Sex & Nudity

  • Renton's bare buttocks are briefly shown in one scene.
  • A man and a woman have sex on TV for about 5 seconds. These are characters in the story who have made a sex tape of themselves.
  • Most of the graphic sexual content takes place in one extended montage of multiple couples having sex.
  • A short montage of different people having sex includes flashes of full frontal male and female nudity.
  • Two men have sex in a car. They kiss passionately and one man lies on his stomach. We see his pleasured facial expressions as it is implied offscreen the other man has penetrated him.
  • A woman described as having "great tits" is unconscious on a couch after a drug overdose, showing a flash of bare breasts.
  • A woman attempts to sexually assault a young man. She grabs his crotch and pushes him onto a bed. She opens his trousers and is obviously impressed at the size of his genitals (no nudity). He pushes her off and she continues to shout and moan in ecstasy and grinds her body on the bed.

Violence & Gore

  • Begbie destroys a hotel room in a fit of rage.
  • Despite being somewhat infrequent, the violence 'Trainspotting' does have is very strong.
  • Very bloody depiction of a woman screaming having a beer glass thrown on her head (aftermath shown on her face). Palms are slashed and people get hit by Begbie during his outbursts, with bloody results.
  • A bar fight occurs in which numerous punches are throw, but this is brief.
  • A man is cut in the hand by a knife, we briefly see the wound. This is very bloody.

Profanity

  • Pervasive language
  • 175 uses of "fuck". 23 uses of "cunt". Pervasive use of "shit", and "piss".

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Renton and Dianne smoke hashish in Renton's flat
  • The film is about drug addiction.
  • Characters are shown drunk or getting high because of drugs.
  • There are frequent depictions of the characters preparing drugs, including scenes of them heating the drugs over a flame, tying their arms with belts and injecting the drug into their veins.
  • While such scenes are frequent, the film does not promote or glamourise drug abuse.
  • There are a few drug induced hallucinations in the film as well.
  • All characters smoke and drink and several scenes take place in bars.
  • A character shoves a Morphine suppository up his anus and accidentally defecates it into the toilet and has to retrieve it by going into the toilet, which leads to an oddly fantastical sequence in the toilet waters.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Trainspotting has many disgusting and uncomfortable scenes even though it is a dark comedy.
  • The toilet scene is very disgusting and uncomfortable.
  • Renton experiences bizarre hallucinations during heroin withdrawal, including a baby rotating her head 180 degrees as she crawls across the ceiling. Many consider this to be one of the scariest non-horror movie scenes.
  • The violence is brief, but it can be shocking.
  • Renton places a morphine suppository in the back of his trousers to conceal it. He needs it to help with the withdrawal symptoms while he is trying to detox. Severe diarrhea is a common symptom, of opiate withdrawal and he accidently defecates the suppository into a filthy toilet that is already full of feces. He reaches into the toilet and starts feeling around, trying to find the suppository among the feces. He hallucinates pulling himself into the toilet and swimming around in the ocean.
