’s an award-winning writer-producer-actor, who created and starred in a hit Canadian TV series called The Newsroom in the ’90s, amongst other things,...
