Exclusive: USA Network’s “blue sky” series of the 2000s and early 2010s are having a moment this year between Suits‘ blockbuster run on Netflix, which broke streaming records and led to a potential offshoot series at NBC, and the Monk reunion movie, which premieres today on Peacock and already is getting awards recognition.
Now the brand is making its way back to where it started, on the USA Network. NBCUniversal’s ad-supported cable net is plotting a return to original scripted programming with light, frothy character-based procedurals in the mold of the lineup from the “blue sky”era that included Monk, Burn Notice, Psych, Royal Pains, White Collar and Suits, Deadline has learned.
After the end of the WGA strike, NBCU scripted executives put out feelers about their USA plans and already have identified a handful of ideas they are considering for development but there are no deals yet,...

Leopold Ross is the kind of guy who gets excited to be in the presence of legendary monsters. So you can imagine his joy at being asked to compose the music for the Apple TV+ series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters,” the highly anticipated show in the MonsterVerse franchise that premieres November 17 on the streamer. Except that the truth is, Ross went all-in on the show before he even knew what it was about. As he told Gold Derby’s Latasha Ford during a jam-packed launch event at the DGA Theater in Hollywood this month, he agreed to be the show’s composer based solely on the fact Chris Black had signed on as its showrunner/executive producer. They had worked together once before, on the 2016-2018 Cinemax horror drama “Outcast.” ‘When I got the call to do the show, I just said yes immediately because I love Chris and I...

Jeff Vlaming, the very hirable TV writer, producer and story editor who worked on 41 shows — including The X-Files, Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, Hannibal and The 100 — across three decades, has died. He was 63.
A specialist in science fiction, Vlaming died Jan. 30 at Huntington Hospital in Pasadena after he was diagnosed with cancer in early 2021, his brother, Jonathan Vlaming, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Vlaming most recently served as a writer and executive producer for the final three seasons (2018-20) of The CW’s The 100 and as an exec producer and writer on NBC’s Debris in 2021.
In 2009-10, he was a writer and exec producer on Fox’s Fringe in 2009-10; he and showrunner J.H. Wyman penned what many fans consider the series’ preeminent episode, “White Tulip.”

The forthcoming Law & Order revival has added a Burn Notice alum to its ranks.
Jeffrey Donovan has joined the cast of the NBC series as a New York Police Department detective, reports Deadline.
No further details have been revealed about Donovan's character.
NBC officially picked up a 21st season of Law & Order earlier this year -- a decade after it was initially canceled.
The straight-to-series pickup was unsurprising, especially when you consider Svu and Organized Crime have both solidified themselves as strong ratings performers on Thursdays.
NBC will likely air all three shows together on one night, in a similar vein to Dick Wolf's FBI universe and Chicago universe.
"Law & Order is quite simply one of the most iconic shows in television history, and the idea of continuing its legacy and partnering with Dick on an all-new season is nothing short of exhilarating," said Susan Rovner,...

Actress Royana Black Hubbell, who starred in the 1988 CBS sitcom “Raising Miranda” and appeared in several other ’80s and ’90s staples, has died. She was 47.
Hubbell died “very suddenly” on July 14 due to acute myeloid leukemia, according to a GoFundMe page organized by Andy Hubbell. “Royana’s incredible energy and spirit will be a part of our lives forever, and her friends and family want to remember her and assist her husband, Jp, at this most difficult time,” the page said.
“Most importantly, let Royana’s light shine through you every day,” it continued.
Hubbell is best-known for playing the lead role in CBS’ “Raising Miranda,” which followed a newly single dad facing the trials and tribulations of raising his 15-year-old daughter (Hubbell). She also made appearances in “The Cosby Show,” “Almost Partners,” “Touched by an Angel,” “Touching Evil,” and more.

Exclusive: ABC Studios’ Svp Drama Development Nne Ebong is leaving the studio after 12 years, the last five as head of drama development, I have learned.
I hear Ebong is leaving for another opportunity. No one would confirm where she is headed but there has been increasing speculation that she may reunite with former ABC boss Paul Lee and join his independent studio wiip,, which is backed by CAA. For the past couple of months, Ebong had been rumored for a number of high-profile jobs, including running Barack and Michelle Obama’s Netflix-based company, filling the vacancy at the helm of Paramount TV and joining Apple. Reps for wiip declined comment.
There is no word yet on Ebong’s replacement but ABC and ABC Studios are known for promoting within, as was the case with her five years ago. Right now, there is some uncertainty at ABC Studios and 20th...

