More than two decades ago, "Chicken Run" clucked its way onto the movie scene and became a runaway hit. The stop-motion animation movie was clever and strange, and unlike any of its contemporaries at the time (CGI-heavy flick "Dinosaur" and wacky Disney one-off "The Emperor's New Groove" bookended it at the year's box office). "Chicken Run" was also a surprisingly rich text, a movie that included plenty of moments of parody and humor meant to appeal to adults as well as kids.
The first movie functioned as a riff on "The Great Escape," the 1963 war film starring Steve McQueen, but the new sequel film, "Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget," chose a different parody path. In an interview with /Film, director Sam Fell confirmed that "Dawn of the Nugget" was influenced by heist films, so much so that it earned a pointed nickname during production. The revolting poultry of "Chicken Run" thought that their darkest days were behind them after escaping from Tweedy's Farm in Aardman Animation's daring stop-motion prison break, "Chicken Run." Between finding her dream home and becoming a mother, Ginger suddenly has a lot of reasons to be afraid. She and Rocky hatch an adorable chick, Molly, who inherits her parents' love of freedom and daredevil antics. Slamdance Film Festival has revealed the winners of its annual Sparky Awards, with “Waiting for the Light to Change” and “Where the Road Leads” taking home the narrative feature grand jury prize and audience award, respectively.
Directed by Linh Tran, narrative feature grand jury prize winner “Waiting for the Light to Change” is an “exceptional act of patience, restraint, courage and authenticity,” according to the jury. “Filmmaker Linh Tran paints a remarkably honest portrait of vulnerability that breaks open the heart of its audience, demanding sincerity and drawing deep reflection of the fractured nature of ourselves and the complex, human spaces between each of us.”
The Agbo Fellowship, which includes a 25,000 scholarship and mentorship from Slamdance alumni Joe and Anthony Russo, was awarded to Tij D’Oyen. He presented his narrative short film, “Lollygag,” during the festival.

This article contains light spoilers for The Many Saints of Newark.
The Sopranos prequel film, The Many Saints of Newark is David Chase’s return to the New Jersey city where his families lived, worked, and occasionally breathed their last. The film focuses on Christopher Moltisanti’s (Michael Imperioli) father Dickie Molitisanti (Alessandro Nivola), and his struggle with doing the right thing against things that have to be done right. He is very supportive of the film’s most important supporting role. Michael Gandolfini, the 22-year-old son of James Gandolfini, plays a young Tony Soprano.
While the film doesn’t explore Christopher’s claim that his father, Tony’s hero, was a junkie, it does fill in many of the plot points which lead to events in the series. But not all. Not even close. The young Tony Soprano is only a pinky swear away from living a legitimate life,...

Marvel’s “Captain Marvel” opened to Thursday-preview grosses of $20.7 million. That’s only slightly below last year’s “Black Panther,” which opened one hour later. For co-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, that figure nearly doubles the total gross of the four indies they made before Marvel came calling..
This is a film that has even rival studios rooting for its success. Something has to stop the box-office slide of 2019; movie ticket sales are down are a catastrophic 30 percent so far. One reason for the falloff is by this time last year we had “Black Panther,” 2018’s biggest domestic grosser (and second largest opener to Marvel’s “Avengers: Infinity War”).
Whatever your feelings on the comic-book takeover of Hollywood, their success is vital for the struggling theater business. And as Marvel maintains its dominance In that world, they look to indie filmmakers to guide them.

The feature film prequel to the TV series The Sopranos, The Many Saints of Newark, has finally found its director in Alan Taylor.
Terminator Genisys’s Taylor is no stranger to the murky underworld of the TV show. Having already directed a number of episodes on the series, he also won an Emmy for sixth season episode Kennedy and Heidi in 2007.
The script, which is written by Chase and Lawrence Konner is said to be set during the Newark riots in the ’60s when racial tensions between the Italian and African American communities were at boiling point. It is also thought that a number of the original cast members from the show are set to return for the feature.

I’ve loved comic shops ever since I rode my bike past Kim’s Collectible Comics and Records in the mid-70s. Kim Draheim, the owner, was one day away from opening the store. He told me to come back the next day. I did and I am proud to say I was his very first customer.
I get that same thrill every time I visit a new comic shop. I’ve been to quite a few since then. I am always impressed the way each one seems to be on the bleeding edge of Geek Culture, combining entrepreneurial courage with personal passion.
So I was so eager to start reading Comic Shop: The Retail Mavericks Who Gave Us a New Geek Culture. There’s a lot of great stuff in this book, and I wanted to learn more. I reached out to Dan Gearino, the author and he had a lot to say.

Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor seems to suggest that the Doctor Strange movie is on its way from Marvel...
A week or two back, we had the pleasure of talking to Alan Taylor, the director of films such as Palookaville and Thor: The Dark World. The latter has now crossed $100m at the global box office ahead of its Us release later this week, and Taylor has given another candid interview to The Telegraph to mark the movie's release.
It's an interesting read, and the bit in particular that has made many people's ears prick up comes at the end, when he's asked if there are any more Marvel characters he'd be interested in tackling.
"I do like the weirder ones", he admitted. "What’s cool about them is they can now start exploring the weirder ones because they had so much success with the mainstream ones.

Updated & Exclusive: Beta closes a number of key deals on Venice award-winner Still Life.
Still Life director Uberto Pasolini has several new projects on the boil as a producer through his company Redwave. One is a UK/French comedy that is being co-scripted by Simon Nye and that he will make with Rita Dagher’s Senorita Films. Another is a British comedy written by comedian Deborah Frances-White. Meanwhile, he is still working with director Alan Taylor (Palookaville, Thor) on The Horseman, a western adapted from David Anthony Durham’s civil war set novel, Gabriel’s Story.
He is also hatching a version of The Odyssey from a script by Edward Bond. (Pasolini nearly made the project a decade ago with Neil Jordan and is re-firing it now.)
Meanwhile, Beta has sold Still Life to Bim for Italy, Wild Bunch for Benelux, Palace in Australia, Filmcoopi in Switzerland, Arthaus in Norway, Folkets Bio in Sweden...

A few months back, it was announced that the upcoming Terminator sequel, with a tentative shoot date of January, would in fact be a reboot, the first in a standalone trilogy. Not much is known about the plot at this stage, other than Arnold Schwarzenegger will again be appearing, but the movie is moving forward, with Thor: The Dark World director Alan Taylor in talks to helm. Best known for directing several episodes of Game of Thrones (most notably, the last two of season one and first two of season two), the Thor sequel is(set for release in October) his first blockbuster feature, mostly working on dramas like Palookaville and The Emperor's New Clothes pre GoT, and obviously something about it impressed Paramount enough to offer him the keys to the classic franchise. Terminator is set for release June 26th 2015. via Variety...

Alan Taylor has officially claimed the iron throne. The "Game of Thrones" director, whose big-budget Marvel project "Thor: The Dark World" opens this fall (the footage we saw at D23 was officially "quite good"), has been named the director of the next "Terminator" film from Annapurna Pictures and Paramount. The next entry in the time traveling cyborgs franchise is scheduled to be released in the summer of 2015, along with every other huge movie ever. Taylor is one of those directors who has seen it all: after directing small scale character dramas like "Palookaville" and the Ian Holm-as-Napoleon movie "The Emperor's New Clothes," he transitioned to television, where he got a steady gig directing for prestigious pay cable channel HBO, helming episodes of "Sex and the City," "The Sopranos," "Six Feet Under," "Carnivale," "Deadwood," "Rome," "Big Love," "Boardwalk Empire" and, most memorably, the first two seasons of "Game of Thrones,...

Fox’s upcoming drama Mob Doctor has done less than move the earth down here at the Criminal Complex offices. Jordana Spiro will play Dr. Grace Devlin, whose brother gets himself in deep with the Chicago mob, and so she must provide off-the-record medical services to the organized crime family members. It’s not a bad premise, but there’s been very little there to really attract our attention. Spiro, while easy on the eyes, has done nothing that any of us have ever paid any attention to, the closest being the TBS sitcom My Boys, which I fully intended to watch because Jim Gaffigan had a big role, but I still never did. So even though she’s shown up on stuff like Dexter and Harry’s Law, Spiro remains an unknown variable. And a medical drama, even one with a big crime angle, is still a medical drama.

Like it or not, filmmaking is undeniably a director's medium. It wasn't always like that, of course: it was only the coming of the auteur theory in the 1950s and 1960s that popularized the idea of the director as the person responsible for all that was great and terrible about a picture. And while anyone who's worked in film knows that it's a collaborative medium, there's still no better way of seeing where the form might be going in the next few years than by looking at the directors who've been making splashes of late.
So, hot on the heels of our On The Rise pieces focusing on actors, actresses and screenwriters, we've picked out ten directors who've arrived in a big way in the last year or so, and look set for even greater things in the near future. Any tips of your own? Let us know in the comments section below.

