He sings, he fixes cars, and he takes punches better than De Niro’s Raging Bull. Elvis Presley excels in one of his few ’60s pictures that shows an interest in being a ‘real movie,’ a remake of a boxing saga with entertaining characters and fine direction from noir specialist Phil Karlson. Plus Charles Bronson, Lola Albright and Joan Blackman in standout roles.

Near the turn of the century a struggling war correspondent named Edgar Wallace began churning out detective stories for British monthlies like Detective Story Magazine to help make the rent. Creative to a fault, his preposterously prolific output (exacerbated by ongoing gambling debts) soon earned him a legion of fans along with a pointedly ambiguous sobriquet, “The Man Who Wrote Too Much.”
A reader new to Wallace’s work could be excused for thinking the busy writer was making it up as he went along… because that’s pretty much what he did. He dictated his narratives, unedited, into a dictaphone for transcription by his secretary where they would then...

Germany's Explosive Media company has a serious itch for American westerns, and they have a trio of new releases. One is a minor Hollywood classic with major graces, from the late 1950s. A second sees an American producer based in England filming in Italy with a rising international star, and for the third an established American star goes European to stay in the game. The best thing for Yankee buyers? The discs are Region-free.

It makes welcome sense that a locally owned and operated movie theater would present a program that highlights its home state while also supporting one of its own Austin friends. Violet Crown Cinema has announced a new ongoing film series called Texas Spotlight, which will feature the work of Texas filmmakers and Texas-based films.
Three monthly screenings have been announced so far, and all ticket sales from these initial shows will be donated to a fund for Evan West, a Violet Crown employee severely injured in the March 13 hit-and-run on Red River Street.
This first trio of films features two newer selections and one retrospective screening, and all three directors hail from Texas (either Austin or Dallas). Tickets are available here.

Billboard has spoken with artists and others who were at or around the scene of the fatal car crash on Red River Street in Austin during South by Southwest. John Doe of the band X says the group's first reaction to Thursday morning's deadly car crash, which occurred outside the band's SXSW show at The Mohawk on Austin's Red River Street, was disbelief and shock. Doe tells Billboard that the group knew something was awry when it finished its set and patrons were not allowed to leave the club. The group was subsequently told about the incident by its road

The fatal crash, in which a driver smashed through temporary barricades set up for the film and music festival in Austin, Texas, occurred around 12.30am on Thursday.
Austin chief of police Art Axecedo said the two victims were pronounced dead at the scene. They were initially reported by police to be an adult male and an adult female who had been riding a moped struck by the vehicle.

Cine Las Americas has been honoring both the 200th anniversary of Mexico's independence and the 100th anniversary of its revolution all year with a variety of film series. The latest is free, and perfect for the season, as it celebrates that famous masked superhero ... Santo.
If you're not familiar with the Santo legend, Santo was a professional wrestler in Mexico in the early 20th century. Santo was so popular he not only became a folklore icon, but spawned a series of 52 films from 1958 through 1982, with the most famous film being Santo vs. las Mujeres Vampiro (Santo vs. the Vampire Women), which was featured on MST3K. Locals who frequent the Alamo Drafthouse have probably at least seen some clips of Santos films as part of the Alamo pre-shows. But you can now see five of those films in their entirety for the hefty sum of whatever amount of fuel it...

For this edition Shadows of Film Noir, it's time for Phil Karlson's tough 99 River Street, produced by United Artists in 1953. It will be playing in a new print on Saturday, May 15 at San Francisco's Roxie Cinema. The film is not available on DVD, but for those not lucky enough to see it on the big screen, it is at least available streaming on Hulu.
Behind the Scenes
Director Phil Karlson was born in Chicago in 1908, the son of an Irish stage actress. He attended law school in Los Angeles, and began working in the movie industry as a prop man. He moved up to assistant director and began making his own films in the 1940s. Despite directing one notable, early Marilyn Monroe film, he did not make a mark until the 1950s, with a series of very tough, violent film noirs. This run eventually ended, and he went on...

Austin, Texas — "Hi. I'm Patrick."
That's how Patrick Stump, former Fall Out Boy frontman/ current poster boy for portion-control dieting (I mean, have you seen the dude lately?) kicked off his solo career, one song into his much-discussed South by Southwest set. It was a brief, seemingly needless introduction — everyone was here to see him, after all — yet it was somewhat fitting too. He's always been a man of few words.
It was one of the few times he actually spoke to the audience at Austin's dive-licious Dirty Dog Bar, preferring instead to let his new music do the talking for him. And for the most part, that music didn't let him down.