I’m a fan of eating crow. Truly a student from the school of tough love. The other day I happened to be perusing my archive of articles here on ComicMix when I hit on the one where I vowed to buy more indie books. That article was published August 14, 2014. Shortly after it hit the site I threw out my mainstream subscription box that was brimming with Marvel Now! and NuFiftyScrewYou floppies.
Blink, and a few years pass by. And my vow? Beaten, battered, and broken. I could spend the entirety of this week lamenting on specifically why I broke my promise. But, that (as Alton Brown would say) will be for a later show. This week, I want to start making good on my promises. You know… a mere 26 months later.

Barely six days ago from the time this article prances across the interwebs to be posted to my little corner here at ComicMix, I will have once again broke bread with our ol’ E-i-c Mike Gold. Mr. Gold was in town (Chi-Town) for secret business. I’ve long since learned to stop asking for details, as when such a query is prodded Mike is prone to drum up a story with no fewer than seven name drops, and four blink-and-you’ll-miss-it delicious details about someone famous in comics. Before you know it, the subject has been changed, the barbecue brisket has hit the table, and you’ve completely forgotten your original question.

With only a little time left in this year’s con season for me and the Unshaven Lads, I want to address an elephant in the Alley, if you will. My nemesis / frenemy / all around stunning pal Dan Dougherty – of Touching Evil, Beardo, and Bob Howard: Plumber of the Unknown fame – has recently become the talk of the town over a recent strip he posted.
Soon thereafter, many wonderful bloggers, fans, passersby, and everyone in between began commenting. The discussion was mostly positive, and on the side of us indie artists. But a few ne’er-do-wells decided to play devil’s advocate (see also: dicks, douchebags, trolls, et. al.), and champion the counterpoint. They posit the question: When an indie artist produces a printed piece (a poster, postcard, trading card, etc.) depicting any licensed character that they themselves do not control a license for… should they have any right...

"Sherlock" may not return for its fourth season until -- say it ain't so -- 2017, due to the hectic film schedules of in-demand stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. In the meantime, you can rewatch all three seasons and soon you can binge on Cumberbatch in "The Imitation Game" and Freeman in "The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies." But what then?
If you're craving more veddy British crime solving, you don't have far to look. Here are some of the best series the BBC (and ITV) has to offer, with private detectives, psychiatrists, cops, spies, and forensic pathologists all cracking cases, catching criminals and drinking lots of tea.
1. "Sherlock Holmes" (1984-1994)
If it's more Sherlock you crave (and not just Mr. Cumberbatch), then you must see Jeremy Brett's intensely intellectual (and equally arrogant) period-appropriate take on the legendary detective. This Watson is also solid, especially in "The House of the Baskervilles.

Following up on my column last week, I had to sit down and really ask myself what it would take to sell me on a comic book. Not to toot my horn of Stereotypical Jewishness, but the thought of wasting as few as five dollars on a product I won’t wholly appreciate causes me to back out of a deal faster than the Marvel greenlights new films. The fact is I am oftentimes a skeptic when it comes to consumption of media. Either the creators have to be known to me previously, or come recommended by a trusted friend or critic.
When I self-discover, it’s typically after I’ve consumed everything else on my personal docket (which, admittedly, is rare). Most recently, I consumed the movie Chronicle. It was on my DVR, when I had two hours of alertness left in me and literally nothing left to watch.

While I am buried deep under a pile of production – completing “The Samurnauts: Curse of the Dreadnuts #3” in time for Wizard World Chicago later this month – Editor Mike reached out to inspire me. In other words, he didn’t want me to bore ya’ll one more time with my annual bitching session regarding the passion of the indie creator. Instead, he suggested I suggest to you, my adoring public, a few books that I’m reading and loving right now… that do not come from the big two publishers. There was only one problem with this prompt.
Since I’ve been knee-deep in digital art-ing, lettering, editing, coloring, and laying out(ing?) a comic for the last month or so… I’ve basically all but stopped reading comics.
Of course I could fall back on my staple suggestions: Touching Evil by Dan Dougherty, Solution Squad by Jim and Rose McClain,...