So far, for all the sequel mania that's swept Hollywood, the films of Martin Scorsese remain untouched. Sure, you could perhaps argue that "Casino" is a follow-up to "Goodfellas," in spirit rather than in content, but we've so far been spared "Cape Fear 2: Max Takes Manhattan," "Kundun 2: The Quickening" or "New York New York: Tokyo Drift," either from the director himself or from lesser helmers, even as we get follow-ups to everything from "Tron" to "Road House."
But it looks as though our unbroken run is over, and someone's had the giant balls to sequelize perhaps Scorsese's greatest movie, no less. Moviehole report that casting is currently underway on "Raging Bull II," a follow-up to the director's biopic of boxer Jake Lamotta. Based on the book of the same name by Lamotta, Chris Anderson and Sharon McGehee, which examines both the early life and the events after those told in the Scorsese picture,...

Despite the fact that many considered the Marvel Comics character Thor to be virtually impossible to sell to a mass audience — long-haired Norse god in pseudo-Superman costume defies his father and flirts with a mortal woman — the Kenneth Branagh-directed Thor movie adaptation was a huge hit for Marvel Studios, raking in $449 million worldwide to become the #8 movie of 2011, the #1 comic-based movie of 2011, and the second biggest superhero in Marvel's stable, beating up out both Captain America and the Hulk (which should tick off some comic book fans who feel the "Hulk is strongest one there is!").
With all of that success, you would think it would be pretty easy to head into production on the sequel, the tentatively titled Thor 2, but the project has hit one road block after another. Marvel Studios hasn't had the easiest time retaining a director for its upcoming sequel Thor 2. First, Thor director Kenneth Branagh left the project in a "mutual and amicable" exit, and then Branagh's replacement, Patty Jenkins (Monster) exited the sequel over "creative differences" last month. Alan Taylor (Palookaville) was hired to direct just days after Jenkins' departure, and, it would seem, in time to salvage Thor 2's 2013 release date.

I'm guessing it was a pretty merry Christmas for director Alan Taylor, who Marvel officially named as the new director of Thor 2 just prior to the holidays. We reported last week that he was one of two names they were considering to replace Patty Jenkins, the other being Daniel Minahan. Both have most recently worked on HBO's Game of Thrones, which seems to have been the main draw for Marvel, although Taylor's credits also include the 1995 crime comedy Palookaville starring William Forsythe and Vincent Gallo. So, did they make the right choice? I'm not sure that there is a huge difference between Taylor and Minahan since both of them are mostly known for their television work, but the important thing from Marvel's point of view is that the movie's November 15th, 2013 release date will remain intact. After the recent rumours that Patty Jenkins was actually fired from Thor 2,...

Remember when Patty Jenkins stepped down as the director of Thor 2? Well now Marvel Studios has moved quickly to find a replacement. They have turned to another Game of Thrones director and his name is Alan Taylor. Other than the hit HBO series he has one directorial feature under his belt with Palookaville. He has also helmed some of the best episodes of Mad Men, Nurse Jackie, and Boardwalk Empire.
Thor 2 is now back on the fast track, and will still meet its November 15th, 2013 release date. Chris Hemsworth is returning to reprise his role as the hammer-wielding Norse god.
Thor 2 comes to theaters November 15th, 2013 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston. The film is directed by Alan Taylor.

Looks like the offices of Marvel didn't close for Christmas. After flirting with "Game Of Thrones" director Brian Kirk and "Monster" helmer Patty Jenkins, a new director for "Thor 2" has been found. For now. Deadline shook off their egg nog hangover to report that Alan Taylor is the latest to land the gig directing the sequel to the hit comic book movie. Like his predecessors, Taylor likely comes cheap, will follow orders, and doesn't seem immediately suited to the job, being the man behind films like the indie "Palookaville" and "The Emperor's New Clothes." But he's done a brace of television work, including "Game Of Thrones," a program that Marvel execs seemed obsessed with. This means a lump of coal for Daniel Minahan, also contending to direct the movie, and who not coincidentally is also behind epsiodes "Game Of Thrones." No word yet on how Natalie Portman feels about all this.

Marvel's sequel to "Thor" has found a new director in the land of Westeros.
Alan Taylor, who directed the final two episodes of "Game of Thrones'" first season for HBO, has been hired to helm "Thor 2," Deadline reports. He replaces Patty Jenkins, who parted ways with Marvel earlier this month.
Taylor has only a couple of feature films to his credit -- most notably the 1995 indie "Palookaville" -- but he's a prolific TV director. He's been a go-to guy for HBO, directing episodes of "The Sopranos," "Deadwood," "Sex and the City," "Bored to Death" and "Boardwalk Empire." His other credits include the pilot and several other episodes of "Mad Men" and multiple episodes of "Homicide."
"Thor 2" is currently scheduled for release in November 2013, and you'll see Chris Hemsworth as the Norse god in "The Avengers" next May.