This past week, I joined a panel of fellow indie comic publishers in a Q & A session revolving around the industry. There were some great questions bandied about, but for my money? The best concerned ‘the hustle’. When you’re a garage band, your merch doesn’t march into the stores without serious work. As I’ve detailed before, the way into every comic book shop is paved in broken glass, and tarnished dreams. Indie publishers’ best chance at initial sales comes first and foremost in face to face pitches. But you see, on this panel, I sat next to two other gentlemen… each representing a side on the teeter-totter of salesmanship. It got me thinking about the process of building a brand, and how those who are readying themselves for their first cons on the other side of the aisle might benefit from knowing the lay of the land.

The actor/writer/comedian/rapper/not-Spider-Man Donald Glover, a.k.a. Childish Gambino, recently released his new album ‘Because the Internet.” On said album, Glover, amongst other tirades about money and how he has it, exclaims in a solemn tone… “I don’t know who I am anymore”. This is precluded by lyrics revolving around what one might assume his life is like these days – facing criticism from random strangers, texts from other strangers, and general haters being hateful– and as such, the line hits home pretty harshly. We’ve all been there, right?
Shortly after hearing that line though, adjoined to others like “No one’s ever been this lost”, “Funny the day you born that’s really your death sentence”, and the gem “Eventually all my followers realize they don’t need a leader” I was left with a bitter taste in my mouth. Glover’s alter ego...

So I was considering going on a long-rant/love-letter to the WWE, whose Summer Slam pay-per-view and Monday Night Raw this week were just fantastic. I was going to highlight how no other company producing week-to-week content for an audience of millions has the balls they do when it comes to allowing their villains to complete terrible acts without retribution for months on end. I was going to ramble on about how for the first time in the history of the company a truly undersized, under-utilized hero has emerged due entirely to his in-ring ability. But then I realized that while ComicMix is a pop-culture blog and news site… Comic is in the damned title. I might be better served bitching about something comic related. Which brings me to last night.

British screenwriter Paul Abbott, creator of Shameless, will speak at the Australian Writers’ Guild’s National Screenwriters Conference in February 2013. Next year’s conference will carry the theme ‘What Happens Next? The Screenwriters’ Journey.”
The announcement:
The Australian Writers’ Guild (Awg) today announced that one of Britain’s most critically acclaimed and commercially successful TV writers will head to our shores for the biennial National Screenwriters Conference at Mornington Peninsula in Victoria, from 20-22 February 2013. Paul Abbott created the multi award-winning semi-autobiographical Shameless, which is now in its tenth series in the UK as well as a second series of the Us remake starring William H Macy.
“As a screenwriter, this is the one event I look forward to more than any other. Hearing the best in the business talk about their craft is always incredibly inspiring, and there are none better than Paul Abbott”, says Australian Writers’ Guild President Jan Sardi.

For those who are big fans of any crime-related shows on American television whose names consist exclusively of, or include, acronyms, it's probably safe to suggest that you give Pie in the Sky a miss.
Things get trickier after that though, because the mid-90s BBC show is hard to compare to anything, much less any other criminal investigation series. Fans of British television surely want to give it a chance, especially anything that falls in the general category of episodic drama, but you don't want to look here for your fix of detective programming.
Much as you might like to try to explain the show in simple terms, it's actually just a show about Henry Crabbe (Richard Griffiths), and though he is a police detective, and it is hard to argue against the idea that "crimes" "happen," and he "investigates" them, but there the similarity to any police or detective drama ends.

A new Vertigo Crime title in the mailbox is always welcome. These little hardcover thrill rides generally appeal to noir buffs but mix in plenty of horror the end result channeling everything from X Files, Touching Evil, to the comic universes of characters like John Constantine. This is serious adult fiction tackling old genre convention and coming out all the better and more entertaining for it. The cover art of Area 10 reminds me of those 1940s cheap pulp paper backs you always see disintegrating in present day used bookstores, waiting to be bagged and tagged by some eager collector. Those things were churned out by the pound back in the day and a lot of them rightly fell into the dustbin of history. But...

With few exceptions, everything I've seen from Acorn Media has just been utterly brilliant. Single-Handed is no exception.
Maybe it's just because I'm an anglophile, but it's very hard to criticize what I find very little wrong with, as is the case with Single-Handed, an Irish cop show about a cop returning to his hometown to take up a bit of police work, and uncovering a very precariously hidden dark history -- some of which leads back to his father.
The story keeps you guessing, that's for sure. Each of the three feature-length mysteries included in the first set aired as individual "series"; the first originally aired in 2007, the second in 2008, and a third in 2009. The inevitable Set 2 will feature episodes from last year's six-episode fourth series.
Essentially, Single-Handed, Set 1 is three films, each one-and-a-half hours long and focusing on a different mystery. The first episode, perhaps the set's most tense,...

"Shameless", a new Showtime series based on a U.K. show of the same name, has released its first trailer in anticipation of the January premiere. The series is starring Oscar-nominated actor William H. Macy in the lead role and is coming from the production hand of John Wells ("ER, "Southland") and Paul Abbot ("State of Play", "Touching Evil").
Macy plays a far-from-stellar working class patriarch of an unconventional Chicago brood of six motley kids who keep the home afloat while he's out drinking and carousing. Playing the eldest kid Fiona is Emmy Rossum of "Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera" fame. Some of the other Gallagher siblings are portrayed by Cameron Monaghan, Emma Kenney, Ethan Cutkosky and Jeremy Allen White. Joan Cusack and Justin Chatwin are also in the show.

Thanks to Acorn Media, I’ve been exposed to all sorts of television I wouldn’t have gotten to see otherwise. Touching Evil. Hope Springs. Life on Mars. They’re all great pieces of television, and they’re all very, very British.
But that’s the interesting thing about all of them; they don’t fit the American viewer’s usual stereotype of British television. You know what I’m talking about: the grainy film, the monochromatic sets, the hairsprayed men with toothbrush mustaches — the stuff you usually see on public television. Those were all absent from the aforementioned series, mostly because they were all made within twenty years ago — long after the PBS triteness evolved.
Mr. Palfrey of Westminster, however, is a television series that was made in 1984 and 1985, remaining delightfully stuck in that quaint phase of crime-solving septuagenarians. I say “delightfully,” because it’s almost old enough to...

Prime Suspect is a high-class cop drama. Perhaps even more so than the critically lauded shows like The Wire, Prime Suspect feels like the filet mignon of television crime. That’s probably due to its absolutely fantastic cast, which features Helen Mirren as the main character, Di Jane Tennison — one of the first really strong female police on TV.
The rest of the series almost feels like a who’s who of brilliant British actors who are still prevalent today. Seeing as the series was made a decade ago, it’s almost like looking through a time machine. A young Ralph Fiennes has a bit role as a victim’s bodyfriend in the first series. Series three features David Thewlis (Harry Potter), Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass), and James Frain (the creepy Franklin Mott from this season of True Blood). Tom Wilkinson pops up as Tennison’s boyfriend in the first series,...

I thought Law & Order had been on forever, but that’s nothing compared to the UK’s Taggart, which bowed in 1983 (a full six years before L&O). The world’s longest-running police drama releases a third set of eight episodes on September 21, and I have a look at the Acorn Media release for you before it does.
The Show
As a self-professed crime show junkie, I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I haven’t seen Taggart before this. It’s been on since before I was born! The series is set in Glasgow, Scotland, and spotlights a team of four detectives: Detective Chief Inspector Matt Burke (Alex Norton), Detective Inspector Robbie Ross (John Michie), Detective Sergeant Jackie Reid (Blythe Duff), and Detective Constable Stuart Fraser (Colin McCredie).
If you’re wondering how the show gets its title, it takes it from the original protagonist, Detective Chief Inspector Jim Taggart,...

If you're wondering what Touching Evil and Life on Mars (my other DVD review) have in common, it's that they're both British police dramas. You see, that's what Acorn Media specializes in: British crime shows. There's nothing wrong with that; in fact, I rather love it. But if it's tone you're looking at, Touching Evil is the polar opposite of Life on Mars. The latter is a rather lighthearted series that focuses on the protagonist, while Touching Evil is actually a fairly gritty, and much darker look at the criminals. It's a British version of Criminal Minds, in a sense.
The plot is some of the tightest stuff I've seen. It's exponentially more gripping than the procedural dramas it was a precursor to, though possibly this extended development is a result of the longer episodes (each episode runs close to 100 minutes). However, the episodes still never run slack, and are...