After losing Patty Jenkins (read the whole sordid details here), Marvel Studios didn’t waste a whole lot of time finding a replacement. The studio has now tapped Alan Taylor to direct their upcoming sequel. Taylor is known as mostly a TV director, with credits on “Game of Thrones”, “Boardwalk Empire”, “Deadwood”, and “Six Feet Under”. Basically, dude likes directing paid cable shows. He also has a couple of feature films to his credit, the 1995 crime comedy “Palookaville” and 2003′s “Kill the Poor”. Yes, not exactly the type of resume that would make one a good match for a comic book movie, but then again, neither was Kenneth Branagh, and that worked out. “Thor 2″ has already been scheduled for a November 15, 2013 release date, with Chris Hemsworth back as the titular superhero. Natalie Portman, if she’s not still too miffed about losing Jenkins as a potential director, would also be back as Jane Foster,...

After hiring Monster director Patty Jenkins and then embarrassingly letting her go, Marvel has finally settled on a director for Thor 2, and hopefully for good this time. According to Deadline Alan Taylor has gotten the job, charged with directing the sequel set for a November 15 release date next year, with the entire original cast slated to return. Taylor was one of two names on a rumored shortlist to replace Jenkins, thanks to his work directing episodes of Game of Thrones most recently but also a career that includes TV work on Sex and the City and Deadwood, and features like Palookaville and Kill the Poor. This is by far the director's biggest gig, which fits with the strategy Marvel has employed for years of hiring low-profile or otherwise cheap directors to kick off their superhero franchises. Jon Favreau was the actor-turned-director behind Elf when Marvel hired him to make Iron...

Exclusive: Marvel Studios has found its Thor 2 director. I’m told that Marvel has set Alan Taylor, who was widely rumored to be on the short list to replace Patty Jenkins. Taylor is an accomplished TV director whose recent credits include Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and Nurse Jackie, and he directed the feature Palookaville. Jenkins got the job but then fell out over differences with Marvel on the sequel. This will put the film back on track to meet its November 15, 2013 release date. The sequel brings back Chris Hemsworth as the hammer-wielding superhero, from a script by Thor co-writer Don Payne. The Kenneth Branagh-directed original grossed $448 million worldwide and launched the star of Hemsworth, who reprised Thor in The Avengers and then played the latter title role opposite Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman for Universal. Taylor is repped by UTA.

After losing director Patty Jenkins earlier this month over creative differences, Marvel Studios have decided upon a replacement for their sequel Thor 2 , and according to Deadine , it's Alan Taylor, the director who has mainly been helming television shows for HBO like "Game of Thrones," "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Sopranos" (for which he won an Emmy) with a resumé that goes back to "Oz." His last feature was 2003's Kill the Poor and he directed Palookaville in 1995. With a director accustomed to working fast, the film is back on track for its November 15, 2013 release date, working from the script co-written by Don Payne. (Photo Credit: Adriana M. After firing director Patty Jenkins Dec. 6, Marvel Studios remained committed to hiring replacements in order to keep its franchise sequel Thor 2 on schedule for its November 2013 release date. Jenkins’ abrupt firing generated more controversy today with The Hollywood Reporter confirming Portman’s anger at the studio for dismissing Jenkins despite the star actress’ efforts at getting her hired as the first female director to helm a Marvel Studios movie. Portman remained under contract to return for Thor 2 but she continued to be unhappy with Marvel Studios. Meanwhile, Alan Taylor, who directed the 1996 indie caper movie Palookaville as well as episodes of Mad Men, Game of Thrones and Boardwalk Empire; and Daniel Minahan, who directed episodes of True Blood, Game of Thrones and Deadwood, continued talks to replace Jenkins with Portman reportedly joining in the discussions.

We still don't have anything official to report with regards to Marvel's search for a new director for Thor 2, but sources say that they are quickly closing in on a replacement for Patty Jenkins. Jenkins left the project last week due to creative differences, putting the pressure on Marvel to find someone else in a hurry. Now Heat Vision is reporting that Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan are the two candidates they are currently pursuing, with the common theme being that they have both worked on HBO's Game of Thrones. Marvel is also in the process of hiring another screenwriter to write a new draft of the script with John Collee (Master and Commander: Far Side of the World), Robert Rodat (Saving Private Ryan), and Roger Avary (Beowulf) being the current frontrunners. As we reported previously, Brian Kirk was the first person that Marvel had in mind to direct Thor...

It sounds like we were pretty on the ball when we guessed that a TV director would be brought in to replace Patty Jenkins after she departed "Thor 2" last week. A new report is saying that two "Game of Thrones" graduates are in contention for the position, though a reporter for Variety teases that one is a likelier candidate than the other.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan are the two leading candidates for the "Thor 2" gig. Taylor directed the feature "Palookaville" as well as episodes of "Boardwalk Empire," "The Sopranos," "Game of Thrones," "Mad Men" and "Playboy Club." Minahan directed the respected 2001 feature "Series 7: The Contenders" as well as episodes of "True Blood," "Game of Thrones," "Deadwood" and "Grey's Anatomy."
But Variety's Jeff Sneider doesn't think Minahan has as good a shot for the job. "Don't believe everything you read. If I were a betting man,...

That didn't take long. Less than a week after Patty Jenkins exited as director of "Thor 2," Marvel Studios is getting the superhero sequel According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel is turning to the small screen for a new director. Both Alan Taylor (who's directed key episodes of "Game of Thrones," "Boardwalk Empire" and "The Sopranos") and Daniel Minahan ("True Blood," "Deadwood," "Grey’s Anatomy") are being considered for the gig. Both have limited feature film experience. Taylor directed a handful of features, including the 1995 crime comedy "Palookaville" with William Forsythe, Vincent Gallo and Frances McDormand, while Minahan helmed the...

Thor was the biggest superhero movie of the year and grossed nearly half a billion dollars but Marvel are insistent on not breaking the bank for the sequel and are desperate to make sure the money they do spend all ends up on the screen. Sometime after Iron Man, Marvel got the impression that it was the universe and the characters that were their films biggest selling points and not the actors portraying them who can be interchangeable (see Don Cheadle replacing Terrence Howard in Iron Man 2 or Mark Ruffalo replacing Edward Norton as The Hulk in The Avengers) and they are now refusing to pay big money on A* talent. It’s a bold move and one that hopefully won’t come and bite them in the ass.

Marvel’s search for a Thor 2 director isn’t going as originally planned. Patty Jenkins was on tap to direct the sequel to the summer blockbuster, but left the project citing the generic “creative differences” bit as the reason why she is departing from directing Thor 2. The latest events have left Marvel scrambling to find someone to direct the movie before its November 15, 2013 release date.
According to THR, Marvel head to familiar ground but is coming back with some very unfamiliar names. The trade reports that Game of Thrones’ helmers Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan are in the running to direct Thor 2. Marvel’s first choice for director was Brian Kirk, who also has Game of Thrones experience.
Some of Taylor’s credits include 1996’s Palookaville, but he has become a huge cable TV helmer, directing episodes of HBO’s Game of Thrones, Boardwalk Empire and The Sopranos...

The most unexpected news this week was that Thor 2 director Patty Jenkins had walked away from the film [1] over 'creative differences,' leaving the Marvel Studios sequel in a pinch. The film isn't set for release [2] until November 15, 2013, but as an effects-heavy project that the studio also wants to rewrite, this turmoil in the creative staff doesn't bode well. Now a new report says that Marvel is looking at two directors, neither of whom will be names recognized by all. Alan Taylor and Daniel Minahan are the two leading candidates. Both have a lot of TV experience, and both are Game of Thrones veterans, just like the first [3] Thor 2 director, Brian Kirk. THR [4] says that Marvel was just hiring a new writer when Patty Jenkins left, so the company is in the position of choosing a couple of significant new creative team members. The current possible writers are John Collee (Happy Feet,...

New York -- Andy Fleming will helm adoption comedy "The Land of Enchantment" and Bruce Beresford will direct South African post-apartheid drama "The House Gun" for Lucky Monkey Pictures, an emerging indie banner that's ramping up its slate.
"Enchantment," set and shot in Santa Fe -- the title refers to New Mexico's slogan -- revolves around a boy adopted by an elderly gay couple who live a high-flying lifestyle and the comedic conflict that ensues. Fleming most recently directed Sundance hit "Hamlet 2" and Warner Bros.' big-screen take on Nancy Drew.
"Gun" is based on Nadine Gordimer's 1998 novel about a privileged white family forced to confront its beliefs when the son is arrested for a grisly murder. Beresford is best known for helming best-picture Oscar winner "Driving Miss Daisy."
The company also will produce a thriller, "The Trespassers," with Steven Soderbergh collaborator Laura Bickford.