This week's TV on DVD segment is a little different than usual; this time around, I'll be reviewing a DVD set. This is a trend that will carry on until at least the immediate future (I hope to have day-of reviews of sets like Fringe and Lost posted on here as well). This week's set, however, features a show that ended a few years ago (though the set was only released on July 6). I'm talking about BBC's Life on Mars.
American audiences are probably most familiar with Life on Mars from the Harvey Keitel-starring ABC series that lasted for seventeen episodes before being cancelled. The UK series lasted for one episode shorter than that (finishing at sixteen episodes), due to the UK's shorter television seasons. That it lasted for two years and told a complete story (with an ending that makes sense) makes it infinitely more appealing than its Us incarnation.

The White Ribbon (Sony) On the eve of Ww I, a small village in Germany is struck by a series of tragic, seemingly unconnected events until the townspeople, and the audience, start to connect the dots. Shot in stark, beautiful black & white, director Michael Haneke has fashioned a haunting metaphorical drama that is as coldly chilling as anything made by Ingmar Bergman, and darkly unsettling as anything from the canon of David Lynch. A rich, tough, brilliant cinematic experience you’re not likely to forget. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bd bonuses: Interviews with cast and crew; featurettes. Widescreen Dolby and DTS 5.1 surround.
Alice In Wonderland (Disney) Tim Burton’s take on the Lewis Carroll classic finds young Alice (Mia Wasikowska), a 19th century girl who finds herself in an unhappy engagement to a boorish suitor, tumbling down the rabbit hole into Wonderland, where she encounters magical cakes,...

True Blood and Outnumbered come to the end of their current runs in the UK, Ashes To Ashes begins its final two-parter, and there's a whole lot of movies to pick from too...
If there's any shrubbery in the vicinity, it won't be us who's beating about it. Telly this week is not the exciting landscape it's been in weeks past, with a typical lull between bookended bank holidays.
Sure there are plenty of good shows to watch, but as far as new shows taking off this week, the launch pad is barren.
Two shows finish their runs over the next seven days with the season finale of the always exciting True Blood tonight at 10:00pm on FX. The episode is Beyond Here Lies Nothin' and closes the second season of the vampire and mind-reading waitress chronicles at a major town gathering orchestrated by Maryann, where a special and powerful guest is expected.

Two new shows are coming our way from Showtime and HBO, created by and starring the top-tier talent the premium cable networks have become so good at attracting.
First up is Showtime's Shameless, based on the British show of the same name, which will star William H. Macy as an alcoholic stuck as the sole caregiver to his six children when his wife takes off. Luckily, he has his oldest daughter, played by Emmy Rossum, to do most of the work for him. My, but that does sound like fun!
The always-amazing Allison Janney will have a recurring role on the show, of which there will be at least twelve one-hour episodes, scheduled to begin shooting towards the end of this summer. Producer extraordinaire John Wells (ER, The West Wing, many others) will produce the show along with the British version's creator, Paul Abbott.
This won't be the first time...

Showtime has picked up an American version of the long-running, BAFTA-winning British series "Shameless."
The series, which stars William H. Macy as the alcoholic father of a working-class Chicago family, will go into production in the summer and likely premiere in 2011. John Wells ("ER," "Southland") is executive producing the series -- which has been a pet project of his for years -- along with the British show's creator, Paul Abbott.
"We're so happy to be bringing this richly textured drama about a dysfunctional blue-collar family to Showtime with two of the greatest television producers working today, John Wells and Paul Abbott," says Robert Greenblatt, president of Showtime Entertainment.
"Shameless" will also star Emmy Rossum ("The Phantom of the Opera," "Dare") as Macy's oldest daughter, who tries to hold things together for him and her five siblings, and Allison Janney ("The West Wing," "Juno") in a recurring part. Abbott ("State of Play,...

Tracker – Issue #1 | Top Cow Comics | Written by Jonathan Lincoln | Art by Frances Tsai
Check Out The Five Page Preview Below!
If you think about, cops and creatures of the night have a lot in common. They’re tough. They do most of their activity in the wee hours of the night. They’re scary, especially unshaven. Sometimes, they sit in one place for hours on end for their target to arrive. And once in awhile, they turn into something else when pissed off. Whether or not it’s upon a full moon is quite debatable.
It’s a wonder why we don’t see more crossovers between cop shows and werewolves, but Tracker from Top Cow Comics mixes the two perfectly with a yellow and blue make green seal of approval. It’s mature and gritty, yet mysterious and supernatural, allowing the reality to lead the fiction into believable circumstances.
